To anyone reading this review, let me start off by saying THANK YOU to Dr. Khalabari and the whole staff of Metrolina Eye Associates in Stalling and Union West Surgical Center Indian Trail. I am definitely not shy nor would I feel hesitated in giving my whole-heartedly honest review. Let me start off by sharing my own experiences and how I end up with Metrolina Eye Associates. Being that it was my mother's first time to be treated for cataract as well as my first time learning what is all involve including the medical cost, it was very difficult to find the answers I need to help me decide where to take her especially when she only has Medicare Part A and B and no other supplemental insurance. Cost and finding the best cataract doctor in Charlotte was very important to me for the sake of my mother. I had called every eye doctor in the area all over Charlotte many of those I highly would NOT recommend (Mecklenburg Eye Associate, Christenbury Eye Center, and Horizon Eye Care just to name a few of NOT to go) from University Area, Uptown, South Park, Myers Park, Ballantyne, and Cotswold and every single one of them (the front desk, reservation desk, surgical scheduling, and billing department) are both incompetent and unempathetic that had left me with frustrations because these doctor's office (except Metrolina Eye Associates of Stalling) could not give me any definitive answers of what the cost be for a "regular/standard intraocular lens IOL that Medicare will ONLY cover" even after I had already explained in detail what my mother can ONLY afford. We didn't care what their doctor would prefer or suggest. We only care what Medicare ONLY covers. How hard can it be to provide me the exact procedural code rather than giving me an "overprice range of speculative cost" or responding for which I find it very common and very irritating - "I DON'T KNOW" response. The code is what medical facilities use when billing the insurance company. After calling different offices, many times I find myself having to explain repeatedly and asking questions in different ways that perhaps these front desk/reservation staff/insurance billing departments could understand what I am looking for --- COST! After responding that I am fully aware that Medicare will cover 80%, I still need to know exactly what is the 20% of what basis without it the percentage is useless. In other words, the $$$$ amount. Because the out of pocket expense is very important to us who has limited insurance coverage, we wanted to make sure we won't end up paying an outrageous price or between $1,000-1,500 per eye, which includes anesthesia, doctor's fee, and surgical/hospital cost. Knowing exactly what the cost would helps us proceed to the next step and that is looking for a reputable, experienced, knowledgeable and caring eye doctor. After careful review (including obtaining the probably cost) and two months later, I've decided to take my mother to Metrolina Eye Associates and it's the BEST decision ever! Finding the right doctor can be daunting and stressful. Do your due diligence. Metrolina Eye Associates - Stallings and Union West Surgical Center - Indian Trail has hired the most professional staff from front desk (who are responsive with welcoming voice and great listener), technicians (who are gentle), billing department (who are thorough, specific, and honest), doctor's scheduler (who are cordial and empathetic), and most importantly Dr. Khalabari who is very knowledgeable, cordial, confident, experienced, honest, and forbearing with every single patients he sees to make sure all questions and concerns have been answered. He tells you the expected, unexpected and the worse-case scenario leaving no surprises. He's not the typical doctor who sees a patience as a dollar sign, which means spend only few minutes with the patient and move on to the next. The more patient seen on that particular day the more money is collected. It's like a quota that some doctor do, I think. When it comes to finding the right doctor and medical office/facility, I'm very careful and meticulous about. In my opinion, I find it very important that doctor's office staff the front desk position with knowledgeable, good listener, and responsive people with great customer service not just some machine which many patients and prospective patients find themselves leaving voicemail(s) and calls left unanswered or unreturned. I'm very cognizant, pragmatic, and conservative individual that I make sure that I approach the situation in the best solution possible with choices available at the time. Having said this, I ultimately recommend any cataract patients to come to Metrolina Eye Associates and Union West Surgical Center see DR. KHALABARI. They also do general eye care and LASIK. Again, my mom is 81 years old with one eye blind due to the amount of cataract in her right eye. Today, both eyes are 20/20. I need to emphasize I have seen three doctors and they are all great. That being said, the front desk often, but not always, has the kind of staff you just want to scream at. The WORST.Even that is unfair because several have been nice but here I am again on hold after i was "accidentally" hung up on. SO RUDE. Also this is an EYE CARE center.Some of us CANT SEE and are old. How's about a little help checking in at your stupid kiosk instead of the eye roll, sigh, and smirk? I have tried to cancel an appointment for a week now. The phone system puts you on hold for at least 30 min and no answer. When you leave a message, they do not call back. The staff is nice but the place seems very disorganized. It is also very difficult to make an appointment in the first place. Nothing seems to be available to do on-line. Even the survey they send out after the visit is a broken link. read more

