Mayflower via Metcalf moved me from Minneapolis to Houston during Hurricane Harvey. The estimator was friendly and thorough, answering all of my questions and reassuring me along the way. The bid was binding which also left me feeling like I wouldn't get the old bait and switch. The driver and his loaders (2) were careful and cautious with my belongings. I packed all of my items with the exception of larger furniture items. So they just needed to put them in the truck. It took a little less than 8 hrs to load my 3 bedroom home. The driver had great communications along the way. Harvey was predicted to hit the day my possessions were to arrive. So the driver called and kept me informed that he wasn't allowed to enter Houston because of flooding. As soon as the weather cleared he delivers the goods on a Sunday, no less. The local unloading team (2) was efficient and professional. It took them about 4.5 hours to unload. No damage to the house. NO damage, nothing missing no banged up boxes. Everything was done well. I would absolutely recommend Metcalf for long distance move!! read more

We hired Metcalf for our recent move including packing and unpacking. Unfortunately we wete highly disappointed. For one, they charged us $2000 more than the estimate. We were told they try and get the estimate within 10% yet this is a 30% increase. We specifically requested an in person walk through ( versus a remote walk though) so they could actually see what needed to be moved to aid them in giving us an accurate estimate . A slight adjustment is to be expected but $2000 is extreme. It is not our fault they miscalculated. We would've gone with a different mover if Metcalf quoted us as much as they are charging now. It makes it seem as if they under bid to secure the job and then charge far more afterwards. Additionally, when we walked through the house after they packed it, several drawers in the kitchen had been left unpacked and totally full. Storage in the family room built in still had items in it. Also, we have missing items including fine dining silver (a wedding gift) and jewelry among other items. Lastly, one of the movers became very argumentative with us after he ripped up the plastic floor protector and refused to put it back down even though they were still moving boxes into the house. Even the other movers were confused by this man's behavior- it was very strange and totally inappropriate. On the plus side, most of the movers were very nice and hard working. The 2 gentlemen who came to unpack were exceedingly nice, worked hard and had great attitudes. Again, the list of the items which may not be replaceable is making this move very difficult. Moving is hard enough as it is, there shouldn't be major issues like these from a company that charges thousands of dollars to supposedly make your move easier . We cannot in good faith, and would not recommend Metcalf Moving and Storage. read more

Ryan took the initial survey and he was great, friendly, and professional. The day of the move there were two movers - one tall guy and another shorter guy. I never got their names. The tall guy was overall very abrasive from the start, while the short guy was always really friendly. One of the first things the tall guy said was that we wouldn't make the estimated time and he didn't understand how it was determined, etc... (spoiler: we made time). While moving, I heard a loud noise, like something falling down all the stairs. I asked if something broke and they said "nope, nothing broke." (See attached picture, showing broken piece off of an expensive table). When we finished moving to the new place, I tip handsomely (as I always do) and that did seem to change the tall guy's demeanor. read more

We moved on short notice and Metcalf was the only mover that could handle all of our needs. The estimator (Aaron) that came to our house was very professional, sociable and friendly. He did a great job of listening to us, explaining the process and answering all of our questions. The estimate was very reasonable. Aaron also did a great job of updating us on the status of our paperwork. The customer service rep from Metcalf also did a great job of updating us on the status of our loads (we had a vehicle that had to be shipped separately from the rest of our belongings). I have no complaints about the office staff at Metcalf, they were fantastic! The packers that came were interesting to say the least. One smelled of alcohol both days he was at our house. His methodology in packing boxes was questionable at best. Items were mixed between rooms and the labeling of the boxes had little to do with the contents. The other must have been paid by the number of sheets of packing paper he used. He was overly cautious, which was fine. Our possessions all went to the Metcalf warehouse as there were no large trucks available at the time. At the warehouse there was some repacking of some of our items (I'm guessing to tighten the load up for easier movement). The load arrived 6 days after the guaranteed window, which Mayflower compensated us for. During the unpacking we found many items were damaged (mostly due to poor packing). Mayflower sent out a rep to evaluate the damage and compensated us for that as well. Metcalf was great to work with, just keep an eye on the packers. Horrible experience. Showed up late for both pickup and delivery and did not have enough crew to do the job on either end. Broke several items. Their replacement value guarantee is a total fraud. They will only pay you for your original purchase price, if you kept your purchase receipt. With antiques and older furniture, etc. you are out of luck. If they lose the item in transit, you get zero. They lost several boxes of items of ours. We suspect they were stolen by employees. We received nothing in compensation. read more

