Thomas Edison Park has its own parking lot (which has a lot of potholes), but if you're here to use one of the 16 tennis courts, parking in one of the MCC lots and walking through the chain-link fence gate is quicker. From dawn to dusk on weekdays, the gate leading to Rartian Center is open, which allows office employees to take walks in the park during lunchtime. The baseball, softball, and soccer fields are popular with locals on the weekends, as evidenced by the contents of nearby trash cans. The asphalt walkways are popular with the cheeky Canadian geese, who seem to enjoy deliberately defecating where people walk rather than on the grass. Metal benches and bleachers are strewn throughout the park, along with some wooden picnic tables by the parking lot. Interestingly, this park is the only one in Middlesex County designated as a "Model Airplane Field". Since the wide, open, unobstructed fields here lend themselves to being very windy, this park is also a good place to fly kites.

LOCKDOWN REVIEW: Independence Park has continued to serve as a community park for residents in the…read moreneighborhood all during throughout the executive order.  People still walk, jog, and run around the perimeter of the park. Like all other parks, the sections where social distancing cannot be practiced are closed (there's signage throughout the park) - like the playground and various sports courts/fields.  It's one of the more beautiful parks in Newark. In fact, it was designed by the Olmsted brothers, the sons of Frederick Law Olmsted who designed Central Park.

It's stated to be 12.6 acres and features all you want in a decent park - athletic fields, basketball courts, a playground and walking paths. The park is in the Ironbound/Down Neck part of Newark but is said to be the smallest, only beaten by Riverside park. It's also said that this park was to be called East side park, but Independence park is more fitting. Each part of Newark seems to have their own park and this one fits the area nicely. With the many schools nearby it's likely favored by the kids after school lets out. The park looks well kept and that is fitting as the area surrounding it is nice as well.

I came here the other day while walking my dog and soon regretted it. There was broken glass from…read moreglass bottles all over the walkway - some large, some small pieces. I had to pick up my dog and carry him for fear of him stepping on the glass. This would be a nice park if the walkway were better maintained. For now, I will stay away, and I suggest any dog owners and parents of small kids to do the same.

The Forgotten Park…read more Leonard Gordon Park is the oldest & largest in Jersey City Heights.First constructed in the early 1900's and is approximately 5.7 acres in size. It was named after a NY native who served in the Union Army during the Civil War.After moving to Jersey City,Dr. Gordon is best known around here for a few things.They are the placement of the sculpture of Soldiers & Sailors Memorial outside of City Hall.Also of note, he helped the founding of the Free public library of Jersey City.His bust is in the front lobby to this very day. Enough of the history of this park/person... It needs a facelift and some looking after.The park has a gazebo that is right in the center and is falling apart.With paint chips all over the place and wood planks falling down.The walking paths are concrete and all cracked with not much lighting in the area that I noticed.Even the Bull & Bear statues which this Park known for, can use a little TLC. There is a very nice World War I memorial that was dedicated on November 9th,1930 when you first enter the park. Currently under construction is a playground for the kids on your right when first entering the park.Out front on the Kennedy Blvd entrance way are a couple of nice little gardens which are very nice to see. City administration is working on a reclamation project to spruce up this grand old park.Hopefully it works.I'd hate to see this park disappear & fall to the hands of the less than desirable folks that can hang here.

After couple of wrong turns, I found myself in a city-block-sized heaven. Quiet park, with tallest trees I've seen on the island. Benches to sit on, grass to play on, shade of the trees comforting and welcoming in heat of summer. Well taken care of, perfectly blue hydrangea was blooming in the corner. Peace.

Just a few weeks ago they had a Harvest Festival; with scarecrow making and pumpkin painting. The staff of rangers there is always a lovely bunch. Yesterday I went for a hike through this park. You need a map unless you're lucky enough to be with…read morepeople who know the trails. I was lucky! When you first drive up there is parking. There is a bathroom and a building where you can get a map and ask questions. The young lady working there was very accommodating. The trails were pretty well kept. You're walking through the woods basically except for a time or two to cross the road. Ya I would've got lost map and all. We passed an area where they had different types of peacocks, it was like a little peacock zoo. Of course there's beautiful areas with a pond. We saw more then one. The trails we took were a total of 3.38 miles, we did that in 11/2 hours and they went back through the trails again. It's really a beautiful walk/hike that I'd love to go through on a slower pace and photograph more. Not scary if you're going alone. I believe dogs are allowed on leash.

I feel really lucky to have this park within walking distance!…read more This is the sweetest little neighborhood park. There's a small dog park side-by-side with a kids playground. The perimeter of the park is lined with all different kinds of flowers and plants, along with spring bulbs. Everyone at the park is so wholesome, it feels like a real neighborhood hideaway. It's never too busy, everyone is friendly, and all of amenities are well-maintained. If you're within a five block perimeter, you should definitely visit if you haven't already. We're so lucky to have this little hidden gem.

The park has tennis courts, baseball stadium, basketball court, soccer field, runners track and a little kids playground as well. The park is fairly clean and you can even watch the teachers take the pre-schoolers on a little walk as well weekly. In my opinion this is a great example that with little changes and everyone taking pride in their community the city of Newark can be restored to the great city it was back in the time of the great Industrial Boom.

A playground and fieldhouse are also in this park by the Passaic River. If you are not into sports, it's worth visiting at least once if you are into history. It's on the National Register of Historic Places because Riverbank Park was designed by the Olmsted brothers. It's a nice park for sports-aficionados and history buffs.
