They really create a community for the families, and have many special traditions and events throughout the year. They also offer a great summer camp program that is very well run and convenient. The leadership team is excellent to work with and they run a tight ship. I wish we could stay there forever! But they have given our kids an excellent social and academic foundation for their elementary years.

They cook their meals in house and are always accommodating if I ever had schedule changes and my daughter had grown and learned so much in her 3 years there. It's just that our friend (I'm talking about Vicky now) has two master's degrees in education and is also teaching early childhood education at U Mass Boston. Vicky's son also attends the school with the other kids and he's really sweet and hilarious. Our daughter loves him. The other teacher at the school, Laura, lives a couple of doors down the street and she has her own children who attended the school. Unfortunately they have since aged out. She has a degree in clinical psych and experience working with children and teenagers. Laura is extremely warm and loving. To me, Laura is more focused on emotional development and she strikes me as being very intuitive. Vicky is more academic and theoretical. She ensures that the curriculum is meeting the kids' and the parents' needs. I think that they make a very balanced and complimentary team. Vicky's husband is a musician and he comes to teach music sometimes and fills in if they need extra help. The school is in Vicky's house which they have modified to meet the needs of a six-toddler/pre-schooler school. There is a great enclosed backyard with toys, a sandbox, a little house with a slide and lots of small trees around the perimeter. The families that attend the school helped to plant those trees at a wonderful brunch last Spring. One of the things that I like the most about the school is that they use recycled materials to make collages and their own toys. Plastic bottles filled with puff balls, glitter and colored water make great kaleidoscopes. They can do more with a plastic tube than you can possibly imagine! I like that the value of re-use are part of the learning experience. "What ELSE can we use this for?" So...the Spanish thing. I am not a Spanish speaker. My wife is a native speaker and our daughter really is completely bilingual. She is almost 3 and she can talk your ears clean off in English or Spanish. She has been going to Playhood for around 18 months. I am completely jealous of how easily she has learned both languages because I have struggled for YEARS with Spanish. The only way to teach a kid a language is to immerse them in it. (I think of it as Spanish Submersion...glub....glub...glub). I have actually learned more Spanish since my daughter started talking than I have in years of study and linguistic abuse at the hands of my in-laws. Fortunately, both Vicky and Laura speak English as well, so I never have any problem communicating, getting reports or figuring out what is going on. Right now there are kids that mostly speak Spanish at home, mostly speak English at home, speak Spanish and Italian at home, and our house which is all Spanish for my wife and all English for me. We have gotten to meet all of the other parents at brunches at Casa Vicky or during drop offs and pickups. I feel like my daughter is completely safe and completely stimulated when she is at Casa Vicky. We were very lucky to have found them!

Because it is a small group of children with two teachers, they get a ton of individualized attention. The teachers send home a report with photos every day and touch base about any developmental issues. They helped us potty train, too! Our daughter is happy, growing, and learning Curriculum: The curriculum is structured but leaves plenty of room for the children to explore things they are interested in. The teachers modify their lesson plans when a child shows a specific interest in something. They do some form of art and/or music every day, they have free/guided play time every day. They often have sensory play or participate in preparing lunch. Space: It is in the home of one of the teachers. It is always very clean and perfectly set up for this age. There is a reading and greeting area upstairs, a playroom downstairs, space for sensory play, art and lunch near the kitchen upstairs, and a beautiful yard with plenty of things to explore. Food: Playhood provides a nutritious lunch and the kids love it. (Don't ask me how they do this, but the kids eat all their veggies!) Spanish immersion: If a child is coming in without knowing Spanish, they will help him or her out in English until the child can feel comfortable. For children with a base knowledge, you will see their Spanish blossom because they are getting it both from their teachers and from their peers. Philosophy: Most important to us was to find a place that was welcoming, kind and gentle, loving, responsible, creative, and stimulating for our child. We got lucky with Playhood! Cost: Very reasonable, especially when you consider the quality of education, the included lunch, and the comparison to other places in the area. I immediately paid the required deposit on August 18. After submitting payment, I received no confirmation or acknowledgment -- not even an automated receipt -- which was concerning given that the payment form collected card details directly. From August 18 to November 1, I reached out multiple times seeking updates. I called the school twice and was advised both times to follow up by email. I sent three separate emails during that period and received no response. In those messages, I asked for confirmation of my deposit, a tour of the facility (as I had not yet seen the space), and an invoice for my records. The invoice was particularly important because I work in research and needed proper documentation to submit for my employer's childcare credit reimbursement. When I initially asked about scheduling a tour, I was told the floors were being waxed and that someone would follow up once tours resumed. However, no one ever reached back out. By November 1 -- just a month before returning to work -- and still with no communication, I sent a polite but direct email asking about the status of my child's enrollment and inquiring about the refund policy, since the contract stated deposits were nonrefundable. The reply I finally received was short and stated that the refund would be processed, citing personal circumstances as the reason for the lack of communication. While I empathize with anyone facing family health challenges, it's concerning that there appeared to be no administrative backup or system in place to maintain communication with parents -- particularly when planning infant care around a return-to-work schedule. As a solo parent who paid a significant deposit in good faith, this experience left me disappointed. Reliability, clear communication, and professionalism are essential when it comes to infant care, especially for working parents. I'm sharing this so future parents can use their time wisely and avoid being put in a position of having to scramble to find childcare just weeks before returning to work -- especially when you've done your part by being proactive and organized in securing a spot for your child.

