This establishment is an absolute nightmare. I came here once, it was bearable only because of what I paid that day. This time around it was much more crowded and they were very understaffed. The kitchen area was soooo crowded and there was one woman taking the orders, making the food and ringing people up. If you paid by credit card, she had to go up front to charge your card which delayed her orders even more. She was super pissed and I didn't blame her. Then she was delayed by another 45 mins because they had to replace the oil in the fryer. It took and hour and a half for me to get my curly fries and chicken wings. The kitchen was Hells Kitchen and I don't mean the Manhattan neighborhood! She wore the same gloves she used to touch the money and serve all the different food. SO if you had a hot dog, you most likely had marinara sauce on it from her glove. She placed the utensils she was using to cook underneath the grill, where I'm pretty sure mice and roaches resided! The countertop was full of grease and no one bothered to clean it. Finally, we get our food and go to our assigned lanes for 3 hrs - we started at midnight. Two hours in, they tell us we need to move to the other side for the last hour because they're closing out that section. We decided we've had enough bowling went to turn our shoes in. The lady up front asked why we didn't move over to the other lanes, I said it's alright, we're done and plus they should have been aware we would be there for 3 hrs considering we DID pay for it. She had the nerve to walk away and mumble "That's stupid". I told her what's stupid is moving us when you knew we'd be there for 3 hours and what's also stupid is how unprofessional you are for saying that as if I didn't hear you. She stood shut. On a Sunday afternoon, it was $6.50 per game. I brought my equipment and saved money on shoe rental (no car insurance pun here - I've officially overused it). The scoring machine setup is peculiar because the consoles are difficult to use. It took me and friends 15 minutes to figure out how to determine to change players' names (instead of being PLAYER1 and PLAYER2) and reset the pinsetters (no local button on the side of the ball return). If you are not familiar with the system, it will be difficult for you too (not intuitive). I did appreciate the animated - scoring system. At times you would see some 'creepy gas face' depending how many pins you knocked down. You have to experience it for yourself. This bowling alley has a very old school feel. Equipped with 20+ lanes (26 maybe - I was on the left side) and both a snackbar and a fully stocked alcohol bar, I would bowl here again. Should I be apprehensive that you have to be "buzzed in"? I visited this bowling alley with my children Sunday afternoon and honestly had a nice time. I did notice something which disturbed me and frankly made me angry. I watched these Jewish kids who looked like they had special needs come in with what looked like their dads or maybe caretakers I don't really know. I overheard they didn't have a reservation so watched them just go to the arcades located at the back of the bowling alley away from everyone. From the moment they walked in, the person at the counter was hostile and rude to them. Eventually, he threw them out of the bowling alley into the cold. I asked the dads what was going on, and one of them remarked to me, that they now needed to wait an hour in the cold for their access a ride and weren't sure what to do with their kids. I was appalled, would it really have hurt to let them stay in the back and play arcades, socially distanced from everyone (there was literally no one else even near the arcades besides them). Look.....take this place for what it is!!! A retro bowling alley and i love it!!! It was my first time going a month ago and i had a blast! It was a saturday night and of course it was a little busy but we made sure to go later in the day around 10pm. While waiting for a lane, we ventured into the bar and thats where we met pete!..ah man...pete is the man!!! And makes the best drinks this side of brooklyn! I was so slammed after having one of his specials and of course i had to have another(in purple please!). We get to our lane and at that time cosmic bowling(they turn off the lights with the exception of the light effects.) started and we had a fantastic time bowling. The music is good, its 80s and 90s music videos. Drink prices were good, we got a pitcher of beer for about 9 or 10, pete special was 10 bucks too. We didn't really eat, aside from the funnel cake and that was delicious. When we did eat there was this taco truck outside of the bowling alley and that must have been the best tacos ive ever had(got the name! Tacos el bronco truck! Fantastic!) We had 12 people that needed two lanes side by side and we didn't have to wait too long for it to open up, considering how busy it was. Luckily there was a bar we could hang at while we waited. You have a choice between the regular lanes on one side and the cosmic bowling on the other side- any time of day.I was glad we got the cosmic side for a friend's 34 year old b'day bowling starting at 2PM on a Saturday. We got to hang with all the kiddies and listen to almost every Disney Channel singer spawn on the screens over the lanes, while neon lights were flashing all around. I think for like 4 hours of bowling (yeah that long) we paid about $16 each - including our shoes. To keep us fueled there was plenty to choose from the bar (it's own area you can sit at) and the typical bowling alley snack bar. My high score for the night was 86 and had a blast. WIN! read more

