This place takes me immediately to Lancaster, Pennsylvania. It's decoration with the buggy inside of the icecream store makes it picturesque. They usually have the the flavor of the season. My favorite is chocolate. This time, however, I ordered a three scoops of cookie dough and it was delicious. I wish they would have waffle cones too. I love Meyers. I love the historic feel it has, and how it's a very down-to-earth place to get your ice cream fix (and to get fresh milk and eggs, too!) I think it's lovely that it's clear that this is a dairy store - everything is from the farm, and they offer fresh milk, cheese, butter, lemonade, etc... it feels like a homemade place. Their ice cream flavors are plentiful, and they're super generous with the servings. I only got a small, but was UNABLE to finish even though I had been super craving ice cream. The small is like three giant scoops. And it was so good!! There's only two downsides to this place. The first is that it's cash only... there's an ATM available, but gosh, it's still such a pain. It's forgivable since it's an old-fashioned place, but it's still something that annoys me a bit (and sometimes limits what I can get!) The second is that it is a little far. When my husband and I first moved to the area and came here, I told him that I was probably going to come every week to get milk and eggs here, since it's cheaper and it's local. But... after a few weeks of trying to do this, it's hard to justify a 30-45 minute roundtrip for just milk and eggs (and dangit, as good as the ice cream is, I'm not trying to eat it every single week when I'm just trying to do a grocery run!!) I highly recommend coming to check it out if you're in the area - it's a lovely place with some great ice cream. read more

Great little spot to check out on the outskirts of State College/Boalsburg. You might feel like you've stepped through a worm hole as this place looks like it is stuck in the past--- in the BEST way. Tiny little ice cream/dairy shop that is quite famous all around Centre County. Besides their ice cream, milk and cheese products, they also sell local favorites such as Herlocher's mustard, the Diner's stickybuns and various jams. I had not been in over 30 years and it is still the same unassuming, no frills, family operation, with bottled milk and steel carriers! Forget the Berkey Creamery, if you live in or around State College, please do yourself a favor and visit Meyer Dairy. As a PSU alum, I found this place by accident as I drove around the area. It looks super cute and inviting so I tried it. The place looks really old fashioned and feels so nostalgic. They make their own ice cream, cheese, and other dairy products, and everything is so delicious. I always went for ice cream and would occasionally buy cheese as well, and I've never had a bad experience. This ice cream will ruin all other ice cream for you. It's that good. It's particularly fun to visit Meyer Dairy in the late spring/early summer when you can order some ice cream and sit outside at a picnic table. It'll make you feel like a kid again! Maybe a nice lunch spot, but in no way is this ice cream better than the creamery. It melted so fast that within minutes I was left with just ice cream soup, and ridiculously sweet soup at that. What ice cream I did have was icy and textured like Hersheys or any other bucket brand. I'm guessing all the 5 stars just want to feel special for knowing the "niche" ice cream place. Meyer's is a perfectly awesome family-run dairy where you can get farm fresh milk and cheese and butter as well as a selection of other basic groceries. The milk is sold in returnable bottles, so this could be an ideal way to do your part for the environment while also improving the quality of some basic staples on your shopping list. If we could stop here, this review would be four stars. However... Meyer's also happens to sell some basic sandwiches and fried stuff, which is more like "feed" than food... Fairly typical of what you would expect from a frosty serv kitchen. Subtract one star. The homemade ice cream they serve is definitely a step up from soft serve, but is lacking in both the flavor and ingredients department. All of their add-ins are finely crumbled (no chunks) and the flavors are anything but rich. It's not bad, but it's not good either. So I can't exactly add stars here. The Butter Crunch lacked both buttery goodness and sugary crunch. The Coconut Chip was devoid of colada creaminess and the chocolatey flakes lacked the cocoa punch of a true chip. If there are good flavors here, there are some true misses as well. So while the lines are definitely shorter at Meyer's (and the $1.65 single is a true deal), it would seem to me that the Creamery serves the superior scoop. read more

