My wife is a nurse and we had looked at other places but she was not comfortable with leaving me at them. After meeting with the Brookside medical director she said this was the place. All during my stay everyone was making me feel at home. Would recommend Brookside to anyone looking for a place for a parent or themselves.

The adult family home owner, a nurse, said she visited the home daily but she clearly did not visit the residents or she would have seen these changes. She often did not respond to my calls or texts without my trying several times. And finally and most upsetting, she lied to DSHS. She was supposed to create a plan of care for my spouse and I was to sign it. When DSHS asked about this, she created a boiler plate plan and told the State I refused to sign it, which is a bold faced lie. I never saw a plan and she put words into my mouth to save reprimand. If your loved one needs very basic care, the place is probably okay, but just know that communication will be problematic and that the owner is deceitful.

The first point of contact was Joan in Marketing; she was and remains compassionate, honest and has provided many resources for me and my family. She knew from day one that we would not be able to afford permanent residence, and she has assisted with everything from referrals to an elder law firm to placement agencies, as well as providing support and encouragement. My mom's stay at Aegis ended after Thanksgiving, and Joan has still been in contact with me to follow up on my mom's care. The staff: I really doubt there's a better staff anywhere. From the team at the concierge desk (Isumi, Bob, Paul, Ailie), to dining (Sarah, Jenn, Linda,...) to the wonderful care team (Democracy!! Tierra, Monique, Sharon, Kristen, Spencer, Anna, Cole, Alex,.... the list is endless!) and the life enrichment team (Susan! Vince!) and the security team, who I saw daily at 6 am. My mom was in such good hands, and it was plain to see that everyone was truly compassionate, that this was not just a job, but they really care and are compensated well for their hard work. The building is gorgeous, but this is mainly for the families to enjoy. The residents of course love being in such a beautiful home with all these amazing features (the theater! the belfry!), but what really counts is the care. After touring several other assisted living facilities, it was quite plain to see the difference. The Aegis staff truly cares. Yes, they're running a business, but they do not have itchy fingers and dollar signs in their eyes when meeting with you to discuss potential care costs, unlike several other well known assisted living facilities that I won't name. The cost is unfortunate as this really is unattainable for most, but I would strongly recommend this facility to anyone looking for the best place for a family member needing care.

My mother never consistently got the care we were promised (e.g., got one shower per month vs. 3 per week in the plan, almost never wearing her compression socks vs. paying to have these on each day). As well, as someone with dementia, she mostly sat alone in her room. During the sales process we were told how skilled the staff were engaging with dementia residents. We didn't see that after moving in, so would complain, we'd see temporary improvement, but always short lived. Staff turnover is high. There were many really great people that provided good care, but were quickly gone. Ultimately we moved her to an adult family home which was light years better and a fraction of the cost.

The residence is very clean and the dining room offers excellent cuisine with daily specials. Everyday there are activities, exercise sessions, and programs designed to get my mom out of her room and involve herself with the other residents. Entertainers are regularly invited to perform on the grand piano in lobby and there'll even be a concert there in a few weeks for New Year's Eve. Although there are still times that my mom has the blues, our family can rest assured that she is has a group of new friends, gets three delicious hot meals a day, receives all her required medication in a timely manner, and most importantly, - she is safe and sound. I suggest from the rlectric vehicle stations to go down the stairs to the courtyard, in the door at the corner, turn left and follow the hallway all the way to the end, the restaurant entry is around the corner to the left. (The first irritating thing being the monthly rent was raised by a couple hundred dollars a few months after he moved in and that upcoming rate change was not revealed to him when he signed the papers.) They have a vulnerable population that in many cases is getting substandard amenities. I'm not talking about actual physical care. I don't have experience with that side of it. Everything is clean, frequent varied activities for residents, etc. Here are some things I don't like: 1. The internet in my dad's room is terrible. It's slow as molasses. There have been occasions where the internet is flat out not working and it doesn't seem to be a priority to get it working again (although my dad noted on one of those occasions that the internet in the office area still worked.) My dad is too old to realize this is not acceptable. Even if all he was planning on doing was playing online solitaire. I would urge anyone moving in who likes the internet to fully investigate this in the room they are planning to move into. 2. My dad expresses concerns about the high rate of turnover in the kitchen/dining room staff. He reports that this causes inconsistency in quality of food. 3. Also, new faces all the time means the residents can't build relationships with staff, which is a missed opportunity to make the place more special. 4.The high turnover raises the question about how good the work environment is. I assume it pays not much more than minimum wage. I overheard a slightly racist interaction between a resident and one of the staff recently which makes me wonder if sensitivity training needs to be offered to the residents, OR the staff's rights to be treated well by both management and residents is not being stood up for. Maybe this is just me resorting to stereotyping about the older generation that they might demonstrate racist values when interacting with people of color serving them. This is pure speculation--all I know is the turnover is high and whatever the root cause is should be addressed. Pluses are great location and the lobby is spacious and comfortable.

Their (the staff) hearts seem to be in the right place [they sort of care], but they do not get enough training. The cooks run the show, and they seem to be very temperamental and inconsistent. The serving staff seems to be dominated by the moods of the cooks. If the cooks are being temperamental, that experience is transferred out to the food service presenters who then pass it on to the customers, patrons, and residents. Generally it seems be best to avoid having anything to do with the dining room, unless one chooses to be aggravated and frustrated. There seems to be communication issues - lack of communication, and how information is communicated.

My Aunt has been at Aegis Living Greenwood for three years. The experience has not been positive…read more The major problem is that Aegis is a for profit enterprise run by an owner who wants to maximize his profits. This is done at the expense of senior residents and their families who feel trapped. When our aunt entered the facility her monthly invoice was about $8,000. Due to inflation and a "care point" system imposed by Aegis, her current invoice is now over $14,000 per month. Yes, there has been a gradual decline in my aunt's physical and mental abilities, but nothing so acute as to warrant a 75% increase in the cost of her care within three years. Rather, it feels like Aegis has devised a way to legally extort ever greater sums out of its vulnerable senior residents and their families. Within the fine print of the contract she signed there is a "care points" system which is supposed to relate to additional services that may be provided. Aegis has the UNILATERAL power to impose these services and charges on the resident. Just this past month, Aegis Greenwood said it installed a new software to calculate care points, and by virtue of this new system even more points were added DESPITE no additional services being provided. Additionally, the Aegis assessments are incredibly vague in describing which specific services are being provided to justify the additional points being charged. When one contacts Aegis for an explanation of the charges, they deflect giving an answer and instead request a face to face meeting, so that they can have the element of surprise and create intimidation by bringing in several employees. They refuse to put anything in writing. I feel that Aegis has entrapped and is financially abusing my aunt and likely many other vulnerable seniors for whom changes, like moving their residence, is a very difficult matter. One report filed with the State says, "He did not recall signing anything recently regarding an increase in care points. He was paying 10-11K per month when his mother moved into assisted living and now pays between $18-19K per month [three years later]." Sounds familiar. Even with all of this going on, it is unlikely I will move my aunt as she has settled into the place and moving her would be a true hardship on her at this stage of her life. I am managing her finances so only I have to deal with the disgusting behavior of Aegis management.
