MetLife customer service is the worst. They will not call you back. Employees do not do their job. There is no accountability.

Do not take a short term disability insurance with this provider. They silently sneak in emails with their other promotion emails for obtaining your statement of health form during Christmas holidays which a user may hardly see and respond to. When it's time for claim, they say they don't even underwrite the policy since we did not provide the form. I missed my short term disability benefit due to this act and I am not eligible for the next year as well since the event is already occurred . I spoke to 7 customer service agents only to be transferred back and forth and finally my employer explained the denial of benefits to me . July 4, 2024 RE: Grievance Against MetLife Claims Agent and Delayed Processing of Maternity Leave Claim Claim # 292405148535 & 292403156613 I am writing to file a formal grievance against MetLife, specifically my assigned claims agent, due to the grossly unprofessional, negligent, and delayed handling of my maternity leave claim. This delay has caused significant financial hardship for my family during an already challenging time. This has created an unnecessary burden of emotional distress. On May 16, 2024, I gave birth to my first child. Due to medical complications, my labor was induced, and I required close monitoring and bed rest for the following four weeks. This prevented me from fully bonding with my newborn during those crucial early weeks. Before my induction, I spoke with a MetLife representative who informed me that I would need to submit two separate claims: one for the four weeks of medically necessary leave and another for the standard 12 weeks of parental leave. I promptly had my doctor complete both forms and submitted them to MetLife. In early June, I contacted MetLife for a status update. I was informed that my claim had been approved, and my return to work date was September. However, when I received no direct deposits for over a month, I contacted MetLife again. To my dismay, I was told that my claim was still being processed. MetLife needs to address the severe deficiencies in its customer service system. Customers should not have to endure such frustration and delays when seeking the benefits they are entitled to. This back-and-forth continued for WEEKS. I was repeatedly promised callbacks that never came, and my requests to speak with a manager were ignored. Finally, I received a letter stating that only my parental leave through August had been approved, with no mention of my medically necessary leave. I still need to be paid. Your website states, "A disability can completely change every aspect of your life, but that shouldn't mean that it threatens your financial stability," but the actions of Metlife are finding it hard for me to believe this. My attempts to resolve this issue directly with MetLife have been fruitless. My calls and requests to speak with leadership have been ignored. My claims agent, Luis Marte, has not responded to my calls, voicemails, and emails. I have not once spoken to them. I have been given the runaround by customer service representatives who are unable or unwilling to help. The letter says to call customer service, but they simply redirected me and promised callbacks. I've spent HOURS on the phone with no resolution. My claims agent should be held accountable on both the state and company levels for their negligence and unprofessionalism. MEDLIFE metropolitan tower life insurance is a company that is not very efficient, caring and has some rude employees. If anyone complains by letters or phone calls it gets dismissed. 3 times I was told I was deceased. Company blamed it on S. S. Then I made the effort to contact S. S. The Metropolitan Insurance lied! it was them all along that reported to my bank that I was deceased. I have been out if work for over 2 months because of a knee injury that has left me unable to put any weight in my left leg. I contacted met life, filed a claim, that was the easy part. I have only received two checks, that equal out to $117, every time I call or email or whatever, I am told my claims and documents (22) pages) are still under review. I never talk to the same person, my claims rep is names Andrea C, and she has contacted 1 time. I am always told everything is pending. Then why did I get 2 payment and it stopped? I cannot get a straight answer from anyone at met life. My doctors have do e everything they can, filled out allof the forms etc. My bills are all over due. One star is TOO kind to give to this company. I wonder if they are hiring because I would LOVE to work somewhere and collect a paycheck where I get to sit at home and not actually work or return ANY phone calls. I have never and I mean NEVER, been forced to work with a bigger group of INCOMPETENT AND LAZY so called "professionals" than at MetLife. They ignore every single phone call request you put in, all while holding your paperwork and not processing it. I have never dealt with a company as incompetent as MetLife. It's almost as if they take pride in causing people more heartache than the stressful situation we are experiencing. Possibly the worst day of our lives. I've had to open a few claims this year. One because my husband is terminally ill. Another due to a personal injury. In both cases they claimed that they did not receive the faxes from our health care providers. When I called them out on it for the first claim they changed their answer to we didn't receive the pages in the middle of the paperwork that was sent. They also kept calling me at work wanting more and more information. But the real kicker was when I spoke to a representative "Barbara" and told her I was absolutely not signing their waiver for my HIPAA therefore giving them total access to my health records. And I was not answering their questions about how often this occurs, weekly, monthly, yearly. That they don't get to make health care decisions for me. That is between me and my physician. Barbara's response was well we won't pay you unless you do. Here's the thing Barbara you're not paying me anyway. I live in a state that I am paid through them. Also I am allowed to use my accrued sick time. I was only out for 5 work days. She then proceeded to tell me I would be fired. Sorry babe that's also not your decision. I will be submitting complaints about MetLife through the attorney general, and our insurance commissioner in my state as well as the BBB. read more

