I especially loved the native plants at City Roots, and it's always nice to see the good people from Messner Bee Farm. There's live music (with room to dance!,) fresh produce, hot food, local artisans, and plenty of green space to stroll through. Parking isn't difficult- lots of street spots, especially if you go later in the evening after other local merchants have closed.

The Mission Farm and Flower Market officially opened at the beginning of June, and is a great…read moreaddition to the shops along Johnson Drive. After an 18 month-long intensive infrastructure project to bring major updates and beautification to Mission's main drag, this local farmer's market, located in a grassy byway along the Rock Creek Trail between Reeds Road and Maple Street, helps add to Mission's "hometown downtown" feel. For those who live in the area, it's easily accessible on foot via the streamway trail and/or Johnson Drive, and for those who drive in, parking is plentiful and easily accessible at city lots at Outlook and on Woodson Rd., which offer access to the trail. Local businesses ScriptPro, Shortstop BP, and Casey Bros. Sinclair along Johnson Drive also have arrangements with the city to allow parking, and there is a ton of angle parking on the street due to the recent upgrades. The market is new, but already has a good number of vendors setting up awnings on every Saturday, 7 a.m. - 1 p.m., through September. In addition to produce vendors, several local shops have kiosks, including Dips and Sips, with their massive cinnamon rolls, and Werner's with their sausages. Vendors also sell popcorn, baked goods, local honey, plants, flowers, cheeses, soaps and lotions, farm fresh eggs, meats, and jams and jellies, to name a few. The market is open air and spread out along a popular dog walking trail, so there is plenty of space for pets, a grassy expanse for kids to play, as well. There was live folk music this morning, and I ran into Mission's mayor and his wife, who noted that bench seating and canopies will be added as the project progresses. As a resident of Mission, one thing I appreciate is a sense of small-town community in an area that's metro-suburban, and projects like this really add to the neighborly, community feel. The first couple of Saturdays of the Market, rain has been an issue, but today's market was sunny and hot, and lots of people, vendor and customer alike, were out early. Lots of visiting with vendors, and just a really great, friendly community experience. I'll look forward to watching this neat new farmer's market grow, from the ground up.

Now, nessled on about 4 acres, they grow a variety of vegetables and flowers with no irrigation, using sustainable methods (live mulch (i.e., weeds) to shade the crops and renew the soil). They also use built environmental methods to extend the growing season of certain non-native plants, and have even applied for and received grants from the USDA (the North Central Region Sustainable Agriculture Research and Education program) to experiment growing ginger in the midwest (local ginger!!!) and to experiment growing bitter melon indoors. The Huns already have an incredible assortment of herbs and vegetables. On last count at the KC Farmer's Market, I saw 3 varieties of basil, 2 types of parsley, bitter melon, of which the leaves and stems you can make green tea (don't give the tea to children or people prone to low blood sugar blackouts), perslin (misspelled), and onions. At other times, there were flowers, heirloom tomatoes, zuchinni, potatoes, and green (and purple) beans. The best part is, everything is extremely cheap, bunches are mostly $1 each. Go there, say hi, and enjoy the stir fry. UPDATE: Last weekend, early August 2008, the Huns had an early batch of ginger--kansas grown ginger? you ask. Yep, it's for real. As far as I know, it's the only midwest-grown ginger being grown around.

I have discovered purple amaranth leaves, different colored beans and many varieties of squash from them. I also love their herbs - you get three times the amount that you can buy at the grocery store and for only $1. It doesn't have people selling things like 1 dollar sunglasses like the Overland Park farmers market. This farmers market is what every farmers market should be. The type of place where the farmers are actually farmers. The type of place where the farmers will remember who you are and what you like. The type of farmers market where the farmer will bring you green tomatoes for the next week just because you want to fry some. It is also home to some of the most delicious tomatoes you will ever have in your life. I'm being serious here. There's this guy. He sells them out of the back of his truck. They are the ugliest tomatoes ever, but they are so good. I love this man and his tomatoes. I can't wait until it is July. If you want fancy stalls and pastas and breads and pies, then there's another farmers market close by that is probably better for you. I mean, the Shawnee Farmers Market does have some of this stuff, but for the most part it is just produce. I love it, and you should too.

This is one of my favorite Farmers Markets, and I am sad that this Wendsday will be the last of the…read moreseason. The market runs every Wendsday from 5-8 from May to the beginning of October. Unfortunately this summer I was only able to go twice, but it was great. Local sustainably grown veggies, meats and other local treats. Sometimes there is live music or other activities--both times this year there was no music, but I know last year they had several local bands playing. I always buy a few fresh veggies and try to support several different booths. It is kind of cheesy, but leaving the farmers market always makes me feel closer to my community. It is so important to support local growers and also healthier to know my favorite sweet corn is not full of icky pesticides! Try to make it this October 8th, but if not look for the Organic Community market next spring.

There was a acai bowl food truck there... hopefully they'll have more stuff next week. The vendors there were awesome. I just wish there were more. Maybe fresh honey? And more plants that you can plant!
