We tried Chinese herbal therapies, and even leaned into a genetic panel for answers to try to help her, and I appreciated that they considered many more angles than previous vets we consulted. I now take my two dogs there and would not consider going anywhere else. disclaimer: i have conversed with my dog to get his blessing before writing this review :) i have been bringing my children (aka animals) to mercy vet for approximately 8-10 years. in that time, i have had both dr. jackie and dr. nobrega provide care to my dogs and cat. as many people have said, it is difficult to become a client here because this is not your regular vet. it's not a vca facility. it's not run the way most veterinary practices are, so if you're looking for quick in and out and the most standard of care regimens, you should probably look elsewhere but what i do notice is that for those of us who believe in the power of these individuals to care for, cure and be empathetic to our animals' plights, this is an amazing place that you will drive miles to get to and to which you will keep coming back. the bonds created between animal, owner and vet at mercy vet are bonds. for. life. i do not live on mercer island yet i drive to bring my animals there. over the years my pets have received all types of care from the vets at mercy vet: from acupuncture and reiki, to dental cleanings, to routine check up's, and yes, the horrendously emotional euthanasia. every single experience has had the same common denominator: compassion and quality time spent with someone who cared as much about me as my animal. i've shared tears and heartache with these women over my animals' passing: they are human beings who share our pain and rejoice with us when our animals' health situations improve. yes, it's a small staff. yes, sometimes things are hectic and the phone calls go to voicemail but that's usually because they are tending to other clients! yes, the time spent in consultation is billed in 15 min increments but it actually ends up being far more efficient. from the vet techs to the office staff, to the people who come in to work behind the scenes on surgery days, these people CARE and it shows! i have seen both vets go out of their way to help me problem solve with creative (oftentimes holistic) solutions that another veterinarian probably wouldn't even suggest. i have gotten calls from the staff the day after procedures to check on my animals. i have had office staff stay late so i could race across i90 to pick up prescriptions. i could go on and on. i won't take my animals anywhere else. i thank my lucky stars for dr. jackie sehn and dr. marta nobrega. regardless of how stressed i may be by something going on with my animals, i always know they are in good hands. and i trust whatever recommendations they have. simply put, they are the best in the business so do yourself a favor and ask to be put on the waiting list for when they accept new patients. if you are lucky enough to snag a spot on their calendar, you'll probably end up joining the rest of us who sing their praises. i bet your animal will be happy, too! read more

I first met Dr Jackie about 30 years ago when she was still in Redmond near my home. My 7 or 8 year old cat had been diagnosed as prematurely ageing by my former vet. Dr Jackie got down on the floor with my sweet kitty to get acquainted. Changed her diet, she became a kitten again and lived a long, healthy life! Since then and the clinic's opening on Mercer Island, Dr Jackie has looked after my cats and dogs throughout their lives. There is no question in my mind that Dr. Jackie and her staff are the best veterinarian practice. My dog would not have lived for 18 3/4 years without them. I brought my cockapoo, Sammy, to Dr. Jackie back in 2003 when he was very ill. From my experience, many vets would treat symptoms and pump your dogs up with too much medication that results in other complications instead of treating your pet holistically and addressing all possible causes, i.e. food, energy/emotion, environment, ... When I first saw Dr. Jackie, she helped me ween Sammy off of all his medication that was causing him to throw up blood, and change his diet. Sammy then lived 16+ more years in relative comfort. Yes, it's initially hard to get in as a new patient, as they are a small practice and Mercy Vet makes sure it takes time with the animal *and* the person. We have seen Dr. Nobrega off and on for acupuncture for our bullmastiff for a few years. She helped us come up with a plan to a few lbs off our boy since he had a bad knee and hip from the abuse he suffered before we rescued him. Also, she works within your budget, offering up easy solutions, such as adding a vegetable slurry to help with inflammation and joint pain. I can get all these things at the grocery. I never have an issue with the phone not being answered; sometimes I do get sent to VM, but I always have a call back within a few hours. Mercy Vet covers everything from regular day to day vaccines to alternative therapies. read more

