I have visited this hostel in South Lake Tahoe on several occasions when thru hiking the Sierra and have always had a wonderful, efficient experience. The amenities are useful, well maintained, affordable and while basic, are comfortable. They have a well stocked kitchen and commons room as well as laundry facilities open to guests after 4pm daily. The location is close in and close to all transportation hubs in and out of Tahoe. Most importantly, the staff are friendly , accommodating, flexible and helpful. The atmosphere is not too party crazy and loud but well, - mellow. They know the relevant local information and can give useful tips on how to get around and what to do locally. Super cute hostel only 5 minutes walking from the main street in this town, including lots of places to eat and drink at all price points. About 10 minutes walking from four major casinos. It's a lovely, somewhat hippie, oasis in this ski/resort/gambling town. It looks to be a converted motel, so the main rooms seem fairly spacious for 2 sets of bunk beds, and en suite bathroom in each. There was a nice kitchen/lounge space on the second floor. A computer room as well. Wifi seemed to work fine. The may not be staffed 24/7 as there were instructions to leave room key in a slot at certain hours when checking out. That said, there are apparently late check-in instructions, but you should inquire specifically about them to avoid any issues. Bathrooms: Clean and functional, with decor, counter space, etc. matching what you might expect from a typical American motel. read more

Whether you want the most convenient room to ski/ride Heavenly, a VERY cost effective, private room close to the lake, or just an all around chill time to meet new friends, you're in luck here. This place must be doused in magic Tahoe fairy dust or something because every time I stay here, I leave feeling like a new woman. The people. The vibes. The $1-$3 beers! A solid hostel with solid people. The room was clean with clean bedding and included a towel. Cheapest place you can stay in Tahoe I think. The community makes it fun. Never know what the crowd will be like. The volunteer staff are great. Shout out to Carlos who gives excellent tours to the incoming guests and always has a sunny disposition. He probably won't be there when you come because the staff rotates, but whoever will be there will most likely be great. I liked the communal kitchen. I cooked a few meals there. They do a good job of cleaning it daily. I would recommend that they add color to the rooms. The art in the halls and in the parking lot are so great. Not sure why the rooms had to be so dreary. Put some paint/murals on them! I'm sure you have talented volunteers who could do that. The rooms had a feel of a motel without any color. Easy upgrade! read more

I was asked to leave due to "complaints". They wouldn't say what. I've stayed at many hostels internationally. I have never been treated in this manner and I find it incredibly disrespectful. I've often seen hostel guests be asked to change their behaviour, which is entirely reasonable and often goes well. Everyone has different expectations of their guests. I'm a very social person and this seems to have been used against me, as they said they have a "one strike" policy in their "communal space". Unlike them, I am willing to forgive mistakes. A blizzard in Tahoe! Oh my! What a perfect opportunity to skip the madness of chains and an 8 hour drive down the mountain just to get back to San Francisco. Luckily before planning my trip I had searched to see if there were any hostels in the area and to my surprise there was Mellow Mountain. My boyfriend and I booked a private room which to our surprise had its own bathroom, ample space, heating, and fresh towels on the bed. We even had an extra blanket to share and the hot shower after a day at heavenly was simply the best. The kitchen area and common rooms were very clean and organized. I was impressed by their computer room as well as all the art and murals! We booked online and check in was a breeze. We left a couple of beers at the front desk to show our appreciation and will definitely be back again. Side note- I forgot my credit card at the front desk and they called to let me know they had it! Great service ! read more

