The other nice thing is since Westchester is such a small community 9 times out of 10 you don't have to wait for the hot books. They got me set up with a visitor ID so I could log in to a terminal however I would recommend bringing your own laptop and just logging in with their wifi. The terminals are only good for 1-2 hours and if you need to be there a full day it's better to just log in on your own laptop; you'll have the same access to everything as on the terminals. Put in a good 6 hours here and got a lot of good research done. The building itself is gorgeous and spacious and fronts a lively little park next to their walkable downtown area. It was a day well spent.

My mom's house has time and again proven to be an unworkable place due to loud TV watching, constant interruptions, and a slew of honey dos she lines up for me. When Maze was closed, I headed over here. It started out promising, I found a parking spot right in front and an empty table with a power strip next to it and got set up to work. I put on my headphones, not to listen to anything, but to help prevent distraction. And then it started. Like a storm rolling in. First with a few giggles, cascading into loud requests from a few kids, and quickly escalated into children running around, screaming laughing and shouting. One could have mistaken the place for a book-filled Gymboree. Full disclosure, children aren't my thing. While it would easy to blame them or attribute it to a parent or two letting their special snowflake run amok; this behavior was known and encouraged by staff. As I said, the library is small and it doesn't have a separate children's room. Maybe an interactive space is this small library's thing, but for the uninitiated, some level of disclosure would have been nice. Silly me for assuming that libraries = quiet spaces.

Adult reference area ladies kind of reminded me of the old school lunch ladies. Kinda crotchety, but still nice. Found what we were looking for or I should say who we were looking for. It is part of a library network, so if they do not have the item you are looking for, they will get it for you from a sibling library. The DVD collection is frequently updated and I am often able to get a new release way quicker than I would from Netflix. I love the fact that you can search the library's database and maintain your account online. I am one of those people who feel lost and confused walking into a library (so many choices!), so helping me narrow down what I want online is great. The library has quite a few computers available. It is also Wi-Fi ready, so you can bring your laptop and click away.

This is my favorite library, and I don't even live in Norridge/Harwood Heights! I come here at…read moreleast once a month to take out 30ish picture books for my son. The children's librarians are extremely helpful in helping me find books about certain topics/themes, and they always seem eager to assist. I studied for the NCLEX in the library's quiet room 11 years ago now, and now I'm coming here to use one of their many study rooms to do grad school homework! Nonresidents can book the study rooms for an hour at a time, or longer if nobody else needs it. Most of them have seating for up to 6 people and huge whiteboard on the wall, along with markers and an eraser. The library is the perfect place to get any kind of work done. I personally love the inexpensive printers and the card readers that allow you to pay with your credit card. There is a dedicated librarian who works at the tech desk that helps troubleshoot the computers and the printers. I will gladly continue to go out of my way to frequent this library, both for checking out books for my son and for homework/studying. I have not received such good service elsewhere.
