We went to Time Out Market (Mercado da Ribeira) on our first night in Lisbon. Was already getting crowded at 6:30 and we were here in February. Can't imagine what the crowds are like in summer. It is walking distance from the city center but could be a bit far for some. Was about .5km for us and we were about dead center in the Baixa area. The market is pretty big with rows of community tables in the center and the restaurants all around the outside. We had Miguel Castro de Silva and it as delicious. Some cod croquettes and a cod with julienne potatoes and egg. One of the best dishes we had in Lisbon. Beer and wine i. The middle of the market and a lot of the restaurants also have beer and wine available. Some of the restaurants have some hidden seating around the outside which would be a little more private if you want to both eat at the same place. Would highly recommend coming here for at least one meal if you are staying in downtown Lisbon. read more

Food hauls are one of my favorite places to check out as they'll usually have plenty of food and drinks options for everyone to enjoy. Time Out Market here in Lisbon is one of those places and a must check-out for anyone. The open space along with cafeteria style benches made this feel like you're likely to meet somebody new. I enjoyed being able to grab a glass of wine and enjoy the loud but chic atmosphere of the market. For my vegan friends - a few shops have some options but it's not as plentiful as I would have hoped. I recommend eating beforehand or coming here just for a drink if you're looking for a heartier meal. read more

We finally got inside the Mercado da Ribeira (next door to the Time Out Marketplace) as it's always been closed the times we made it down to the Ribeira district. It doesn't hold a candle to the really great food markets like La Boqueria in Barcelona, or the DeKalb in Georgia; however, it's expansive and full of fresh produce that can't be beat--and very reasonably priced! (When we were there, only two-thirds of the fresh produce and half of the meat vendors were there. It's a VERY local kind of place (not much English spoken--unlike the adjoining Time Out Marketplace which is loaded with tourists), so some of the older vendors were not very friendly or inviting. (One old gal, after we said, "Bom Dia!" to her, literally turned her head downward to look at her phone! Naturally, she didn't get our business, and we bought a bunch of fresh produce from the vendor on the opposite side who WAS friendly. So there! She sat there sullen and crusty. Lol!!) The bottom line: If I lived in Lisbon, I'd be doing a lot of produce shopping here! read more

Everything is good here. Susana Felicidade's razor class with rice soup is actually a risotto and fabulous. A few stalls to the right, Henrique do Passoa (sp) makes a roasted baby pig sandwich with crackling skin that will melt in your mouth. Sea Me is also fabulous. Or just close your eyes and point; you can't go wrong with any of the restaurants there. Too many good places, not enough days. read more

This place, Time Out Market was quite an experience. When you first arrive, if eating, be sure to grab seats which are very difficult to find at 8 pm at night. Different stalls will give you a beeper for when your ordered food is ready. There is quite a variety of food offered. The shrimp and mussels were fabulous. The guys had beers which were great. Pastis de Nota are a famous pastry in Portugal. You can actually watch them being made. You must try them while visiting. This market represents famous chefs throughout Portugal. Food is mostly sold here. We were hoping to find souvenirs. Outside the market are a handful of booths to check out in the evening. There are a few shops open during the day within walking distance. We found a great one selling reasonably priced pottery. All in all, this market is a must see! read more

TimeOut Market is insannnnne! Too many shops with too many delicious items on the menu. I really wish I had the stomach to try all of it. Is it pricey? Yes. Is the food good? Yes. Go crazy! Just try whichever stall is calling your name. They'll give you a buzzer, so go look for a seat while you wait. The food towards the back was my favorite. I love visiting local markets. So at first I was very excited to hear about Mercado da Ribeira. And then we walked in and found out it had undergone a major renovation a couple years ago and is now the Time Out Market. Don't get me wrong, an awesome food hall of the city's best is a great idea but it would have been nice if the legacy of Lisbon's oldest market shone through. That said, we tried 2 different food stalls and both were terrific! I do recommend it if you are in that particular neighborhood and need a quick but delicious meal. read more

One of the best places to eat in Lisbon. The best and most typical dishes are all concentrated here in the Mercado. There is so much variety. We decided not to settle with just one booth, but to try many. We tried an octopus hot dog, the pica pau, the nata pies and freshly squeezed smoothies. The Cachorro Quente was super delicious, so much flavor. The typical pasteis de Nata were also flavorful and cooked to perfection. Crowded, noisy, happy and good food. The restaurants here are fantastic as long as you stick to Portuguese food. This sort of model should be duplicated in every large population center in the United States. The outer ring of the market serves as a fresh products market (veggies, fruit, meat, seafood, ...). In the center are great cutting edge restaurants that serve up great meals that any foodie would enjoy. In the very center are the seating and lots of great places to get something to drink (cocktails, wine, beer, fresh squeezed juice,...). Some of my best meals in Portugal were here. I enjoyed tuna tartare, steak tartare, pata negra jamon with giant fresh figs, fresh bread, very large shucked oysters, ... there are many great options to choose from. read more

Wow! This location (aka Timeout Market) was recommended by a friend and what a perfect spot. The 3 bays of this traditional market are all different. I arrived just as the farmer's market (vegetables) was closing in one bay. The center aisle had flower markets and a few small shops and THEN there was the amazing food court section. Lots and lots of booths with menus posted. I loved that several of the booths were chef driven (cozinha de chef) and so fine dining in a casual environment (especially for the single traveler) and at a good price point. Was so tempted by both the chocolate (huge line) and the eclair booths (eclairs are internationally delicious) but after my meal I was just too full. Great spot to sample a variety of foods, especially if your group wants different things. read more

