today I was to get my carpet installed and my landlord did not order padding, only carpet. so in a panic because the installers were waiting at Menards to pick up. I called Alisun in the flooring department and she gave me an estimate. She was so knowledgeable, was very helpful and she walked me through everything. i came into the store to order and she made everything such a pleasant experience and was so good at her job that i had to make sure I gave her acknowledgment way to go thank you Menards! read more

I ordered an exterior door for my home almost 100 miles to the northeast - closest Menards available. When ordering the door, the salesperson asked what width were the wall studs. I admitted I didn't think about that so would have to come back. She then asked what year the house was built. I said 1972. Her response was very emphatic that there was no way it then could be 6 inch studs if built in 1972. I then said the porch for which I was replacing the door was built in the late 80s or early 90s. She said that it was still unlikely those walls would be 6 inch. Since we were also planning to eventually replace the exterior door to an upstairs deck (original 1972 construction), my wife suggested we buy the door and if it did not fit the porch, we would use it to replace the upstairs door and get the porch door next year. The salesperson said "good plan". You guessed it, the original house was built with 6 inch exterior walls. In order to return it I had to pay a $250 restocking charge because it was a 'special order' and I had signed for it, which I assumed was the approval of the price - no mention at time of sale about a restocking charge. I argued my case to a couple of 'higher ups' to no avail. By the time my remodeling is done, they will have lost a couple thousand dollars in profit for all the other material I plan to purchase. read more

I really really wanted to love this place - they are the only hardware store in town and also a locally owned chain. Here are a few reasons why I can't; keep in mind that the store is a 45-minute round trip from our place: - Went to Menard's to purchase all items for a bathroom remodel. We ordered a custom shower door, vanity, and top. At the time we told the associate that we're excited about this remodel etc, so they knew it was all for the same project. When we received the custom order, the top did not fit on the vanity! When I called to ask about a return, they assumed no responsibility and wanted to charge me a hefty restock fee. (I found a guy who cut down the top so it would fit - if Menard's does this to you, reach out and I'll provide contact info) - Was in the middle of a project when we discovered that the manufacturer had sent us an incorrect bolt. We needed to finish the project so we headed to Menard's for a replacement. Found the person who worked in the department, handed him the bolt we were trying to match, and asked for his help. He went to some kind of thing where you screw the bolt into it and it's supposed to tell you what it is; he tested it and very confidently selected a matching bolt for us. Guess what - when we got home it was the wrong bolt! - Many times when I would go there to purchase something, I would look for the person in the department and ask for their assistance. With very few exceptions, the employee in question knew less than I did about the product. After a few times where I ended up wandering around the store with them or being referred to their app when I asked about location, I stopped even trying. They have a nice selection but you better know EXACTLY what you want and make sure it's appropriate for your application BEFORE setting foot in there. They take "know before you go" to a whole new level and it's not a good one. Would I recommend? Nope nope nope if there are ANY other options Would I return? Very upsetting we needed two rolls of the same carpet for our living room bought them at Sametime. He told us pick up out back .Get home it's time to put down carpet we wanted in first roll 6 inches short we measured OK we we just figure it out ,nope the other carpet was a whole different carpet .We had to borrow a truck to get this .Now we can't just return it with out it being a big problem. Worst menards store I've ever been in. The people don't seem to care that you need help finding something. The overall "I don't give a s#/% attitude" . Then yesterday, I'm disabled and am on oxygen and use their scooter. Clearly no threat to anyone. Let me just say that I've spent hundreds of thousands of dollars at menards stores all over the state of Wisconsin. I was shopping in the tools area when a "cheap" (under $5) knife sharpener caught my eye. These are the ones unpackaged and displayed in the manufactures plastic pail. I was thinking I'd buy one. I took one out of the pail that looked like it had been used before and drew my pocket knife across it. In a very short period of time I was approached by store security and a manager that treated me as some sort of criminal and embarrassing me in front of other customers. They told me I could not use the merch before I bought it. SERIOUSLY!! WHERE DOSE THIS NONSENSE STOP. John Menard spends copious amounts of money to make sure a disabled old man doesn't cut into his profit margin on a "under $5" pocket knife sharpener. Y'all better not try on that hat or sit in that chair or....., I can think of many things that fit this scenario. In my opinion these actions were totally uncalled for. I ordered 11- 8' T posts and 12 tomato cages. The T posts were steel so they were very heavy . I ordered these on line and they charged my card right away even tho I didn't pick them up for a week later. Upon arriving at the customer service desk, they sent us to the Garden Center to pick them up and said that they would all be set aside for us. At the Garden Center they told us, no you have to pick them up at shipping and receiving. Ok. Went to shipping and receiving and they said oh we don't have them... some of them haven't been picked yet. Really? I placed this order 15 days ago and have been getting emails from Menards every two days saying your order is ready to pick up. So when my husband was back in shipping and receiving they had gotten the quantity 10 of eight footers ordered mixed up with 8 - 10 footers! I stopped up at the customer service desk before I left and told the first gentleman who told me first to go to the garden center. I happened to meet him in shipping and receiving so he had experienced the whole ******* **uc with me and on the way out at the customer service desk I told him I was so unhappy and frustrated with this whole ordeal that should have just been abled to be picked up at the drive-through.. And his reply was "Well, I'm sorry that's the way we do things here and I thought to myself. OK that's fine. to which I replied, "This is the way I do things... Very frustrated with this place. They are lucky this store is one of the only places to go in Rice Lake. The first frustration was regarding Brian or Ryan (not sure his name, tall blond guy?) in the building department. I was buying stones for a fireplace, boxes were torn open, many pieces were gone. As we all know, due to covid, the stock has been a problem lately so I was out of options. I asked for a discount on a 30 dollar box and he said he could give me .50 cents off or through the box away... what? I said but haft the product is gone. He walks away in the mid conversation. My second complaint is, I went to return products, I had my receipts for most of my stuff, but some I did not which I was fine with store credit. The worker asked for our license and credit card. Which is fine, but then I went back to return a light with a receipt (same situation), I fortunately spoke with a different worker who could not have been nicer. She returned our light, didn't need the card or our license. So really the $300 worth of stuff I had a reciept for on the previous trip should have gone striaght back to the card. I will spend the 300 then look forr a different store even if I have to drive to a different town. read more