I had high hopes for this business as my previous optometrist did not know why I was having problems. The optical team were wonderful but the non medical staff, wow!! Rude and disrespectful. When they call you for your appointment it's like being called into court!! They are too lazy to get up from behind their desk and come get you. They bellow out your name from their seats instead of walking into the atrium waiting area. Awful. The two women at the desk where you order your glasses were engrossed in their conversation and I felt like I was imposing!! Also, the one women had the most terrible cough. She did have a mask on but should not have been there!! I wanted to run!! Last point is don't get your glasses there once you have your prescription. After eight years with Dr. Ivan Mac I have thrown in the towel! I had a billing/insurance issue and called their office. After a short discussion with one of the office personnel, I was hung up on. I wrote Metrolina Eyecare and received no response. I then wrote directly to Dr Mac and did not get the courtesy of a reply. This is apparently their version of patient care. I'll be going elsewhere for care needs. read more

The staff are all wonderful. Friendly and professional. This rating is not for them. However the company: Metrolina Eye Associates PLLC, incorporated in 2004 is so grossly profit driven it is appalling. I understand the importance of efficiency to make a profit, but there should be a balance between optimizing profit for the corporation and actually serving your customers (oops, patients.) As a random example, though they do a lot of cosmetic surgery, they also provide treatments that are generally for older customers. It is so embarrassing to watch old people like my husband walk past a desk (3 young ladies staring down at their screens and busily typing) to go to the mandatory computerized check-in kiosk. Which also asks for both their Medicare and SS numbers. I don't think the majority of the senior patients can actually read the kiosk screen. If they can't read it, they have to interrupt one of the busy young ladies to ask for help. So embarrassing for them! Why? Computers are cheaper than human workers, hence more profit for the owners. Another example. Scheduling is a nightmare. We are in our 70s and it's a 2-hour drive to Metrolina. They scheduled a follow-up visit (2nd surgery) for my husband the day before his third surgery. Two different locations a few miles apart. I was told they could not schedule the 2nd follow-up visit the same day as his 3rd surgery or even the same day as his follow visit for that 3rd surgery. Not even asking for both at the same location, just trying to avoid 2 round trips in the same week. Those are just two random examples. Other issues include the bad software they use for check in and pre-surgical questions. Hubby and I have worked in computer technology since the 70s - we know bad software. So...if you're willing to be treated like cattle solely to maximize the corporations profits, this is the place for you. read more

I have to agree with all the subpar reviews. I dropped off a dmv paper for my dad a week and half ago as Dr. Peterson said no problem filling it out. I have tried to get a hold of the office for an hour and a half today. I have been given varying answers, hung up on and still have no status when they can fill out a piece of paper. They need remedial customer service training. It has been the worst experience I have ever had in any industry and this has to do with healthcare! read more

I have been going here for some time now. The doctor is fine. They have a new person that fits you for your glasses. She is not friendly. She does not seem to care what I am saying about the fit of the glasses. I picked up a different pair yesterday hoping they would work better. They will not. The lady that fit me previously no longer works there. I am so frustrated. I wish I had taken the prescription someplace else. My exam was fine. It's the fitting for the glasses that is a problem. Found out after 1st contact lens exam that we had to pay $50 to attend a class on "how to put in your contacts". Office Mgr would not provide the lens prescription until we paid the $50 for training. This fee is addition to the exam fees. We understand that they need to show someone how to take care of contact lens but to charge for this is ridiculous and a prime example of "nickel & diming". Very disappointed in this tactic so my spouse will not be coming back. They lost a customer for life over $50. read more

Metro I found this eye care center on my insurance website. The doctor i met Dr Shah was very thorough & professional. Very nice demeanor & showed concern for my eye issues. He advised me he would like to compare my medical records from my previous eye doctor. This is very important to me, it's my eye health. read more

Dr was rude dismissive and did not answer questions Support staff was wonderful however