TL;DR Poor communication, slow to make claim determinations. If you want paid, you need to pester them to get any sort of movement. It's been almost a month of this and I still can't get paid. 6/22 - My original short-term disability claim ended. I saw my doctor this date and was determined that my time off should be extended until 7/11. 6/23 - Faxed doctor's note stating I need to remain off work until 7/11. Received confirmation notice that it went through successfully. 6/30 - My pay day - Was short over $1k due to extension not being approved. 7/3 - Emailed to follow up on the extension request. 7/6 - Sent a follow up email as I received no response. 7/7 - Received text confirmation that my doctor's office notes had been received and claim status was in review. 7/10 - Received phone call from MetLife claiming they did not receive any faxes and were contacting my doctor's office to send notes. 7/11 - Emailed my doctor's note stating I may return back to work on 7/12. 7/12 - I returned back to work. 7/13 - Received text stating (again) my notes were received and claim was under review. 7/18 - My HR reached out to me, asking if I have heard from MetLife as payroll runs next week and my check is looking to be short again. - Sent MetLife email asking for update since there had not been movement on my claim, per their website, since 6/26. - Called case manager and it went straight to voicemail. Left a voicemail. - Called main line to speak to any representative available. They viewed my case and confirmed they had everything they needed and "determinations should not take more than 5 business days" and would contact my case manager directly. 7/20 - Received text message stating the FMLA claim associated with my short-term disability claim was approved. However, my short-term disability claim was. still. pending. - Texted the number back (not even sure if they receive them) stating BOTH claims needed approved in order for me to get paid. - Sent follow up email. - Sent message through the MetLife website since my voicemails and emails were not being responded to. My disability is pregnancy related and I'm terrified that my maternity leave will also be a headache to get payment from. My employer uses them exclusively for all disability claims so I can't go elsewhere. This is exhausting. read more

So glad I have gotten in touch with the State of New Hampshire Division of Banking and Insurance ... Met Life continues to be ridiculous....their latest request from me was that they wanted a list of information and when I called to inquire, I was told it was my responsibility to get it for them despite the medical release authorization forms that they had me sign so that they could get the info from the cancer center directly... Their grocery list of requested information included....no kidding for real!!!... copies of the doctors phone call records!. How does one procure a doctors private phone records..this was the first time I was requested to obtain phone records in all of 5 years...the hurdles get higher and higher as my illness and decline in health progresses..;yet another impossible hoop to jump so they can cancel my ongoing claim. When I asked them from what time period I was told ALL OF THEM !! When I attempted to give Courtney from Met Life the phone number of my oncologists so she could directly contact them she snottily told me "don't tell me how to do my job" I replied that I was just trying to give her the number to call to tell them what she needed because the requests in the letter were so vague and CINJ didn't know the dates for the information that they requested...I have been a cancer patient for 5 years now with the same doctors. Not knowing what to do and once again being threatened with discontinuation of payments I contacted the Dept of Banking and Insurance in the state that they administer the plan from and they took charge, contacted Met Life and lo and behold, a supervisor calls me and tells me nevermind... they knew they were harassing me and to push the envelope would invite an open investigation of illegal practices by the State Dept which they obviously don't want... Note my photos of a typical information request letter by these crooks and please forgive the notes that I wrote on the letter while trying to navigate this latest harassment Mind you that they have been paying me for five years now and this is their usual modus operandi to constantly twice sometimes three times or more a year updated request letters as my cancer has progressed to late stage 3 ... but they say that they only request yearly updates which is fair and reasonable but untrue as they have sent me requests for info 2 months after I send them updated info...they say they never got it which they did as I had to cc the banking and insurance dept when I sent it because I KNEW they would say that they never got it as this Courtney person claims. Courtney is my forth or fifth claims specialist in the past 5 years and I get the feeling that the new ones don't want to waste their time reading my lengthy claims file and find it easier to just call me up (In the middle of my weekly chemotherapy infusions) and harass me for the same information all over again because last December when they said they never got the 67 page medical report that I faxed to them, they miraculously found it after the Dept of Banking and Insurance contacted them yet again! And all of this for a less than $600 a month payout from them! I filed my claim April 2nd 2021 and it's June and nothing. I have called and sent messages countless times. My Doctor has faxed over information a half a dozen times. They always transfer you around when you call in. They tell you they will request your case manager to call your doctors office. They never call your Doctors office. I truly hope my employer and our 5000 plus employees drop Metlife and I'm going to certainly push for it if this isn't resolved. read more