Moving is expensive, and I am convinced the move with Metcalf was worth the price. On both ends of the move, the company was responsive, professional, and on time. This was my second cross-country move with Metcalf, so I am a believer. Most companies I explored either could not do what Metcalf did or were non-responsive. I only wish there were more stars to give the entire team who helped our family move 2,000 miles and ensured it was a positive experience. From the gent (Steve) who assessed how much space we needed and made sure there was enough room on the truck and the timing would work to our coordination efforts by (Donnet) for full communication down to our truck driver (Dean) - they all did an amazing job. Especially Dean and his teams on both sides handling our worldly possessions. We are the nit picky people who obsess on every tiny detail and I am here to tell you this is the company to hire if you are making the long distance move. They are not the cheapest option, but they are worth every assurance and the professionalism they brought to our experience. I'm former military and have moved many times. My pregnant wife and I went with Metcalf (Mayflower) because we believed they were trustworthy and competent. We know Metcalf isn't the cheapest but we wanted the peace of mind and a higher level of customer service. Wow, did we make a mistake! We had our belongings picked up and stored until we could acquire our new home in another state. On August 29th, 2014, I notified Metcalf that we were ready to have our goods taken out of storage and shipped to our new address. I was told by email the earliest a truck could be acquired was Sept 8th (10 days later). We were also given a delivery range of Sept 13th to Sept 26th (15 to 28 days after notification). I was unhappy about this but was led to believe a truck would be picking up our stuff on the 8th of September which would likely make the delivery closer to the 13th rather than the 26th. On Sept 8th our belongings were not picked up. Upon calling Metcalf, I was told that the goods were not being picked up on the 8th but instead were being "registered". What does that mean and why does it take 10 days to register the load? At this point, I called customer service to complain. The woman I spoke with was extremely apathetic. She didn't care that I was led to believe that my goods would be picked up on the 8th. She said the delivery range was Sept 13-26 and given that it wasn't the 26th yet, I had nothing to complain about. By the way, I had no choice as to the delivery time window. It is now Sept 17th (19 days since I notified Metcalf to take our stuff out of storage and ship it to us). My wife went into labor a few days ago and we have a beautiful baby boy. Unfortunately, Metcalf has yet to pick up our belongings. We have a mattress and a pack n' play for furniture. That's it! It's obvious that Metcalf could have found a truck to move our goods by now. Given that we only moved from a two bedroom, our shipment will not fill a big rig. I suspect, Metcalf is holding out to see if a semi-full truck already headed in that direction or back to Minnesota materializes before it commits a completely empty trailer to moving our relatively small load. That's certainly not the high level of service pitched to me prior to our commitment to go with Metcalf. I can understand trying to be efficient but Metcalf has gone too far. Furthermore, I originally asked if Mayflower owned its trucks. I was told unequivocally, yes. Later, when it was too late to find another mover, I was told that the drivers actually own the trucks. When I called customer service, I was given a confusing answer that sounded like a banker trying to explain mortgage derivatives. We continue to wait and wait and wait for our stuff. If we had known to expect this substandard level of customer service we would have gone with a mover that was at least cheaper. read more

Terrible. Acts as a third party mover for mayflower. Picked up our belongings and neglected to tell us during the quote that they were having problems getting truckers to move our things across country. Still neglected to tell us this fact until after they picked up our belongings, so everything was in limbo. They wanted to deliver in the only window when we were not available, even though it was expressed prior to pickup that we would not be there to receive our things. Because of this, they claimed not to have to refund any money as their contract states. Their "fix" was not to charge us for holding our things longer than the delivery window. They got their money and tried to make us think we should be thanking them for not charging us more for storage. I paid them nearly $12K for them to fumble our things around so much that a bunch of things were broken. 100% would never use these people if you like good value, your belongings intact, and your sanity in place. read more

