**Review for Citizen Café, Barcelona - June 5, 2024** I had a delightful lunch at Citizen Café today. The service was excellent, adding to the overall pleasant experience. I ordered the cheeseburger with homemade fries and the pastrami with homemade fries, accompanied by an orange juice and an Americano. Both meals were fantastic, and the fries tasted exceptionally fresh. The lunchtime ambiance was perfect, creating a relaxed yet vibrant atmosphere. The breakfast menu also looked fun and enticing, making me eager to return. Citizen Café is definitely a spot worth visiting for a great meal and a welcoming environment. Great spot for American and Canadian travelers! Though the kitchen closes from 5 PM until dinner, their breakfast is amazing. I tried the pancake tower--thick, lightly glazed with maple syrup, and served with scrambled eggs (or a fried egg, if you prefer) and real American bacon. A cozy little place tucked away in the Gothic District. Don't let their menu fool you. They have enough variety to satisfy carnivores and vegans alike. I was just getting off of a 7 hour flight from NY and was very hungry I looked up breakfast in my maps and saw the pictures of Citizen Cafes food and new exactly where I was going. They were very nice and hospitable. Their attitudes definitely added to the nice atmosphere that was created. Play ended up ordering the "pancake platter," which was three pancakes and in between the pancakes what is a layer of bacon in a layer of eggs. Not sure why this place is so highly rated. We had poor service and mediocre food. It was nice that they had gluten free bread but their avocado stack has two slices of toast and only one poached egg. When we asked for a second poached egg, it took over 25 min by which time my toast was already soggy. Huevos rancheros we're too tomatoey and didn't have enough beans or flavor, the veggie burger was meh, pretty flavorless and pink but French fries were good. I was not impressed with my experience here. The place is SO LOUD, I could barely hear my dining companion. The service was minimal and the food was just not special. I tried the granola bowl and it was topped with so much honey, it was almost hard to eat. They have a few bar seats and then a bunch of tables inside, no outdoor seating. read more

Interior: this was cute, service was quick for a Friday morning. Chai latte: this was nice and warm and has that Indian chai spice that I enjoy. Ceviche: this was very refreshing and tasted amazing. The lime juice on the seafood was the perfect amount and just tasted amazing. Pancake platter: this was nothing special. They give you a small amount of syrup and the pancakes are really thick so for us we needed more syrup. I will say that the bacon was crispy and tasted great but next time I'll probably just get the bacon. ChilaQuiles: Was not a fan of this. For me the chips on top were extremely hard. Oh my gosh. I wish I could give this place over 5 stars. Everything was phenomenal! We found this place for brunch and came back several times on our trip to Barcelona. I was so excited for this place, unfortunately the service and food both fell flat. The setup inside is really different and fun. Set the mood for a great meal, however things went downhill after that. My wife and I both ordered waters and drinks. Our waters took about 10 minutes. My drink came 5 minutes later. Then my wife's drink came at the same time as our food, about 20 minutes after being seated. On top of that hers was warm. Our food also took some time, which I am always fine with if it is still good, but this was not. I went with the cheeseburger, as many reviews had talked about how good it was. It was one of the worst burgers I have had in a long time. At first I blamed myself for ordering a burger in a place that may not do them as they are in America, however after this experience I had burgers at other places in Spain that were incredible. The meat this place uses seemed frozen. It was not even close to being cooked to my request of medium. As the picture shows it was just a gross looking piece of meat. My husband and I came here for breakfast on one of our last days in Barcelona. It was nice they had so many different breakfast places in the area. The vibe is very much like a rustic cafe. The decor is nice with books and they even have a bike on the wall. When we walked in on a Wednesday morning, we were seated promptly at a table. I ordered an iced latte right away. It was smooth, cool, and refreshing. I was loving the iced lattes in Barcelona. For my breakfast, I got the brekkie bagel with smoked crispy bacon. This is a breakfast sandwich with scrambled eggs, cream cheese, greens, and your choice of flavor combination (I chose crispy bacon) all on a toasted bagel. It was delicious. It was our last night in Barcelona, and we had reached the finale of an extraordinary week. By this point, Jamie W. and I were a bit fried from not only walking the city every day but also taking a side trip to the Basque country. We didn't want to venture too far from our hotel in L'Eixample and focused on the choices to be found around nearby Plaça d'Urquinaona. There was paella, tapas, and even pub grub in an Irish bar, but we landed here when it turned out the Mediterranean place we were looking for was replaced by this casual American-style spot a month prior. We already had our quota of Spanish-accented gluttony, so something familiar sounded OK to us. I knew we were taking a chance since they were just starting to get their groove with the food, but we decided what the hell since we didn't want to overindulge for our last meal. Of course I spoke too soon since Jamie didn't hesitate to order the 10.80€ Nachos Pulled Pork which featured not only corn chips and pork but also melted cheddar cheese, jalapeños, sour cream, pico de gallo, and their housemade guacamole (photo: http://bit.ly/2kQvRDD). That was one big platter of food, but luckily Jamie picked around it and avoided most of the pulled pork which from the small bite I had, tasted quite tender and moist. The rest of the plate was standard Cal-Mex that could have been found at a Chevy's. It was pretty decent but nothing outstanding, something closer in quality to a dinner at Marie Callender's. We were tempted by the half-dozen homemade desserts they had on the menu, but we wisely passed to give us enough time and energy to pack for our journey home. When we travel to a new city, we tend to find a spot that becomes our "go-to" for a consistently delicious meal. Well, that might be an understatement for Citizen Cafe, as we found ourselves here SIX times in the four days we stayed in Barcelona. This service is very friendly and quick, the cafe is accomodating and the food is clean and exceptional. We found ourselves here everyday for breakfast and tried almost everything besides the eggs benedict (which looked delicious but we weren't craving) and even found our way here for a dinner and quick lunch. We enjoyed the counter seating during our breakfasts: you get a great show as the baristas meticulously craft their beverages, the cooks prepare your food to order, and a staff member seemingly dedicated to preparing the acai and chia bowls (which are delicious and light). We were fortunate enough to be staying within a short walk to Citizen Cafe, but I have a feeling we would've been there just as often even if it required more of a trek.
