Granted there has been no reviews in awhile, we thought we'd try this place out for seafood since they are a "fish market" so we figured the seafood would be fresh. Ordered the haddock dish & chips cuz that seemed like a food standard to act as a base. Also ordered the paella cuz who can resist a good paella? The fish and chips were super greasy. Ugh. There was a pool of grease and I had to use several napkins to soak up all the grease. The fish and chips were nothing special which would have been a 3 star but the grease factor dropped it to 2.5. The paella was good. The seafood fresh and hot. and the rice had an excellent flavor. The portion was a bit small so I'd give it a 3/5. Wait staff took our order, brought it, and then the check. I was pleasantly surprised by this little restaurant!! Initially, I was a little bit apprehensive as I had read that there was a fish smell coming from the market, but I can assure you there was no fish smell inside the restaurant. The restaurant itself had a really quaint but proper ambiance. The service was attentive and friendly. stopped by here on a recommendation from a friend to try "Tony's Soup" - it's a seafood mix with 4 or 5 different types of fish, shrimp, clams....you name it, it's in there. Great broth with some nice flavors. We ordered two large....basically a full bowl - very filling, each came with a nice homemade roll. The food was delicious, came out very quickly and the service was amazing, water was brought regularly without even having to ask. My only question, did they change their coleslaw? Verdict: Service was great, but the food was significantly overpriced. Tonight we wanted seafood so we headed here. We had a good cross section of food to try a few things, and the best way I can describe most of it was "meh". The shrimp caesar salad was bland and appears to have had shrimp that was purchased at a a grocery store dropped on top, while the clam chowder was incredibly salty. The live lobster was ok, but it is quite difficult to screw up steamed lobster. The worst part of all of this was that without purchasing any wobbly pops, the bill was still over $100!!! My family and I have been coming here for years but as of lately, something hasn't been right. We first ordered cod fish and chips and the fish pieces were tough and burnt. Again, it was a one off situation so we gave it another shot. Today, we ordered the cod fish and chips but this time the batter was raw and gooey. The fish was fresh, I'll give them that I paid a pretty penny as the order was for 8 people, and so I called to let them know about my dissatisfaction and the lady hung up on me. It is now dusted in a flour mixture, and I found the calimari very rubbery. The waitress pretty much ignored us, so I couldn't send the dish back. Don't let any of the Byward market seafood spots fool you, THIS is the best fish 'n chips in town and I'd even state the best west of the Maritimes. Cozy little location that never seems to feel too busy or too slow. The staff are friendly and always smiling but not in that insincere way that you see all to often in the service industry (not that I blame them though some customers can be the worst and incredibly entitled). Anyone who knows Ottawa knows Merivale Road is terrible for traffic anytime of day or night and usually find ways to avoid the area. On arrival the parking lot was full so kind of made a parking spot where there wasn't one.... As we arrived around 12:15 pm the place was full with a large lunch crowd I believe we got the last table.... One of the things I judge when going into a restaurant is the bathroom as I right or wrong believe you can tell how clean a place is by the bathroom. If it looks like it hasn't been cleaned in a month do you think they clean the kitchen??? So first test spotless.... The waitress came within minutes of sitting down and we were ready to order so placed an order for 2 Fish & Chips (haddock) $14 per including 2 pcs, fries and coleslaw. Now figuring due to the amount of people in restaurant we would be waiting but what a surprise within 10 minutes lunch was served. Please keep in mind we only had the Fish & Chips which in one word would describe as AWESOME. The batter was crispy non greasy it was amazing usually I find if crispy the batter has a greasy taste or drips with grease. The batter is fantastic very lite airy it isn't a heavy beer batter just great taste then the fish ooooooooohhhhhhhhhh so good..... The portion wasn't huge it was just right the tarter sauce had good flavour but I just tried it to say I did I prefer my Fish with just lemon which was served. The fries were very good as well again not a lot of them but very tasty. The only thing that I didn't finish was the coleslaw but I prefer a vinegar base to a mayo base. What a great little place, It was my first time visiting and it will not be the last. We went after seeing good reviews and craving fish and chips. It seems to be a big family that runs the whole strip mall, there is a