Swan Boat Restaurant We were looking for a place for lunch to celebrate my adult daughter's birthday and spotted tables and chairs from across the water, the location of the swan boat. We ordered a chicken flat bread, roast beef flat bread, Greek salad, and some pasta. Not knowing what kind of food to expect at a boat house we were all pleasantly surprised at the quality of the food. The chicken flat bread was wonderful, crispy on the outside, warm and moist on the inside. The roast beef sandwich was also delicious and warm. Both good sized sandwiches were served with homemade chips and a pickle. The Greek salad was refreshing and plentiful full of mixed greens, tomatoes, olive, cheese, and cucumber. Siting by the water front was so peaceful and relaxing after walking much of Roger Williams Park. The park had other restaurants by the carousal and in the zoo, but those served fast food hot dogs and such. We finished off our meal with a couple of ice creams. The Swan boat restaurant was such a wonderful and tasty surprise that my group all agreed, it was the best and most memorable part of our day in the Park. The waterfront atmosphere made it perfect! Roger Williams Park in general was very nice and quaint. We enjoyed walking through the botanical garden, Japanese garden, and the next day the zoo since we were short on time the first day. read more

This is a park that is at the heart of my childhood. You can access the park from several different locations both in Providence and Cranston. There are so many activities to participate in, including the zoo, Japanese garden, or the carousel. I went for the Juneteenth festival at the Temple of Music. A historic park named after a theologian, author, and minister, Roger Williams. He also created a settlement and called it Providence Plantations, which is present day Rhode Island. The park was his family farm and gifted to the City of Providence when the last decendant, Betty, passed away. It is located in Providence and bordering Cranston. This park was in close proximity to where I used to live as a child. My family would frequent it on nice days. A few of the notable spots were the Temple to Music, boat house, botanical center, Japanese Garden, trails, lakes, and a picnic area with a small manmade waterfall over stairs. The park is pretty during the day and is a popular spot for locals. I used to drive through the park at night and it's super creepy. Whether it be from paranormal or sketchy characters. There are many ghost stories that I heard growing up. I am actually more concerned with the sketchy characters since there have been bodies found there. The lakes are dirty, I wouldn't advise swimming in it or eating the fish lol. read more

Roger Williams Park Zoo is such a gem in Providence, Rhode Island. The zoo is designed for walking around and exploring zoo exhibits as well as locating animals and other zoo attractions. The zoo is home to over 100 rare and fascinating species from around the world. Daily Zoo Admission Prices is $21 for Adults, $15 for Children (2-12), and $17 for Seniors (62+). There is also an opportunity to have a membership to save with free admission for a full year, discounts on select events and programs, and reciprocal discounts to more than 100 other zoos and aquariums nationwide. Roger Williams Park Zoo also has a promotion for residents of the City of Providence which I took advantage of on Saturday, July 6th. As a "thank you" to Providence residents whose tax money helps to support the Zoo, the first Saturday of every month is free to residents of the City of Providence (not East or North Providence). A valid ID and proof of residency must be shown at the ticket window, no need to reserve your tickets in advance. Acceptable forms of identification or residency include a driver's license, State issued ID, Providence Municipal IDs, lease agreement, utility bill, etc. It was a rainy Saturday morning but we arrived around 10am and there were already many cars in the parking lot. The parking lot does have ample spaces but you may have to circle around if it is crowded. The rain did not stop people from visiting the zoo. I went to the admission window and showed my driver's license and I went through for free. I started with the lower and upper Savanna to see the zebras, cheetahs, red river hogs, elephants, and Masai giraffes. Then, I proceeded to the other areas-Wild Woodlands, World of Adaptations, Faces of the Rainforest, Himalayan Trek, and the Farmyard. At the Farmyard, there were opportunities to buy food and feed the goats. Also at the connection corner, there was an opportunity to touch armadillos. At the Textron Elephant & Giraffe Pavilion, I saw the zookeepers taking care of the elephants. I even caught the Flights of Fantasy: An Interactive Bird Show presented by BankRI. The zookeeper talked about a few different bird species and showed us their flying capabilities. Shows are held daily now through September 2nd at 11am and 2pm. There were so many animals to see and the signs through the zoo are super helpful if you get lost or are looking for something in particular. Also, there are Roger Williams Park Zoo volunteers walking around to answer any questions you may have or to provide more information about the animals. I had a perfectly splendid time at Roger Williams Park Zoo. Roger Williams Park Zoo always has great events going on. For example, Food Truck Friday at Carousel Village every Friday from April 19th - September 27th, Dragons & Mythical Creatures, and the opportunity to have an up-close and personal interactions with some of the animals. I've been to Roger Williams Park Zoo for the Asian Lantern Spectacular in 2022 and for the Jack-O-Lantern Spectacular in 2023. Roger Williams Park turned out to be quite a bit larger than anticpated.  It's got lots of things to see and check-out, including lakes, ponds, monuments, and gardens - there's even an old building that at one time housed a casino. Friday nights in the summer time is a great time to visit.  At that time, you'll find the park replete with food trucks and the sounds of live music :-) Over and above the many other attractions, there's also a decently equipped playground, with enough stuff to keep a typical kid busy for at least 20 or 30 minutes.  There's also an old fashioned Carousel where kids can take a ride for just two dollars.  Overall this is a very nice park to visit - you won't be sorry if you take the time to stop by. read more

