Mestizo is the best Mexican restaurant in London. Sadly the quality comes at a price, but they have a variety of excellent dishes and a bar downstairs with a taqueria attached. Staff are friendly, service is good, food is great and you generally come away feeling quite satisfied. read more

I went here for the Sunday brunch today. There's some quite negative comments about service/attitude below but that's certainly not the experience I had. Maybe it was different as the brunch is buffet based so we weren't getting served at our table, but I'd never had some of the food on offer before so needed some help. The guy on the soup / taco / fajita counter was happy to advise, he brought our food over to the table rather than make us wait at the counter, and made several personal recommendations as to what I should have next. The food - my experience of Mexican is burritos, fajitas and tacos so there was a lot of stuff here I hadn't had before and its all great. Probably the best was spinach enchilada, the black beans, or the courgette cake but I'd have it all again. And great value £19.99 per head for as much food as you want plus one beer or glass of wine, and unlimited soft drinks. read more

I'm a big fan of authentic Mexican food, and it was a great relief to find that there was somewhere else to go after El Mercado in Stoke Newington revised its menu to suit people more used to TexMex. TexMex is fine for lunch, but if I'm going for dinner I'd prefer to have a proper meal. Mestizo usually delivers on this level for me. While cuitlacoche/huitlacoche (corn fungus) is dissapointingly not on the menu, a lot of good Mole's (sauces) are, and the starters are quite good too. I can recommend the Sopa de Tortilla as a starter, which is basically a sour tomato soup served with cream and avocado with strips of tortilla. You mix it together bit by bit and eat. Delicious. The soft tacos as a starter are quite nice and there are a variety of fillings available. Molcajete is probably the principle dish on the menu, but I've not tried it yet (which looks to be very popular), but I'd definitely recommend the Mole Poblano, succulent chicken breast (boiled I think) smothered in a chocolate mole, with rice and refried beans. I have had an issue with the Mole Poblano on occasion where the standard sometimes slips and the chicken breast has been overcooked and the mole not as tasty/spicy as normal. The Mole Verde is quite tasty, but not fantastic. The desserts are very good, the Crepas de Cajeta seem to be actually made with arequipe/dulce de leche not caramel (which is quite a big bonus for me). They also offer a Sunday brunch menu which I've not yet tried, but it does include pericos aka huevos a la Mexicana which are a favourite of mine (basically scrambled eggs with spring onions, tomato, onion and chile). The location is a bit out of the way, but the restaurant itself is quite contemporary looking and modern, the service is usually decent, but not standout and sometimes a bit unfriendly. The great thing about Mestizo is the diversity of food available, I highly recommend this restaurant and indeed, I look forward to experimenting with new flavours on my future visits here. The only reason that I don't give this place 5 stars is that it offers no dishes with cuitlacoche/huitlacoche (a favourite of mine) and the quality of food and service has been known to be a bit inconsistent. On recommendation, and because it's close to a client's, I ventured, full of expectation, down the bleak hinterland of lower Hampstead Rd to find this restaurant. As I neared Mestizo, I saw a group of children in a nearby street throw a glass bottle into the busy road and then wait, watching for a blowout. "Mmm... " I thought. "Nice neighbourhood." This place must be great to get people to schlepp up here. So, it turned out that although the food was good, it wasn't that good, and the service wasn't that bad - it was really bad. Let's start with the food. The quesadillas had a strangely soft and spongy texture, unlike the folded corn or wheat tortilla versions you'd probably be used to. In one of them, the mashed chicken filling was cold. Not lukewarm - cold. It was a first date, I didn't want to reveal myself as the fussy sod I am, so let it slide. Mistake #1. These soft quesadumplings were surprisingly filling, it was pretty late, so we opted to share a main - the signature Molcajete. We explained to the waiter that we were pretty full and would just share a single main course. It's more-or-less a tapas joint, anyway, so this is comme il faut. When it arrived, a half-hour later, we'd already watched, enviously, the dish brought to other tables - the large, deep stone bowl and contents receiving a warm welcome on their arrival. The reason for the half-hour wait was that the waiter, whose English was just around beginner's level, had misunderstood what we said and thought that the quesadillas were enough. Nobody, during our half-hour wait, had thought to drop by and say "would you like something else" or "everything OK?" Mildly embarrassed on discovering his mistake, the waiter ordered the dish and it arrived within five minutes. Did the waiter say "oh, I'm really sorry - let me get you a drink. What would you like?" You guessed it, dear reader, he didn't. We let that slide, too, both of us too eager to appear easygoing. We ate the Molcajete, but the slightly sour taste left by the nonchalant waiter had, by this time, somewhat spoiled the food itself. A note, when ordering the dish. The stone bowl is mostly made of stone, and the part that contains food is around 2/3 of a dessert-spoon deep. So, don't be disappointed. The bill eventually arrived. This was also delayed because someone else, who'd not been charged for their juice or something, had to be hauled back from the kerb to pay. For a glass of cranberry juice, a mixed fruit cocktail, two glasses of wine, four quesadillas and a bowl of stew, we paid £46. I was somewhat surprised to see we'd been charged for the extra tortillas we'd needed for the Molcajete, but I realised that trying to explain why this wasn't so appropriate, in light of the rest of our dining experience, would be an utter waste of time. I'd recommend this place for diners who: a) are really too drunk to care b) are really too rich " " c) are really too Spanish to be misunderstood when ordering food. Try Wahaca. A friend of mine said that it's not as "authentic" but you'll get fed on time, I suspect and, chances are, your waiter may look you in the eye when he's taking your order. read more

