Mendez Upholstery was highly recommended by Fabric Warehouse in Belleville and an antique shop where I had previously purchased a table in Bloomfield. I needed an antique couch and a small chair reupholstered. After an exchange of phone calls, they arrived (albeit late) on a Saturday morning to provide me with an estimate for both items. I am so impressed with the fit, and the price was nearly half that of a competing estimate. They don't really speak English, but it was easy enough to mime what I wanted, and I could have used google translate if necessary. I've used Mendez several times over the past 6 years to refresh my furniture bought over 30 years ago in NC when furniture was still being made in NC. It's structurally excellent. Mendez reupholstered my living room couch and love seat; two accent chairs and my 8 dining room chairs. Their work is superb; the price is very reasonable and fair; and the work is always finished on time or early. My dining room chairs now need new cushions and I'm going to Mendez. Between my wife and myself, we have called this place several times in the last two weeks and it has been very difficult getting anyone on the phone. My wife had to call consistently until someone actually picked up the phone. I called last week and left a message and still haven't received a call back, prompting me to call two more times. I finally got someone on the phone and I could barely understand what the person was saying, and I believe I have an ability to understand many accents, thick and thin. Because we weren't getting what we needed over the phone, we made our way to the store. My wife said the people inside were very unfriendly and it was incredibly dusty inside (I guess that's to be expected for an upholstery store). All in all, we had a rather poor experience trying to interact with this company. read more

Mr. Mendez reupholstered two antique wingback chairs for me. Redoing the stuffing and fabric with welting and portions broken up by the frame. He did both chairs for $600. They're gorgeous and are commented on by everyone who sees them. read more

I really wanted to support a local business and selected this one to repair two chairs based on the reviews here. I am giving this place 1 star because technically, the chairs were "fixed" in that they don't wobble now. But the repair was of really poor quality - glue and sawdust in the glue are pretty obvious - and b/c the wood legs and sides of my chairs are chewed up - much of the top finish is also removed. It looks as though someone used harsh clamps of some sort that literally gouged the wood and removed the finish. The other reason is that the store is dirty - not just messy. And one of my chairs was stored under a pile of stuff - it had been there only a few days. I now have to pay someone else to undue this damage and redo the repair. I'm not asking for my money back b/c again, the chairs no longer wobble and the man was very nice and did the "repair" promptly. Can't comment re upholstery which I did not have done. But will not use again. read more