I used Metcalf for a move within the same zip code in Minneapolis last weekend and had a very good experience. They were on time, fast, professional, and did some creative problem solving to get furniture through some tight spaces. No damage on anything. I have never posted a review on Yelp but after considering this for a long time I have decided to review Metcalf Moving. At the end of 2018 I was in MN to pack up a family member's apartment & storage space to move it across the country to the NE. The items to be moved were either of high sentimental importance or of high value. Metcalf was very sloppy that it appeared outrageous to the movers on the receiving end of this move. They taped the top of a wood end table with shell inlay, to the legs to secure it with thin brown packing tape which then would pull the finish & tiling off it. The manager of this move should have put it in a box wrapped in cushion -- it's not large. He told me it was fine & I took his word for it, only to learn at the receiving end by other movers (more professional ones) that this was very lazy/unprofeesional of Metcalf. The manager was very chatty with me the whole time his staff were moving everything into the truck, leaving no one to watch what his staff were doing. Many of my boxes were missing including items insured as high value. They actually lost an entire 4.5 crate of bone china & 3 boxes of writing sketch books & supplies. I was also reminded later, by other movers, who saw how Metcalf packed my things that NOTHING which should have been wrapped in blankets was wrapped. This includes glass, metal & wood furniture. Earlier in the process the sales rep, during the pricing & estimate phases, was irritable & snapped at me a many times. Later I contacted Metcalf to report the missing items and their investigation came up with zero. Well..... Metcalf knows must know what happened to my missing boxes but they will not cough them up. The furniture arrived on time (in Las Vegas from Forest Lake MN). The moving coordinator had estimated a little too much for the move (because I decided not to move some items at the last minute) The estimated weight was for 14,700 LB at an up-front cost of $10,000 of which I had to pay 110% upon drop off at the destination. But then they analyzed the before and after weigh station tickets (both done on the day of the move), my stuff weighed "only" 10,900 LB. Within a few weeks after delivery, a refund check arrived in the mail just as promised for over $3,000 but I can't remember the exact amount. The estimator also arranged for me to pick up a variety of different sized (slightly used) moving boxes, wardrobe boxes, artwork boxes, a half dozen rolls of shipping tape and a huge pile of new, thin wrapping paper a few days before the move. There was no extra charge for this and although I didn't think it a big deal at the time, they were a lifesaver. I later sold them for $40 on Craigslist to a Vegas resident who was moving to Michigan. The lady was greatly relieved to get them from me and also deemed them a lifesaver, her words. My son, who moved to Vegas from MN 7 years ago had a much worse experience with his (different) mover. They promised a week to get there but his stuff didn't arrive for six weeks. Much of the stuff on the truck was personal AND business so his nationwide business came to a near standstill as he waited for the copy machine, computers, etc. to arrive! "Doug Casper," my driver, did a great job. He gave me his cell phone # before arriving at my house in MN so I had it for the entire duration. I tried not to bug him but I did call him 2-3 times during the move. Thus I always knew where he was (and knew that he was driving a little out of the way to pick up another partial load in Iowa and drop it off in AZ before he would continue on to NV with my stuff), and I would get an updated ETA which gave me great comfort even though the ETA remained the same as originally projected. I was also able to give him direct instructions on the best way to approach my house in Las Vegas. In addition to driving the semi, Doug helped load and unload the truck himself . . . so probably wasn't a Teamster! He and the movers took down beds and the entertainment center and reassembled everything at the destination in the rooms I pointed to. Although I hired Metcalf, they have some sort of alliance with Mayflower so the moving van had the Mayflower name written in huge letters the length of the truck. But Doug didn't work for either Metcalf or Mayflower. Instead, he worked for a third company based in IA. They basically have one driver and then they assemble a crew of local furniture movers at each end. Both crews were great. They were careful, respectful, efficient, and kept working until the truck was loaded (or unloaded) without taking a lunch break or anything. read more

Mayflower moved me from St. Paul, MN to Los Angeles in September. They made the whole experience incredibly easy. The representative that gave me the quote was professional and the cost was the lowest of 3 companies that I contacted. The crew doing the pickup was amazing and very careful with my furniture and boxes. A representative from Mayflower stayed in contact with me through the whole process. I never felt disconnected. The crew that delivered my household belongings was extremely high quality. And I got a refund because the estimated weight was a little high! I highly recommend this company. read more

I met with 3 different vendors to discuss our move from WI to NC. We had a 4BR home in WI and moved to a 4BR home in NC. I decided on Metcalf due to the price and the availability of the sales consultant. I know I made the right decision. Aaron was very helpful, professional and honest. His quote was very accurate and there were no hidden charges once our items reached NC. The driver and crew were extremely professional and empathetic - I was still working full-time, have a 3 year old and we still had work to do when the truck came to load our items. NOTHING was damaged or missing. The driver said we would get our items at 8am on Monday and sure enough, he was backing into the driveway at 7:55am. read more

We recently moved to our new house in Blaine MN from Saint Paul. We worked with Aaron Archbold who helped us with two pods that we rented and had delivered to the new house, and also coordinated a move from a storage shed to the house. The quote we were given was reasonable, given the amount of stuff we had and the time that would be involved. The driver that delivered the pods, Mark, was great. Not only did he deliver the pods to the house, but he also helped us unload the items into the garage. Mark A. returned the next day with Dylan to deliver our furniture and bring it into the house. These guys did a great job bringing the furniture into the house. My wife and I were extremely pleased with the work they did; both were very professional and nothing was damaged. They made sure to protect the floors and carpet when they brought the furniture in. We have never used professional movers before and this was a great first experience for us and worth the money as we would never have been able to the furniture up a flight of stairs without some sort of issue. Wow- just when I thought it could not get any worse, they outdo themselves! Our stuff arrived late, and with over $5,000 worth of damage- stained, dirty & broken, including furniture that was made by family members who have passed away. Truly, do not trust anything important or of sentimental value to this company! Now, beyond all that- they want to charge us almost $2,000 MORE because THEY messed up the estimate of our items- the estimate we relied on when choosing their company, and passing up other national competitors. All in all- they want to charge us $11,000 to move and destroy our belongings. (Items we have had other national companies move before for much less, much faster.) They do not care about customers- likely they rely on the high rate of transition in town, so they tell customers whatever sounds good to get their business and then treat them poorly once they have it. The national customer service line for the company has been helpful in holding this local office accountable, and has tried to assure us this is NOT the standard the company strives for, but unfortunately, it is what we have experienced. Do yourselves a favor- choose someone, anyone, else! read more