I ordered windows on a very busy day. Lines formed workers called in backup. Required delivery, super professional quick service in scheduling the truck. I'm not sure what's going on but for the last year whenever we go to menards there are extremely few people who know what they are doing. We are now putting an addition on to our house. First they could not find our order when we called to get a delivery time, then when they delivered they shorted us on OSB and trusses. So now we have to wait so they can order 4 more trusses - the order was correct but they filled it completely wrong. Frustrating read more

They are also fairly knowledgeable about the products they are dealing with and if they aren't, they will always find someone who can. Bought a washer and dryer. Sales person was great but the delivery service was awful. High priced and the delivery guys lied about leveling the dryer. They said they leveled the dryer but the feet were still in the package. They did not leave the product registration card for the washer and when I called the store, they don't have any. Now I get to waste my time calling whirlpool. PITIFUL! Don't use and pay for delivery if you don't have to. read more

I made a special order for log siding. The first time it was damaged (looked like fork truck damage). We were told that they would hand sort it and reorder enough to make up for the damaged pieces. Replacements arrived at store and guess what, more fork damage. Pieces of our order were laying on the pavement in front of the order. They reordered the entire order this time. It comes in and more damage. One manager told us to take all of the orders so we could get what we needed from all of the orders and hopefully cut off bad parts to get the job done. Another manager now tells us that we need to bring back the damaged pieces. Are they trying to make us sort through and do their job for them? It is 70 miles every time we drive there! And now this has taken so long that I'm supposed to install log siding in freezing cold temps? All I wanted was an undamaged order that came on time for us to install this year (my original order was made in August). All I got is wasted gas, wasted time, frustration and now a house that gets to spend the winter with only house wrap for siding. I don't understand why they couldn't have checked our order and each reorder for issues before we made each trip with our truck and trailer only to come home empty handed due to more damage. Really classy Menards Rice Lake. Really flipping classy. Just got another phone message from them, trying to decide if it's worth ruining my Sunday to return the call. read more