I scheduled an appointment for medical Botox injections and was told I would receive an email with the address. I didn't notice I did not receive the email until the day of the appointment, so I contacted the office and was not able to get through; when I put the name in my GPS the address took me to a Metrolina Greenhouse in Huntersville. I called to reschedule but the receptionist could not find me, I gave additional information and that is when she locate the appt and reschedule me. I confirmed again the reason for the appointment. Arrived to my appt 08/28 at 10:30 am checked in, called to the back, waited for about 25 minutes for Dr. Christine Annunziata just to tell me she would not be able to complete injections due to my insurance needing to be approved it. I would have thought that part would have been handled before the appt. Dr. Christine Annunziata makes the comment "I don't know why you would think that we would have done it today". Maybe because that's the reason I scheduled my appointment! She proceeded to do the eye exam, absolutely not. I already have a ton of tests, and dx I know exactly what's going on with my eyes. A waste of time to schedule 2 weeks prior uploading insurance information online! read more

Matthews Office - they do not monitor their email from their website or from the responses to email they send out. Their portal registration fails over and over. They argued with me on the phone about paying for the exam so I called Aetna who then called the office to let them know I had coverage but when I went in for my appointment they argued with me again. I had to wait 30 minutes beyond my appointment just to get into the check with the assistant. The medical assistant then asked me for all the same information I spent hours entering into their portal. read more

Very strange experience, I've called this place 5 times trying to make an apptment (they don't provide the option to book online). No one picks up the phone. It says I'm the 2nd person in line everytime I call and then I'm on hold for 30+ mins. You'd think they would want to take on new customers for more money. I had the Light Adjustable Lens Cataract surgery. 1st I don't honestly believe I had cataracts to begin with. I think they just wanted the $11k to do this surgery. I was PROMISED I would not have to wear glasses of any kind ever after. I was promised I would see up close, mid range and distance. So at my age I thought this would be perfect for me. Well 12 weeks later and lots of misery I can only see distance. I have to wear reader for work and different strength readers for everything else. I am extremely up happy and upset over all of this. Now, the front desk at the Matthews location is very rude and you have to check yourself in. Why? The have 3 girls working so why do I have to check myself in? The nursers are amazing!!! Dr. Mac has NO beside manner! He is extremely rude and will not let you finish anything you are trying to say. I didn't have $11k to do this, but I did it! I wish I had never done this and like I said I don't think I even had cataracts to begin with. I had been going to the Monroe and Charlotte locations for two years and was NEVER told I had Cataracts, but after my annual visit in Dec 24, I was leaving and by chance asked the doctor about getting Lasik done again. I had it done over 20yrs ago and he said NO I couldn't. But then he recommended the Cataract surgery. I said even though I don't have Cataracts and he said yes. But after going in to see Dr Mac in Matthews, now I have cataracts and this surgery would be a miracle for me. Sounds fishy, but I thought this would also be a miracle for me at my age so I agreed to do. Worst decision ever!! PLEASE do your research and DONT use Dr Mac. read more

I am having issues with my eyes and the only appointment they offered me was three months out. This is not acceptable! Very poor customer service. Forty years of age means these appointments are more involved. Aging... Sigh. This location is super convenient for the Matthews/Indian Trail/Stallings area. I came in from Waxhaw during the morning rush which I wouldn't advise. The office facility is very nice and super clean. There are multiple waiting areas so if you don't want to be around chatty children, you can find a nice quiet corner with massive windows allowing for natural light. Front office staff was super nice. I'm a new patient and didn't print out a paper insurance card for my vision coverage but they didn't make a big deal about it. The office has state-of-the-art equipment. Gone are the days are that crazy machine that checks your eye pressure! I saw Dr. Beachkofsky. She was amazing. Friendly, personable, knowledgeable and professional. It was like chatting with a girlfriend who also happened to take care of my vision needs. She even explained that I could visit a more convenient location that they have in Waxhaw. I didn't need new prescription eye wear and the tech informed me that I could use my benefit for non prescription Kate Spade sunglasses. I walked away paying nothing out-of-pocket. Score! A perfect visit. I highly recommend this facility, particularly Dr. Beachkofsky! read more

