Feels safer than many other stations but that's not saying a lot. There's a whole lot of stairs. It has a pretty good location at Chicago and Milwaukee Avenues. It serves the Blue Line. This is between the Grand and Division stations. Inside there's kind of a bad odor and there's a few sketchy people but that's typical stuff around. There's a few bus stops that are located conveniently close by here. Good area. It has some cool bars and restaurants. It seems like it's mostly safe.

Although I love Metra (comfort, reliability, QUIET CARS), what the CTA has going for it is ease. I can take this single conveyance from Cumberland to the Loop and walk a block to my workplace, as opposed to when I take Metra. There's a parking garage at Cumberland so you can park and ride. The cost of taking the CTA, even with the much higher parking rate ($6, and Metra only costs $2) is about the same or maybe a couple bucks cheaper. The station is a bit run down. I'm not sure if I'll feel comfortable taking it in a few weeks when the time change happens since the parking garage is dark and the station area itself is under construction and a bit dank as well. But I'm glad to have multiple options for getting to work.

We were headed to Chicago Music Exchange on N Lincoln. Our route was Cermak-McCormick to Clark/Lake, where we transferred to the Brown line for the Paulina train stop. The station gets crowded! We were there midday on Tuesday on one of the hottest days in June. Fortunately, the signage was clear and we got to the correct platform. Plus the wait for the train wasn't long. Chicago has a great public transportation train system.

I'd either Uber/Lyft into the city or hop on the blue line and go into the city. CTA has its ups and downs. One station is no different really than another metro location. Maybe the further you are from the city you can expect more bus spots and individual car parking spots. This is one of those instances! Physically this is a great station. As far as CTA goes on scheduling and routes that's not the point of this review. Don't put ketchup on your Chicago style hot dog.

There is a store inside the building that has food that's kinda overpriced. Bring cash if your total is under $1 because they charge a dollar with card. The elevator isn't what people say it is. It's fairly large and serves its purpose. There are 2 benches in the building and a few more outside, however, the benches inside are past the turnstiles, which means you can't use them unless you pay. There is also multiple Pace Bus Routes, like the 301 that takes you from Forest Park to Wheaton Metra, or 303 which takes you to Rosemont. Very good station

The last time I used the lot and returned around midnight, the parking lot lights were ALL turned OFF. Was scary spooky. Also some sketchy characters hanging around the station. Be advised that there are actually two lots: One is CTA, I think run by a contractor. The other is owned by the town of Forest Park - which does not respond to email inquiries. There are much better run, more accommodating, safer CTA stations with parking which I have experienced, but for those in the area, you're stuck. ps: The Yelp form just asked about "Gender Neutral Restrooms" - there are NO restrooms of any kind at ANY CTA stations!

One of the most stunning things about Thorndale is how narrow the platform is. While the CTA isn't known for roomy platforms (that little passage at Granville being a great example), Thorndale dials it up a few notches. With the two stairwells, a large portion of the platform is uncomfortably tight. Another frustration with this station is the lack of upcoming departure signage at the platform level. Especially as there's no countdown until trains leave Howard, this is particularly necessary. Besides, if the temporary Bryn Mawr station can have such signage, there is simply no excuse. At this point, I'd like to add that the station is not accessible; however, Granville, a couple blocks north, is. What I do like, other than the spacious lobby, is that the station is relatively clean, and there's a greater than average amount of seating.

CTA Thorndale, is one of the safest train stops in Edgewater, other than CTA Berwyn from what I've…read moreheard. What really catches my eye at this stop is the the bike locking area. Not bad, but I'd never leave my bike there, unless i was trying to get rid of it. Kudos for it having a bike pump there as well, but nope! I'd rather not leave my bike there. Just like CTA Bryn Mawr, Berwyn, and Granville in Edgewater; Thorndale has a decent set of restaurants, and businesses surrounding it: Swift Elementary, Broadway Armory, Moody's Pub, Grand China Express, Corner Cafe, Rice Thai Asian Kitchen, and Thorndale Cafe to name some. Decent CTA stop; I haven't really experienced running into panhandlers in this area, and haven't really heard of incidents in this area; Chicago Police keeps an eye on it pretty well; thank God. I end this review by saying it is also an easy access to Thorndale Beach/Lane Beach or whatever you want to call it. Check it out! : )

Don't get me wrong, Granville is fine, only as several others have noted, it's just really freakin'…read morenarrow! The only way in or out is on the north side, and if you're exiting, the path you have to walk can only fit people single file, unless someone wants to take the chance and tip-toe the blue safety line (definitely do not recommend). Otherwise, the station is reasonably clean. A pressure washing wouldn't really hurt, but there is no trash or 'other' waste to be found. There is a large cover that extends over the platform and part of the tracks to offer protection from the elements, and areas with electric heaters for those winter months. There are also a handful of benches and ample signage with arrival times. Some other features of this station include an up escalator, an elevator free of foul smells (only a little chlorine), a bike rike, and a large mural. The station also appears to be staffed during peak hours. Finally, I appreciate that the station is very well lit at night. Thus, Granville is not my favorite stop on the red line due to its size. However, with the worst thing being a slight queue to exit, Granville gets an A-OK in my book.

This station is conveniently located in the heart of Edgewater, and CTA personnel do a pretty good…read morejob of keeping the station clean. However, as others have noted, the platform is very narrow, and unlike other nearby stations (such as Thorndale or Wilson), Granville has only one entrance and exit, which is on the north side of the platform. This results in a two-way bottleneck of people entering and exiting the station. Unfortunately this problem has become much worse since last May, when the station's lone escalator was taken out of service for repairs. This has forced both entering and exiting passengers to use the same narrow stairwell. Repairs to the escalator were originally promised to be finished by July, then the contractor pushed the date back to end of August. When August came and went, the contractor once again changed the completion date to mid-September. Mid-September came and went, and the contractor changed the completion date yet again to Oct. 31, 2023 (...beginning to see a pattern here?) It's now Nov 8th and the sign shows November 15, 2023 as the completion date, but nobody around here is holding their breath. You get used to this sort of nonsense living in a place like Chicago (who wants to make a bet that the project won't be done by next Wednesday as promised? I'll offer generous odds). CTA has posted signage explaining why their escalators need repairs and refurbishment, and I get it. However, the signage only explains why the repairs need to be made, it does not explain why the project has taken so long to complete and why the contractor has continually pushed back their own forecasted completion date. I'm sure the contractor will offer up some lame excuse that they had to order a special part from Taiwan which is taking months to be shipped in. I don't mind the length of time that the repairs are taking, what I do mind is that the contractor continually dangles and then revises their project completion date. Alas, this is what happens when you use union labor. There are no consequences for half-assing the job as the union will protect its members time and time again for missing deadlines which would land any private sector worker into serious trouble. You can't blame the CTA though, because if they were to hire a non-union outfit, a bunch of those overpaid union guys would be picketing outside all the CTA stations with that giant inflatable rat. So to avoid this, they just give in. This is your "Welcome to Chicago" moment, folks. The same exact thing happened at O'Hare Airport when the ATS trains were taken offline back in 2019. The project was originally supposed to take just eight months, but the contractor kept continually pushing back the completion date, and it took almost three years before the ATS trains were back up and running. And they pathetically tried to use the pandemic as the excuse for the delays, when in fact the delays began occurring long before the pandemic or lockdowns. Sheesh. No wonder why Jack and Bobby Kennedy hated unions so much.