If you are moving across country to or from the Twin Cities, Metcalf is a good choice. They are a small business, but as a Mayflower affiliate they can coordinate with drivers and moving companies on the other end. The teams they hire do things professionally, and they can pack as well as move your things. They keep you updated as to where your stuff is, and you can generally expect them to arrive within 2 weeks of the move out date. (They use semis that pick up multiple loads, so typically they don't go directly from your old place to your new place - this lowers the cost considerably.) Last time we hired them I can't think of a single item that was broken or lost, and they are careful not to damage furniture/walls/floors while they move. Plus, they were able to pack and move us out in 1 day! read more

Metcalf helped us on our move from Plymouth, MN to San Antonio, TX. They took great care of us and our belongings. Everything was so ridiculously easy. We just packed our own belongings, they took apart our furniture, boxed our mattress, wrapped our couches, and then loaded everything up. It was really efficient. The process took no more than 2 hours. The team that loaded us was crazy hardcore. All business and high energy and really nice. We had a leisurely drive down to Texas. Then a different team unloaded us, put the boxes in the correct rooms, reassembled our furniture, unwrapped the couches, and they were off. Great people as well. Overall I was really really impressed. Ron, the estimator was pretty much spot on with the weight estimate. The office was constantly in touch and keeping me updated on the status of my delivery. It was all delivered well within the time frame also. Not a single thing was broken including the motorcycle they shipped with out stuff. I couldn't have asked for a better experience. read more

I was very disappointed to hear that Metcalf would not do an in-state move for less than 5000 pounds of furniture and belongings. I had used Metcalf twice before, and in fact Metcalfe kept the 2600 pounds of furniture in storage with them for over a year. When it came time to move it from Rochester to Minneapolis the estimate could not be done without a weight of 5000 pounds. I received quotes from two other companies, and both were based on time and distance--and did not have a weight minimum--and came out more than $600 less. It's a pity because I had felt confident because the other moves with Metcalf had been smooth--but at this point I have no confidence in Metcalf. I think they see a fancy address and raise the price. read more

Even with well over a month notice, no driver was assigned to our account so items put into storage until they eventually were put into pods and transported - at different times - from MN to CA. They had audacity to tell me they were storing them for free. Extra moves and storage caused many things to be damaged and water damage from where they stored them. Now we have to wait 2 weeks for an adjuster to even start our damage claim; while my son still doesn't have a bed because they destroyed his. No accountability on part of this company. read more

Metcalf Moving is awesome! I just moved from Minnesota to Texas and was so impressed with the whole process. It was seamless and stress free from beginning to end! I have moved 14 times in the last decade. This was the first time I've had a company pack my belongings and it was well worth the cost. Aaron, the rep from Metcalf, came to my apt to give me a quote base on my items. He was thorough and answered all my questions that morning and then responded to any calls and/or emails within a day but usually within a few hours. Aaron was very helpful and adjusted the quote several times without hesitation as I added or removed items. When it came time to move, my personal belongings were treated with care, packed in an organized manner, and the team who packed the apartment was fast, efficient, and friendly! I continuously received phone calls from the team lead at the office to insure things were going smoothly and according to plan. I can't say enough positive things about the move. We could not be happier with every part of our Mayflower experience. We moved from Saint Paul, MN to Ann Arbor, MI during the summer of 2015. Steve, who came to our home and provided our estimate, was courteous, honest, and a pleasure to work with prior to moving day. Our weight estimate ended up a little lower than the actual weight (as shown on the truck weighing sheets, of which I was provided a copy), but because they provide binding estimates I was not liable for the additional cost. This was not the case with another company who had given us an estimate. Donnet in the office was prompt in calling to provide information about the actual days and times of our move and to follow up on our experience. Parker (driver), Walter, and Bill were amazing. They kept in touch throughout the move, and moved our belongings faster and safer than I realized was possible. This was our first time using professional movers and I will not hesitate to do it again. Knowing where all of our belongings were every step of the way, watching the careful and deliberate way that everything was handled, and knowing that everything made it to our new home in the same condition it left our old one was worth the extra expense.