Cataract Surgery - one eye only; on Medicare; Dr. Mac provided excellent expertise and efficiency examining and then completing the surgery! Certainly #1 when it comes to eye surgery! however, don't expect "bed side manner" but that's not what you're paying for. I did feel pressure from Dr. Mac to choose the toric lens option ($3,500 plus of out of pocket costs for me based on medicare paying everything for the standard lens)! Trusting that this was based on my best interests and not his! Post surgery I am happy with my choice of the standard lens. His surgical assistant Marissa is patient, provided excellent followup on paperwork, instructions and ensuring I received the eye drops I required. She's the best part of this practice. I would say honestly some of the rest of the staff (those who check your eyes) are "ok". I would recommend this practice if you know what you want once you are provided with options. Everything was going great up until we met with the doctor. The reception ladies were great, check in went smooth and the nurse was kind and informative on what she was doing. Should've known the appointment wasn't going to go well from the moment Spring Plihcik came into the room and slammed the door behind her. My mom never knew she had Keratoconus, she's been wearing glasses her entire teenage and adulthood years. We were going to get Lasik eye procedure together but unfortunately we weren't able to because the doctor there discovered she had Keratoconus and moving forward with the procedure would make matters worse. He advised us to seek an eye specialist and my mom having had experience with Metrolina Eye Associates-Monroe, she would take my grandmother to her appointments and was always treated well. She decided to give them a try for herself and they told her the Matthews location would be able to assist. Plihcik had the nerve to say "so your mom doesn't have vision or health insurance but she was willing to pay between four and five thousand to get lasik procedure, that doesn't make sense.." First of all my mother's money and what she decides to spend it on is NONE OF HER CONCERN. My mom thought that by getting Lasik her eye vision would improve BECAUSE SHE NEVER KNEW SHE HAD KERATOCONUS.. had she known she would've sought an eye specialist years ago. This doctor was rude, unprofessional and outright nasty. She told my mom she couldn't help her and told her she would have to refer her somewhere else. Granted if the doctor couldn't assist us, we understand but that doesn't justify how poorly we were treated. We left this appointment with the same information we originally arrived with. Nobody should have to feel like they're a bother or stupid for that matter because "things don't make sense", which led us to feel discriminated. read more

I give them 5 Stars! Dr Brown is just a wonderful glaucoma doctor. I loved how she took the time to explain my exam and test in a detailed manner. I have had glaucoma for many years but never understood all the testing--I thought I just had difficulty understanding but now I realize that my past doctors just disnt take the time to break it down to me. Dr Brown was also able to treat my glaucoma with a laser so that I did not have to use eye drops. Amazing and life changing! I am happy with the results and appreciated the staff working with her. I went to the Indian Land location on March 17th to have some skin tags removed around both eyes by Kasey Ratliff the Physician Assistant, she was very nice and did a great job. She spotted sometime above my right eye brow and asked me if she could remove it and get a biopsy which would take about 2 weeks. She called me back in around a week or so and told me that the spot above my eye brow was basal cell carcinoma and I would need surgery, Dr. Ratliff said a person named Pam who does the scheduling would call me in about a week give or take and set up the surgery which is a 2 day process. So Pam calls me last week while I was at the bus stop picking up my granddaughter and asked her to call me back in 15 minutes or i could call her back, she said would call back!! She never called back and I have been calling the Matthews office everyday, morning & afternoon since she called and I either get mostly voicemail or someone in scheduling who can't set up a date for the surgery, you must speak to the mysterious Pam!!! I'am beginning to lose my patience and confidence in Metrolina Eye Associates and I think it's time to find another Eye Doctor!!!!!! read more

Had my first visit here recently and was overall impressed. Mainly because getting an eye exam isn't exactly the most thrilling life event for anyone...unless your into that sort of thing? Lol. OK, the place was very well kept, nice and airy with plenty of daylight for the waiting area and doesn't give off that feeling of a typical medical office building like some places. The reception staff was very quick and there was no delay in getting the paperwork turned around and me into an exam room. I'm probably the most impatient person I know so this is critical for me. The supplemental staff was very friendly. My optometrist was Dr. Berkibile and he was very attentive, informative and generally had great mannerisms. Today I had to go to Monroe for my exam since my favorite doctor, Dr. Stacy Schorner is there now hopefully temporarily, but I missed Tiffany at the Optical. The girl I saw was great though. I wrote this because I saw where someone posted negative comments about her but I beg to differ. Also, Dr. Schorner is wonderful, highly recommend either location. read more

