We arrived at the campground around 4pm and the office was closed already. We thought that was…read morestrange. We took our late arrival packet and drove to our spot. The campground had maybe 3-4 campers, it was desolate. Our spot was right next to the dumping station and we thought we'd try to call the number and see if we could move a few spots over. After waiting on a hold loop for 5 minutes, we gave up. We set up in our assigned spot. The bathrooms appeared clean but showers were outdated. The site was quiet. When we woke up we discovered little ants all over the outside and inside of our camper. They were crawling up our doorway into the camper. We killed as many as possible and packed up as quickly as possible. We didn't have any open food in the camper, it was packed in containers in our truck. Again - I wish we were not next to the dumping station. I'm hoping our next stop we don't open up to a ton of ants. Those little ants are big pests and hard to get rid of and not pleasant in a tent. This campground is not owned by KOA anymore - Kiefer Campgrounds are now the owners.

Saturday evening there was a band playing and a food truck there another couple had came over to our campsite and asked if we wanted to play cornhole we always bring it with us and instead of doing that we all ended up talking well after the band stopped they were breaking down and my husband turned our stereo on. The four of us are in our 60s, we aren't young kids that play music really super loud. There was no on either side of us. Nor behind us it was a big open field. The manager Loretta over to our site guns a blazing telling us that we to turn the music down that she was getting a bunch of complaints actually the band was still breaking down and the food truck just left and we were having a conversation so there's no way that the music was loud. My husband jokingly said well as soon as you leave, we'll just turn it back up lol even meeting this couple for the very first time they knew that he was joking as I did also. she told us that we should pack up and leave right then and there, knowing that we were drinking alcoholic beverages all day. Who does that kind of stuff nobody I know. I would never allow anybody to leave my home after drinking all day. She tried to come and talk to me the next day, but she has a hair up her ass for my husband. She always seems to have something to bitch about and we spend a lot of money there. we will never go back there. Also, the place is a mess. There was an inch and a half of water in the bathrooms by the pool. The pool was so scummy and disgusting. And if she thinks we were making loud noise, try going to playground at 11:30 at night when there's a bunch of kids running around and screaming and playing until their parents decide to go and tell to come in. 1130 at night kids at a playground. Yet she has to yell at 60 year old people for having a radio on please. Loretta is disrespectful talks bad about her other employees which she can't keep anybody there they quit and they talk bad about her too. We will never go there again, and I would never advise my worst enemy to go there. We were also told by an employee that 90 percent of the people that are there live there! And you can tell... rusted out campers, clothes hanging outside, toys in their yards. what a dump!

The campground is walking distance to hiking trails and lots of beautiful tall trees and spring flowers. Lots of pets and kids in the campground.

Just weat tight and light clothing and do a tick check in the evenings. Spray your clothes, socks, shoes and everywhere. You and the kids will be fine. Bring old towels to use at the river. Bring paper towels and dish towels, cooking oil and seasoning. Paper plates if you want to cut dish washing time. The kitchens have just the basics, I brought an instant pot and a portable gas grill. Or bring charcoal, lighter fluid and a lighter. They provide plenty of bedding and bath towels and hand soap but bring body soap and shampoo. The cabins are great but you will be in a state park so don't expect a five star hotel. The beds are not the most comfortable but way better than the ground. The cabin was the best state park cabin we have stayed in. It was clean and a great place for a family reunion. We rented the 4 bedroom cabin. There were 12 of us ranging in age from 6 months to 67 years old. We enjoyed hiking, biking, river playing, creek stomping, caves, smores in the fire pitand an all arou.d great week. What makes this park standout, however, is the staff. Every host we interacted with was friendly and helpful no matter the ask. This place is actually quiet at 10:00pm, 99% of the guests were delightful, the owners and employees went above and beyond to make our stay wonderful, and we even participated in their Christmas in July festivities which included a potluck dinner and decorating contest. They came around with a cooler full of popsicles, handing them out to everyone to help keep us cool such an unexpected and appreciated gesture! The park itself is very well-kept and inviting. They even had chalk out for the kids to draw with, as well as a giant Jenga set for them to play. It's rare to see that level of care and community spirit, and it made such a positive impression. There was a hay ride and speed limit of 5 miles an hour is enforced ( lots of kids on bikes) the camp ground is close to many state parks. The abbey restaurant is a 20 minute drive and home to awesome food. This is a good base for lots of activities. A great place to go with in 2 hours of St. Louis.
