He petitioned Mayor Jack Saunders and the City Commission for a regulation size, lighted little league baseball field because Delray Beach was the only city at the time between Vero Beach and Key West that didn't have one. Taking his request under consideration, the mayor and commission appointed Bob to be the chairman of a committee to research and start the process of building the field. Committee member Ken Ellingsworth helped the city apply for the Bicentennial Grant for $250,000, the largest grant ever given in the State of Florida. With the grant they were able to purchase the property near the transfer station off SW 4th Ave. The county helped build the park and a field called "Little Fenway", a replica of Fenway Park and it's "Green Monster", the left field wall in Fenway in Boston, Massachusetts. The committee voted to name the new park after the man who started it all, Robert P. Miller. Bob wasn't done yet though. One field wasn't enough for all of the kids to play baseball in Delray Beach. He went back to the city commission and mayor and got them to add more fields to the park. The last field added to the park was Sergio Field, named after another longtime city resident and employee Fred Sergio. Bucky Dent's Baseball School, now the Elev 8 Sports Institute moved into the south end of the park and helps maintain the fields. Today Robert P. Miller Park has been renovated and reconfigured to include three new little league fields, one major league field, two-story concession stand/press box building, Miracle League Field and concession stand building, four batting cages, major league practice infield, 3-bay storage building, new pavilion and pitching and hitting wall area. The original playground was relocated; additional parking was added, and the fencing and play surface on Little Fenway at the North end of the park was replaced. Until accidentally stumbling upon this park I had no idea this kids baseball dream existed next to the railroad tracks. What a wonderful resource for the baseball lovers of Delray Beach and all thanks to Bob Miller who wanted to make a place for the Little Leagues to play in the city he loved.

Currie Commons Park is in the Osceola neighborhood on the south side Delray Beach in close…read moreproximity to downtown. The neighborhood has gotten a lot of improvements recently including upgraded streets, sidewalks, and alleys along with improvements to this park. Currie Commons Park was named in honor of George Graham Currie. There is a another park named for him in West Palm Beach. Currie was a native of Quebec. When he arrived in Florida he was penniless but he became a lawyer, made money, and then lost it all in real estate. He served as mayor of West Palm Beach from 1901 to 1902. He wrote 18 books of poems, essays, and music lyrics before passing away in 1926 shortly after this park was dedicated. One of the best features of Currie Commons Park is the recently replaced playground. The thirty three year old wood structure playground was compromised by years of use and weathering. It also had termite damage. Restoring it was not an option so it was disassembled. Funded by the Community Redevelopment Agency, a new multilevel playground was built and it is the first of its kind in South Florida. The four story playground has a giant twisting rainbow slide along with secret hidden instruments and butterfly surprises. During my visit you could tell how much the children were enjoying it. Other park amenities include a lighted little league field, multi-purpose field, press box, concessions, and restrooms. Whether you are coming for sports or play, the Currie Commons Park is a great recreational resource for those living in and visiting the Osceola neighborhood of Delray Beach.

They have multiple baseball fields, a little exercise spot with some machines, a nice playground for kids, and the best is the covered open field with artificial grass. Great for the rainy days where you want to get a workout in outside or on the extremely hot days where you want to avoid the sun. Bathrooms and cold water fountains are in 2 spots. Definitely worth checking out if you have kids and want to let them just run around! I saw a vending machine as well that takes cards and cash.

You can see different kinds of animals such as ducks, squirrels, parrots (a lot of them), owls, and iguanas. Today, I even saw a softshell turtle, which was very special. It shows that the park is well cared for and supports nature. The park is very clean overall. However, one problem is not the park itself, but some visitors. I often see people leave trash like water bottles, snack bags, and other garbage, especially on weekends during events or soccer games. This is disappointing because there are many trash bins available in the park. Overall, it is a beautiful and well-maintained park, but visitors should help keep it clean.

The Wimberly Athletic Complex is a park in the industrial warehouse section of Oakland Park. It was…read morenamed in honor of Harry L. Wimberly, one of the most beloved and dedicated public servants to the City of Oakland Park. His grandparents moved to area in the 1920's where they made their living as vegetable farmers. Harry began his career in Oakland Park by mowing lawns for the City. For the next 40 years he worked in various positions where he led a team of City employees responsible for streets and building maintenance, parks and roads, solid waste, water, stormwater, wastewater, and garage operations. Harry was known as being willing to do any job needed. He became the City's Recreation Director when the parks and recreation departments were combined and retired as the Director of Public Works in 1996. Harry is perhaps most well known for for helping organize the City's first Youth Day celebration in 1957. Youth Day continues to live on with Broward County's longest-running parade and it is still held every year at the park. Today the City of Oakland Park's youth enjoys all that Harry Wimberly put into the city at the Wimberly Athletic Complex. Park amenities include a baseball/softball diamond, concession stand, football field, and hockey rink. Just south of Wimberly Park is the brand New City Park which opened in 2022 and has lighted basketball court, pickleball courts, a woodland themed playground with shade cover, splash pad, and restrooms. Harry Wimberly loved the children of Oakland Park and he was devoted to making it the best city it could be. It is fitting that such an important gathering place and recreational resource in the community carries his name.

The Baseball portion is the longest running youth baseball program in the county. It's been operating since 1952. They provide recreational ball experiences for children of ages ranging from 3 through 16. They offer baseball and softball. The facilities here include two full-sized baseball diamonds, a snack bar, and plenty of parking.

The main entrance is right off Dixie, so it's easy to find. There was plenty of free parking, very close to all the fields and event spaces. A great place to walk dogs, enjoy a stroll or just play some ball.

Some of the areas are geared towards the blind and deaf. Parking is free and there is plenty of it at the entrance to the PBS Studios. There is plenty of shade trees to make this park enjoyable all year long as well as areas to picnic.
