The birthing center is fantastic! I wish all doctors' appointments and interactions with hospital staff left me feeling like I do when I go to the birthing center. The midwives and nurses are knowledgeable, compassionate, and very very good at what they do. When I was deciding where to have my baby, I chose the birthing center because of the low intervention model (I usually get real anxious when it comes to hospitals and medical procedures), support for a non-medicated birth, and beneficial practices like delayed cord clamping, not washing baby right away, and skin-to-skin. It seemed very homey and calming and I liked that the birthing center was in the hospital (as opposed to a stand alone center), so if an emergency happened, I could get immediate care. The center has four birthing suites: spring, summer, fall, and winter. You can pick which one you want; the layout and color themes are slightly different. However, every room has a shower, a tub you can labor in (though you can't do a water birth), a big bed where both you and your partner are encouraged to snuggle baby after the birth (I think it might be a queen), and various labor stuff (two different kinds of birthing balls, a rope thing hanging from the ceiling, etc.). During birth they have nitrous oxide available for pain relief. You typically get to go home the day of the birth if everything checks out or you have the option of staying in a maternity recovery room upstairs. I had a great experience with all my prenatal appointments and recently had my 6 week follow up. I never feel rushed; I feel heard and respected when I come with my long list of questions (it was my first pregnancy). You get to have appointments with each of the midwives throughout your pregnancy so that whenever you deliver, you'll already be familiar with whichever midwife is on call at the time. So I ended up having my baby on the regular labor and delivery floor because we were high risk and the birthing center can only do low risk births (baby came early at 33 weeks). However, the midwife on call, Maria, still came to attend the birth. Her presence, support, and coaching were invaluable during labor! I wouldn't say I felt calm per se, but I definitely felt less stressed and more confident knowing she was there. I was still able to deliver baby vaginally and without pain medication, which I attribute in large part to Maria's support and the natural birthing class I took through the center. If/when my spouse and I decide to have another baby, I would definitely choose the birthing center again (and hopefully be able to actually give birth there)! Oh and one last thing, one of their staff is a certified lactation consultant, so you can ask Amanda any and all breastfeeding questions you have. She runs The Lactation Circle (TLC) every Thursday morning where you can come with your baby and do a weighted feed (so you know how much your baby is eating), get help with baby's latch, and just hang out with other moms and babies. I wanted to have a drug free natural childbirth because I was terrified at the thought of having an epidural. Mercy Birthing Center opened in September 2014 - just in time for my due date in December! I was immediately impressed with the quality of care I received, and have not stopped being impressed after my daughters birth. The midwives, Diana and Elizabeth, took great interest in both myself and my partner. The office staff is wonderful and knows us by name and face. The birthing center offers classes on natural childbirth, which we took, and it allowed us to become comfortable in the space before our birth, learn strategies to ease labor, and we even made some friends! Now, to the experience of giving birth. There are four birthing suites that have a large bed, a shower, and a tub. I spent most of my labor alternating between the shower and the tub, which was very soothing during painful contractions. Both Elizabeth and Diana helped me immensely in managing my anxiety over the pain, and after 10 hours of labor I had my beautiful, healthy baby girl! I could go on, but suffice it to say the birthing center is an asset to Mercy and the staff and midwives are extremely professional and caring. I should note however, since they are such a new facility at this time they are only accepting low risk births - you should check their website for how that is defined. A wonderful experience! Love them !!!! They're very personable and work so hard to ensure labor and delivery can go as smoothly as possible . As a vbac patient from my first birth , Mercy has a rule you have to deliver upstairs in the labor and delivery unit regardless how many successful vbacs you have. Though that was a drag at first , I went on to have aN AMAZING vbac delivery in their low intervention room! . a hot tub was filled upon my arrival and the shower and queen size bed were wonderful . I am now due with another baby and so excited for the same experience . Love MBC! read more