my son went to the Northeastern Montessori school in revere MA for 3 years and I couldnt have been…read morehappier. i had initially taken him to another very known private school in the area and he cried every single day. we changed him to NEM and he stopped crying within 4 days. classes are small and the teachers are seasoned/experienced educators. there was not a day i felt uncomfortable leaving my little one there. my son loved all his teachers, specially Ms Kathy and Ms Totto. he walked in there every day like he owned the place. He would come home talking about things like Martin Luther King, Animals, continents, celebrations around the world etc, when he was in preschool which i thought it was awesome because you could tell they were not only playing but also learning. this is not something they do in all preschools As some of them just limit the children to playing. my son stills talks about going back. i was able to bond with other moms that I still see once in a while for birthdays and we all miss the school and the teachers. Another positive Is that they take very seriously keeping the students and teacher healthy. The school owner does not play around when it comes to mitigating any virus outbreaks. she is very strict with this policy which I liked. My only complain is the admin part of the school. I dont think they have a person dedicated to it 100% of the time so its a little bit of a challenge When you need something. you just have to insist and it will get done but you have to be on top of it. if you are considering this school, def give them a chance. its a small school that takes pride on caring and educating children, which at the end of the day its what matters.

I don't doubt that some parents experience good things from Artisan. From what I hear their infant…read morecare is excellent and we loved the addition of music in the curriculum. But in speaking to other parents of kids my daughter's age, they were/are having similar issues with staff and management that we had before we left. I would recommend against transferring into Artisan at least after toddler stages. We immediately looked to Artisan for a preschool program because we had toured there when she was an infant and loved the presentation from that time. My daughter began her experience with daycare at a small in-home facility in Burlington and did very well there, but eventually grew out of that format and needed more structure with children her age. We didn't look anywhere else, and were excited to move her into a preschool classroom shortly after turning three last year (May 2018). Over the summer, we were presented with mixed reports of behavior issues (completely uncharacteristic of what we had seen to that point) and other reports of her doing well. We were not sure what the problem would be other than maybe a transitional issue. After a teacher change in the fall, we discussed the plan created with the previous teachers over the summer at the outset with the new staff. We began to notice however that they didn't seem to be following it. We again kept getting mixed reports from different teachers as to her progress. To be honest, her teachers' quality seemed to go down with the new staff. Also new was Director Julie, who eventually presented us with an ultimatum in November 2018 that we enroll her in public funded special needs evaluations or be removed from Artisan because they had no answers. This pressure was confusing and didn't sit well with us and we found their expertise to be lacking, so we didn't trust their insistence on there being a special need issue. I come from a family full of educators at all levels and their inability to creatively find and enact a plan didn't seem right with anyone. We pulled her from Artisan before Christmas 2018 and found a spot for her at Primrose in Burlington for even more money that Artisan was charging, but the cost difference was well worth it. Any behavioral issues were quickly dealt with and now, at 4.5 years old in a pre-k program she is excelling in all areas and working on first grade material. We're given glowing praise from her new teacher frequently. We purposely waited to see how she fared at her new school before posting any reviews, but her success only further shows me Artisan staff did not have the training or creative capacity to solve what amounted to be a simple problem. My wife and I experienced a lot of stress over her inconsistent care and Julie's ultimatum. Now we sleep very well knowing our daughter is in good hands at Primrose.