My dog was injured from a fall back in May. She was in a lot of pain and a bit hunched when she walked. We took her to her vet, they poked and proded her, did x-rays and found nothing wrong with her bones, so my vet told me that the problem must be muscular somewhere and gave me muscle relaxers and pain killers to bring home. Well my girl did not have a very good reaction to those. She got better, then worse again. I went back to the vet and she told me to just keep giving her painkillers, etc.... so I decided to get a second opinion from Mercy Vet who I've heard so much about from friends. First I would like to state how impressed I was/am at the knowledge, professionalism, and empathy of the woman who answered my phonecall. She asked very good and in-depth questions in order to figure out which vet I should see. My experience with other vet receptionists is that they are only there to schedule an appointment. Not the case. Just talking to the receptionist made me optomistic about my dog's case. Then I saw Dr. Obando (Jackie) she was amazing. She got down on the floor with my dog to make her comfortable and gave her lots of cookies. Then she did a full examination of her spine and hind legs. She found nothing so she started checking the muscles and ribs... sure enough we finally pinpointed the problem... a bruised rib. Well, Jackie did a chiro correction and gave us a couple of homeopathic pain relievers to give our dog if she wasn't feeling better in the next couple of days. It was just so nice to finally know what specifically was going on. Immediately after that visit, our dog was totally back to herself. When we got home, she tore apart her toy bin, tryed to play tug of war with us and ran around the backyard... this was something we hadn't seen her do in about a month. The change was amazing to see. I can't thank Dr. Obando enough. We're going to them for everything from now on. Also for those people who say it's expensive. Maybe the visit is expensive, but they do preventative care so you don't have to come back as often. I got more results and paid less there than I ever have at my regular vet. Excellent care for my dog who had a wood stick lodged in the roof of his mouth. I called from the car after my regular vet (who I had just paid $2800 for dental care, etc) couldn't take him. The techs and Dr Jackie came out to the car and immediately took him, sedated him and removed the stick. Needless to say, they just got a new patient. So wonderful to have people who really care about pets (even ones they don't know). It was very scary and they saved his life. read more

"We" started seeing Dr. Obando about 2 years ago from a referral of a friend who recognized we were running out of options due to my dog's chronic GI issues the previous 3 years. Pup was up at night and urgent whining at the door around the clock. Three previous vets suggested indefinite prescription medication and invasive scopes to deal, not treat, the issue of chronic diarrhea. Dr. Obando confidently said that we know what is wrong--we know he isn't digesting his food properly and we will fix it. She laid out a smart, conservative diet plan and said that if it didn't work, she had a plan B, C and even D. Plan A worked by making his food and getting him off grains and chicken. No meds, no urgent rushes to the door and healthy! Easiest check I ever wrote. read more

I wasn't there for much more than a year. The critter-dog I have belongs officially to my partner (he is the financially responsible party, but I know the day-to-day issues). When our Vet, Dr. Brienen, wasn't available (on vacation), I was scheduled with the owner, Dr. Jackie (I'd never met her before). Unfortunately, I got stuck in an accident on the bridge, so I called in to notify them and find out what THEY preferred to do. They replied to come on in anyway, they'd fit me in. Incredibly, Dr. Jackie was being huffy towards me and it devolved into her shouting (I kid you not) **even when I had called to tell them and ask what their preference would be**. I'm from the East Coast, so I defended myself (naturally). I was asked to re-schedule under the guise of "caring for the dog". I wonder why I did, but I set a date for when Dr. Brienen returned. On my way out I was handed a mess of paperwork - created for unknown reasons - sending me away with dog notes re: this appointment (I know why I came in there...). There's more. As I'm starting to drive away, my phone rings: It's the receptionist. Dr. Jackie found out I had scheduled with Dr. Brienen and insisted that it be changed to an appointment with HER. Well, that wasn't going to happen. AND THEN (it hasn't ended, not yet) ... The receptionist calls MY PARTNER in order to "tattle" on me, that I was 'mis-behaving'. They thought he'd like to know (What?). When I got home to peruse the mess of papers, I saw that reception had written the word NANNY under my name on all the forms. THE VET THOUGHT THEY WERE CALLING MY BOSS TO TELL HIM HOW BADLY THE "DOG-NANNY" WAS BEHAVING. In the end, it was a good laugh. But, no, I don't recommened this vet. read more

