Like nearby Mackie Mayor and Altrincham Market, it's an old building which has been beautifully restored. If you've visited either of those sites then you know what to expect - a variety of food and drink vendors around the sides and seating in the middle. Grab a table, note the number and then go order your food. You pay when you order and then someone will bring the food to your table when it's ready. There's a great variety of foods here - pizza, pasta, Indian and Thai when we went - and we had an absolutely amazing Indian themed fried chicken burger topped with an onion bhaji. Absolutely delicious. There's beer and wine available too, plus a tea and coffee stand. I have it on good authority though that some of the beers here are pricier than you'd find in other nearby bars. But that's a minor grumble. For the setting, the food and the atmosphere, the Produce Hall is definitely worth a visit.

Istanbul Palace opened its doors a mere 8 months ago but has already started creating a buzz…read moreamongst local foodies. A Turkish restaurant with Iranian owners might seem a strange mix at first but the unique Persian themed establishment turned out to be a perfect scenario for a Eastern cuisine aficionado like me when I visited recently. The restaurant is surprisingly big with 75 covers and decor is nothing short of stunning. The walls adorn Persian art and each diner also gets to dine with their own unique table cover art. The food isn't bad either. Having chosen a weekday for my latest foodie adventure I wasn't expecting it to be overly busy and it wasn't. This meant I could have a proper gander, take plenty of pics and chat to the manager. It turned out to be a great choice resulting in a fantastic first impression which concluded with me letting the chef pick my two mains (Which at £12.95 I thought was decent value given the quality of the food) So, what was the food like? Well, I started with the 'Olivieh' which was a mild yet utterly delicious side to go with the Lamb sizzler main. At first it looked like a yogurt based chutney type concoction that usually goes with the lamb, but upon investigation turned out to be something much better. Made with shredded chicken, potatoes, egg and mixed with some mayonnaise the recipe seemed so simple yet laced with genius (According to my taste buds anyway) I'm definitely making the stuff at home and cheat claiming it as my own at my next shindig. The lamb sizzler was the main attraction however and boy was it box office. Cooked in some special sweet (Chinese style sauce) the meat was tender but had a barbecue like taste and the vegetables that were cooked and served with it were divine. The accompanying rice and salad complemented its taste perfectly and though I forget the name of the two sauces served on the side (I MUST have them again) they were sensational. The incredible, belly busting night was rounded off with a special home made ice cream. I'd never tasted anything like it. It was the culinary equivalent of some kind of weird yet wonderful foodie dream. It completely confused the hell out of my foodie senses. It looked like ice cream but tasted like.... hmmm how shall I put this.... a cross between Turkish delight, frozen yoghurt and ice cream. Daaaamn it was good though. The only downside was I was too full to finish it, doh! (The lamb sizzlerwas a sizable main and had wiped me out) The only slight downside to this place is its location in the heart of Stockport. Let's face it, it's not like everyone from Greater Manchester flocks here for a night out/dining out experiance when Friday comes knocking. But perhaps, just perhaps... Istanbul Palace can change that (They have a belly dancing entertainment night, which looks ace and I might check out) It certainly has changed my mindset about coming to these neck of the woods. It's a smashing little foodie hidden gem which is guaranteed to be not as busy and rowdy as most of the city centre haunts if you're looking to get away from the kitchen and dine out. Despite a bit of a parking nightmare on the road, it gets much better after office hours (After 6pm parking is free) when it's quietened down. With it being only 10 minutes walk away from Stockport train station (which in turn is around 10 minutes away from Piccadilly) it's not that difficult/time consuming to get to from the city centre. The bus routes are also quite good with the restaurant being 5 minutes walk from the central station. In fact I like the place so much I might register a yelp event for those interested in checking the place out with me when I return. So watch this space, or if you're not a space watcher check it out your yelpity yelp self!