Mestizo has all the looks of a gastronomical, unofficial tourism office for Mexico. Service is good, but not chilled, and the layout of the place makes it kind of uncomfortable for everyone even though it's a large and fastidiously decorated space. Make sure you are facing the outdoors or you will have to stare at that massive flat screen showing the airbrushed beauties of central America in slow-mo. Food is fuss-filled, which I dislike as Mexican cuisine is all about being filling and practical yet quality of food itself is good: fresh, great presentation, really lovely drinks. Fresh, filling, vegetarian friendly and amazingly delicious! My husband and I ate here with our children while traveling in London. I ordered the Sopa de Tortilla - and was given a bowl full of dry tortilla strips. I was somewhat confused about what I had ordered, when a waiter arrived and poured the most delicious soup over top. Everyone else opted to snack on nachos which disappeared quickly. For my meal I ordered the Crepas de Flor de Calabaza; the vegetables inside were cooked perfectly and the flavors were amazing. My husband was very satisfied with his potato and cheese Enchiladas Verdes. The only regret is that the veggie tacos for two were not as kid friendly as we had hoped. There were beans, pico and salsas, and also pickled cactus and Mexican truffles which challenged the kids' adventurous tastes. I tried everything and it was delicious, just not perfect for the kids. The portions were generous and everything we tried was delicious. We left full and happy - I don't think time will allow us to be back for another meal on this trip, but we would return happily. read more

Where to start? This is by far the best Mexican restaurant I encountered in my 2 years in London. Their signature dishes include their taco tray (pick four kinds of meat and they take care of the accoutrements) and the molcajete (Spanish word for the bowl in which it is served, basically a red or green salsa based soup filled with fajita meat and vegetables to serve into your tortillas). The tequila display is also impressive and the frozen margaritas (can be ordered individually or in pitchers) are on point. If you're looking to save a bit of money, make a reservation for one of their two Sunday brunch sittings. You serve yourself buffet style and will not be disappointed, although I highly advise also doing the aforementioned dinner experience at least once because you will miss out otherwise! read more

With respect to transparency, I must declare my love of Mexican food. It is my desert island cuisine and I could eat it every day. The location of this place is a honey trap on the way home from work, so I should wish to eat there at least once a week.... So, to Mestizo... Hmm... The food is good. I am told by more knowledgable and travelled folk that it is reasonably authentic, and the staff all appear to be of Hispanic descent. There is a good variety of Mex dishes - all your usual stuff, together with some fun sharing platters. The restuarant is lacking atmosphere, but it is nice and bright and they can seat quite a few people for its unusual location on Hampstead Road. It is actually split over two floors (not that you would know that from the street). So, I should love it, right? Problem is, to get to my beloved tacos and HUGE frozen margi I have to navigate a long wide load of attitude. You think they would be thankful for people paying well over the odds for a bean and cheese quesadilla, however it always seems to come with a side of surly. By all means try it out, but I warn you that it isn't the warmest reception whatever formation you arrive in (I've been 6+ times - work events, dinner dates, to watch the World Cup for their Mex festival). There is a severe lack of good Mexican restaurants in London, so they could easily vie for the prize, but instead they seem to be doing their best to turn people away. Gutted. read more

