TOTAL TOURIST TRAP! On our recent trip to Cancun we decide to venture out from our hotel and take a walk one evening. As we were walking one of the locals stuck a coupon for free appetizer in our hand for Mextreme. We turn to Yelp for a quick assessment and based on overall review decided to stop in. Dear fellow yelpers I totally don't agree with your overall review of 4 solid stars. The food is terrible and overpriced. Steak molcajete was lacking taste, guacamole was on the brown side of the avocado color wheel than on the green side and didn't look fresh. And we left the free appetizer alone after one bite. Mariachi band was a nice addition and another reason to reach into your pocket for a tip. Our waitress gets 5 solid stars. She was super bubbly and very helpful. read more

This is such a fun restaurant! It has a huge outdoor dining area and a live band plays on stage at night! The atmosphere is lively and the servers are just as good at performing as they are at attending to diners. They really let their personalities shine through and engage with guests which definitely enhances the experience. We had 4 margaritas (3 classic, 1 mango), queso fundido, enchiladas, vegetarian tacos, and a side order of rice. Everything was sooo good! The drinks are huge and not too strong or too sweet and the servers deliver them stacked on their heads. (see pic). It looks impossible but we saw one person deliver three at a time! The queso fundido is melty and creamy and the cheese really takes the flavor of the grilled peppers and onions. Tacos are served with veggies, lettuce, beans, tomatoes, corn, and cheese along with mild and spicy salsa. Enchiladas are presented beautifully with the colors of the Mexican flag and covered in delicious sauces and cheese. I especially enjoyed the tangy salsa verde. It tastes very fresh and it's finished with the perfect amount of lime. Prices are incredible, we spent ~$50 for 4 margaritas, one app, two entrees, and a side dish! The first night in Cancun my family and I came to Mextreme - oh boy, did it start the trip off to a great start! The atmosphere was just on a whole other level, everyone was dancing, singing & drinking (including my family and I). They had music playing the whole night and even the employees were dancing with the customers. Not to mention, the food was just delicious! (Especially, their al pastor and margaritas... it's their best selling thing there).. OHHH, and they make the best guacamole (step by step) right in front of you on your table in a molcajete. I'd say the only down side about this location would be its only outdoor seating. Luckily, the afternoon my family and I went it was quite humid, so it wasn't an issue. We both had tacos for lunch and margaritas. The guac was good too.. If your looking for decent and authentic Mexican food that is affordable then you must check this place out! The staff was super friendly and entertaining. The servers would walk around balancing glassware on their heads. Super fun! The menu has all the traditional stuff you'd expect. They start out with bringing you chips and two different salsas. The green one isn't too bad and not spicy, the red one is a bit spicy though. We started with the classic margaritas and some guacamole. The guacamole needed some salt, but other than that super fresh and delicious. The classic margarita was delicious and priced very nicely at about 10 pesos. For lunch i had the tacos el pastor. It came with 4 tacos and a side of limes, guacamole, and salsa. They also brought out A habanero sauce that was SUPER hot. Ton's of fun, a great location, and great food! Mextreme is an easy walk from most of the hotel zone and a $1 bus ride if you prefer. It's located on the northern "elbow" along with 50 million or so souvenir shops and a bunch of other restaurants. It's aimed at tourists and I'm sure I spotted a few locals eating there as well. My girlfriend and I walked here one day for drinks and lunch and drinks. The margaritas were generous and tasty. The beer was cold and beer-like. The fajitas were exceptionally tasty and suitable for at least two people. The place was clean and everyone there seemed to foster a fun attitude. One highlight was the server coming out with your drinks balanced on his head. Mexextreme isn't elegant by any stretch and is a place that you will enjoy. Overall experience was just average - portions were on the small size relative to the price, service was just average but most insulting was waiter second-guessing our bill and started to claim that we hadn't put enough USD to cover the bill despite adding on a 20% tip. I like to study the restaurants in the area where I will be vacationing before I go and Mextreme was one of the three or four restaurants in Cancun that really stood out. They seemed consistently popular for their food, service and atmosphere. It was not a coincidence that we had to nearly force our way through an already congested alley lined with empty restaurants, their desperate waiters crowding the walkway, while they attempted to con you into stopping at their establishments with cheap drinks and empty promises while their aggressive advances made you want to run as far away as possible. It