I had a Jade Leaf culinary grade matcha that I bought on Amazon some years back. At that time I was buying it for the price not the quality for my usage: which was to make matcha lattes with multi purpose of using it for baking if I ever got around to that which I didn't. I had just finished that pack and was going to order a new pack, but try the premium instead. Since MEM Tea is nearby where I live I decided to buy from here instead since the prices were similar to that on Amazon and I'd get it sooner to start using. The last time I went to MEM Tea was before the pandemic. I remember being able to get 1oz sample-size of any tea in the store if you didn't want to commit to a larger amount just yet. I'm not sure if they still do this because I was hoping to do that with the matcha but these are pre-packaged (And to be honest I didn't ask if it's still a thing). I was nervous to commit to the 2oz packet because I only have matcha once a week as a Friday treat and read that it's best to consume within 2 months of opening for optimum freshness. Ultimately to 2oz worked out because now my husband has hopped on to the matcha wagon to help me finish it. IT'S SO GOOD. I didn't really need any help as I knew exactly what I was going in the store for but I did ask questions on the quality of each matcha to get a better understanding of flavors and usage. I was also given the recommendation to preserve its freshness a little longer by storing it in the fridge and allowing it to come to room temperature before adding hot water. I use my electric frother to whisk the matcha and I've never seen matcha froth so much and the color is also brilliant. I have a Starbucks Glass mug that I like to have my matcha to see the magic happen in the cup. read more

I can't believe I didn't stop by MEM Tea sooner! It was amazing to see all the diverse tea options, from loose tea to tea powder (to make matcha/hojicha lattes!) I guess I should disclose the fact that I get my tea imported, so I am a lot harsher when reviewing teas I get locally. However, importing myself takes a lot more time and money. That being said, MEM tea is a fantastic shop. They carry a huge variety of teas, and I hear they supply the local Asian restaurants, so that's pretty cool. They are a little pricey if you're used to supermarket tea, but it's a huge step up in quality and taste, and completely worth it if you want to get into higher quality teas. They brew samples so you can even try some teas out as you shop. The staff is wonderful. They're friendly and always happy to answer questions, or find out answers for you if they don't know it off the top of their heads. I know they hosted events pre-pandemic. I hope they bring those back because the staff seem to be knowledgeable and I'd love to see more people get the chance to learn to love tea. For me, where they really shine is their limited selection of teaware. It's small but it's more than enough for anyone looking to get into various brewing methods. It's especially impressive when there is no other store in the area (or most areas) that carry any kind of specialty teaware. Their prices are really fair too. A 4/5 for selection, 4/5 for quality, 5/5 for value, 5/5 for access/convenience. Taste is 3/5 compared to my imported teas, but shoots up to 4/5 compared to supermarket teas. Overall, still a 5/5 because they are the best option in the entire Boston area. I would definitely recommend trying them out, especially if you're just starting to dip into loose teas or don't have the patience or means to get teas imported from the source overseas. read more

Recently visited MEM to put together a Ramadan Mubarak care package for out of state friends who love tea and treats. I was looking for non-caffeinated choices for them that would complement the beautiful gold-dusted chocolate dates from Yafa Bakery down the street (see my first Yelp review). The store had a warm and inviting atmosphere, great knowledgeable staff and a vast selection of globally sourced teas in nice, earthy packaging. I was surprised by several options that were caffeine-free with descriptions of the tasting notes that were simultaneously practical and muse-worthy. Just as easy to get lost on the Silk Road as it was effortless to choose a sampling of teas for my friends to savor with their delicacy dates (plus one or two caffeinated tea samples for myself to try). Tip: They host a monthly community tea tasting session with some education about new teas that sounds like fun but the hours might make it difficult to attend. I lived nearby, short-term, during the pandemic, so unfortunately was never able to go into the store or participate in any classes or tea tasting nights, but I've been ordering tea and tea ware from these folks for over a year now and couldn't be more pleased. Service has always been extremely fast and friendly, the tea ware is of excellent quality at a fair price, and, of course, the tea is tremendous. A bit pricey, but fair in value. The first thing I noticed when walking in was how amazing the place smells! It's like free aromatherapy. I've only tried a few teas so far, but everything has been tasty. I especially like the Sencha Fukamushi. It tastes to me like Hugo Tea's much more expensive Sencha Sedogawa. Looking forward to exploring some of their black and herbal teas. I had such an amazing visit to MEM tea shop. It was not at all what I pictured given the descriptions here of being a distributor/selling in bulk. I mentioned this to the very nice associate and he noted that the warehouse is in another town (Watertown I think?) on Elm St. there which makes for some confusion. This Davis Sq. location is wonderful - over 100 teas to choose from, all able to smell and see. We sampled one by choice and there were another two on the floor that were tasty as well. They know their tea, and have several pu'er cakes and teas to choose from, lovelt tea pots and other tea accoutrements, and a price and description list makes it easy(ier) to choose. As a bonus, they have tea tasting classes and other special events. I'm so glad I discovered this spot and can't wait to return! read more

The staff here, especially Mikaela (spelling?), are so friendly and helpful. They really know their stuff about the products they carry and answer all my questions every time I come. They also helped me do the math to figure out how much to buy to get the best deal (they offer 5% off on 8-15oz, 20% off on 1lb or more, and one free ounce per 16 ounces with a stamp card). They're also willing to brew a bit for you to sample if you're unsure whether you'll like something. And, of course, the most important part - their teas are absolutely BOMB! My #1 favorite was the sencha asatsuyu, but unfortunately they have sold out of it until further notice. Teas are around $5-10 an ounce. read more