I think I had high expectations as I found the food curiously disappointing. It was tasty but nothing more. I had the vaunted chocolaty chicken Mole Poblano which was OK but nothing to write home about. The Molcajete hotpot specials looked interesting so may give them a try if I go back. Huge range of tequila and great margarita (as it should be). Staff slightly abrupt but they managed to smile once or twice. OMG...this is by far the best mexican place in all of London! We had about 20 people and literally ordered almost everything off the menu. We must have also had a bottle of tequila because the bill approached £1,000.00!!! At one point the owner even came over with the bottle and topped us off! What a place!!! read more

One word: Yum! And the service is super friendly. Slight minuses: cocktails are a mixed bag, the toilets could be cleaner and the Sunday buffet is mixed depending on the day. I don't love the decor. But who cares, when the food is this great? Everything else is a plus. The food is unparalled for Mexican cuisine in London. We love that ingredients are available to purchase to make food at home. I love the all-you-can-drink horchata for the Sunday buffet, as well as the odd "chilli pepper month" or "margarita month" that they host, with special menus. My only complaint is having to wear elastic-waisted trousers to accomodate the expansion after gorging myself on the food. read more

As a continental European without any serious experience in Mexican food I can't really tell you whether the food there lives up to Mexican standards. We had Molcajete 'MESTIZO'. I liked it although it won't become my favorite mexican dish. Tacos forever! :) Besides it felt quite pricey... On average 6 GBP for Tacos and main courses start at 11 up to 20 GBP. Not really a place for students to go. Staff was super attentive and helpful - maybe it was a slow Sunday evening with few customers. read more

It does good authentic food, although for a bit bigger of a price tag than I'm used to for what it is (unsurprisingly as I come from the Chicago area which has a plethora of Mexican restaurants). We had the quesadilla appetizer and then tried both the al pastor and conchinita pibil tacos, which were all nicely done with no frills. My only complaint was my michelada was dark from a heavy dose of Worcestershire sauce, much more than I'm used to. read more

Being a Texpat, life can certainly be difficult. The extreme lack of Mexican food with any resembling factor of Mexican cuisine is terrible. I try Mexican restaurants with a hopeless attitude. I expect to walk away disappointed, so my attitude is already lost. Today, however, there was a ray of hope. It isn't like being back home 100%, but it is quite good and gives you a comforting feel to the food. Quite good and authentic. The ambiance of the restaurant is a bit upscale. This is in contrast to the typical Mexican Restaurant, but it was a detractor. The food had great flavors. The salsas were quite nice. And free chips (granted there were only like 10 of them) was a nice addition. The lunch prices were quite good. 5-7 pounds for a meal. I appreciated this. All-in-all this is a restaurant worth going a little out of your way for if it is of interest to you. read more

We ate at Mestizo for the second time & were incredibly disappointed. We took my dad there for an early Father's Day dinner , & from the beginning I could tell it wasn't going to be great. We had a reservation but they still took a LONG time just to take our drink order. Half of the stuff we wanted they did not have & the waitress (believe she might of even been the owner) looked bothered every time we spoke with her . My dad wanted a dish that apparently was for two people & she was incredibly rude to him because he wanted to order that ! After my husband ordered a drink and it was NOT brought out to him. The food wasn't that great, kind of cold. We later were served by a male staff member he was super nice very friendly & recommended the tres leche cake, that I can honestly say is the ONLY thing I enjoyed there. read more

Mole Mole Mole!! I absolutely love Mexican Mole sauce. It's sweet, tangy, rich and spicy...honestly, what's not to love. Until very recently, I had no idea that this delectable, delightful and unrivaled Mexican speciality even existed in London.....and then I came across Mestizo. Forget Chipotle burritos and quesadillas from Wahaca, Mestizo is as authentic as Mexican food gets in London. Ok, so it may not rival California's Mexican cuisine, but we must keep in mind that we are 5,000 miles away. What I can attest to is that the menu features a vast range of specialties - the first that i've seen in London - from Mole Poblano and Mole Verde (sooooo good!), to Enchiladas, Empanadas, Flautas, Jaladas, Al Pastor tacos, Tamales, and their house specialty, the Molcajete Mestizo bowl. My self-professed "Mexican food-obsessed" British friends hadn't even heard of half of these dishes! Needless to say, they loved each and every one..yeah, we tried them all - it was educational dining after all! We washed our food down with a round of Margaritas which were devilishly strong and massive by London standards. The drinks menu also boasts "skinny margaritas," so if you're on a diet, fear not, you can still indulge - although, I can't say the same for the rest of the menu! I was delighted by the extensive salsa menu as well...you can get everything from pico de gallo to salsa verde, habanero, poblano and chipotle sauces. I was literally in a state of mouth burning euphoria that I haven't experienced since my last visit to Gus' Lunch Box in Silverlake (Los Angeles transplants will know what i'm talking about here). There are only 2 major things that I can fault Mestizo on (hence the 4 stars): tortilla chips and white wine. Their tortilla chips are served cold and I can't be fooled here - this isn't right. I have yet to find anywhere in London that sells the piping hot, straight-out-of-the-fryer bad boys that are a staple back home. Note to the owner: hot chips would go down really really well! Secondly, their house wine was pretty disgusting. They only offer one white by the glass and it was bland, lackluster and incapable of holding up to the flavors and spices of the menu... but I guess the solution could always be sticking to the margaritas! All in all, Mestizo is a winner in my books. They've got Mole, Enchiladas and Tamales......i'm sold! read more