I had a conference call with one of the doctors here for two reasons. One, I was looking for a vet. Two, I needed someone to review medical records of am older cat I was looking to adopt that had a chronic illness. Ease of set up for conference call. A pleasant conversation as well as honesty about present and future medical complications coming down the pike. This was exactly what I wanted and I was clear on asking the vet to be honest with me. 4 stars for the convenience of setting up the call and for an honest and helpful demeanor plus the kudos for being a conventional and homeopathic vet. Good nutrition for healthy pets - how great is this after that China pet food scare? However, potential clients need to be aware that there is a waiting list and that Mercy Vet is not cheap....$45 per 15 minutes of time can add up quickly to $90. I appreciate that a holistic approach is always first and then western style only if the other does not work. I am always impressed when I go in. I also like that Dr. Obando always brings herself level with my dog; and if that means sitting on the floor, she just does. - She always makes dogs feel good/comfortable -even when it is exam time. I love Dr. Obando. I have had my dogs at veterinary practices where the vets are know-it-alls and talk down to their clients. After all, THEY have the degree--you know nothing as the pet's owner (who lives with the animal 24/7). Dr. Obando is the antithesis of the arrogant vet. She is a considerate listener, who has made me feel like a partner in my dog's care, not an bystander. She also is a wonderful teacher, coming alongside to help me learn what I need to know, but not backing up the truck and dumping her knowledge on me with medical jargon that I can't follow. I also love Dr. Obando's energy level--the spark in her eyes as she comes to a new revelation. Veterinary medicine is a delight to her, not just what she does to pay the bills. I have now had contact with Dr. Brienen too. She seems equally wonderful. By Mercy Vet's website, my understanding was that it was nearly impossible to get a first time appointment at this clinic. But when my dog had serious needs, the doors were wide open. I would highly recommend Mercy Vet, especially if you've been disappointed with the results of western medicine at conventional veterinary clinics. For instance, I use cool green tea to glean tears stains now, as it is soft of my dog's eyes, cleans them, and mild disinfects the area. It was a wonderful tip! Jackie is the most amazing vet. We've been taking the poodle there since he was just a little bugger. Our dog has this weird inflammatory food allergy that causes him to puke all the time. Jackie encouraged us to try to get to the bottom of what was causing the boy's problems rather than just medicating him. I was skeptical at first, but she figured out his food allergy and we can now control his pukey problem with a prescription dog food rather than a lifetime of prednisone (and all its unwelcome side effects!) Thank you Jackie!!! Not only is she dedicated to holistic veterinary medicine, her bedside manner is top-notch too. She is just so sweet to my dog, it brings tears to my eyes! We have used her since our beagle was five weeks old, and now he's nearly 15! Did you know that Jackie is a doggie chiropractor, and that her office uses acupuncture, too? She does not rely solely on allopathic medicines, but does not hesitate to prescribe them if they are needed. I have been taking my dogs here from 2008 - 2011, moved out of state, and again when I moved back in 2017. I'm an established patient. I think they are helpful with food issues, but that is all. They state they are a "full service" vet, but when I requested testing for my dog who had blood diarrhea for two months they were reluctant, Dr. Jackie stating "why do you want to spend your money on that he doesn't need a blood test?". His last blood test was with them and it had been a year, but he was having bloody stool for over 6 weeks! I had been to their office in September 2019 and again about six week later with no improvement. I went in for testing and still got the run around, charged for a 30 minute visit $150 ($75 per 15 minutes), but no blood work, nothing but talking. I found out that they have an outside service come to their office to do an ultrasound, and they do not receive any compensation for this since it all goes to the vet or vet tech doing the ultrasound. They only get their $75 for 15 minutes for the consult. Nothing more. I finally realized that my dog wasn't getting any better and went as an emergency to another vet hospital. I'm so happy I did because they tested for Addison's Disease and my dog came back positive. If I would have continued with them, he would never have been diagnosed until it was possibly too late. At least now with this diagnosis he will be treated and can live a normal life. Without the diagnosis, and without the proper meds Addison's is fatal. I sent an email telling her I didn't get the testing I wanted, no further along, and asked for additional testing, and telling her I had a 15 minute visit not a 30 minute visit, and she became nasty. I'd paid their fees before, and while I think they are very expensive, I paid them since I hoped my dog would eventually get better. It didn't take 30 minutes to tell me to switch my dog to pork which was her solution for the bloody diarrhea, and IF it continued (it had been going on for 2 months already) we could do an ultrasound. In the meantime, her solution, after paying for a 30 minute consult was again, a change to another protein. Even I know that after 2 months of bloody diarrhea (and I showed her photos) you need to find out the source of the problem. I would not recommend this vet for anything more than food issues. My opinion is that her motivation is not my dog's health. I have learned my lesson. read more