Came here for my birthday and really enjoyed it. The restaurant is at the top of Rostron Brow,…read moreopposite the church and up some stairs (I assume wheelchair access here may be an issue as toilets also up stairs so you may need to check first). To start we had some hot gin with rosemary (hot gin! so great!) some kind of delicious chargrilled cabbage leaf (finished on the woodburner next to the nice sofas you chill out on initially) topped with a really good scallop and apple mix. The vibe is basic romantic industrial with eclectic music and an open plan kitchen so you can watch the chefs at work (very quietly). Also quiet are the announcements of each dish - would be great if they could provide a crib sheet for the hearing challenged among us! I think broadly the dishes we had next were: Trout tartare - I really liked this Beetroot, hazelnut, sprouts - I felt this could have done with something sharp to contrast the more rounded flavours of the beetroot/hazelnuts although as ate more realised the sprouts were kind of doing this job, at least in texture Plaice, cod roe - same as above re maybe needing a lift but I still liked it Sourdough bread Broth Wild mallard - this was my fave, I thought it was fantastic although bf not so keen and preferred the plaice - each to their own! Blood orange and tarragon granita - bf went mental for this Quince and custard - bf v excited to discover quince is a real thing outside White Men Can't Jump Meanwhile the wine pairings also went well - I think they need to give you a heads up on when 1 wine is matched with two courses so you can pace yourself (although you do get a top up). We went nuts for the smoky white Italian wine we started with and also found the cloudy Austrian white interesting although might not go for that again. The red and sweet dessert wine were also excellent. There were some negative comments on tripadvisor which I think have been addressed/I disagree with because: - [Re not being much wine poured out] - There was lots of wine, I thought the glasses were actually pretty full for a wine flight (more than L'Enclume, for example) - [Re people leaving hungry] - Portion sizes were more than ample - we were feeling full before we even got to the duck and I am incredibly greedy as anyone will tell you. Really good because you got more than just a taste of each depth and could really appreciate all the flavours in multiple bites. Perhaps this has been changed following feedback? - [Re being cold] - I think the woodburner has fixed this, I was wearing short sleeves in February There were also some slight quibbles that I think are fair but would require only the most minor correction - The chairs are not that comfortable - cushions would be good - Bread came with only 1 pat of butter - as both are delicious, 2 would be good! Overall would really recommend this for a special occasion and especially if you want something fancy but not super traditional. Too bad I cannot justify going back immediately owing to price tag but I would come here regularly if I could afford it.

Could I really give this place less than 5 stars? I think I have to. It doesn't necessarily deserve…read morea less than perfect review given its competition, but this place isn't trying to compete, it's trying to redefine. Where the Light Gets In is far and away the best restaurant in Stockport, probably in Greater Manchester, and certainly one of the best within the North West. But I feel like it could be the best and isn't quite there, hence the 4 stars rather than 5. This place has a lot of hype to live up to right now, which makes things difficult for anyone. Head chef/owner Sam seems to take it all in his stride with a totally zen kitchen open to the dining room. There's no shouting, no sense of stress, everyone is in the zone doing their thing, although perhaps things are a little too zen (more on that later). The place is pitched as a menu free experience which is right up my street. I hate making decisions so just bring me one of everything. It was (in my opinion) slow out of the blocks though with the first 3 courses leaving me a little underwhelmed. 'Flavour your own crisps', radish with nettle puree and a crab and mushroom taco all had good intentions but lacked much of a flavour punch. Thankfully things picked up pretty quickly from there with some amazing dishes including smoked trout, a pork broth, and a cod and zest carrot combo to die for. The main pork loin was literally unbelievable and whilst the deserts lacked a little creativity, they were certainly good enough. What disappointed for me was the ambience. Seeing how in control the kitchen was when we entered was impressive, but as the meal progressed that confidence started to feel like a little like nonchalance. The servers energy seemed to fade half way through service, the kitchen (which is put centre stage as if a theatre production) went from 6 busy chefs to 1 by the end of our meal, and the announcing of the dishes felt a little like the chefs would rather be back in front of the hob than talking to guests. The other minor niggle for me came half way through the meal. We had opted for the tasting menu with wine flight assuming everything would be included for that price. It was a little unexpected then when offered a cheese board supplement. If you have it, we want to try it, but why not include this in the menu?? Not only was the cheese extra, but we were then asked if we wanted a drink to go with it. Given I'd ordered a wine flight to complement the meal, of course I want a drink. But what are the options? Will it cost me more? If I say no are there any more drinks coming or is that my night over? Like I said above I feel like everything should be included when paying for a tasting menu, but if there are upsells then at least make it clear what the options are. These are minor complaints in an otherwise exceptional experience though. If you're looking for the best of the best then Sam still has some creases to iron out, but for the North West he's made a bold statement that's highly worthy of the praise it's received.