I've been raving about this place to my friends for over a year now because I love it so much -- every single time I have stayed here has been a fantastic experience. Mellow Mountain is everything you could ask for at an extremely reasonable price: Prime location, walking distance to a bunch of food and only a block from the Heavenly gondola. Cozy dorm-style rooms with bunk beds, heaters, and clean bathrooms. Free wifi and covered parking. A cute courtyard with string lights and cool mural art. A quiet computer room for those who need to work. A common area with a kitchen and a giant map on the wall with pins marking the all the places guests are from. What really sets this place apart is the people. Elias (one of the owners and one of the chillest people I have ever met) is always around to hangout with. The staff goes above and beyond with friendly service. The community is so warm and diverse, I have made friends and good memories every single time I have stayed there. If you're looking for housing that is affordable, welcoming, and more than just a place to sleep, Mellow Mountain really lives up to its reputation as a home away from home. This hostel has everything travelers need and it was so convenient - bathroom for each room plus extra at common room and computer room, towel included, great heater each room, very firm bunker bed, great information about the town, fully equipped kitchen, arts around the hostel, cozy common area, good vibe to meet people and cheapest beer at the reception! (so many kinds of beer you never get bored) Also it is very clean and staffs are very helpful and friendly. Location is also great. There are many things in walking distance. Really cool, eclectic place to hang out. I stayed here for about a week when I first visited Lake Tahoe, and had a blast! The staff seriously became like family! The hostel is kept extremely clean, to include the bedrooms and common areas. LOVE MELLOW MOUNTAIN!! If you're looking for a fun, cheap, and awesome place to stay in South Lake then check out Mellow!! Stayed here twice on separate week trips to South Lake and had so much fun, made some great friends and got a ton of riding in. The hostel is literally at 2 minute walk to the Heavenly village gondola and is right in the middle of town. Rooms are standard 4 person, it's nice you're shower and bathroom are right in your room, beds have a reading light and charging ports. Very nice size kitchen and common room. They have covered parking too which is nice when it's dumping and you don't have to clean off your car! Definitely staying every trip I make up to South Lake, shout out to Harrison, Tyler, and Dem. My girlfriend and I were talking to Harrison for the past 4 months arranging our stay here. Harrison seems like a nice guy but would not respond for the life of him. It's no surprise why the workaway website states their average reply time is 27 days. We reached out 10 days before our arranged arrival and I get an email that states they will not be able to accommodate us. Had we not emailed and confirmed with them previously, I have a good feeling that they wouldn't have told us. As a traveler, the absolute worst thing that can happen is plans falling through last minute. We were extremely disappointed with the management and service at Mellow Mountain Hostel. read more

I stayed a night in this hostel which honestly is close to being a nice motel except you share a room with a stranger. I mean, my 2 friends and I shared a room with some random dude, us 4 sharing one bathroom. It was basically like any regular hotel but super cheap, especially if you're just looking for a place to sleep and don't need privacy. The staff is really nice and all the facilities worked well (nice warm water, laundry, etc.). If you're looking to stay in South Lake Tahoe for a somewhat long period of time and don't want to break the bank, this is the place to be! read more

We found a sign on trail advertising a new hostel in town, and almost immediately ran into other PCT thru-hikers who had stayed at Mellow Mountain and highly recommended it. The newly renovated rooms are clean with sturdy bunk beds and a bathroom in each! The community room with marble counter-topped kitchen and new appliances is the place to hang and share meals (or steal bites!). Free WiFi available in all rooms. We had an awesome jam session of singing and laughing out front of 20-some guests, the owners included. I took an extra day off trail just to be in this relaxing community. It was a night to remember! Super close to Heavenly Ski Resort and all their shops, including Raley's grocery. Bathroom towel, washcloth, bedding (fitted sheet, bed sheet, and fleece blanket) included. Laundry available: $1.50 to wash, $1.00 to dry, brand new equipment. Hiker box available to thru-hikers. I can't recommend these guys enough, they really are easy to work with and they attract a chill crowd. Rates are $25 per night. read more

Mellow Mountain Hostel is FUN. My first time here was during the summer when I planned a hella impromptu trip to Tahoe and didn't have time to find cheap lodging. My second time here was during the winter- I had a good enough time here the first time that I really didn't mind a return trip. Wolfie and Elias are the owners of this hostel and are incredibly welcoming. They gave me a grand tour the first time (there's a kitchen/rec room in addition to all the hostel rooms) and offered me free beer the second time. Each room has one bathroom and two bunk beds (four beds in total) with towels and sheets provided. Being a hostel, you will meet some interesting folk. On my first stay, my one of my roommates was Australian guy who was just surf bumming around America and wanted to give Lake Tahoe a shot. He took me and my friend out to an Aerosmith concert where we stood in the parking lot for a free listen (couldn't see) and proceeded to hit up the casinos for free alcohol. That definitely made for some fond memories. Each bed has its own fan and light so you'll be pretty comfy on your bed. Unless you get top bunk which I've found to be too close to the ceiling and the ladder up to it is a bit hard to navigate. Hungover me did not have a good time making my way down. If you get to your room and find yourself with dibs, choose the bottom bunks! For $26/night, Mellow Mountain Hostel is a steal. It's an affordable livable abode and basically across the street from the Heavenly gondola. read more

