We went hunting for scallops and clams to make a clam linguine/vongole, and we also managed to get a bag of frozen seafood mix. I've just shopped her once, so this review is based on limited experience, but wanted to add it since there haven't been a lot of recent reviews. We recently picked up some scallops here. We bought the most expensive ones they had, which where $25 per pound. There were some others that were $19 per pound, which actually looked a little better, but the person helping me said the more expensive ones were higher quality. They were all right. Not super fresh, not very sweet, but OK. Just not as good as what I had gotten last time at Whole Foods for about 75% the price. Overall, not much in there looked like it would be top quality. Also, only about a quarter of the staff--and there were a lot of people working there--were wearing masks. The two guys working the floor, who got right up on us, were not, which just seems ridiculous these days, not to mention in violation of the current mandates I believe. read more

The guy that assisted me was beyond nice and even sold me the remaining cut piece of salmon for less than what it costs by weight. the epitome of Brooklyn hospitality- no frills, extremely friendly, accommodating, and personable. I forgot cash the first time I went and the owner told me to come back anytime that week to pay!! I had told him I lived around the corner and he was thus very neighborly to me. And alls this to say, the fish is incredible and I don't eat anything that's not really fresh. I don't think you could find better. Plus, he tells you how he recommends preparing it or storing it. You'll pay more than a grocery store but less than Whole Foods. Even if you're afraid of cooking seafood in general- you should start here to get the freshest seafood in the area at good prices instead of frozen mishandled large quantity shipped stuff at wholefoods or anywhere else. Because anything but fresh good quality fish ordered in small batches to pass muster, is not worth eating at all. I love love their oysters. I had the best experience with Pat and Metropolitan Fish Market. I called ahead to see if they had trout on a Saturday, after Whole Foods and Greenpoint Fish and Market did not. Pat said there was plenty of trout and I could come in whenever. The place feels like a vestige of an old world, plus carries an unparalleled assortment of fish. Pat was super friendly (although scolded me for going to Whole Foods), gave me a great price, but I didn't realize it was cash only - I had neither cash nor a debit card on me - so I told him I'd come back for the fish. He insisted I take the fish and come back to pay at any point that day. How nice is that?! When I came back, he said he knew I'd come back, and he didn't want me to waste money on the fee at the ATM across the street. He said he just wanted to make me a customer. I have a love-hate relationship with this place. Cooking fish is one of my reasons for getting up each morning. Metropolitan has a good selection of seafood and their prices are fair. Everything I've gotten from them over the last 3 years has been very good quality. They also have monkfish on the regular. Don't sleep on how important it is to have a monkfish hookup in your hood. The people that work there are cool. They'll clean, skin, peel & devein, or filet whatever you want quick, fast in a hurry. They usually round down the price rather than up and are generally very friendly. In 3 years, I've yet to hear loud arguing but maybe I've just been lucky. They even deliver for no extra charge which is cool when you're getting ready for a party and need 3 pounds of shrimp at the last minute. One time I needed lump crab meat for a party that night and they didn't have it. Dude who owns the place called his "guy" and it was there in an hour for me. The problem with Metropolitan Fish Market is that their hours are so unpredictable. Their hours are SUPPOSED to be 11-6 Tuesday-Sunday. This is almost never the case. They always open at like 1 and close whenever they feel like it. I don't know how many times I've called my girl to tell her, "Awww yeah, baby. It's on and poppin' tonight. I'm gonna make us some Red Snapper with toasted pecan butter (or something equally slammin'). I'll have it ready when you get home." As many of you know, the fastest way to a man or woman's heart is through his or her stomach. A good fish dinner usually leads to good sex later. My girl usually gets home from work at around 6 or 7. Many a time, I've planned a special dinner but have had to nix it because Metropolitan isn't open when they are supposed to be. You don't get good lovin' serving meatloaf like a punk. No fish, no sex. Damn you, Metropolitan Fish Market!! There have been so many times where I've gotten to Metropolitan at 3, 4, or 5 and they've been closed. Sometimes I'll try to go at 11 when they open but they never open on time. You have to plan your whole day around trying to get them when they're open. Came by here to get some scallops, guy asks me how many pounds, I said "one pound please and he replies "that's all you're getting, just one pound?" I said "umm yeah is there an issue?".. He proceeds to roll his eyes and takes my bag to the back for God knows what.. Price tag is on it, I pay and leave. I come home and start prepping, and there's what appears to be MAGGOT LARVAE in the scallops. I bring it back and he gets defensive and begins talks to me in a threatening tone and says he's "going to call his crew" on me. I filed a police report and one with the better business bureau. I tend to stay away from places that smell fishy but MFM (not to be mistaken for male for male) is an exception. The space is small but they have a nice variety of seafood to choose from. From whole fish (bronzino, red snapper, striped sea bass, etc.) to scallops (small and diver) to live lobsters to lemons, limes and much more. The attendant was super friendly and helpful...he even asked if I wanted the fish cleaned/gutted which totally slipped my mind. Also, the lobsters are from Maine or so they said. I have to believe them because they were extremely fresh and had a slight sweetness to them. The prices threw me off -- there were 2 tanks I'm assuming by size. The smaller lobsters were $8.99/lb and the bigger lobsters were $11.99/lb. What a steal! I called Red Hook Lobster Pound and their prices were substantially higher. Quality (which is questionable because MFM's lobsters were quite tasty) and popularity may have a factor in this. My total came to ~$45 -- 1 whole striped bass, 6 or 7 diver scallops, 2 lobsters (1 1/2 lbs/each) and a few lemons. The owner knocked off a few bucks as well. Several times, I would have been better off stopping at Whole Foods in Manhattan on my way home. I would love to patronize this shop, but how can I? UPDATE: I started to find this place open on the weekend when coming home from Key Food. EVERY TIME I went in, the owner was yelling at the staff, then acting like the customers couldn't hear it. If you have so little faith in your staff that you have to browbeat them in front of customers, why should I have any in you or your product? Salmon started getting skimpy, too. This is THE place to buy seafood in Williamsburg/Greenpoint. While I'm a fan of Tops on the Waterfront (N. 6 Street), this place has it beat on selection & freshness. I agree with other reviews that Metropolitan Fish has a certain odor (Insert smells like fish) and that is often a watch out in a fish market, but not here. It smells like a strong version of the ocean (and I grew up a block from the ocean, so I have a pretty good idea what that smells like) and that is a good thing. I have gotten fish here several times. There are always old locals hanging out. The owner can be a bit crusty, but he is a good guy and he believes in giving you a quality product at a very reasonable price. Two times I have gone in to buy 4-5 pounds of salmon and both times he had a new fish brought out from the back to fill my order and then knocked a couple of bucks off for the wait. Until proven wrong, this is one of my favorite places in the burg. read more