Fish market and a Panini place as well that serves Gelato. When we arrived at 8pm the place was packed we waited for maybe 10-15 mins while listening to the regulars banter at the bar. The interior is small but it is cozy and not cramped. The walls have a beautiful mural of the sea side. We were sat and right away the service was spot on, the staff are very good and inviting. We ordered the calamari to share and within 5 minutes it was brought to the table, and the place was packed! It was a very generous portion with huge pieces of bouncy Calamari with a light crisp batter. It was perfectly cooked and not rubbery. It was a great start to dinner. We both opted to have the Haddock and chips which comes with two decent sized pieces and some nice golden fries and Coleslaw served in a cabbage leaf. I loved that because I hate when the cabbage makes my fries soggy. The Fish was the star of the meal as it should be, It was perfect. The batter melts in your mouth and the fish is left with a beautiful taste, you can really tell its fresh. The tartar sauce was fab too. All for only $14 its a steal. The fries could have a little more seasoning but they give you salt/pep and malt vinegar so I didnt mind :D We didn't get dessert but we will next time, the table beside us got the Cheesecake and it looked to die for! One piece could easily be shared between two. We also were going to get some gelato from Luigis beside them but it was closed at 9 unfortunately. The place had no music but it was warm and filled with happy banter. I loved the place and can't wait to go back and become a regular. Well after many years of going to this restaurant and after many enjoyable meals we ran into a server that has got to be the worst server I have ever had in 50 years of going out to eat. I had noticed that a couple of tables that had come in after us were being served before us and in one case they even had the time to eat pay the bill and leave before we were even served.I asked the server if they perhaps forgot us and she replied that the other tables had ordered fish and chips and it was easier to pre-pair than the scallops we had ordered and that they even had ordered a salad., now this made no sense to me so I said perhaps we should have ordered a salad, and with lip she said are you patronizing me? After that she didn't even ask if everything was OK as most servers ask in restaurants after the meal was served and she sent over another server with the bill at the end of the meal. Now I want to mention that I left a tip 50% lower than it should have been and 50% more than I should have left in other works I should have left nothing. I only hope you don't get this server. This is my favorite fish and chips eatery. Being from Nova Scotia I can only eat fresh fish and the fish at this fish market is the freshest I've found in Ottawa. The batter is light and tasty. The coleslaw added to the plate is 'homemade' tasting and reminds me of my grandmother's cooking. The staff is pleasant and prompt. While visiting family in Ottawa, we had a craving for seafood and so we set out to try this spot. One of the few well-reviewed seafood specialists outside the downtown core, this place has earned all of its 5 star reviews. The fact that it is easy to get to with free parking is just a bonus. Service was fantastic and even though the restaurant was packed, our meal was very well paced with apps, soup and main courses. The atmosphere was nice, and fit the bill of "family operated, family oriented". We had a fantastic meal and the prices are very reasonable. Calamari - amazing. I had a blackened salmon and shrimp combo that was amazing. The bouillabase my Dad had was STACKED with seafood at a steal at 15$. Clam chowder was extremely rich. Niece had no arguments with the grouper fish and chips either. My sister had the scallops - beautiful large scallops seared perfectly. I was so impressed last two times, that we went back to celebrate my birthday. But what a disappointment. I and two others ordered the scallops. We got five scallops supposedly 8 ounces, but I bet they were no more than 5-6 ounces at the most. Two of us chose them grilled. The scallops were a bit cold , and rubbery on the outside. Though ok in the middle but definitely not melt in your mouth! Tons of lukewarm veggies and hot potatoes. I sent my plate back and got really nice hot veggies this time with the same not so great sea scallops. My daughter's breaded scallops were much better. But everyone mentioned that their sides were also cold and the potatoes not quite up to par. However my Son-in-law's and the kids fish and chips were great as were the spring roll appetizers, full of crab meat! Oh yes, the bread rolls were nice and hot but once we cut into them, they were dry. Could they have been day old, or just reheated too many times? With two glasses of wine and a bottle of cider, two 'egg rolls' and a plate of mussels, no dessert, our meal for 5 adults and two kids came to about 190$. Plus tip. Not cheap!