These guys are doing things right. The first thing you'll notice is how awesome and friendly the staff is. The rooms are legit-- each bed has a mini fan, outlets and a reading light. The shared rooms have lock boxes built under the beds, so you can feel secure about your stuff. The WiFi is super fast (I'm a web designer, so this is crucial for me) and the community room is a nice place to eat, relax, play foosball or post up on your laptop. Laundry is provided on-site ($1.50/$1) and earplugs are available if you happen to want them. It's obvious that these guys have considered all the details, which is awesome, especially for the price! Cool art throughout the parking garage and an all-round 'mellow mountain' atmosphere. The location is great, too. Walking distance to everything. If you're on a budget and want a nice place to sleep, then definitely check this place out. You'll more than likely make some new friends while you're there. We did. I have an excelent time in this hostel, with nice people and an incredible staff. The place is comftable, clean, with good temperature in every room, I went there in december, winter, and never felt cold inside. The kitchen is comftable and clean and there is a really nice common space with a couch and a big table where you can share with the other guests. Fantastic place to stay if you're open to meeting new people and having a good time. All the facilities are super well kept and well stocked. Free parking is available. Showers are warm, heaters work well, everything you could need is provided. Employees are extremely nice and helpful. All the guests were also really fun and friendly. I made a bunch of new friends. Checked in Thursday night, and Friday morning had a car full of new ski & snowboarding friends driving with me to Kirkwood. FYI it's about an hour drive to Kirkwood, but you can walk across the street to Heavenly. 100% recommend. I will definitely stay here anytime I come up to South Lake Tahoe. read more

Awesome stay. Rooms are basic, but clean and comfortable. Location couldn't be better - 1 block to the Heavenly gondola. Crowd is young, but it was quiet. I was able to go to sleep early without being bothered by noise. (They have free earplugs so maybe not always the case). People were friendly, but took the party to local bars for the most part. Heaters are powerful (fast and hot). We had our pilot light go out a couple of times, but the front desk resolved in a few minutes both times. The shower is hot with good water pressure. Covered parking was an unexpected perk. The hostel has $3 laundry facilities, and also has tools available if you want to wax or tune your skis / snowboard. Communal room is great - fireplace, table for beer pong, fooseball table, giant projection screen TV. Electric fireplace. Common room also has a kitchen with a big fridge, stove, microwave and cubbies for storage. Has a double oven (can cook 2 things at once), 2 big, deep sinks and lots of counter space. Kitchen also has a ton of utensils and cooking / baking tools. There is a grocery store about a 10 minute walk away. It was really nice to be able to cook -- I saved $ and was able to eat healthier than I would have on-resort. The also have an area guidebook, with descriptions of the different ski areas, restaurants / bars, hikes and hot springs. read more

I rarely leave Yelp reviews, but I will for Mellow Mountain Hostel, because it deserves five stars. I've stayed here about 5 times over the past 4 or so years, and it's wonderful for skiing at Heavenly especially. Facilities are well maintained and clean. The location can't be beat, as its ~5 minutes walking to the casinos and Heavenly Gondola. It's awesome to be able to park my car here, ski the day, come back and drive home. All the people I've met have been friendly and chill. Crowd seems mostly in mid-20s or so with some others at different ages. I've recommended Mellow Mountain Hostel to many of the friends, as for skiing near South Lake, especially if by yourself and looking for a nice, easy going, clean, affordable place to stay, it's great! read more

