After all, I would deliver my baby far from my family in a foreign land and I needed to find someone reliable to assist me. I've Googled some obvious key words like "good ob-gyne manila" and I've found a blog by a Brazilian woman who had lived in Manila some years ago. Thanks to the internet, people can share their experiences (hey, Yelp!). This woman was saying lots of great things about Dr. Henson, so I wrote down her name in my Moleskine. The plan was setting an appointment as soon as I arrived in Manila. That's what I did. I was 5 months pregnant, if I'm not mistaken. The first impression of her was very positive. She's very cool. And fashionable. She wears unique clothes. Actually, the first thing I've noticed when I entered the room were her signature glasses - thick, round and black, just like Harry Potter! By her clinic, you can also tell she's a design fan. She has miniatures of designed chairs as part of the decor. Ok, you may be wondering: "what doest it matter if a doctor is fashionable or not? I want to know if she's skilled!". I tell you: yes, she is VERY skilled. But she's also VERY talkative, so you have to make sure you talk too. I mean, make sure to find ways to make all your questions. I had a great experience with her, but I know some people just get stressed because they feel she's not listening to them. It's up to you. I've never had this feeling, though. She did a great job during my labor and delivery and my baby was born healthy and strong :) Another thing I like about Dr. Henson is that she always text you back when you send her some message. Being text friendly is something I really appreciate in a doctor. She replies really fast, what is great for anxious people like me. He also holds a clinic at the branch near our village but at the time when we really need to see him, he was at Montillano. So, off drive to the northern part of Alabang. Alabang Med Main is a small hospital that is very accessible to the public. The majority of the patients belong to the masa so don't expect to see guards opening the door for you nor a concierge to answer your inquiries and assist you with your other concerns. Alcohol and sanitizers are scarce. Ceiling fans and not ACs are used for ventilation. It's kind of a self-service hospital. When you go there, you get a number from the nurse's station, where around five nurses are attending to other patients, and wait for your number to be called. As soon as you are called, a nurse will record your vital signs on an index card which they will file on their library-like catalogue cabinet. The nurse will then give you another number and you need to wait for your turn right outside the doctor's clinic. Doctors don't get assisted, too, unlike in bigger hospitals. While Alabang Medical Clinic Main may not be an air conditioned and full-service hospital, it has very accommodating nurses who don't snap at patients despite the bulk of their workload. Alabang Med also has good doctors who give proper diagnosis and appropriate treatment to all patients regardless of their paying capability. We have peace of mind whenever we walk out from the doctor's clinic and relieved that we have received the proper treatment.

As I was walking, I happen to see Cathy Valencia and had heard of her name probably from word of mouth or online advertisements. Now I know there's a branch in Makati. I asked my friend who lives in Manila if she's ever experienced their Clinic. She said no, but to different clinics one of which is in BGC. I looked up both clinics websites and contacted them with a few inquiries about what I'd be interested in and perhaps make an appointment. A day later, I get a Viber message from a customer service person from CV who was happy to help me out. With the concerns and interests I have, there was an appointment later that afternoon but only one time slot available to do all the treatments I'm looking forward to doing. I still have not heard from my friend's recommendation and purged that idea. The agent did a pre-consultation, but suggested I needed to come in for my appointment so that my skin can be assessed in person. I gladly took the 3:30pm appointment on a Thursday afternoon. Once I arrived, I'm pleased with how pretty the front lobby is. Met with one technician and had a few questions answered. Let's just say I spent 4 hours at Cathy Valencia, had 3 ladies work on 3 different treatments/procedures, amazed at the cleanliness, professionalism, detail oriented with the work, also purchased 3 different face creams and a face wash which I was instructed to use in place of my regular beauty products for 2 weeks until the healing is complete. According to the website, CV has 6 branches all around Metro Manila and a branch in Tokyo & Nagoya! I can somehow get to Tokyo a little bit easier as I occasionally have work trips to Japan. After a…read morethorough research in various blog sites about the doctors recommended by my friends and relatives I decided to give Dr. Geoia Amores a try and went to her clinic at LPDH. The wait time was decent. Her clinic was comfortable with actual reception area. She is the BEST ob-gyne! All the reviews I've read about her is true. She is easy to talk to, gentle, ask appropriate questions, and I felt that I received the time I needed without feeling rushed. She did complete physical exam and listened to my past history. Right then and there, I decided to stick with her and she will be the one to take care of me and my baby and nobody else. Can't wait to see her again on my next visit.

This place has a history with our organization as we have almost always held our orientations here,…read moregeneral assemblies, and who knows what else since they have been so generous to be offer Duque Hall as our venue. It's a sad thing that they're going to level it down to build a hospital, but I'm sure the latter is much more important. It's towards the back of the DOH's San Lazaro compound, and though it's a long way into it from the street, it's actually a nice walk there, if not for the beating sun. The guards are always nice and since we've always been here on weekends, it's always a quiet location, aside from the ruckus we raise when we're there. The venue is huge, great for accommodating such big groups such as ours. It's generally a professional affair, with proper air conditioning, comfortable chairs, sturdy tables, and a warm, simple design to everything. I've taken hundreds of photos here and though I've gotten sick of seeing the same background, it's always looked like a fun time there. The caretaker Joseph has always been especially helpful and friendly, and I do hope he goes on to greener pastures. One thing I will miss in particular: the couches in their lobby. Nowhere else have I run and thrown myself onto such a soft, welcoming seating surface. I'll miss you, couches! Goodbye, Duque Hall!

And the ultimate, in my opinion, of conveniences is the unique thing that is the Filipino Mall. I mean I get it, malls are supposed to be the enemy, it's the symbol of what's killing the cool and the kooky and the truly unique. But I won't lie to myself, and I will admit that I like malls with no trace of irony. Situated in Mega Mall, the De Los Santos STI Megaclinic has proven to be a very convenient place for me, for when I need attention from doctors, when I am sick and I need medicine, or from pretty nurses, for when I am sick, need medicine, AND attention not necessarily medical. Boasting of a relatively early opening time, you can be there by 7:30 AM and they'll already have someone who can see to you, with General Practitioners and Internal Medicine Specialists starting their consultation at those hours. If you're looking for more specialized help, name it, they have it: Allergologists, Diabetologists (especially useful for me), OB-GYN's and Urologists, just about every field of specialty is represented for consultation, with varying schedules depending on the doctors, of course. It even has a full laboratory and a rehab center, staffed by, in my opinion, the best people you would trust with a needle or a handbike. Just like everything in the mall, it's essentially catering to a need you don't know you have: medical expertise for when you need it to fit with your schedule.
