This place has more variety of wargaming materials than any other store on Long Island save The Warstore's warehouse in Southold. The selection and number of stuff to browse through and purchase is only bested by a friggin' warehouse! There is a large selection of models, some obscure ones as well, and magazines, some old and out of print, paints, tools, sprays, board games, card games, rockets, terrain, and best of all is James, the owner, who is there most of the time. Jim has been in business at Men at Arms hobby for over 15 years (that I personally have been going there). The place expanded into the next-door suites temporarily, then re consolidated (sign of the times, unfortunately). The business hours are whacky (purely at the discretion of the proprietor) so call before you plan on going there, just to make sure they're open. They have mostly tabletop gaming setups, board games, etc (Warhammer, Pen n Paper, etc). with a few traditional hobby shop things (model planes, tanks, cars, etc). I remember going there as a young child and getting treated fairly. There are no rose colored glasses here, if you go in it is obvious the place is struggling, but that is why it deserved our support! read more

From miniatures, to role playing to rules and models there is nothing unknown to Jim. The store is small but packed with great rules and everything else. This is a real gem of a hobby store for those who like models, role playing games and wargames. The store is small but has a nice stock of models, especially 1/35, wargames and board games, many of the books used by gamers (a big Osprey collection) as well as miniatures. There are also gaming and modeling supplies, paints and other supplies in store. Call ahead to ask if you are looking for something special because it is a small, well organized, store and stock is limited. However, the prices are very good, much better than you can probably get from ebay or on-line and while stock is limited, there are some real treats to be found. The store might not everything you can find on-line (and really, what store can?) but the owner carries some real choice items. The proprietor, Jim, is great, very personable and will help you out. Excellent and friendly customer service from someone who loves this stuff. If you are into wargaming, sci-fi, fantasy and if are looking for one of the last of the great LI hobby shops, this is a real treat to a bygone time when there were more of these kinds of stores available. read more

Been going here since I was 13. I'm 43. That's a LONG time. I have amazing memories of this place, and it's owner, Jim, who has always loved gaming and it shows. It rocked at the height of Dungeons & Dragons, back in the 80's. It rocked in the 90's, for Magic the Gathering. It rocks now, for table-top gaming, Warhammer, and more obscure pen and paper stuff. Took a drive out there and I feel like I wasted my time. The man at the counter was friendly. The store was clean. The selection was much less than I would've hoped. I read the reviews about it being more about gaming, but I found that selection limited. The various games represented was a small amount. Almost as if only certain games and accessories would be sold. Model kits were sorely lacking. A very limited supply. Some of the kits were either from someone's collection or have been there so long they've grown mold. I appreciate the obscure kits that were there, but I felt like it was very limited in selection. Ship models only had about 12 kits, if that many. Sorry but I was disappointed here. The second star is due to trying to keep hobby shops alive. But they need to up their game. read more

Oh how I wish I lived closer to this wonderful shop! It's just over an hour drive for me but whenever I am in Suffolk Co. I always visit. I've been going to Men-At-Arms since 1984 or 1985, buying metal miniatures, model kits, books and supplies. Jim has a small place with a limited selection but what he has is the odd, off-beat and unusual: paints (such a Vallejo) and supplies (Mr. Surfacer primers for example) that you don't often find in other hobby shops. There's an excellent selection of Osprey publications, magazines and gaming items too. I've always enjoyed to talking to him and have many fine memories of my visits out there. read more
