Found myself moving from CA back to NM on very short notice. I had been terminated from my employer and was residing in corporate housing and needed to leave within the week.
I had made arrangements initially with one broker and then cancelled because they couldn't meet my timeline and raised the price from the initial estimate. Went back online and was contacted by Steve on July 2 who said they could take care of me and have me picked up on July 5. He said that he would stay on the line while I reviewed the contract because we had to have it signed while the drivers were on the line so that they would be booked given the short time frame. He would not give me time to review the document. Of course, my review was very short -- shame on me. Was told I would be contacted the next day with a specific pick-up time for Friday (since they were only working in the office 1/2 day on Thursday) and to confirm what items needed to be moved. Was told there was no long haul charge, nor would there be an elevator charge. Was informed I would need to have plastic covers for the mattress and box spring, but that everything else was part of the deal (blankets, tape, etc.). The movers were supposed to help me and package the TV in the original box and place the covers on the mattress. Kept insisting the movers would disassemble everything and then reassemble at my destination. I said reassembly would not be needed, but they kept insisting that is what would occur. Said I didn't need because everything was going to go into my garage. Was told there could be a cost adjustment (more if I had additional items and less if I had fewer). The estimate said my items would be delivered within 2-14 days of pick-up. I was also told that additional insurance would be available when the movers showed up. Was informed I would need to be able to pay 1/2 of the remaining balance via money order or cash at the time of pick-up and the rest at the time of delivery.
Never got a phone call on Wednesday. I called the office on Thursday and was told I wasn't moving on Friday. Gabby was rather short with me. I was supposed to wait for a phone call on Friday. Email messages to Steve and Todd went unanswered as did phone calls to them. Didn't get a call on Friday so called and got the answering service. The actual mover responded fairly quickly and said I was scheduled for Sunday as they had just been informed of my preferred move dates and they had a 48-hour window. I said they weren't preferred dates -- they were hard dates as my lease was being terminated and I had to be out on Saturday. I found an email to my junk mail account that had me booked for Saturday between 8 and 11, but they did arrive between 2-5 pm.
Paid the deposit by credit card. Turns out I actually had fewer items than were listed on the estimate. As another reviewer learned, the "contract" was conveniently not available when the movers finally arrived. Insurance was not available (turns out I had to have pre-arranged with yet another party) so I was stuck with the $0.60/lb. The estimate was not reduced. Was charged a long haul fee. Was also charged $125 for the use of "saran" wrap. Turns out that this mover charges for the saran wrap at $25 per item. I had only been told about the two sofas. The "contract" I had signed was forgotten and as my things had already been loaded and lease terminated, I had to go along with the new contract. At least it was a binding contract. Had to also sign a waiver releasing them from liability for stains or damage to the mattress and box spring because I provided the covers. Luckily they accepted a personal check for the amount due (60% of the move -- deposit plus all moving costs) at pick-up because I didn't have the extra $1000 in cash. My goods were to be delivered within 30 days.
The only piece of furniture that was disassembled was my dining room table (four legs were removed). I had packaged the TV myself and took apart the bed. I also had covered the mattress and box spring. They did take the feet off of the sofa and loveseat and took the legs off the headboard. My bookcase wasn't even blanketed.
The driver at destination was surprised at the amount of damage for such a small move. The moving company arranged for two individuals who self-identified as being from the local shelter as day labor to unload my belongings. So much for professionals moving my stuff. I had to pay the remainder of the balance in cash or money order. I had to itemize the damage on the spot, but that has been difficult as I didn't have them reassemble anything. Lots of the hardware is now missing (and I am having trouble replacing because they have 120 days to settle the claim), furniture is scratched and damaged, the wicker patio chairs which were brand-new are ruined, and the list goes on.
Both companies are currently using names similar to companies with rather good reviews. read more