I have 3 kids. I decided try the birthing center for baby 2. My appointments were relaxed and not rushed. I took a 6 week long natural birth class & loved it. When I went into labor, they were great and helped me settle down. I was panicking because they said I was only 3 cm dilated the 2 times they checked and it was like a flashback to my first bad birth experience. I was at the birthing center about 2-3 hours before baby 2 was born & then 12 hours after. I went to the lactation circle. I had an oversupply and my son wasn't latching. He was gaining weight so they just told me to not worry. Well once I went back to work, all the problems he had latching got worse. He couldn't get milk from breast or bottle. He started loosing weight. I went to Mercy Lactation dept and saw no less than 4 lactation consultants at my appt and they said they didn't know what was wrong and just keep offering breast and bottles and keep pumping. I asked if he had a lip/tongue tie and they refused to look because he gained weight in the beginning. I ended up at little flower & they said he had a severe tongue tie and a minor lip tie. Once that was revised, he could drink from both breast & bottle without issue. Then I got pregnant with baby 3. I told them at every appointment I did not want to know how dilated I was because that is was caused me to panic with baby 2. Every appt I discussed that checking dilation wasn't a good predictor of my progress for either baby 1 or baby 2 so I don't want to know. Well, they picked up on the don't tell me part, but not the "it's not a good predictor of my progress" part. They tried to send me home about 2 hours after I first got there. I refused & opted to walk around the hospital lobby. I also tried to eat a muffin from the lobby cafe but ended up vomiting immediately and got wheeled back to the birthing center by patient transport. They let me try nitrous oxide, which I guess helped some but I wish they had told me how dry it would make your lips and throat. My lips bled for several days from the NO. They gave me IV fluids because I was dehydrated and vomiting. My contractions started to slow so they wanted to send me home. I refused. They persisted. I said please no and they proceeded to wheel me out into the hallway and leave me there. I felt abandoned. My husband drove me home against my will. After we got home, 15 minutes away, my labor picked back up again. I told my husband to call them. They said stay home. I had him call 4 times. The fourth time he called, we had been home about 3 hours and my contractions were every other minute. They still said stay home. Just get in the tub and contractions will slow down. Contractions did not slow down. I had my baby at home in the bathtub 10 minutes after getting in, 3.5 hours after they sent me home. Because I was alone, I ended up having a 2nd degree tear. Instead of just recovering and bonding with my new baby, it became a "now what?" moment. Like, how do we get me out of this bathtub holding a newborn that's still attached to me by the umbilical cord when I'm super weak from being in labor and vomiting for the last 24 hours. They said just to lay down with the baby in the backseat. So the first thing my husband got to do when our baby was born was to uninstall the car seat, drive us to the hospital and then reinstall the car seat. We were there 4 hours before what felt like being kicked out. I would have liked to wait until morning (it was like 4 am). Then I had breastfeeding problems again. I went to lactation circle again and once again, they missed a minor tongue tie and major lip tie. I even asked and I was assured it was nothing to worry about. Then I started having burning nipples so I went in for an appointment with their LC. She diagnosed it as thrush. My baby did not have white patches. I was give APNO and gentian violet for 7 days. I did not improve by day 6 so they added 14 days of fluconazole and another week gentian violet. I finally made it into little flower again (it took a couple of weeks to get in). My son's lip and tongue were fixed and they said I likely never had thrush since baby didn't have white patches and can they do a milk culture? I tested positive for multidrug resistant staph. 5 weeks of antibiotic and the infection was finally gone. There are some very nice women who work there. I just feel like I slipped through the cracks since I have a somewhat atypical labor pattern. It's frustrating because they advocate letting labor happen in its own time at its own pace. But when it comes time for that, I felt like I was inconveniencing them. In hindsight, I would hire a doula but birth is super expensive with insurance so shelling out another $1000 is a big deal. Just overall, I was super let down and the more I think about it, the madder I get. I'm working on just letting it go but that's easier said than done. read more

I found out I was expecting in December 2019. There were a few normal appointments before COVID emerged and things switched up a bit. Despite everything going on, my husband was still able to attend our anatomy scan and every appointment after. The midwives were SO CARING during my prenatal visits and any time I called in between. Starting at about 35 weeks, my blood pressure and labs started signaling I was headed towards preeclampsia. The midwives decided I should be induced. Instead of just transferring me to an OB when I had to deliver in the L&D upstairs instead of the BC (I was so devastated!) the midwives followed me upstairs and continued to be my primary care through everything. The Birthing Center is beautiful, yes. But the midwives are truly what make going to the BC incredible. I couldn't recommend them and their nurses enough. I will continue to see them for my wellness visits as well as for any future babies I may have! read more
