I love this cute little spot! The guy that works there was a sweetheart. My husband wanted to take a break from walking and have some coffee. He ordered a espresso and I couldn't pass on the CREMA CATALANA. It was so creamy and delicious! He burnt the sugar right after I ordered. The service was great and very quick. The store is small and cozy and makes you want to spend some time there reading a book and enjoying some coffee. After you order you can go sit down and they'll prepare your order and bring it to your table and you can pay later. Definitely will come back here whenever I'm back in Barcelona. read more

Probably my favorite cafe in Barcelona. The coffee was so good, and the gentleman behind the counter was extremely welcoming and shared the history of the shop. We went 2x during our visit. I'd highly recommend for the historic setting and good, smooth coffee. The churros were tasty, but I don't recommend the croissants. I'm used to French-style and they like them more burnt and lacking salt... or butter... lacking something... (this seemed true throughout the city, not just this cafe). This place is cozy, cute and has all the charm that you want from something in the gothic district. Totally worth stopping for a pint or cava. Big fan of the olives... but I'm an olive freak. Staff was friendly and worked with my bad Spanish. read more

This is one of my favorite cafes in Barcelona!! This is supposed to be one of the oldest cafes in Barri Gotic and you can feel the history the moment you step in. You feel like you were transported back in time! The decor is the most charming part of this place. I usually come here for my cafe con leche and xocolata amb xurros (2.90 euros), they are made just the way I like!!!! Rico rico!!! Quick service and very modestly priced considering the location and the cafe's historic atmosphere. It's tiny but perfectly formed.

Some nights you just want beer, chocolate, and churros--DO NOT JUDGE ME. We lost a day of our trip and had to do all of Barcelona in ONE FREAKING DAY. It can be done but you hit the ground at 9 a.m., jet-lag be damned, and you do not stop until Barcelona does. BTW, Barcelona stops at about 5 a.m. the next day. Close to midnight, you need a snack. Meson del Cafe delivers with cold Spanish beer, cups of thick hot chocolate (not Swiss Miss), and warm churros covered with sugar and cinnamon. I cannot speak to the dinner menu, but I was damn happy with my order. Service was fantastic. They were busy and they were still gracious, like I was a guest in their home. And the location is perfect, smack dab in the middle of the Gothic District. Place is super cozy and very pretty. We relaxed and enjoyed an hour break and then jumped back into the nightlife! read more

This was one of the first places we stopped to eat at while we were in Barcelona. We had a beer and chorizo bocadillo. It was absolutely delicious! The bread was perfect, nice crunch on the outside and soft inside. The chorizo was nothing like we've had here in the USA, full of flavor and the right amount to hold us over until our next stop. We followed our meal and drinks up with some coffee, small but powerful! I believe we paid less than ten euros for everything. It's a small place, been there for decades and exactly what we were looking for. We were trying to avoid the tourist places and stick to the local authentic spots. read more

Currently my favorite Tapas bar anywhere. Simple, small, no menus and no english tourist signage. Great ambiance and near everything. Avoid the tourist junk - come to this restaurant. Extremely friendly staff. However this is not the place to go of you expect english, menus and a rushed experience. Cheap with gorgeous foods and great coffee. I have eaten here many times over the past few months and can't reconcile a review saying it was a tourist trap. I can't help but wonder if somewhere else was being refered to. Quaint decor and friendly staff make this an excellent spot for some caffeinated refreshment. This cafe was essentially across the street from our hotel so we were here quite a few times in the AM. Coffee was very solid, and the pastries were good to boot. Pretty inexpensive as well. read more

Tourist Trap! Stay away from the restaurant! The place looks nice and tempting to enter, but that's it. There is no menu or price for anything, just several pre-prepared dishes to choose from, the waiter simply says to choose what you want without getting a price. We took a few dishes, that served in small plates with very little food, but in the end there is a big surprise! The price was not less than a good meal at a good restaurant. Just avoid this restaurant and go somewhere else! read more

We were seduced by the charming decor of this little cafe and decided to walk in for a little snack after a long walk in the city. Inside it's intimate, cosy and warm. It looked like a family-run business and the service was friendly enough. We ordered three dishes and a dessert from the tapas bar (codfish, eggplant, fried potatoes and creme catalana) three glasses of wine and a beer. There was no price list or menu. Normally I would ask for the price of the dish before ordering but as I don't speak Spanish, my travelling companion did the ordering. HUGE mistake. The dishes were underwhelming to say the least. All three savoury dishes arrived like a pile of mushy, wet mess; they were obviously microwaved. The codfish had the texture of mashed potatoes. The eggplant was just a thin slice of fried eggplant with melted cheese on top. The potatoes were unmemorable. The creme catalana, which is the Spanish version of creme brulee, is basically a sweet custard with undissolved sugar granules, like creme brulee without the nice crunchy layer of caramel on top. Now, having travelled across Spain (south, west and north) and tasted plenty of tapas for the past month, I know that it's common to reheat tapas in the oven and most of the reheated tapas we had were quite acceptable. But these ones are atrociously inedible and sad. To top it off, the bill came to Eur 39.45, the most we have paid by far for the worst tapas, and upon closer inspection, the server (whom I suspect is also the owner) had the audacity to charge us Eur 10.00 for that pathetic thin slither of fried eggplant. Yes, Eur 10.00! We were furious. I confronted him in English and he actually spoke a little English. He shrugged, demanded that that was the price set by the boss, and that he wasn't the boss, and there was nothing he could do about it. But when he came back to give us the change, he had deducted Eur 2.00 from our bill, obviously out of guilt. If he wasn't the owner, he wouldn't have the authority to do that. Lesson learned for us. Congratulations, you've lost four customers forever and hopefully more. Hope it was worth the profit you made from us. read more

We loved everything about Meson Del Cafe--the ambiance, delicious food and experiencing a locals' tapas bar, was really fun. We found Meson our second day in Barcelona and made sure to find it again our last day! Things we tried and liked were the tomato, cucumber, octopus salad, calamari, paella, and of course, the fantastic Sangria, but it was all good. If you are up for some tasty, fun food and a authentic tapas bar atmosphere, stop in and relax. We had no problem communicating with the staff. read more

Avoid! Overpriced gross food, no prices, unfriendly staff. "Tapas" are mostly fried items, microwaved when you choose them, subsequently soggy and inedible.