Local resident here. I walk this park all year round and I notice in the fall workers are busy blowing leaves mowing here and there, and picking up branches and debris. But in summer time it's total opposite. The land scape maintenance around trails and flats has been getting worser. They mainly cut grass around popular tourist area like Temple of music...etc. The rest is atrocious! I don't understand the concept of hiring more employees and doing less work. Only people that walk through the park and trails know, tourist driving in their vehicle would never tell the difference it's just a facade. read more

How lucky we are to have such a treasure in Providence, especially this time of year. Plenty of walking trails and a path around the perimeter of the park. Wildlife ranges from water fowl to carp to heron to muskrats. Large lakes where you can canoe or fish....or ride a swan boat! A carousel and HUGE play area for the kiddos, too. This park is the "Central Park of Providence". It has so much to offer and it's so big. We go frequently for walks or for events. We often see regulars on their daily jogs or runs along the nice sidewalks. The Roger Williams Park (RWP) was created in 1871 on land bequeathed to the City of Providence by Betsey Williams, the last descendent of Roger Williams to inherit his land. Today, the park's 435+ acres offer opportunities for all to play and learn, truly making it "The People's Park." The park is home to many attractions for locals and tourists, including: - The Carousel Village - The Botanical Garden - Museum of Natural History and Planetarium - The Zoo. The Rhode Island Foundation, a non profit organization in the state, began a renovation effort in the park in 2016 as a celebration of their centennial, beginning with the park's historic bandstand. The renovations expanded to other park buildings and entrances. A few years later, a dedicated bike and pedestrian lane was added to Frederick Green Memorial Boulevard as part of these renovations. This is the one of the best known state parks in Rhode Island, managed and beautifully maintained by the Providence Parks Department and listed on the National Register of Historic Places. It's also a kind of little engine that could for our state. There are lovely clean and well-maintained walking trails that take you either on paths around the tree-lined lake or on paved roads around and within the park's green space. (That lake I mentioned? In season you can rent a swan shaped paddle boat that puts you directly on the water.) The park has a zoo that has begun to host several special after-hour events (for extra fees beyond the zoo entrance fee): the Halloween season Jack-O-Lantern Festival, and a Chinese Lantern Festival are true standouts. The beautiful marble columned open air Temple to Music hosts... wait for it... free musical performances. We have a modest Museum of Natural History that has a planetarium. There's a botanical garden (and a community garden), and horse stable - and a working carousel, playground, and pony rides for the kids. I've attended a wedding in the repurposed former casino, and observed numerous brides having there formal wedding pictures taken on the gazebo that spans the lake. And Food Truck Fridays?! Seriously, this is an ideal spot for a day in nature, right in Providence (with an entrance/exit just over the line in Cranston). It's a relaxing way to spend a day - although I'm here frequently to get some exercise walking the paths. read more

