The doctor here, Dr. Tess - is unremarkable but I really don't have complaints about him as most of my care is done by endocrine and cardiology. His nursing staff tho is fairly useless. I had a terrible experience with Dr Mesmer. I was also shocked how terrible the customer service and the communication can be there. I had problem with referral. I feel my health suffered from blind confidence, unnecessary medicine treatment, poor judgement. I had a serious bad cough and my PCP was on vocation. l That is how l ended up with Dr Mesmer. I have visited my PCP for the same reason 2 weeks ago for the same issue. He prescribed some medicine and left for his vocation. I called the office to ask for referral to see a specialist. The office told me l have to schedule another appointment to get the referral. I assume they have no way to reach my PCP??? Well, l took a day off and went to get my referral. Now it comes my experience with Dr Mesmer. Dr Mesmer gave me a totally different reason for my cough and she thought it was just allergy. I went to the CVS and found my pills on the shelves. At the appointment, she promised she would refer me if my symptom did not improve. After taking pills for two weeks, nothing improved at all! I waited patiently and gave her all my trust. After two weeks, l had to call her office. The nurse went to ask her. She told me Dr Mesmer simply asked me to take pills for a whole month before she will consider referral. At that time, l would have been coughing seriously for 1 month and half. I would have been on allergy pills for no reason for a month. Everyone who has taken allergy pills knows that it should relieve the symptom at least by 50 percent SOON! Now it is about the service there. After l did my research and scheduled the specialist myself anyway. A nurse at MGH downtown told me that l don't even need a referral. That is totally different information. Why was l told differently at the first place? Why was l scheduled to see Dr Mesmer? I moved on right after l got the phone call. My new PCP solved this issue in a week. My lung was already a bit infected at that time. After taking some medicine, my cough went away in a week. I had a cold. No allergy! Ironically, one month after l was healed, l got a call from MGH downtown office. They asked me whether l wanted to schedule an appointment with my PCP. I mailed my PCP right after l contacted Dr Mesmer, l explained my situation. No one cared at that time. I feel l can never count on medical service like that. I cannot feel happier that l moved on in time. read more

The receptionist "Dione" was EXTREMELY RUDE and they would not schedule an appointment for me to see my PCP. Speaking with her was an extremely negative experience and I am very disappointed with MGH downtown because they do not let you schedule appointments with YOUR DOCTOR unless they believe your "reason" for the appointment is sufficient. I like my doctor, but I would not recommend downtown primary care to others due to reception being incapable of completing their job, which is to SCHEDULE appointments. read more

I was really lucky to find such a great office for my medical needs. I haven't had a PCP in about 15 years, so I thought it was about time. Dr. Lam is very nice, has a great bedside manner, and she was able to answer all my questions. She's incredibly friendly and made me feel very comfortable during the physical. Dr. Mesmer and her staff don't communicate. Very unorganized office. Dr. Mesmer pushes tests and vaccines that aren't necessary. I don't live near MGH Downtown and she would not work with me to accept normal Mammogram or other test results from another hospital. I think it is all about money. Her credentials do not meet up with what you would expect from a Massachusetts General Hospital doctor nor does the inefficiency and poor communication within her office. If you had a serious medical issue you would not want to rely on that team properly treat or properly diagnose your issues. read more

I wouldn't even give them a full star. This office is NOT the normal Mass General. They have terrible customer service, they do not spend any time with their patients. You wait FOREVER to get an appointment for a physical (required yearly) and they spend a mere ten minutes on you. They are not willing to work with their customers for scheduling or availability - and if you cant make your physical they wont fill your prescriptions (it is birth control I have taken for over five years now, it's not like I am asking for some serious medication). Generally easy to get an appointment for an emergency, she responds quickly to questions on Patient Gateway and she gives us really good care. Five stars from us!!! read more

The doctors and nurses here are great but some of the other staff member are not. One of the ladies at the front desk is so rude and always makes me feel like a pain in her ass for bothering her, She never even looks up to talk to you. It is really hard to get an appointment here, and the only time I was able to see my own doctor was on my first visit and I've been going here for a few years. The waiting room is always almost empty but I always wait forever for my appointment and it takes them forever to send in Rxs. I'm totally fed up and am trying to find a new office to go to. It's a shame tho because I really liked my doctor. read more

