Parents brought their large breed puppy in to see Dr. Kellar for updated vaccines. The "doctor" in her own words stated that the puppy was too wiggly and said that my parents needed to better train their animals. Not violent, threatening, frightened, but too happy and wiggly. She became frustrated with his excitement and stabbed the dog with his vaccines SO hard he became covered in blood. She then stated that she was going to sedate him to examine his ears. When we denied sedation due to the risk of death she hauled him in back where my father couldnt see but the dog emitted blood curdling screams and made my dad sign a waiver stating that any permanent damage to his eardrums was not the fault of the hospital but due to the dog being too wiggly and not being put under anesthesia. Avoid Dr. Kellar at all costs, have heard from several other pet owners that they refused to have their animals see her themselves. Whatever damage she has done to our dog we do not know yet, but we will update if he does indeed have any further injuries. And to the people that work at the clinic - how can you possibly work in a profession with someone who has so little respect or care for her patients? This is NOT the only bad experience people have had Im just finding out now.. SAY SOMETHING. DO SOMETHING. read more

We've been taking our cats here since we moved to Hibbing. The hospital came highly recommended by fellow pet owners. And even after the old vet retired, the ones who took over the practice were well known and loved in the area, such so that patients followed them to the new practice, driving a half hour or more farther just to get such excellent care for their pets. I can't tell you how wonderful the staff and vets are. Our cats are elderly and, consequently, we've had a lot of experience with this hospital. All sorts of kitty ailments have been treated by these great doctors with success. They even understand when we are being kitty parent hypochondriacs because they love animals and people who love animals. Unfortunately, we've also have experienced Mesaba's care when it was time send one of our boys home. The doctors there are so caring and understanding, they truly made a horrible experience not so horrible. It was the most beautiful, peaceful end to our boy's life I could have ever wished for. We are grateful we had Mesaba there to guide us through such a difficult and painful experience. And they sent us such a lovely bereavement card afterward that dh and I swore we would never let another person we know lose a pet without making some gesture of condolence and acknowledging their pet's special life. The card really touched our hearts that much. As I type this, our very old cat is being cared for in their clinic, in a last ditch effort to make sure that it is really his time. That was our choice. Once again, we have the counsel of a caring and understanding doctor who outlined all our choices so we could not only make an informed decision but also come to grips with what will likely be then next step. While my heart is breaking, and I wish my boy could be home with me right now, I have no doubt he is being given the best care. I pray that he rallies with the IV and meds, but if he doesn't I know I will get the frank advice we need to let go. And, if we need to let go, we know our boy will be in good hands and the experience will be as good as something so painful could possibly be. read more

Drs. Kalinowski and Keller are two of the most thorough, professional, caring, and knowledgeable veterinarians I've ever found. Their service sets the standard by which others should be measured. The vets explain the exam as doing it; explain why they would like to do additional testing, if needed; and provide thorough information on a plan of care, whether surgical, medical, behavioral, or general wellness. I don't know if it's possible to find a more devoted, caring vet than Dr. Kalinowski. He has considerable experience, a gentle temperament, and a great mind at puzzling out difficult situations. They take the time to make sure your pet is as comfortable as possible and establish great rapport with your furry friend. My cats loved Drs. Kalinowski and Keller, and Dr. Keller was fantastic about giving me care options, support, and input right up until the end. I have two new cats and have moved 80 minutes away. There are several vets within 15 minutes. But I'm thinking about making the drive; they're that good. I forgot to mention that their follow up on how your pet is doing is fantastic, and it feels like they are a true partner in your pet's health care. They're there whenever you need them, including emergency care at odd hours. And somehow, they do all this while providing service at an incredibly reasonable price (in comparison to other vets I've seen). Bravo. read more

I have been bringing my cats & dogs here for years - 23 to be exact - to Dr. Toivola and now Dr. Kalinowski. Dr. K is AWESOME with me and more importantly with all of my animals. The girls at the front desk are fun and sometimes a little off the wall, I actually enjoy their humor and find it refreshing. There have been a couple of times that I have not received the best bedside manner, but I stick with Dr. K and he's great. He recently performed a CCL repair on my dog, saved me over $1,000 from bigger city vets and my dog is at 95% use. I love my 4-legged family and I wouldn't consider taking them to anyone other than Dr. K! read more

I am one of "those people" that treat my animals like my own children...I live an hour from this Hospital but would drive 20 if I had to... "Dr. K" is trustworthy & caring...staff goes above & beyond, always....wouldn't let anyone else touch my fur babies. As far as the bad reviews I have to say I'm surprised...all I can think is these idiots that gave it bad reviews either own or work at another Hospital...the one with the pit bull mix sounds extremely high maintenance and just straight up Bitch. Will never ever bring my dog here again, my dog had an appointment today to get his nails trimmed, from the very start he's had a bad experience here and has never liked it since so he has to be put to sleep to have it done, today my husband voiced to Dr. Kalinowski that he needed two shots like they always give him or more time to fall asleep with them always being in such a hurry it's about the money not about the dogs the vet proceeded when Tank was not ready so he was upset the vet picked him up slammed him down on his back and hurt him because he yelped. My husband was irate and said a few things to the vet as the vet responded to blaming Tank behavior for his actions my called me right after he had left very upset, I had called the vet back and without even asking put the vet on the phone I let him know we were not happy and before I could even explain why his response was if u want to take him some where else that's up to u.. Instead of even apologizing, If you are going to be a vet you should care about the animals I am sure my dog isn't the only animal you deal with that dose not like it. Dr. Toivola, we miss you so much! We are now looking for a new vet. We elected to continue using Mesabi Animal Hospital and what a mistake that was!!!! Dr. Kellar saw Zeus for his 2nd set of shots today. Now keep in mind Zeus is still a puppy and a happy puppy at that, and wanted to friend this new person. He was extremely wiggly. This Dr didn't give a rats ass about the animal, or attempt to be friendly towards him. and stabbed him like she was using a dagger! There was blood everywhere! & on Jeff legs! Then she opted to reprimand Jeff about how he was not trained!!!!!!!!! She wanted to sedate Zeus for checking his ears. Jeff said no ypu wont! Now we have had plenty of animals, and never once was it suggested that any of them be sedated to look in their years. She said she will take him in the back because there would be more people to hold him. Jeff heard this ,so called Dr., yelling and screaming at him. And the most terrifying whining coming from Zeus. No way in HELL any animals should be objected to this type of treatment. The very 1st sentence gives you some idea how keen her observations were. She claimed, in the 1st sentence, that he was neutered!!!!! We'll ne is NOT neutered!. So beware if you are patronizing Mesabi Animal Hospital! We have used this hospital for several years for dogs, cat, ferrets, and guinea pigs. We have had nothing but good experiences, and willingness to treat our animals with the love and respect that they deserve. The one thing I particularly appreciate is the way the vets have been willing to educate the families regarding the care of the animals. I have even brought my daughter in to visits and she was able to understand everything that was going on and be comforted by the care given without being scared or anxious. Also, this is a little less minor, but the cost of medications and procedures is very reasonable. Overall, this hospital has been very good to work with and wonderful to our animals. read more