This is a beautiful park and quite expansive. According to their website, the park was created in 1871 after Betsey Williams bequeathed 102 acres of farmland and woodland to the city of Providence to be used for public purpose. A portion of the gift included land that was shared with her great, great, great grandfather, Rhode Island founder Roger Williams, by the Narragansett sachems Canonicus and Miantonomo. It was intended to serve as an escape for those working in highly industrialized Providence in the late nineteenth century. Twenty years after Betsey's bequest, the Park quadrupled in size and daily attendance had grown to 15,000 visitors. Today the park has more than 435 acres offering something for everyone including family picnics, community festivals, weddings and other events, running, fishing, kayaking, swan (pedal) boats, a museum and planetarium, a zoo, indoor carousel and more. Dogs are allowed on a leash. Each year over 1.5 million visitors enjoy the the "People's Park". For those not familiar with Roger Williams, he was quite the progressive. After finishing school in England, Roger Williams traveled to the Massachusetts Bay Colony. His "radical views" on religious freedom and pro Native American leanings earned him the wrath of church leaders - he was banished from the colony and fled to Narragansett Bay with his followers. He purchased land from the Narragansett Indians and established a new colony, which became a haven for Baptists, Quakers, Jews and other religious minorities. Williams's notion of religious freedom and the separation of church and state inspired the framers of the U.S. Bill of Rights. Roger Williams Park is about 5 miles from downtown Providence and well worth the 10 minute drive. With so much to do there, it's not surprising that it's a very popular spot. Just when I think I've discovered every attraction in Providence, I always find something new! Besides housing the Roger Williams Park Zoo, Natural History Museum, and Botanical Center, Roger Williams Park is a beautiful destination in its own right! The 3.2 mile loop around the lakes is a great path for a long, peaceful walk or even a brisk trail run. The paths are all well-labeled and maintained. There's ample parking at multiple spots around the park. Wildlife is all over, including birds and turtles. The Temple to Music is an interesting location for a picnic or even (dare I say it) an Instagram photoshoot. The only downside is that it's a little difficult to get here without a car, although I believe the #1 bus line goes here. Overall I highly recommend Roger Williams Park for a fun, FREE activity in the heart of Providence! read more

All the time I lived in California ( almost 20 years), I missed this park so much! The parks It is the one thing that truly says Rhode Island to me. It holds such fond memories for me, as I was growing up and once returning, spending time with my young daughter there. My mother worked the graveyard shift, at the state hospital. In the summer, she'd come in from work, pack up her cot, some sandwiches and koolaid and take all five of us kids out to the park to run wild and play. She'd sleep, while we'd play.( I was the nerdy child, who sat with my book, guarding her while she slept, while the others played.) Now I love walking in the park and discovering how much peace it brings me. I'm still in awe of its' magnificence. I wish people had more respect for this gorgeous gift and not litter so much. But I ordered a garbage picker upper stick and I'll do some cleaning next time I visit the park. I'll make it a habit. read more

Even with limited services there was plenty to see. Lots of signage explaining where to go and what to see. Limited food options, but one of the best sriracha chicken sandwiches I have ever had. We were completely floored how good the food was. Rainforest was open, but no animal feeding or interaction areas. Plenty of animals outside though. This is a nice park in the city. The park has a carousel, swan boats, playground, botanical garden, planetarium, museum, Japanese garden, zoo, tennis courts, and much more! It is a great place to have a picnic, ride a bike, fly a kite, take a hike, bring the kids, or do a photo shoot here. There are many spots in the park that provide beautiful backgrounds for photos like the bridges or the temple of music (made of pretty white marble). They've recently added speed bumps and bike lanes to the park to make it safer. I think it's a great park overall, but took off a star as it doesn't always attract the best people. Being right in the city, there can be some pretty obnoxious people at the park blaring their music or doing other annoying things. The good thing is - the park is big enough that if you do encounter this, you can just continue driving until you find your own nice spot to hang out at. read more