seems that the soft sale is close to nonexistent in this part of the world and, while they may be able to force an occasional patron to stop, over pressuring people is not a good way to get repeat business. Fortunately, Mextreme is everything these restaurants are not. Their warm, relaxing approach, while rare in this part of the world, appears to be very successful and they tend to be consistently full and often have a line of waiting customers to show for it. We were seated at a nice outdoor table where a gentle breeze serve us well as a natural air conditioner. The night began with chips and a small variety of delicious salsas. Then our drinks were delivered to our table balanced on the waiter's head. We ordered their special guacamole, which is made at your table, for an appetizer and I ordered shrimp diablo while Ida ordered vegetable fajitas. The shrimp diablo was not actually on the menu but I had seen it in a very old picture attached to a review. Sometimes it pays to ask. Our wonderful waitress explained that no one had ordered shrimp diablo in something like four years and she was one of the only people that had been there long enough to remember how to make it. First our waitress brought out a rolling tray full of fresh avocados and the other ingredients to make our guacamole and the style she used to create our masterpiece was almost as awesome as the guacamole itself. I must admit, there was also something else very special about this guacamole, the avocados down there were amazingly delicious. I love avocados and these may have been the best I have ever eaten. Our guacamole was beyond amazing. Ida's order was delivered and then our waitress brought out another cart with all of the ingredients for my shrimp diablo and proceeded to create a masterpiece. Her professionalism and showmanship were mesmerizing and she even warned me when to get my camera ready for the perfect Kodak moment when the whole dish burst into an amazing giant flame. Not only was my Diablo shrimp fun to watch being made, it was extremely delicious and I completely savored every bite. Immediately after creating my culinary masterpiece before my eyes, our waitress hurried to join the others in a very entertaining dance routine. I wanted to order bananas flambé to finish off the evening but we were way too full so we headed back to our hotel for a night cap. I know this review is already long so I will quickly just say we returned for breakfast and I ordered a traditional Yucatan breakfast of cochinita pibil tacos and added a side order of sunnyside up eggs that came with beans and rice. It was by far my favorite breakfast while in Mexico. We also ordered a plate of fruit and Ida had some eggs with mole sauce she really loved. read more

We actually came here twice during our stay in Cancun. First time we came here it was a 3 star experience. We were literally standing right in front of the place when we were undecided on a quick bite to eat and decided to give them another shot and were promptly awarded with another 3 star experience. lol (+) Fun, festive atmosphere with employees that are pretty friendly! Slow...but friendly. (+/-) Food was pretty good, for the most part. Nothing really blew me away. Nothing made me hurl and curse my bad luck either. Chicken Burrito and Taco Party were high points, IMO. (-) On my second trip we were given our usual complimentary chips and salsa, same as last time. A few moments later, our waitress brought us a serving of guacamole and chips as well. I'm not a big guac fan, but it felt like a nice touch. It ends up we were charged 79 pesos for that, even though we never ordered it. 79 pesos is about $4.25 USD. I'm not going to complain or have a hissy fit over $4.25, but it still left a bad taste in my mouth. This place was alright. Had so much fun at this restaurant with its lively vibe! We sat outside, the decorations, service, and culture of the place really created an amazing and fun dine in service! Our drinks were carried out atop a server's head, talk about balance skills! Such a great show! The blended pina colada is yummyyy!! We ordered the grand mocajete to share, the shrimp, steak, and chicken in here are flavorful and cooked so well!! Great combination! Comes with tortilla and beans! We also ordered the fresh made table side guacamole - they cut up avocados, add in tomatoes, cilantro, and cheese and mash it all up by your table side!! Seriously, freshest guac I've ever had! This place is REALLY touristy! If that's not what you're in the mood for, go somewhere else for sure. Get out of the Hotel Zone, tbh. The food was so/so and the hostess told us that we wouldn't get our food or drink without a 40 minute wait (which ended up not being true so I'm confused as to why she told us this?). If you have a big group, there are large tables and a spacious seating area...so it is an option as long as you don't care about kitchy tourist stuff. If you order the Sexy Margarita, the server will bring it to you ON HER HEAD which is actually pretty hysterical and the drink itself is pretty decent. But to me, I would rather something more authentic and less catered to American tourists. All music the music I heard was in English. read more