Sitting there waiting, the lady at the counter decided to get us started at the discounted rate so the night wouldn't be a complete waste. This bowling alley brought me back to the good old days of bowling between the color scheme, the music and even just the atmosphere. They are cheap in cost and Fridays have back to back games free for 3 hours for a group of 3 people or more. So it isn't bad. They have typically fast food items for sell and great bar with friendly and heavy on liquor bartender. The lady at the front was nice and engaging. The machine are a bit old school so sometimes balls get stuck more often then not. Additionally, when you get strikes/turkey machine wasn't representing all numbers/total correctly. Melody Lanes is definitely more than a hike out to Brooklyn if you're coming from the city. If you happen to find yourself out this way though with a hankering for bowling, this is a great place to come. Even if you like bowling and you're not in the area it's still a great spot to venture out to. There's a real 70's vibe to this place with the crazy colors to the staff working the place. This definitely adds to the fun. The bar offers a decent selection of drinks to make drunken bowling a quick variety. The group I was with ended up getting shots which showed up in cups instead of shot glasses. As you can imagine this will quickly mess you up! I don't think you can reserve lanes here which caused us to have to wait for a pretty lengthy time, but it ended up passing quickly with drinks and the funky decor. The lanes are well maintained and so are the selection of bowling balls. None of those crazy chipped up balls or the ones that have rough edges on the finger holes that cut up your fingers. The bartender has the most impressive muttonchops that I've EVER seen. That alone is good enough reason to come here. But, thankfully, that's not the only reason to bowl at Melody Lanes. This alley is legit and caters to seasoned/serious bowlers. The lanes are no joke; they are well taken care of. The bowling balls are in good shape, too. There are plenty balls available, with a ride range of finger hole sizes. Balls as light as 8 pounds and as heavy as 16 pounds are available at the alley. They're open until midnight during the week and on Sunday and until 3:00AM on Friday and Saturday. You can rent a lane for $70.00 for two hours during peak hours on a Friday or Saturday night [and the price drops a bit for weeknights and off-peak weekend hours], which is a pretty sweet deal if you ask me. If you'd rather go the pay-per-game route, it'll cost you between 6 and 8 bucks, depending on the day of the week/time of day. Also not too shabby. The woman that works behind the counter is a character and a half. She has no qualms whatsoever on calling you out if you're being a douchebag. If you're eating or drinking on the lanes, she WILL get on the loud speaker and tell you to stop. In front of the entire alley. If that's not embarrassing, I don't know what is. Don't get me wrong; she's nice...as long as you don't get on her bad side. There's a full bar and a full snack bar...everything that you could ever hope for at a bowling alley. I don't no how to rate this place really, it's not in great condition (like, at all) and the service is not friendly but it's the only bowling in the area, so it does the trick. Deals on weeknights, for example ladies night Tuesday (2 for 1 bowling). This is when me and friends have come, and it's usually no problem to get a lane right away. I really wanted to like the old bartender but he was very slow with the service. This place needs at least 2 young bartenders during the weekends. We paid for an hour to bowl, 20-25 minutes of that hour was lost due to us waiting for the bartender to make our simple drinks (vodka soda and cranberry + vodka). Did I also mention that they have this really good drink menu with blended drinks that look appetizing but they don't serve. When I asked for a drink from that menu the bartender told me he has nothing on that menu. So basically just order a beer or a well drink. So here's my experience: A friend was asking a worker (who's very pleasant) IF the bumpers can be set down, she didn't ask him to put it down! But ig he assumed it and put it down. We kept getting gutters bc we suck at bowling and decided we wanted bumpers back bc at this rate we're going to finish the game within 10 min lol. Other friend went to the blond lady and asked to have the bumpers back up, and she responded rudely and unprofessionally to her, "even five year olds can bowl". Like bro, were just trying to ask if we can have bumpers back up, not to be compared to a five year old. She could've just said "no, sorry!" So instead of listening to that old prick we asked the same pleasant worker (HES the one that made this place at least have a star) and he got it up! It was going fine until the same friend threw the ball really hard and one of the bumpers dropped. So we tried to pick it back up, we literally saw other ppl doing it before too. Next thing u know you hear her voice through the speakers saying to put the bumpers down, YOU GUYS ARE TOO OLD FOR BUMPERS (like seriously???) She said she'll kick us out, like sure she should, honestly, didnt even wanna be there anymore with her way of addressing this. If you're looking for a nice bowling alley where you can get decent customer service where the supplies aren't actually falling apart, this ain't for you. Listen, getting yelled at by the rude lady by the counter, where she decides she can screech at any minimal things she doesn't like seeing is not fun. But if that's what you like, I ain't judging. Coming in wih a group of friends, the first thing that seemed incredibly rude was when we approached her for our shoe sizes and our 10 round