A beautifully kept park with a great zoo, not a huge zoo but it's a great day to spend walking thru all the zoo exhibits. We go a few times a year. There's something there for everyone. I've been going since I could ride a bicycle. I get flashbacks as a kid when ever I go they the park. I'm sharing some of those great memories now with my 7 year old. They use to host the 4th of July fireworks display right at the temple of music when I was a kid. I love pulling in after picking up some take out to take in lunch at the park when I'm in the area. Dirty, dirty, dirty. I couldn't get over how filthy the grounds were along with the ponds and waterways. We were there in mid April and maybe they have a spring cleanup that hasn't occurred yet but right now I am embarrassed at how bad everything looked. Beyond that, we had a great stroll through the Japanese Zen Garden, some older homesteads that weren't open that day and then over to the carousel & the swan boats. It reminded me of the Boston Common but a lot hillier and bigger. Lots of activities for the kids to keep them busy if you need something that is completely free to kill a couple of hours. Another thing I was disappointed in were the food options next to the children's park. Nothing was healthy unless you count popcorn and pretzels. They could offer up something like peanut butter and jelly and I would have been happier but we decided to skip lunch after seeing this, even though we really wanted to give the place some of our money by eating here. There is work to be done here to keep it tidier and because of that, we aren't about to rush back and I've noticed this issue with other RI parks as well. I hope this isn't a state issue in general and only isolated to the places we have been. Shame on RI if their parks & rec dept. isn't well funded. read more

The park is very clean and the grounds are just beautifully kept. We come for food truck fridays, lots of fun. there's always live music and the foods great everytime, theres a carousel and swan boats. Definitely recommend going. Keep in mind there are now running restrooms, the place gets extremely crowded and parking can be very difficult as it fills up so fast, i recommend getting there early. Great big park in Providence. Came here on a friday afternoon and it was not packed at all. I walked from the carousel to the botanical garden and it was a pleasant 15 min walk. There are young and old people here from joggers to walkers to babies to skateboarders. There's some trails and paved trails. There is even a "Japanese garden" section with lots of still water. Jeepers what can be more beautiful than a ride in the park especially here. Roger Williams Park is so beautiful and so well kept up that it really is the pride of Providence and Rhode Island. The zoo is very fun and instructional for the kids. When my children were young, many years ago, the zoo was actually free. Of course there is much more to do at the zoo now and many more events and I guess everything has a price now. The park itself is just stunning. When I was younger I didn't take the time to enjoy the statues and the architecture and the landscape but now I like to ride through and just really soak it all in. It is beautiful at any season and busy at every season. When I am able to get back to walking I look forward to walking these paths again and bringing picnic lunches and listening to music in the park and really enjoying the gem that we have. read more

It is for the park around the zoo. :) It's a haven in the middle of the city where you can walk in the trees and stand by a small lake & watch the birds play in the water. There's walking (or jogging/running if that is your pleasure) trails. There's quiet in the midst of the chaos of the city. There's tennis courts, softball/baseball fields, and basketball courts. There's a carousel - yes, who doesn't love wrangling their inner child and riding or watching the carousel move 'round and 'round. You can picnic in the park or come for the occasional outdoor concerts at the Temple of Music. You can have an event in the historic Casino or maybe grab a bite from one of the food trucks hanging out in the evening. Or pay homage at any of the multiple memorials and monuments. Roger Williams Park is just fantastic. I loved visiting the park during the month of October and seeing all of the colorful fall foliage. The Lovers Bridge is quite nice and the Peristyle pavilion and gazebo is beautiful. There are flowers all throughout the park and the trees are the most beautiful colors of yellow, orange, red, and copper. The Carousel Village is so whimsical and I love finding old carousels. A park with a zoo Roger Williams Park is a beautiful park of well over 400 acres. It was given to the town by Betsy Williams, a descendant of Roger Williams who was one of the founding fathers of Rhode Island. Roger received the land from Canonicus, the great chief of the Narragansett tribe. Exactly how Mr Williams got the land is still somewhat in doubt. Of course the sanitized historical account says that Canonicus gave the land willing to Williams out of gratitude and generosity. Other versions of the story relate a somewhat more nefarious encounter involving coercion and threats. Like most history the actually details are swept away in the mists and fogs of time. Whatever the proper temporal account of the park may be, there can be no denying this is one fantastic place. A very clean and diverse group of walking paths, nice lakes for boating and fishing, elaborate playground for kids and excellent handicap access everywhere. The famous Roger Williams Zoo is also contained within the park as well as the Natural History Museum and Planetarium, the Botanical Gardens and greenhouses, the Historical Carousel, and various gorgeous outdoor areas for music. Trees, flowers and birds are everywhere and even the original house that Betsy Williams built is still present. Weddings, graduations and celebrations of all kinds are always taking place in the park. A great place to come all year long because there is just so many different things to see and do in a clean and safe environment. This has to be one of the most impressive city parks anywhere and people of all ages take full advantage it's wonderful facilities. read more