This is one of the best hostels I've been to, hands down. It's clean, it has a great sense of community, and the people are awesome. Definitely good if you're just starting out in town or want a social experience after a day out on the slopes. Great price too. I loved the computer room as an alternative to hanging out in the common room. The art is also dank and really helps out the vibes. So does the music that gets played. It's a great place to be, no matter what your age. Mostly everyone is so accepting and just wants to make friends. This happens anytime you're living in a community, so I do not blame MMH. It does get old waking up at 6am and being bombarded by drunk people in the common room still up from the night before. It also gets old when newbies show up at midnight to move in and feel entitled enough to turn on the overhead lights. But that's not the staff's fault. Hostel life, right? Overall it's a great place. Expect a hostel, not a hotel. You will be sharing your space and you will have to be social. Enjoy!!! read more

This place is perfect for anyone looking for a more social experience with where they stay. I am taking a road trip across the US and have stayed in a number of motels and hostels recently. I've never felt so welcomed then when I checked in and received a tour of the entire hostel right away. I became friends with all 3 of my roommates. The rooms were clean and fairly nice. There's little things everywhere that add to this positive vibes. Definitely would recommend this place to anyone coming to Lake Tahoe. If by any chance you own a hostel in another city and are looking to improve your services, I would definitely make the trip to Lake Tahoe just to see how well they do it. read more

Mellow mountain is literally the best hostel It has such an amazing vibe and everyone always hangs out in the community room including the owner Elias who is a super chill and cool dude, definitely a good host to talk to! The rooms are super nice, we had a double bunk bed room with a bathroom inside, fans, and everything you need. Had an awesome Christmas weekend at this place. Arrived on Christmas Day and was amazed to find out Heavenly Village & the Harrahs casino are so close by & easy walking distance. Checking in with Wolfie & Elias was a breeze. They're indeed very accommodating & super friendly! The rooms, bunk beds, bed sheets, & towels are clean. It's spacious enough for 4 people. It also has lockers underneath and they provide locks for it. I like the lamps on each bed with small fans too. The kitchen is well equipped & updated. Other vacationists are friendly also but I hope they are more considerate though with cleaning after their mess in the kitchen. It's forgivable since it's the holidays with a lot of partying going on. I got a free stamp for my postcard & free beer for me & my friends for voluntarily washing the dishes :)) My OCDC instinct kicked in first thing in the morning. But our last day after 3-day stay, the kitchen was clean in the morning. It has a very good view of Heavenly Village. For its prime location at a very cheap rate, this place is way too awesome! Their dogs, Mila & Solstice are so cute! Will definitely go back... summer or spring for hikes around the area. We did hike a bit at Van Sickle Bi-State Park just farther down Heavenly Village where we can see the gondolas above us. I had a very enjoyable stay at the MMH. Elias organized a shuttle that took a group of hostelers to a local German pub a few miles away. It was a great chance to meet some fellow travelers and enjoy some beer and music. The rooms were clean, check in was a breeze, and the proximity to the state line area restaurants and casinos is ideal. Parking is plentiful and there is a community area with a full kitchen. I had my stay at mellow mountain this holiday season! Let me say that Wolfie and Elias are some of the greatest people I have ever had the joy of meeting. The rooms are comfortable and clean. The common room has ample cooking utensils to cook any meal you could want. The amazing map with pins from everyone around the world is so interesting to see. Both Elias and Wolfie go above and beyond and will help in anyway you can and are almost always available. Absolutely love this place. Cant beat the fresh towels, wash cloths, sheets, pillow cases or the clean rooms, bathrooms, common room, and halls. The hostel has parking with the coolest painted murals all over the walls. It is a 5 minute walk from the village which is full of good food shops and the gondola. They have toothpaste, toothbrushes, ear plugs, maps of near by areas, and flyers with good deals for rentals and all kinds of beer for sale in the lobby. The people who work there are people from all over the world who have great stories to tell and give all the insides of where to hang and what to see in Tahoe and where the locals go to eat. The rooms are super clean and newly renovated with individual shelves for each bed, a light, a fan, and a outlet to charge your phone. They each have a bathroom with a shower !! This hostel atmosphere is awesome, everyone always hanging out and inviting people into their plans no matter if its for dinner, skiing, going to the casinos, or just down to the lake.