I called to make a teeth cleaning for my dog. A very nice lady informed me that since my dog was not a patient, I would need to send them a photo of proof of my dogs most recent annual visit. I did so when I got off the phone. The next day, I called to make an appointment. Another individual answered the phone and told me that I could not make an appointment if I was not a current customer. I told her that I talked to someone else the day before, and she had no problem with it. What is different? She slammed the phone on me. I'm not kidding. I called back, but she did not pick up. I called back, but she did not pick up. I called back and another individual picked up and identified herself as the veterinarian. I told her what had just happened. She angrily said that she was short staffed and that she was overwhelmed. She got nasty and asked if "Do you know of a good receptionist?" I told her no, but the one she had was not helping her business. She repeated her being overwhelmed and said if I wanted to talk more, I should email her and hung up. Now I know where her receptionist got her training. Things happen for a reason, and in this reviewer's opinion, I am glad to have found out how overwhelmed this this business is, and I would never would never trust my dog in their care. Mercy vet was *great* when my cat was healthy. Wonderful teeth cleaning, often without anesthesia. Maybe they are more of a dog-centric vet--I wouldn't advise bringing your cat here long term. When kidney disease showed up on my cat's senior feline blood panel test results, I was told we caught it really early and to give her some extra potassium (later I found out from another vet that by the time kidney disease shows up on test results, the cat's kidneys are very compromised). A few months later my former chow-hound cat lost interest in food and changed some behaviors. One of the vets at Mercy looked at her and in so many words asked me why I'd bothered to bring her in, that there was nothing really wrong with her aside from what they'd already found. Within months my cat crashed and I took her to Emerald City emergency vet, who told me she was stage 4 kidney disease. Kitty was there on an IV for 4 days and they wanted to keep her longer, but kitty wasn't eating and wanted to go home. I was told by Emerald that she had a few weeks to a few months left. That was a year ago and thanks to daily home IV treatments, iron supplement, and Epakitin, my cat is still here. I understand that my cat looked surprisingly healthy and well-groomed for being so sick, but I would hope that a vet would be more well-versed in kidney disease, as it's so common in cats, and know enough to investigate further on a disease they knew the cat already had. There is a lot more you can do for feline kidney disease than just potassium. My lesson: take your cat to a cats-only vet. I'm at Seattle Cat Clinic now and I love them. They are up on the latest for cats. read more

Dr. Jackie is so loaded with knowledge and guidance that I feel like I learn something new from her every time I'm there. I very much appreciate the fact that they have alternative options available (like chiropractic, homeopathy, and non-traditional vaccine options) if needed or requested by the customer. I have two cats with CRF (chronic renal failure)-- they've been in and out of hospitals for the past few years. My one little guy who has remained stable for several years recently crashed and the emergency hospital advised in his recovery that I get him a probiotic called Azodyl. The doctor told me the hospital didn't carry it, but that I could get it from Mercy Vet on Mercer Island. I called Mercy Vet and they told me that I could not purchase the medicine from them. That they would only sell it to their own clients and since I wasn't a client yet I could not purchase it. I'm sorry, but I thought you were in the business of saving animals lives? Apparently not. My dying cat needs a particular medicine that you sell, and that I, as a paying customer would like to buy, but I can't purchase it because I'm not a Mercy Vet client? Well who said I wasn't going to become one? Is my money not as good as your other clients money? Your clinic needs to get a policy where you are willing to work collaboratively with animal hospitals in the area for the betterment of the animals, and for the betterment of your business. How are you going to gain new clients if people referred to you by the local animal hospitals are shot down? It's not even a prescription medicine-- it's over the counter, but for me to get it takes 5-7 business days via mail and my cat needs it right away. Why couldn't you just sell me some and order more for your clinic? I'm sure you have a mark up on it and would make some money off of me anyway. You could have even required that I make an appointment, rather than just shoot me down. It was just a shocking response for me to call your clinic (at the recommendation of an emergency animal hospital doctor), tell you that my cat is dying and I need to purchase some medicine that you carry, and be told "we carry a limited supply of this medicine and so we only sell it to our clients." Thanks. I'm really inclined to become one of your clients now--not. Although based on the response I received, I guess becoming a client may be exclusive also. read more

I have had my share of bad experiences with vets but have been happy with my regular vet for the last three or four years. A few weeks though I decided to get a second opinion from Mercy Vet regarding some digestive issues with my older cat and they were able to squeeze me in this morning. I couldn't be happier with how the appointment went. Dr. Nobrega was cordial, professional and well informed and told me that I was on the right track with the dietary changes that I had made but also had some good suggestions about what else to do. Many vets. like many human doctors seem to think in terms of treatment rather than prevention but Dr. Nobrega made a point of saying that 90% of digestive issues with animals are food-related and was well informed about the best food to feed your cats. It's hard for me to imagine anyone better than Mercy Vet. read more