Dr. Barbara Holbert has been my primary care physician since 1991--before she was a part of this practice. She is a warm and thoughtful doctor who actually listens to what I say. My husband sees Dr. Christopher Tess, and has found him very good, too. Like the first reviewer, I have found the office personnel very responsive and helpful even as they juggle a huge number of patients on the phone and in person. Typically I have been able to get a same-day appointment when something required immediate attention. Using the website patientgateway.org has been very efficient even when my doctor has been out of town; someone has always responded to my emails within a day. read more

I have to say, for those of you who read my reviews... I give positive reviews where it's deserved. Dr. Tess is my PCP, but I see the resident (formerly Dr. Miller - now at GI associates at BIDMC) and now Dr. Lee. All 3 are outstanding. I have to say, Dr. Tess, Dr. Miller, and Dr. Lee actually give a crap and follow up very well. They are organized, pay attention to detail, and don't write me off. I have some GI issues, and they've been incredibly supportive. This weekend, I had an emergency appendectomy .. and Dr. Lee has been extremely communicative and supportive answering all my questions. I cannot express my gratitude enough to Dr Lee and Dr Tess for being very responsive to me while I was in the hospital (before and after my emergency appendectomy) and post-op after I was discharged. And I'm sure I'm not their highest priority patient. They still make me feel like I'm a unique patient and not a number. Thank you Dr. Tess & Dr. Lee! (If you need a GI specialist - I would recommend Dr. Sam Miller at BIDMC - he was great when he was my PCP at MGH downtown primary care). I left my primary at BIDMC and GI there as I felt like a number, more than a person. I love the Brigham Mass General Newton Wellesley network. TERRIBLE customer service. For someone who works daily with customers/people and answers phones, I would have never sounded like that/treat a patient how I was treated. I just called to schedule a "sick visit" to get looked at for a rash I found on my body this morning. The girl who answered (who I assume is one of the receptionists at the front desk) had a low, monotone 'what do you want, I don't want to be here' voice on. She told me there were no spots for me to be seen. Instead of following up with "but let me try and see what I can do" or "but tomorrow we have this and this time available", she just sat on the phone. It was ME who said "Hello?" and then continued asking when I could be seen. I used to work in a doctors office years ago. You're supposed to leave a few spots open on the schedule for people like myself who are going to call in morning of and need to be seen. Whether it be a cough, rash, or other symptoms. This girl sounded like a 15 year old teenager whose parents were waking her up for school and she didn't want to get up. Miserable attitude which called for a miserable experience for me. read more

This review is for Dr. Melinda Mesmer ,her nurse Judith Leamy and the staff . Worst experience in my 45 years of living. I came to Dr. Mesmer for a problem . She told me to start taking prescription pills but would not tell me anything abt my condition or anwser any of my questions abt the pills or my condition. I told her I had lots of questions and reservations abt taking pills but she just said I must take these pills and would not address my concerns. I tried getting information from her nurse Judith Leamy as well and she would not talk to me abt it either .Judith is a very condescending person and treated me SO poorly and shes so so cold and heartless.She literally reads something from a script in her hands which entails a series of questions , ( in a horrible accent which makes it that much more annoying) and then diagnoses you over the phone after 5 minutes of speaking to you, making you feel ten times worse. I told her some confidential legal information that she kept pressing me/hounding me for and she exploited me and the subject matter (she admitted she leaked out my confidential info) . It was then explained to me by the receptionist ,that's just how Mass General works.,,,you read your test results on a Patient Portal but if you want to know anything more, you have to be "self sufficient" and google/research your condition and talk to your pharmacist abt the drugs and get pamphlets from him/her . This is how Mass General works? For real?????????/ I am not allowed to know abt my condition or abt my drugs they have put me on ? I have to research it myself????????Needless to say because all I do now is "research" my condition and the drugs, I have gotten myself into more of a frenzy and am now experiencing panic attacks from all this . I think its plain ROTTEN to do this to a patient. Mass General seems to justify it though and thinks this is acceptable . These nurses really need to find a new career path if this is how they talk to and treat patients. And for Dr. Mesmer, STAY CLEAR away from her. I am not a case number , I am a HUMAN BEING and deserve to be treated as such . I deserve compassion .I have been put thru so much trauma from her these last 2 weeks . All this "blaming the victim" garbage they have done, does not set well with me. I honestly am beside myself and have terminated her as my DR. I only hope she never has to be on the other side of the operating table so to speak, and have somebody treat her the way she did me. These Drs need to take a course on humanity and learn how to treat patients with kindness and care. They somehow lose there ability to do so along the way. read more