I was excited when one of Mr. Snarky's friends invited us to a birthday dinner at Mestizo. I was more excited when I saw that they had special menus for those with dietary restrictions, including Lactose Intolerance! That's awesome! While there are brightly coloured decorations, I think the dark walls and the dimmed lighting mute the decorations a bit. The staff seemed a bit confused about our reservations so we ended up just perching at the bar and having drinks until the person who coordinated the reservation arrived. The bar is at the back with a few seats, but you get the feeling that the area doesn't really get used that often. There were about 15 of us arriving at different times and all standing at the bar having drinks. It is a bit cozy with that many people, mostly because there are also tables just opposite the bar. They do have a lovely selection of tequila. No Jose Cuervo here! I decided to have a drink called the Don Roberto with tequila, grapefruit juice, Campari, even black pepper. It was delicious and the tequila they used was really smooth. Eventually the staff seated us at the tables next to the bar. Good call. We did notice there were other large groups dining at the same time. Clearly a place for groups to gather, but it does get loud and the staff are a bit disorganized with the groups. In fact, I thought the staff were a bit rude with our group. I get it is difficult to wait on a large group, but we're still paying customers. There was some confusion over starters and the lady had mentioned that not many people had ordered starters so they would bring them out at the same time as the mains. Because of that, Mr. Snarky and I decided not to order a starter... we also thought that maybe we wouldn't need a starter because we always end up so full at Mexican restaurants. While there weren't many people that ordered starters, they did bring them out ahead of mains which meant those of us that were really hungry and didn't order starters had to wait until they had finished their starters. When the mains did start to come out, things got more chaotic as one of the staff was yelling at other staff, trying to direct the orders. It looked like everyone got the correct order and the food looked really delicious. We did notice that on the menu it mentions that you can choose from rice, beans, sauteed potatoes, or steamed veg with the mains, but they didn't ask us what our preference was. It was lucky for me and Mr. Snarky as we got rice and beans. Unfortunately for Mr. Snarky it wasn't refried pinto beans, it was black beans that were a bit soupy. Some people seemed to enjoy what they were having, particularly the people who ordered the Mestizo Bowl for two, but Mr. Snarky and I found our mains quite bland. I had the Chile Relleno with the spiced beef (there was also some veg like peas, potatoes, raisins). Surprisingly, I didn't taste any of the Poblano Chile and the spiced beef wasn't very spicy. The rice was bland, but made a bit better by mixing it with the black beans. There was a red sauce on my plate, however, it was difficult to scrape some up to put on the chile or the rice as it looked like it may have just been for decoration. Mr. Snarky had the Enchilada Rojas as he was looking for something familiar, but after he took the first bite, I could see the disappointment on his face. After the second bite he said that it was very bland. I always find it difficult to understand how Mexican food can be bland... it is full of chiles and spices and I expect it to be a fiesta in my mouth. Another reviewer mentioned how they have never paid so much for Mexican food and left hungry, I would agree that statement. We were so hungry that Mr. Snarky and I were trying to plan a getaway to get to one of the burrito places around London. We did order dessert, Mr. Snarky asked about the Strawberry Tamal, but the waiter couldn't tell him what it was nor did he try to find out. Based on the fact that 'Tamal' looked a lot like 'Tamale', I told Mr. Snarky to expect something like that. And that is exactly what it was, a sweet tamale. It was ok, but it might not be to everyone's taste. I had the flan, which was nice, but lacking in caramel-y syrup. I noticed that everyone that got the cheesecake had a bite, but didn't finish them. If you have a birthday, watch out... you get cake, they sing, and there is a sombrero... however, there is also a shot of something and quite a violent shake as you are forced to take the shot. While it is entertaining to watch, our birthday boy did not seem to enjoy it and his neck was quite sore afterward. The atmosphere is great, especially for drinks and maybe for snacks before going out, but I'm not sure what I think about the place as a restaurant. It just seems like they might be trying to do too much instead of focusing on one aspect. read more