If it weren't for Dr. Obando, my dog would be dead by now. She has several chronic issues, and was rapidly starving to death, in spite of eating voraciously. A complete stranger approached me at Greenlake about 5 years ago, asked me kindly about my dog, and recommended Dr Obando. Sure enough, Dr. Obando knew how to help. She's also the only vet my dog trusts and likes. Gone are the barking and lunging vet visits of our past. They have been replaced with lots of dog treats and an occasional kiss. (From the dog, not Dr. Obando.) ;-) As for the cost issues others have mentioned, I completely disagree. I've spent way more money at other vets in expensive medications, unnecessary tests, and prescription foods. Tasha is on several supplements and meds that she will need for the rest of her life. On more than one occasion, Dr. Obando has recommended places where I can purchase them more cheaply than at her clinic and she is willing and responsive when asked to send presctptions to discount pharmacies. When I found a place even cheaper for the digestive enzymes, she asked if I'd be willing to share that info with her other clients. This clinic is definitely one of the best. As others have mentioned, it can take a while to get in as a new client. I believe I waited a month for my first appointment. But once you are a client of record, appointments are usually available within a day or two. read more

Jackie and Marta are the best vets I have ever met. Over the years I have taken numerous pets to various vets. But now I won't go anywhere else. My dog needed emergency surgery. Marta patched her up and she is now as good as new. I used to go to vets closer to home, but my wife insisted on going to Mercy Vet because she knows the excellent staff. Thank goodness for that, because they are simply the best. If you love your pets, get them the best health care possible. I have had an ongoing 4 year relationship with Mercy vet for my 12 lb 5 year old doxie. Until recently, I felt I could trust them to give her good care. Unfortunately, after the techs did an anal glad expression ($22) a week ago, my dog acted like she was wounded. i called, and was told to give it a day or so. Called again a few days later on Saturday, and was told that Dr Jackie was full and if my dog was in pain she should go to a vet, but not Mercy vet since she was busy. I did take her to another vet, paid for another office call and still felt it was important for Mercy vet to do a recheck after they had hurt my dog. I had been going to Mercy for a number of issues but not for paperwork for international travel. I still took her in to Mercy for supplements, food advice, dental care and anal glad expression. Until this year when I had health issues, I had taken her out of the country for 3 to 4 months at a time and have used a vet in another country for some of her care when I am there. A few weeks ago, I was told that my dog needed an annual exam since she had not had it for 2 years. I agreed and made an appointment that I had to cancel due to my fractured pelvis. When I called last Monday to see if Dr Jackie would agree to do a recheck for my dog as she still appeared to be wounded, she called me and with a lot anger told me that since I hadn't been to her for an annual exam for 2 years, and that I had seen another vet (for the international health certificate) that I should see a vet that I trust. So she fired me and my little doxie! Even when I tried to tell her that I was ready to pay for the annual, but that I thought my dog deserved a recheck after being hurt, she was angry, sarcastic ("I'm Sorry about your broken pelvis") but you should see a vet that you Trust. So she left me no opening or option to work out a solution. Business must be good. I feel like we were kicked out because I dared to ask that Mercy vet do a recheck at no charge of my wounded dog. Jackie's manner was angry and abusive. I hope she reads this and finds a way to deal with people in a more considerate and honest manner. read more

My dog almost died under Dr. Obando / Sehn's care. The 19 month old dog was previously healthy, happy and doing well. She saw him twice over 10 days - by the time I got him to a competent vet, he had pneumonia in both lungs, had been sick the entire time, had lost 10% of his body weight because he wasn't eating and by labs that she finally decided to draw, had a clear bacterial infection. Yet all she recommended at that point was Echinasea. A herbal treatment for a bacterial infection that would have killed him. Wow. He is still in the hospital getting IV fluids, IV antibiotics, and antiinflammatories. I strongly advise you against taking your beloved pet to Mercy Vet. They may be ok if all you want is a well-pet check. Unless you are willing to let your pet die, while supposedly under a vet's care, do not take a sick animal there. read more

Given all the good reviews I was disappointed by Mercy Vet. Took 9 days to get an appointment - admittedly this was because we are a new customer and this shows how popular they are. Also Dr Jackie was very attentive and carrying and I appreciated that. My dog has been scratching excessively and they prescribed Benadryl and/or homeopathic medicine. I was reluctant to sedate my dog with Benadryl as a solution. I believe there is no evidence that homeopathic medicine works in human or other animals, and as a case study it did not work with my dog. After a week they offered alternative homeopathic medicine.