I mean, this place is gorgeous! They have recently made a ton of upgrades to the park that only enhance the natural beauty of this park. Several small lakes and ponds, a great loop to walk, ride or drive around. So much greenery, a waterfall you name it. Don't forget to check out the botanical gardens, the museum on the property, the swan boats, playgrounds, tennis courts, community garden, the zoo, the stall where the mounted police keep their horses... This place is kind of cool. I've come here a bunch as a kid and more recently, for the Cyclocross Festival. There's always something going on here. It's a popular place for wedding pictures. There are gatherings and festivals scattered throughout the park on most weekends. Paddleboats rentals are a fun way to work off a heavy lunch. The Japanese Garden is kinda cool. The my dad loves the Botanical Center. Not that I ever would ever come here at night, but my parents have always warned me that the park gets a scary. It is in a bad part of town. I've seen minor drug use out in the open. There was a curious case of a woman that was found burned to death near the Casino last year (and sketchy Projo reporting on the incident from the November 22, 2011 archives). I used to work on Melrose St, right across the highway. My building and parking lot had secure barb wire fences. I remember one of my first days working there, coworkers saying that they had to seek an alternate route to get onto Route 95 to get home because prison work crew discovered a crime scene near the entrance of the park (December 7, 2006 Projo archives). So hopefully, you skipped over the 3rd paragraph and are enjoying your DAY at Roger WIlliams Park. Don't go there at night (says my parents)! And sorry for bringing to light the creepier side of that park. read more

Roger Williams is by far the best park in Rhode Island and that's because it's huge and it has a Zoo inside and it has a carousel... Roger Williams is where I will go if I'm taking the kids sledding it's where I go during summer time to chase squirrels it is amazing. They have a really cute Japanese garden that could use better up keep but is super cute with little bridges. If providence has more money the park would probably be a million times better and when I didn't have kids years and years ago I didn't love this park but once you have kids you can see the beauty in a park with options and places to park and places to kinda just run around. The kids playground inside the park near the carousel is or I probably should say was sponsored by hasbro but that spot is a total dumpster fire. They built it and then let it just fall apart so do not go to RW for this feature because you will be very disappointed especially since you could just drive to Pawtucket village or even the field across from RW with the baseball field and all the duck poop has a killer kids areas and tennis courts for scooter riding and a basketball court! read more

We headed to Providence for a day trip & this park was on our list of things to do. At first glance, it is really a beautiful urban park. There are walking paths, gardens, ponds with scenic bridges, plus the carousel & zoo. We spent about an hour near the ponds, Japanese garden & Natural History Museum. I agree with a few other Yelpers -no trash cans- and this is obviously a big problem. Trash in the grass, in the water, on the trails. It's such a shame, an easy problem to fix. There are still many resident geese & ducks, a long with a few not-so-bright humans ignoring the many signs that say, "do no feed the ducks." Dirty birds... If you are sensitive to poison ivy, stay off the trails. It was everywhere. We took a 20 minute ride on the swan paddle boats which was entertaining for my six year old son. Not sure it was worth $5 per person, but we'll let this one slide since it was such a beautiful day. Overall a beautiful park & a fun place for an outing. Clean it up a bit more & I'd give it 5 stars. read more
