I started coming here around the time of the pandemic when everyone started turning to nature and caring for plants. It was very therapeutic and helped redirect our thoughts to natural beauty. The entirety of Metropolitan is great, the plant selection is unmatched. However, I purchased two plants from here a fiddle leaf fig and a white bird of paradise on two separate occasions and they both have mealy bug infestations that I have Been fighting for weeks. For how expensive their plants are they should absolutely not have mealy bugs. And I am Only continuously treating these plants for reoccurring mealy bugs because each plant cost $80 and I don't have it in me to throw them out. While I have Not called metropolitan to tell them about this mealy bug issue, even if they did say they would do something to treat it I am Not sure it would help as I wouldn't want the plant treated by them and their indoor house plants all likely have them based on these two species of plants I've bought from them both with the infestation. It is going to take me some time to buy another indoor plant from them because of this. read more

DO NOT get your Christmas tree from here! The tree cost $180, and I was told it would last a few weeks. I was also told that the hole in the trunk was long and level enough to work with our stand (a pin stand). None of this was true. The tree was crispy and dead within a few days, the tree was tilted in the stand, and the hole was so shallow that we had to water it every 12 hours for the water to reach the trunk. My mom had the same experience even though we did not buy our trees at the same time. read more

PROS: This place has everything you can imagine for gardening. Every plant, accessory to the garden, gear & tools, and all for great prices. The quantity is just as good as the quality because not only do you have a large selection of items but there is plenty in stock to prevent them from selling out. They also have a lot of parking in both the front and rear CONS: It's tough to find this place if you haven't been here before since it's tucked away in a residential place. Also the personalities of some of these people aren't the nicest. One at the front desk was very snippy to me when I was there. Ugh, I've been coming to this place for years but I just can't anymore. Without fail, the cashier is rude and cold and for no reason. This is usually the middle aged lady but sometimes a younger lady (maybe her daughter?) is the same way. If you can't crack a smile or a word, if your customer's presence as they pay you is clearly an annoyance, you really shouldn't be at the front of the house. Many of the workers here are phoning it in pretty much and the owner gives off weirdness. Going to check out the many other garden centers around Bergen County - no need to keep giving Metropolitan my business. read more

Massive Nursery that has everything for gardening. Lots of plants, flowers and vegetables. Very helpful and knowledgeable staff. I loved to see lots of workers there and not one was standing around. All of them were with customers of working otherwise. This place is affiliated with the Metropolitan Plant Exchange which has other shops in Fort Lee and Paramus as well. The "farm" itself only had a chicken coup and a few goat and sheep (maybe). You probably would not come here for the animals. I would consider them as a bonus if anything. This place has large outdoor selections of shrubs, perennials and some annuals. The staff is friendly, helpful and knowledgeable. The indoor area is much smaller than the one In Fort Lee. It is an enjoyable shopping experience and you can find a lot of varieties that you won't find in the big box stores.The only problem is the price where the plants can be pricy compared to other nurseries or the big box stores. Lovely place to visit and buy. It really is a going concern, a real farm with a real old Dutch colonial farmhouse. The plants and trees they sell are wonderfully healthy and robust. Also fairly priced. The farm has a lot of chickens and it is definitely worth buying eggs there. Apart from the chickens and the two or three llamas, there is nothing here for small kids. The plants they sell here are good but I don't like to shop there because the man who is always there (owner or manager) is creepy. Wish he wouldn't stare the entire time I shop and make comments about my body. It's happened on multiple occasions. He will literally make a beeline to young women, watch them picking up plants directly next to them (never offers to help), and makes comments that would make anyone feel queasy. This is a wonderful place to pick up your plants and fertilizers, tools, and planters. They even have a large hen house so you can buy fresh eggs. I have really enjoyed walking around this large farm and reviewing the supplies they have for yards,gardens, and patios. Useful for vegetable gardeners in Northeast Bergen County. I'd give them the full 5 stars, but I'm still in mourning for D'Angelo's in Cresskill. $15 a flat of veggies. I'm not a frequent garden center visitor, it's mainly for flats of vegetables for my Summer garden. Metropolitan had a nice selection, they had everything I was looking for, plus a few exotics I wasn't even thinking about (Bok Choi for instance). I didn't personally need any help, but everyone I interacted with, was just fine, and there was plenty of staff available if I had needed something. As it stands their veggie seedlings looked well cared for, no dried out sickly plants, wide variety of beefsteaks, eggplant, sweet & hot peppers, leaf veggies, and herbs, plus other stuff. If you're a vegetable gardener, and don't have the time or space to start your own seedlings, I think you'll find the selection and quality at Metropolitan satisfactory. (I'd like to see more hot pepper varieties in the future please, and more exotic beefsteak tomatoes.) Their location on a historic farm property is an added bonus, with lots of shaded parking areas. They also keep chickens there, and sell farm - fresh eggs. The bottom line. Support your local garden centers, as more and more of them are being sold off for other uses. Before long all we'll have are big box stores for everything. Which kind of sucks. read more

We just visited Metropolitan Farm for the third time this year. My 13 and 14 year old daughters are alpaca-crazy and love seeing all the live animals. The staff is friendly and answers their animal questions. I love picking up new plants and fresh flowers there and they are well organized. The staff also gave great advice to me when I accidentally killed off my hydrangeas during a heat wave. One of the guys also gave good recommendations for insect control when my big holly bushes were infested over the summer. read more

This place has everything I need in the spring when I get the back and front yard rolling again. They sell the cedar mulch I like from Canada and it's not a bad price, 2 huge bags for $11. Today I picked up flats of petunias and other flowers to plant for $14.99 a tray. We also bought some perennials for the front yard and some hanging pots of flowers. Two things I really like about this business is their flowers, plants, shrubbery, bushes and trees are always very fresh and last a long time and the employees are very helpful with any questions you may have. Parking is very easy and big carts are always available to put your purchases in. Today we were helped by Denice and she stayed with us for 25 minutes, helping my wife pick out the right bush for the front yard. Great service here. I will be returning here often. read more

I am reeling from my experience today at Metropolitan Farm in Closter. I cannot say the flowers and plants, tho expensive are not lovely, but the people who run this place to a person are unpleasant and maybe scam artists. Four weeks ago I made a small purchase as a gift. It was the wrong Hook size. I returned it, and they said it would show up on my card as a credit. Well 2 weeks later , still a charge. So therefore charged twice for same purchase. I called , spoke to the Manager Jen,. She said sometimes it take a little longer give it a few more days. If not I will give you the cash Today I called, 4 weeks later. " Oh everything goes through a different office you have to call them". Feeling a little abused I said no I would like my money back, as promised. When I got to the Farm, they didn't like the receipt I had, went through my bank statement , all the while making me, the customer, feel like a frigging criminal. They were nasty , officious. and suspicious of me. It was embarrassing and incredible . I am in the service business, I would never treat a client like this. Finally the owner came over and said"give her a credit' So now I have two supposed refunds on my card which are showing up as charges for the same purchase. I never should have left. I should have called the Police. I am furious and was humiliated and just wanted to get out of there. Customer service? Really?? read more