Since I am from the Philly area, this reminded me of the Lisbon version of Reading Terminal Market. Oh wait, this place opened a decade before RTM, so it's the other way around. On one side of the market you have a fresh food market for locals to buy. In the middle, you have about 20 places to eat; ranging from Chinese and Sushi to charcuterie, traditional Portuguese food and pizza. It has it all. So if you are looking for a quick lunch/dinner and want a lot of choices for all the picky eaters, this is a great place to visit. read more

Hands down one of the top three highlights during my trip to Lisbon!! The level of intricacy and quality of food was truly impressive!! I had the risotto negro: risotto with squid ink topped with seaweed and seared scallops. Amazing indeed!! The chef coupled it with a glass of red ( I wish I would have asked the name because it was marvelous, no frets though because I'll be back!!) The energy and atmosphere alone are captivating; anytime you pair an amazing experience with stellar cuisine you always come out on top! I rolled solo so it wasn't difficult to find a seat but it was packed on Monday around 1700, I can only imagine the scene/ craze on the weekends!! Busy but fun place where you and your friends can eat regardless of your food preferences. If you're interested in some edible souvenirs I recommend the offer of canned Minor fish, it's better quality and cheaper than the touristy stuff in the city center. Also pasteis de nata at Manteigaria are delicious. IMO better than in the city center bakeries (unless you get the original in Belém). read more

It's a cute place to check out and try different foods. It's difficult to find seats especially if there are more than two of you. It's fun because it's full of people and the space is modern. There are restaurants that have their own seating on the outskirts of the main area, nice seafood restaurants. We ended up not staying and eating here because it was packed. Awesome place to visit when in Lisboa, this market has many food venders wrapped around under one roof. They have from seafood to burgers, and the food is worth every euro. The environment is definitely a busy one, they also have a collection of dessert stands in the center part of the market. Try the burgers, great veggie option. Another good stand is the thai cuisine, the curry plates are definitely a must. Oh, and just outside the door of the market, you can find a stand with 1euro beers and 1,5euro wine for after dinner drinks. read more

Good, overpriced food. While this food market is certainly interesting (I've been to Lisbon twice now) and has lots of different options to satisfy whatever needs you might have, it's overpriced for the portion sizes and the food that you get. It's fancier than a regular food court for sure, but the price doesn't justify the small amount of food you get from any one of the restaurants. I wound up getting some mussels and calamari from one of the seafood restaurants and was sorely disappointed by the amount of food I got. I went to an ice cream shop afterwards in the same market and even though the ice cream itself was good, I wound up paying something like $4 for a scoop of ice cream which was ridiculous. So it would be a 5 stars except the prices were just far too high for my liking. read more

Food halls are becoming hugely popular globally, much to my delight - they're often slightly overpriced, but the food is usually good quality and you can find a bunch of regional specialties in one place. Came here on the last day of my stay in Lisbon. Huge hall with a diverse set of offerings. This was my first experience with a type of place like this but the food offerings were fresh and turnover at all the restaurants was high, indicative of the interest. The market was packed however and finding seating is much of a game, either waiting uncomfortably close to people who are seated, pacing through the venue, or scouting out tables. Your review helps others learn aI was a little hesitant to test out this indoor grocery and market because I assumed it would be an overpriced tourist trap. I was pleasantly surprised by both the pleasant aesthetic and the quality of the food, which wasn't cheap but certainly didn't strike me as exorbitant. The sheer number of choices can be overwhelming at first. There's probably around 30 stalls in the main cafeteria that sell virtually everything from fine local cheeses and charcuterie, to traditional dishes and desserts, to more contemporary takes on Portuguese cuisine and foreign offerings as well. I ended up taking the traditional route. First, I ordered a cold octopus salad from one of the stalls. It was drizzled with a simple sauce and came with toasted bread - quite tasty. I stopped by a restaurant outside the large food court (by the grocery section) to try Caldo Verde, a popular vegetable soup. I found it quite bland and unsatisfactory to be honest. Seeking something more substantial, I visited Miguel Castro e Silva, where I opted for Bacalhau a Bras, which some consider to be the city's most famous dish. The plate came with a crunchy and soft "cake" of stir-fried eggs, potatoes, and shredded cod and went well with the recommended light red wine. It was savory and filling, although didn't wow me or anything. The food was pretty good, there were a ton of choices, and the atmosphere was great. I came here in the summer--had a layover and found this place thanks to Lonely Planet. This place reminds me a lot of Chelsea Market but better food in my opinion. They have such a huge selection of food stands and the food is so gourmet!! They had burgers to Thai to traditional Portuguese food. Of course, I stuck to Portuguese. I forget which stand I went to but I ordered this amazing ocean cod on a bed of sauteed spinach, translucent onions on a chick pea mousse which was unique believe it or not (it's NOT HUMMUS) and a cornmeal crumble. You sit in communal area which is great especially if you're traveling solo. However, no one really talks to each other. If I'm ever in Lisbon, I'd come back here :D read more