Yes, herbal tea!!! There are so many teas in this store that when you walk in there is basically a whole table on the wall which is so totally awesome. I was so happy to find both vanilla rooibos as well as cocoa mint also caffeine-free. The options are endless but obviously, go w/ what you like. Things come in various sizes which is really great, they're already bagged in advance so you can just get the type you want easily. The service is great too so they are helpful in answering questions. There are also various tea holders/vessels/pots too. So check it out. Local is the way to go! read more

I stayed in Boston last summer and had the best Moroccan Mint tea at Tatte cafe. I found out it was MEM Tea and started ordering that and other flavors from Phoenix. I really wish I'd known about the store when I was there. Every time I order, they send me sample packets of other teas, so my orders get bigger and bigger each time. I first learned about MEM tea over 10 years ago when I worked at a bakery on the Cambridge/Somerville line. Since then I have been a dedicated customer and always happy to see them being served at local coffee shops (Golden Green at Ula's was a staple for a while). I love loose leaf tea, specifically green. It has been a joy ordering from them over the years and their deliveries over the last 2 years is always exciting. I've been trying new teas in small quantities and ordering my favorites so I have plenty. Today I tried for the first time the Golden Buds Milk Oolong: Jin Xuan - it is AMAZING! We got to sample some of the teas too and I gotta say it met my standards and I am an extreme tea snob. MEM Tea just opened a small location in Davis Square! They do not make cups of tea there for purchase, but they do sell their teas by the ounce! This is a difference from their Watertown location which only sells by the pound, mostly to local businesses and restaurants. You can smell the teas here! They also use this location to train people about how to best brew tea. While I wish they brewed in-house beverages since I love their tea, I will be back to pick up new varieties soon! read more

This is the MEM Tea outlet office. MEM primarily sells to restaurants, cafes and retail stores, so this location is not really a storefront (and the sign in the window is tiny). However, they are very helpful when you go in and will give you a price list and tea description if you ask. None of the teas are available for smelling - for that you'll have to go to Christina's in Inman Sq. Minimum size is one pound (makes about 200 cups). Prices range from about $15 for gunpowder to $100 for Matcha, but almost all others are in the $20s. The prices include shipping. The tea is the freshest and highest quality I've found in Boston. Tea Zone is on par, but maybe not as good. Tealuxe is not. I haven't tried Teavana. I think you will not find a better price, except maybe at Asian grocers, but then the quality and age suffer. As a side note, they are one of the rare vendors of finely ground rooibos suitable for espresso machines. Rooibos espresso (or cappuccino) makes a great rich bedtime drink! read more

Amazing high quality teas for a good price. Because MEM sells their tea in bulk (for restaurants) at this location, I go to other shops to buy a small quantity. Here are some good places to smell and buy the teas: Christina's Spices, Dadealus, and Cardullos (all in Cambridge) Many high end restaurants and coffee shops serve MEM tea prepared as well. My favorites are lemon ginger, vanilla roobis, and bergamot roobis. read more

I first tried their tea at Treats on Washington when I first moved to Boston. It's definitely a cut above the local standard in most other towns (and I'm from San Francisco, which is all foodies). I don't know that they are so great that I would buy them for my home (I use a lot of Upton tea at home actually) but I am glad that they're available at most cafes here because it's really solid tea. They teach a tea basics class here! I came with a large group and we thought we'd get like 40 minutes and a few teas but the instructor was so enthusiastic that we were there for two hours. My wife and I love tea. We were very excited when we found MEM Tea and each bought some. Mine was Saigon Cinnamon. My wife bought a mint tea. Great selection. The problem was when we brewed the tea. Incredibly weak..we even doubled the recommended amount and doubled the steep time. I ended up pouring my tea into the sink. I've bought teas many places. Have loved tea all of my life (I'm in my 6th decade of life). Neither my wife or I am impressed with MEM Tea. We won't be purchasing more tea from them. Obviously, YMMV. read more

I finally went here after having some wonderful iced tea at a restaurant in Cambridge. I was very impressed with the selection and service. I ended up going back less than a week later to try some other kinds. It's not cheap, but if you like tea, you'll be like a kid in a candy store. I will definitely be returning. This is the highest quality tea store in the Greater Boston area. The staff are all tea experts! They offer every kind of tea from pu'erh to oolong to rooibos and have some flavored blends, but mostly real tea. The classes are excellent. I've liked everything I've had especially the Rooibos Decorated and the Yunnan Golden Buds. They typically have samples in the store! The prices are typical for the quality of the teas, and are even cheaper per cup than places like DavidsTea (where you're paying for fun packaging and added flavor not tea quality). read more

First off MEM tea is great, we normally purchase it from Cardullos when in Harvard Square. My wife and I was driving through Somerville and decided to pop into the MEM shop. All we can say is the staff were extremely rude, unhelpful, we felt like we were bothering them. We felt we were putting them out JUST being in the store. After leaving and vowing never to return, we drove to Cardullos and purchased what we were looking for. Now we realise they still got the sale through Cardullos, we just thought the MEM shop itself would be more inviting. Horrible staff and customer service. read more