Melissa, Dr A's tech kept telling me how Dr. A could fix the excess skin over my lids, and open up my peripheral vision some, so i flew up from Ocala, Fl for an evaluation and then came back for surgery, i had my one month check up and Casey showed me before and after pictures and it was amazing the difference, her entire team cares so much about her patients and i can't wait to come back for my lower lids. Please don't go here if you care about your eye care, the stallings office is like a 3 ring circus without a circus leader. The front desk is cold when you go in and I don't mean temperature either. The Nurses I honestly can't say a Bad thing about them they treated me GREAT and worked me through being very friendly. When I got to the point where the Dr saw me when he was checking my eye when he leaned in to look at my eye I had to hold my breath because it smelled like I was being examined by a wet ash tray. Signed a form in order for them to get records from past Dr which they never did and I only found out by calling my previous Drs office to see if they sent my records and that's when I was told they never received that request so I was suppose to have a follow up appt to go over the records to see what it could be he had just completed an exam and wanted to see my past records before telling me what was going on with my eye, really he's the Dr that just checked my eyes why look back in the past he just saw my eyes and I told him about my previous issues. The only good thing about this office is the Nurses. Just my opinion and that's what these pages are for so there's mine save you time and trouble. read more

The doctor did the exam and essentially had me believing I was going blind. I ordered new lenses for my glasses and could not use them. Was desperate one day and popped into the Eye Care Center at Walmart and the gentleman calmly told me they had switched the lenses in the glasses... right lens in left side, left lens in right side. One star is for the doctor's job. He did the eye check job correct, but this vision care and this first visit made me cried yesterday. All I want is a contact lens prescription. I told them that during the appointment call, later I told the nurse because she kept asking when is last time the glasses made. After check I ask the doctor: "Is this for contact lens?" he told me:" the optical lady will help you with your prescription." The optical lady gave me the file immediately and sent it to the front desk: "you are good to go!" she said. At first I was thrilled because it's the first time the optical staff not sticks on the sale of they own products. I asked the front desk lady again: "So can I buy any brand of contact lens with this prescription?" she said yes and quickly check out for me. But when I went to Costco to shop for my contact lens after words, I found that it is actually a prescription for glasses. Then I call them, they start to teach me in very calm and cold voice that oops it a misunderstanding. What I feel it is a trick, I can't help to ask why and they started transfer me to nowhere. Finally a lady speak to me that I need another appointment and there is misunderstanding because my eye issuance can just cover a glasses check. I felt very sorry that I yelled at that poor lady at that moment. I really can't control myself at that moment. The lady said if you don't want to put in another appointment then byebye, she hang up the phone in a second. I want people know why I'm angry, but maybe there is no misunderstanding. The Costco guy told me that a lot of eye issuance providers they acted this way. Like the lady told me: she just worked there, she don't deserve people angry at her. So every customer pay little attention deserves this! They just do their job use up your issuance in spite of you don't need it and told you that: "It's your issuance fault that you have to pay more if you want additional check items". But why they just told me at the very beginning? A kindly reminder of a full check issue matters me or them? No, all they want for a patient like me just do eye check and with a hateful issuance, accomplished annual issuance cover, game over. They just don't care. Next time, go Costco get your contact lens prescription, get what you paid for. Don't bother those kind of clinic they do big business and especially you hold an eye issuance to hurt them. read more

I never write negative reviews, but this affected my daughter's vision and I wanted to prevent others from making the same mistake we did. From the get-go, I felt Dr. Shipley was not meant to work with children, but I had faith that at the very least, she was competent. At our last visit, she recommended patching my daughter's eye for 4 hours every night, because she was not satisfied with her vision. After waiting two hours for our most recent appointment, I walked out and found another doctor. Thank goodness I did, because this new doctor informed us that her glasses were giving her 20/100 vision and the completely wrong prescription. She now has 20/20 vision with her new prescription and no need for patching. Run far away from this place. read more

The doctors are ok. Some of the staff is terrible. My family of four has used the Matthews office for years. Scheduling the wrong doctor and other issues have been encountered. Rude front desk staff are common. The latest experience was sending my teenage daughter there. My wife called 10 minutes before my daughter arrived and went over the insurance information. My daughter arrives and sees the doctor without problems. When leaving the payment front desk person demanded full payment from my teenage daughter and tried to refuse letting her leave without money. The lady demanded to know how much money my daughter had and could give them then. After finding out about the rude and maybe illegal treatment by the staff, I called my insurance provider. The insurance company said there was no problem with the insurance and Metrolina had already filed a claim for my daughter's visit. Unless would you like to experience similar treatment, I'd go elsewhere. read more

Had my annual eye exam there recently and had a very good visit. The staff was friendly and the doctor was wonderful. She did a very thorough exam and was very efficient with time. I wanted to purchase a new pair of glasses and they had a very wide selection of frames and brands. Overall this was one of the easiest and most pleasant medical visits I've had. I would not hesitate to go there again, and will for my next eye exam next year. read more