If it were an option, I would give them less than one star. Avoid MetLIfe if you are looking for insurance. They will look for excuses not to pay out on your claim and ask for documentation / records that have already been provided. Further, they will not answer questions when asked but will simply read whatever comments have been entered into their system; the same comments that are being questioned. Without a doubt, the worst company in the world when it comes to holding up their end. I was on short term disability from my job at a tv station. I was made to jump throw pointless hoops. My paycheck was held up at one point because they claimed to need more info. No one called me or emailed me. They just waited until I didn't get paid. When I called, I told two thing were missing. They needed my height and weight. That's all. I just missed another pay cycle. No one can tell my why. Everytime I call I have to tell my story all over again. They transfer me. Then I have to tell my story one more time just to be transferred again. Some guy name Carl told me a pack of lies then disappeared. I'm disappointed my company continues to allow Metlife to mistreat us so bad. All of this at a time when all you're trying to do is get healthy. The stress is killing me and they could care less. Try being stuck in bed and you don't know if you are going to be able to pay your rent. This company is pure evil. read more

I'm not pleased with Metlife, the company my original Long-term disability insurer, Aetna, has hired to manage my claim this year. The so-called "yearly" review came less than six months after the last one from Cigna( dba Aetna) last year. This year's come in the middle of a hospitalization stay due to pneumonia - you'd think they'd just say 'call us back when you're well enough," but nope! Second offense: having a doctor that's never seen me do a 'file review" and make recommendations that I can go back to work, based on her review of my health data, which is incomplete, false, and fraudulent. It would be one thing if this doctor was an Occupational Specialist; or if her conclusions merely said the files were incomplete, but no, she's making health recommendations. I believe this is illegal, since I don't think a doctor is allowed to make recommendations for a person they've never physically examined - will have to check with my state on that. Third offense, and this one is just really tacky: giving my treating doctors (all of whom have seen me many times, in person) only 1 week to complete paperwork that they had no prior notice of. Metlife didn't bother to tell me, either, until the deadline. I literally got the letter in the mail the day of the deadline; and it took me that day and the next to call all 4 doctors and figure out what the hey-holler had happened; and another to request an extension with Metlife, to which there has been no response. When you consider just how busy a good doctor's office is; and that most doctors don't work weekends - I mean, it's just not reasonable to expect documentation with supporting files in one 5-day period! Especially since they gave my doctors a month for paperwork earlier this year.. I wish I could say that i'm done with Metlife; that I can find another company to take over administration of my claim. But I can't, because it's not up to me. Aetna made the decision to contract with Cigna last year; and now Metlife; and if I don't 'play ball', I don't get my monthly stipend. That's not even the worst of it, either - the 'file review' with all of its lies, will be used to say I'm not disabled and can go back to work. You know, I have typed just 3 letters today, and the stress of doing so has already exacerbated the nerve damage in both my forearms - tremors will set in by the end of the day. There is no comfortable position for me - sitting or standing - due to bursitis in both hips, spinal stenosis that makes my spine hunch forward; and lumbar lordosis which causes nonstop pain due to the disc degeneration. Yeah, that sure sounds like I can sit at a desk and do 'light work."! Not! It's just another ploy to discredit me as a disabled person- discrimination if you really think about it - so they don't have to pay me. I mean, if the Social Security Administration considers me disabled, then why is Metlife dba Aetna fighting it? Money, that's the answer. Aetna is all about the Benjamins, and so is Metlife, their bully-boy! The last time this happened, it took 2.5 years of legal wrangling to get those LTD benefits back - my health suffered, the condition of my house suffered; I was on Food Stamps -because they cut my monthly income in more than half. Aetna had to pay me back for those 2.5 years anyway, because they delayed so long that under the ERISA law (which is only concerned with whether a company follows its own policies - not disability), they either had to pay me or go to court and fight it out. Sure looks like it's going that way again. Sigh. And now I've got Lupus or some other autoimmune disease to boot.....I'm so tired. Do me a favor, USA - please, please don't use Metlife! If we can't run them out of town on a rail as they deserve, then at least we can legislate with our wallets and not give them any more of our hard-earned money! Well here's a real life scenario...My wife paid for short term disability from her employer, which the cost was deducted as part of her insurance option coverage bi-monthy. Since March of this year, my wife's income stopped, and case was put on hold. The case transferred from Aetna to Metlife. All documentation from the Doctor's for some reason have been misplaced, we have supplied all the required documentation requested from Metlife more than once related to Doctor visits, notations, medical history, current and past pre-scriptions and yet Metlife can't establish my wife's case. Metlife replied 4/1/17 policy is 45 days for case evaluation, when the 45 days were up on 5/15/17, Metlife informed they need an additional 10 days and as of today 5/24/17, no response!?! We are a two income family, that is needed for us to provide for our family and credit obligations. For the past two months, we had to pick and choose what gets paid. We are now behind on all our bills, one of our cars is out for repossession and our behind on our House payment. We have had to borrow money, sell personal items. My wife can't even get the treatment she needs, because her visits for this specific case are out of pocket expense. All of this has been told to Metlife, but since it does not reflect them in any way, and at the end of the day they go on with life. No human factor is applied, we are just a case number and the amount of stress and depression this organization has bestowed upon us is absolutely unacceptable in a modern society.
