I came here with a big group a couple of years ago and we were all really impressed by the authenticity and the value for money. I was excited to bring some of the last group plus a few new faces here, but unfortunately I can see things have changed a little bit. It's not the authenticity, everything still tastes great (hence the the stars). It's the value for money (hence the minus two stars). As examples, the amount of guacamole you get for £7.50 is quite wrong. The taco tray to share is a fantastic idea and without a doubt delicious, but four tacos for the price is a bad value main and not going to fill you up. Drinks are expensive too, on a par (and in most cases a little higher) with central London club prices. It pains me to say this but this is no longer my favourite Mexican place in London. read more

Came for the after tequila club for a leaving do. Had to stand awkwardly by the bar, in the way of the loos. Ten of us had three drinks each and the 'complimentary tapas', as promised on the menu, was two small dishes of tortilla and guacamole. Two. That was it. For two hours. And we had to chase. Two couples on a Friday night. Room was crowded and very loud. Not a huge place, but tall ceilings and lots of hard surfaces = not great acoustics. Difficult to hear each other at times. We came here on a recommendation and we weren't disappointed. We ended up going for lots of little mini starters rather that the larger dishes. All had great flavour, freshly cooked and very moorish. They might of been on the heavy side with a tad more cheese than expected but who doesn't love cheese? Best bit about it all was the margaritas, they don't hold back on the tequila. THE BEST MEXICAN IN LONDON, hands down. This ain't no texmex, this is authentic Mexican at its best. BEST MARGARITA. BEST TACOS. BEST TEQUILA SELECTION. Get the hotpot, it's amazing. Service can be slow sometimes, but the quality of food makes up for it. As a person of Mexican descent, I can fully vouch that Mestizo is the best Mexican restaurant in all of London...and perhaps beyond. There is a certain nuance of flavor that the food has, which is due to their ingredients having been flown in from the "mother land". The mole enchiladas are to die for. And the tacos are precisely what your Mexican grandma would've made....with no cheese and lettuce but just a tortilla, meat, coriander and onion. I also had the Grand Cadillac margarita...it knocked my socks off, very well made! ¡Que rico! Best of all, the prices are quite moderate considering the quality. All around a really good experience. This is the second time I've been to mestizo with a big group. The service is excellent, attentive and nice. Good Mexican food is pretty hard to come by in London, this is very good. The tortilla crisps they deliver at the beginning are hilarious because they literally give you 7 crisps but they are good about refilling. This is hands down the best Mexican food I've had in London, and I've been searching for 14 months to find a place to fill the hole in my heart that has been here since moving from North Carolina (which has GREAT Mexican food) last year. The queso fundido with chorizo is fantastic. The chihuahua cheese mix really hits the spot and reminds me of home. Less creamy than I'm used to, but still really good. The guacamole was fresh and flavorful. The chips also were quite nice- fresh tasting, not stale, right amount of salt. I had nachos for my main and they were the only decent nachos I've had in London. Decent is and understatement though. They were DELICIOUS. Beans, the right kinds of cheese, jalapeños, chicken. Not soggy, still crunchy and amazing. Would've been better if it came with salsa on it, but I was able to add some that my friends had on the side. Made it very yummy! For drinks we just did a pitcher of the house margarita on the rocks. Nothing fancy, but it hit the spot! My friends ordered the taco tray. Loved every filling. Proper Latin comfort food and genuine Mexican favourites are difficult to pin down in London while it's overshadowed by nouvelle cuisine and fancier options. So Mestizo's is a little oasis of guacamole and authentic dishes such as the (literally) sizzling hot molcajete. As well as top notch food and service they also pride themselves of having the best tequila in town. So in turn there frozen margaritas are frikkin lethal...infact I blacked out most of the meal after a jug and memories of how yummy it all was came sifting back afterwards. Finding a good Mexican restaurant in London is very difficult. There are plenty of decent burito places, but most every Mexican joint is just plain crap. But even if they had competition, this place still would have knocked the socks off of me. Their staff is friendly, their food fresh, and their prices fair. Took my girlfriend here on a date and she was very impressed. Good atmosphere and great presentation with the food. Would recommend to anyone! Very authentic! read more