Added to this now is Little Lanka, which I believe is the only Sri Lankan restaurant in Manchester (there seems to be one in Glossop). Added to our long-existing outstanding pubs, Stockport is really doing well! The same can't be said for this location, which has had two restaurants (Nepalese and vegetarian Indian) close since 2015. It's a a bit of a trek from Stockport station and parking is hit and miss - street parking is limited although we got a spot literally outside the front door, not metered, on a Saturday night. The 192 takes contactless now, so the bus is also an option! Consistently with reviews on tripadvisor, we got a lovely welcome here. The menu is full of unfamiliar dishes and it's not easy to get an explanation, but luckily google has plenty of handy images and explanations! We started with the parippu vadai and spicy fish cutlets. The parippu vadai is like a fritter (which isn't obvious from the menu). The cutlets are actually more like breaded balls. I thought they were super tasty although bf preferred the fritters (we got 3 of each so this worked out well for the 3rd!). Both came with the same two dips - emly (tamarind) chutney and red chutney - which were outstanding. For a main course I got the fish hoppers. You get a bowl of fish curry, a bowl of coconot sambol and then two piles of noodles that seem to come in discs. I didn't have enough curry for the noodles but couldn't have eaten all the noodles anyway, it was a very substantial portion. The curry tasted great but by the end I was a bit sick of disposing of fish bones, I would suggest a meat version if you're not feeling energetic. Meanwhile bf absolutely loved his lamb koththu - this is also complete (i.e. carbs included) dish because it involves strips of roti mixed in with the meat, egg and sauce. This may be why you're advised to order a small portion of curry on the side, to make sure your meal is not too dry, but bf said he would have been fine without. On the table next to us, the couple said the king prawn devil dish was amazing so I will try that next time. Bf got some King beer which he said might actually make him like lager. For dessert we had a caramel sweet which was interesting but I'm not mega keen on any of the Indian sub-continental desserts I've tried - don't love the spice factor. They do have natural yoghurt with honey and ice cream as well though, and will be further expanding the menu. I'd recommend a trip out to Stockport to try this place: it's good value, different from what you'd get elsewhere and overall we were really happy with the taste and lovely presentation of all our dishes.

A couple of large tables upfront so we opted for the back room, just a couple of tables. There are several tables open so we grabbed us a table.. This is old school, original Korean barbecue. You cannot get much better than this and just buy the decor. , the cleanliness, the authenticity of the staff I knew we were in the right place. We got seated, grabbed us an Asian beer, and looked at the menu. The chef/ owner came by as we were looking at the menu and actually steered us in the right direction. We chose several items so chose the So-galbi seasoned beef , muchim- lettuce and salad, yukgaejang soup, then some kimchi cabbage I just had to try. First the beef came out and they put it on the charcoal grill and began cooking. It was already seasoned, but dipped it in the sauce and wrapped it in lettuce and added some salad and it was fabulous.!!! Absolutely wonderful!! I got a rice and kimchi bowl I believe and I can't remember what it's called as we let the chef kind of bring us what she recommended and let her guide the table.. My colleague had the soup and it was just exactly what she was looking for!! Large bowl of beef with vegetables and noodles in a stainless steel bowl served hot, the perfect dish to go with the lettuce wraps we made. So as we ate through the beef cooked at the table, with lettuce, added salad, all the flavors merged together for a perfect blend of Korean barbecue that told me we were eating the real deal bbq. It's hard to be specific but with several beers, and about an hour taking our time enjoying every bite, after seven days already in Stockport this was the best meal both of us have had all week. We have two more weeks to go and expect we will come back here again, but all I can say is what a hidden gem of a place with a great atmosphere, great service, and priced moderately. We ordered: Bulgogi: £14.50 Dawaeji-galbi: £12.50 This is already quite expensive for BBQ but then we had to pay an additional £4.50 each for the lettuce! Kimchi is also charged at £4.50. Instead of plain rice we ordered a dolsot bibimbap which obviously worked out more expensive but again £12.50 felt like a lot I don't think this is just inflation, because at Seoul Kimchi the bbq and bibimbap dishes are each about £4 cheaper and I would be surprised if you're paying for lettuce. Soju is £14.50 a bottle, beer is £4.50, tea was £3.80. The meal for two came to over £90. I never normally focus so much on price for a meal and frankly I'm normally not that bothered but for the location I cannot understand why it is so expensive. I actually prefer someone to be involved in cooking my BBQ so I don't mess it up but I can see how another reviewer ended up with burnt meat, ours was also cooked a lot but still very tasty.