I came to know about Mestizo when i read a review praising it for its good and authentic Mexican food. Now i don't really put much value on the authenticity of the cuisine (as long as it tastes ok), but i decided nevertheless to give it a try. So the next day i made my friends get me here for my birthday dinner. The restaurant is located a bit off the beaten track ... about 5 minutes from Euston station. One wonders why they chose to open their business in an otherwise empty, residential area. But the location does not seem to deter customers. Even on a tuesday evening they were more than half full. The table organization at the place seemed a bit odd to me. The tables were packed closely together although there was quite a bit of empty space elsewhere in the hall. I started with the tamales. I had never tried these before ... and i guess boiled corn husk doesn't agree with me. I liked the fillings though. My friends ordered some spicy nachos and it certainly was one of the best nachos that i can remember. They had used a lot of cheese, which had made the nachos quite soggy ... just the way i like it. For the main course i had the "Mole huasteco". The dish comprised of chicken breast served with huasteco sauce (which tasted similar to, but better than, normal barbecue sauce) and rice and beans. This preparation was outstanding. I liked everything here ... the rice, the chicken, the beans and the sauce. Maybe it could have been a bit spicier, but i enjoyed what i got. The dish looked small, but was quite filling. The same held true for my friends' orders ... enchiladas with potato and cheese and "chile rellenos" (which was pepper stuffed with a variety of things, including courgette flour, corn and cheese). All the 3 main courses were came with beans and rice. A starter, a very filling main course, and a drink ... all these together cost us ~£20 per person. This isn't very cheap, but you get good value for what you pay. Will be back to try some more unusual mexican dishes here. read more

This is the one restaurant in London that I've visited the most. No exaggeration but I've probably been here x10 more than any other place! It is my go-to restaurant. The food and service are always great. The drinks are always great. This is authentic mexican food, in a friendly, family atmosphere. Native Angeleno from California here who was homesick for Mexican food. This place has the look of a Mexican restaurant but ultimately the food lacks in flavor. If you are looking for spicy salsa's get ready to be disappointed. Salsa tasted more like a dessert than hot. Service is greatly lacking, I thought if maybe i spoke Spanish my husband and i would get better service but that didn't seem to help a lot. Sadly, I booked a party of 22 on a Sunday, and rather than 'here are some free chips and salsa' or a drink, or whatever, as a thank you for booking a huge table, we got 'brunch is £24.99' when brunch is £19.99 - it is always £19.99, and there are signs all over saying it is that price. They decided to add a huge tip, £5.00, to each person's bill. I was pretty offended by that. We would have tipped anyway, but, £5.00 each for a £19.99 per person bill? Are you kidding me!? The food is good, but that was very uncool of them. I told the manager we refused to pay it, and we all gave £3.00 each to the server, not the manager, as we left. I'm sad, because I like the food. It isn't really possible to get very much OK Mexican in London. Once again mestizo did the trick! Went another time with my boyfriend because we were all "let's go there again cuz it's our spot now!" We had the shared special meal this time. Did not disappoint! It comes sizzling in a big pot that looks like a volcano. Everyone stared at our table...and I just sat smirking and sipping at my margarita! I think the 'specials' far outshine the regular mains dishes. Don't stray from the real deal here people..just get what they recommend as specials. During my time in London, it was so hard for me to find authentic and great Mexican food until I found Mestizo! I am from New York and have my certain spots already so I wanted one in London. I ordered their flautas and they were amazing! The best I've ever had from a restaurant! Their mole is absolutely delicious and you MUST order their tres leches cake! Had a great experience and hopefully will go back to this place when I go back to London! read more

I came here with a big group a couple of years ago and we were all really impressed by the authenticity and the value for money. I was excited to bring some of the last group plus a few new faces here, but unfortunately I can see things have changed a little bit. It's not the authenticity, everything still tastes great (hence the the stars). It's the value for money (hence the minus two stars). As examples, the amount of guacamole you get for £7.50 is quite wrong. The taco tray to share is a fantastic idea and without a doubt delicious, but four tacos for the price is a bad value main and not going to fill you up. Drinks are expensive too, on a par (and in most cases a little higher) with central London club prices. It pains me to say this but this is no longer my favourite Mexican place in London. read more