game. Now, as customers, the first thing that we should be having is the staff's full attention. Not sure if it's because we're young (we are students anyway), but young doesn't mean we're immature. She continues to have a full conversation with a lady beside us, while we WAITED patiently until she finished and decide to turn her attention to us. We're a nice group of people, so okay, whatever. It happens. So we got our shoe sizes, we got to our designated bowling alley, we played a round without the gutters. Asked the staff if we could pull the gutters up, which... it seemed reluctant for him, but he did it in a really begrudging way. Whatever. But then in the next few rounds, my friend accidentally pulled one gutter down with her ball. We decided to put the matter in our hands, knowing how the staff pulled the bumper up. Suddenly, we hear screaming from the rude lady behind the counter on the loud speaker. Let it be known that it's incredibly embarrassing because there's also other customers here. It's not like 'hey, please stop, you'll be destroying our property'. It's 'HEY, GET AWAY FROM THE GUTTERS. YOU SHOULDN'T EVEN BE PLAYING WITH GUTTERS. IF A FIVE YEAR OLD CAN DO IT, SO CAN YOU'. She insulted us. That last line was what ruined half the fun for us because we just wanted to have fun - even if it means we need to put the GUTTERS up. She even threatened to kick us out just for TOUCHING THE GUTTERS. We pay 55 dollars - the most expensive bowling alley ever - so we expect some decency and leniency on what we should and can do. Not to mention, said friend also went to the counter to approach her about the bumpers and asked if she could put it up, and lady's answer was still the same. Rude as fuck. By the end of it, we ended up trading shoes to the lady, but she said something about 'next time bring your own shoes'. Not sure if I heard it correctly, or if it's directed to us, but... still, rude. So yeah, fire her. I'm never coming back here again, and I encourage others to do the same. There's essentially no point in inquiring about the morning special. I've gone on 2 separate (weekday) occasions, and I just got turned away a 3rd time not even 10 minutes ago for the same reason this Sunday morning - "We're fully booked from 10:30AM on." I entered at 9:15 to a nearly empty alley and asked if I can purchase the morning special for 1 hour so I do not delay whatever preparations they need to do. The 'gentleman' at the desk declined my request. He did inform me that he'll have lanes available after 5pm. But when you have at least 20 lanes available right now, with 1 already in use despite 'having no lanes now,' why am I unable to purchase the time and usage of the lane when what looked like a father and son are already bowling right now? But I will not be one to complain about a father spending time with his son. I'm not an elite yelp member, I have never made an online review presence, so everybody is free to take my review with a grain of salt. Despite it possibly 'being a coincidence,' how convenient is it that 3 separate occasions I as a potential customer has attempted to request the morning special but been unable to because lanes are unavailable for a later "fully booked reservation" when the alley is nearly empty.. The only lesson I learned from this is to call prior to arriving to inquire, but that'll definitely prevent me from utilizing the full morning special as it begins right when doors open. read more

This place has so much potential. In a borough with grossly overpriced bowling, Melody should be an oasis - reasonable prices, close to public transit, old-school bowling. Instead, they lock the door around 4:30p for a "shift change" so that new arrivals have to wait 60-90 minutes to get help. Bar isn't open so you can't even have a couple of drinks or a snack while waiting for your lane. I've also never worked a job where shift change took 90 minutes but okay. Once texted that the lane was available, we came back, waited again (for some reason), got a lane and the bar still wasn't open and wouldn't be for yet another hour because the mechanic is also the bartender. Decorated around the time when Liberace was featured in the tabloids, this 70's relic oozes nostalgia and a creepy reminder of Ford's administration. The paint job however, is probably circa 1985 when the color purple was being iconized in the silver screen, in furry TV friends called Popples and in many crotches around the nation via shameless brands of spandex. Fortunately, inflation could not enter this time capsule, and I decided to eat a hamblehger that cost me $2 washingtons.... On another note, the arcade "section" did NOT, I repeat, NOT had any pacman, or galaga, or frogger... a lonely "bust-a-move" arcade machine of super-NES fame was the sole reminder of a probable video game "purge" back in the early 90's to make Melody Lanes sing-a-long with the changing times... This brings us to why I sucked at bowling that night. An erstwhile bowler extraordinaire in my acne years, I hadn't bowled since December 2005, and I looked forward to this star-studded bowling extravaganza. But alas, we were assigned the last lane next to an ugly ass blue wall which exacerbated the sense of aesthetic consternation. Yes, I blame it on the lanes. I only managed to do 1 strike, and that was only because of the timely intervention of ZZ Top's "Rough Boy" which was a welcome oldie I hadn't heard in a while. I'd say........3.5. As the setting of the pink versus green showdown, Melody Lanes provided a kitschy, '70s-inspired ambiance that I am guessing would never be found in Manhattan. Yes, this place is in Brooklyn. Like....deep Brooklyn. (You know, in the way that there is (1) the "South" where "South" is, say, Virginia, and then there is (2) the "dirty South," which would be, say, sweet home Alabama.) Anyway, so yes...this place is not only in Brooklyn, but deep Brooklyn. HOWEVER, after managing to get a group of 13 out there from the West Village via the D train, I'm convinced that this location is perfect. There may not be other bars around, but the bar in the bowling alley offered 8 oz. cups for "shots." Yes...I like that definition of "shots." And the 36th Street subway stop is super convenient, so do not, I beg of you, do NOT be intimidated by the "other" borough. Knocking down some starrage for the wait -- it was pretty busy that night, and we had to entertain ourselves for a good 30-45 minutes. The lanes are first come, first serve, so even calling ahead to check the wait time was not very useful. In the end, though, the pricing is good, and the lanes are pretty clean. Reasons why I might have won a game of bowling: 1. I have great form. 2. I look really, really good in bowling shoes. 3. A 12 lb, sparkly red ball is the perfect weight and aesthetic for the force of my roll meeting the weight and formation of the pins. 4. I used the fact that it was night bowling to intimidate my components, thus allowing them to be distracted by intense scenes of random, moving lights that I can only assume one experiences on E. 5. We were all drunk off of $9 pitchers of beer. 6. We ran out of time before the game could actually finish. Okay, so maybe 5 and 6 are the true reasons, but that doesn't discount the others. Well, except maybe 1 and 2.* When you go see the bartender for drinks--and you MUST visit the bartender, who is a cartoon character--take his advice and get the cheapest beer for $9/pitcher. It tastes fine--nay, better, because this is a bowling alley--and is almost half the cost of other beers. Then, return to your lane(s) and drink liberally. It will only improve your game. It will also help you laugh off all the times when the lane refuses to automatically clear your pins, and you have to ask an employee to do it. (Seriously, fix that problem. It eats up valuable time!) This is a really fun place to bowl. I went with a group of 10, and altogether it was $17 for each of us to play for 2 hours, which seems pretty reasonable to me. Is it sketchy that the food is kept all the way in the back with the bathrooms? Maybe. Did that stop me from eating delicious nachos when I got the munchies? No way! This is bowling, my friends, and you risk your life every time you enter an alley. I should know--the bowling alley in my hometown burned down back in the day. It made front page news, of course. This place is decent if your looking for a quick game without the glitz and glamour. Good for a quick last min children's birthday get together. It's not Bolwmor or anything but it's a good local old school bowling alley. The customer service was great during admission. The young lady that helped me make the right decision for my group. it didn't feel like she was trying to rip me off and genuinely tried to help. The only down side was the employee who was working with the food, she lack customer service. There was hardly any eye contact or acknowledgement and when we was thinking of ordering, before we could fix our lips to say anything she blurted it will take 30 mins. Also, they don't have the ramp for the younger children to push the bowling ball, so it made it hard for the little ones. People should be mindful of their environment. The quality of the lanes often suck, the balls are dented and yet you pay prices comparable to a four star dining experience for 2 hours on a lane? Well Melody Lanes is something different. This is real deal bowling. It's none of that techno-disco bowling crap. In fact, don't even try to get a lane on Friday night because that's league night. It's that kind of bowling alley. Nothing beats hanging out in a bowling alley, nothing. You got the smell of stale beer, overweight men named Tom with their bellies hanging from the bottom of their bowling shirts, not to mention people walking around in wrong-sized bowling shoes. I tell ya, there's no better time to be had. The electronic scoring system is awesome, because: 1. You don't have to keep score yourself, which ruins the chances for cheating 2. The numerous and random pictures of famous bowlers that come up after every roll of the ball 3. The ability to put a crazy ass name on the scoreboard, instead of your own. So you know I had to have the moniker "O. Hai Dare". I wanted to use "I.M. Sum Yung Gai" but it proved to be too long. The downside is that the place is rather small. I think there are ten lanes on each side of the building, I don't know. Which meant that we had to wait about 30 minutes for two lanes to open up. But being that this was the Sunday before Presidents Day I understood why the place was crowded. Big up's to the bartender who gave us shots in an 8 ounce plastic cup. I don't remember what was in it, but it tasted pretty good. And I cannot forget the cheese fries that I ordered. What's sad is that I had a full plate when I went to get my bowling shes, and when I returned it was half empty. Hmm, I wonder how the hell that happened? Bunch of moochers... Big Tip: On Sundays from 8pm - 12 midnight they have a special where its $8 for the first game and $3 per game after that. Pretty good deal, right? read more

Came here with a group of friends for Midnight Bowl, and we all had a great time. It's in the cut, cheap, and there's definitely a mixed crowd. The food is pretty good (for finger food) and the bartender is a hilarious and jolly man. The music is up to date, so if you're waiting for your turn, you'll probably be dancing ( I know I was).