This must be the closest so far to real Mexican food. The staff is mainly from latin-america and the food is quite good. I would recommend they go for real handmade tortillas and the place would be perfect. Go on a Thursday and stay after your meal to dance and have a good time at their function room. I visited this place last night with a mixed group of nationalities including an American (me) and a friend from Mexico City. On the whole, a good experience, with our Mexican friend swearing it lived up to her expectations of a proper meal in Mexico City. I'll echo some earlier reviewers - this is not Cali-Mex / Tex-Mex. So, don't expect Burritos. Instead, the focus is on proper mexican mains. If I'm being honest, I've had better proper Mexican Food in North America - but by London standards, this is pretty tasty. (One exception - the Guacamole was pretty meh) I would say, that my only complaint has to do with service/attention to detail. My main was luke warm, dirty starter plates were delivered, my water glass revealed stuck on food. Again, the taste was spot on - but they could use a bit of work elevating the whole experience. I was really disappointed at this mexican eatery. Firstly, because my fellow diner and I were stuck in a tiny corner, to be later further boxed in by other diners. The service was strange, as it runs on a traffic light system (green side of block=service, red side=not) which I thought was pointless. I ordered the mole (pronounced molay), and didn't like it one bit. To be fair the waitress did try to warn me; asking 'have you tried it before', and I hadn't; but should have guessed it's an acquired taste. I attended a birthday dinner downstairs at this place and let me tell you, had a great time!!! Although it was a little hard to see because the front is a little hidden, the Marquarita's were superb, although very strong, and the waiting staff were very efficient. Having lived in London for over two years and desperately trying to encounter REAL Mexican food, to finally find Mestizo was like finding Mecca! It's real Mexican with hints of South American and Spanish flavour and style. The best thing on the menu is Molcajete Mestizobeef, chicken or combination (or vegitarian), served in a stone bowl with cheese, chorizo, spring onions, cilantro and avocado and your choice of salsa roja, tomatillo, mole or chipotle. It sounds like fajitas and it is, but the mix of spices and flavour is better than any I've had (and I've had a lot). The tequila selection is huge and despite some criticism of poor service, I've never had a problem with the staff. Bottom lineMestizo is great! I've been here before and I remember it being pretty great, but maybe it was all the Tequila. On second visit, this was pretty lack lustre. For the decor, the white table cloths and table settings looked oddly formal. The food came out alarmingly fast, and it was a bit limp. 6 of us popped in here on a Thursdsy night intending to take advantage of the happy hour and to eat. First we were told only corona beer. This only changed when we let it be known we might go elsewhere. I got the distinct impression that they didn't want to save the full advertised range of beer, money saving. Then we were hassled for a food order and waited and waited for our drinks and continued to be hassled for a food order. After about 10 minutes and no sign of drinks we gave up and left. First of all I am Mexican. I visited Mestizo for the first time today. As one would say in mexico I felt this was a: 'robo a mano armada' in other words; way too expensive for what it really was. That being said, service (by Alejandra) was good. My Michelada was good. Pipian Duck was chewy and overpriced. Restaurant lacked atmosphere (music?!) and the manageress (?) kept cackling on the phone all through my meal. Starter, main and drink for 29gbp?! Will NOT be coming back or recommending. THE MOST AUTHENTIC MEXICAN FOOD IN LONDON! In other words, this is ACTUAL-MEXICAN FOOD. And if you don't happen to like Mexican food then you probably don't like Mexican at all. (Just for the record: Tex-Mex is NOT mexican! which is what you get mostly in USA, and southern california too). It was quite surprising to find out that a place like Mestizo actually existed in London. Being Mexican myself, Im not a big fan of mexican food outside Mexico, but this one really made me forget for a moment that I was an ocean away. This restaurant is more gourmet Mexican cuisine, and the ingredients are pretty authentic. It does come with a price since the place is not cheap (not too expensive either) however, it was definitely well worth it. The "Mole Poblano" and everything esle I've ever ordered there has been very tasty. Probably the only thing is tortillas are a bit different that the usual in Mexico, however I guess its as good as you can do them here. Their Tequila selection is wide and varied, and for tequila of the week they displayed Tequila Ambar, which was a proof that their offer is very high quality. And we had som very good cocktails too! Something else: People, please STOP taking southern californian food as refererence to Mexican. What is found in the USA is mostly tex-mex food which is mexican-inspired but not mexican-authentic. Amazing Mexican food a little off the beaten path in London. Only three or four blocks from the Warren St. tube station. The taco tray for two was incredible, with four types of meat (lamb, pork, beef and chicken) and ample toppings. There were also great vegetarian options for the vegetarian in our group. read more

I went here for Sunday lunch a few months ago as they do an all you can eat lunch, with as much wine and beer as you like, and that seemed like a good idea. It wasn't. The food was ok though the vegetarian offerings were more minimal than the website suggested but the main issue was that the service was pretty surly, we had the strong impression that they resented us for not being Mexican and we got significantly worse service than anyone else there. read more

The service was spot on, whenever we needed recommendations a staff member was ready to help. Arrived at this busy restaurant without a reservation. Staff however found us a table as soon as one became available. Great Mexican fare and a very extensive menu. This is not your Tex-Mex variety of Mexican but instead an interesting range of national dishes using a wide variety of specialty ingredients. Pricing was reasonable too.