Meyer's Dairy is, more or less, the locals ice cream shop. Berkey Creamery is the pop star choice. There truly is a reason for that. But, honestly, the ice cream is pretty close. At the Creamery, you will wait in line for upwards of 40 minutes on a busy day. Sometimes longer. All the while you are sweating out how much your parking is going to cost or worried about the 15 minute parking spot your vehicle occupies. At Meyers, private lot. Stay as long as you like. No pay for parking. Relaxed atmosphere. You may have to wait for 20 minutes on a busy day. The Creamery gives you a nostalgic Penn State student/alumni/fan experience. Not really glitsy but part of the cultural necessities of Penn State. You must go there. For this reason, Meyer's is a good option after an event or shopping trip for many locals and nearly locals. It is convenient to those that live south of SC and a favorite of many as an "on the way home" stop. With the Creamery, you have to park in a garage or far away. Then you have to walk to it. You usually have to pay something to get there. The ice cream choices at Berkey are often exotic and experimental. They are fun. The ice cream at Meyer's is usual a typical array of standard stuff. Occasionally they will throw something new in there. The taste of both places is pretty even. I may give an edge to The Creamery but locals will debate this for hours. There are picnic tables outside for the Spring and Summer. There is a small cafeteria set up and restaraunt inside. Meyer's does serve burgers and other grill food. Most of which are farm fresh. Prices are reasonable. Service is adequate. Good enough. But do you really come here for burgers or service? I don't know many that do. It's all about ice cream. So bottom line, Meyer's has its perks. It's one of those local gems you will hear about from locals but not really know about otherwise. It is slightly outside town right on the edge of State College and Boalsburg. If you have a little time on your visit to State College, try Meyer's. I can't imagine anyone not enjoying their ice cream. read more

This is the BEST icecream I have ever had. Ever. I mean -- ever, ever. In life. Period! And I'm not exaggerating! I mean, this icecream was so good that I risked my girlish figure and a bout with eczema to eat my entire (and very generous!) scoop of cookies-n-creme! I love small farmers and what they do for local communities. Meyer Dairy is a wonderful place - where else can you see the cows grazing right behind the store? Talk about farm to table. The staff is helpful and friendly, and the decor is pretty kitschy country. Meyer Dairy sells its milk in reusable bottles. You pick up glass bottles of fresh milk that you return time and time again! It helps keeps costs down and the milk cheap, and also promotes sustainable living. I wish I had a place near me where I could both pick up my milk and wave hello to the cows. The cheese is very tasty and creamy; I wish I got to taste a few more. But I have to agree with other Yelpers that the ice cream is pretty average. They have a great variety of flavors, but the ice cream itself was not very creamy and the flavors did not pop. I was disappointed in that, as well as the rest of the menu, but I just love the dairy itself. Just stick to milk, it does a body good! And boy is it good! read more

I used to come here a lot back when I went to State High.. it was so good here back then. To relive my memories, I came back here from NY after about 4 years.. but starting from the line to the cashier at the register... why are people so rude? It started with the guy standing in front of us... shaking his head in disapproval and looking at us with disgust... ummm... racism? or just hatred? We weren't doing anything.. just standing in line like everyone else. I mean I understand you don't see a lot of asians in this town as much as NY, but still.. C'mon!!! Seriously? Then, we get to the counter... and the girl at the register started acting super rude. You can tell she is miserable there and really hate being there. I have never seen someone more rude in my life. Every bit as good as the Creamery, without the lines. If you go for ice cream and frozen yogurt, the only downside is that they do not have dry ice for transporting. For the people claiming that this is the best ice cream they've ever eaten, I can only assume that you grew up in some kind of box where you were force-fed Dairy Queen all day long. I understand digging the mom-and-pop or local farm atmosphere of this place (and I do as well) but let's not make this place more than what it is. Lackluster food and ice-cream, and good (and cheap) milk. The ice cream is consistently mediocre (the chocolate tastes like vanilla with cheap chocolate syrup, for instance). And the food probably deserves 2 stars. I had a borderline disgusting chicken platter here, and while the portions are small (to be fair, it's really cheap as well), I couldn't bring myself to finish it. What I do like about this place, a lot, is that you can get a glass bottle of milk for under $2, providing you're returning a bottle. This place probably deserves 4 stars for the yummy milk, but the food and ice cream bring it down to 3 stars. In conclusion, nice atmosphere, good milk, lackluster ice cream and food, and a change from the creamery (whose ice cream is WAYYYYYY better). read more

Around since 1889, Meyers will take you back in time. 2 scoops of ice cream for $1.97... unheard of in today's society. I tried the chocolate peanut butter. Not extremely chocolaty or peanut buttery, but intensly creamy. It wasn't your average ice cream. Also they sell milk in glass jugs... like the 1950s, as a sense to take you back in time. They also have a small lunch menu if you are hungry while stopping in, but remember they dont accept cards, so have some cash on you! Great local place, a state college institution. You should go just to experience a real local dairy, not many of these left. The chocolate milk is as good as any I have had. The ice cream and sundaes are all good, with some of the classic hard to find flavors like tea berry. The staff is almost exclusively local high school aged kids so your service will vary depending on who is around that day. What is nice is that they are not gauging you, the price for milk and eggs are cheaper than the grocery stores. The ice cream is also a bargain compared to most other places. read more
