EDITED to ADD: After all the below, they MISDIAGNOSED ME. This place is the worst practice I've ever heard of or dealt with. If you value your health or sanity, run away. This is a negative star place. I went to this practice for help dealing with what they said was a torn labrum and rotator cuff tendonitis. I was treated like a drug addict when I asked for a refill of my pain medicine with a different address (i was moving which i told them) from their own surgeons (who refilled it, even though apparently it is required to go through your PCP). After, they told me I didnt comply with the "MA narcotic form", which it turns out they NEVER gave to me or had me sign after I called and wrote four requests to see my copy. I never even knew this form existed because pain pills dont exist in my normal life. This is entrapment at best, leading me to make honest mistakes in their area of "expertise". NP Lisa aka Elisabeth Herron and Dr. Marcello Campos (the "CHIEF" of internal medicine, somehow) deserve to be fired. Campos specifically laughed in my face and said he is not willing to help me when I was begging him for help because I was unable to go one day without breaking down sobbing in pain. I submitted to all of their tests, including a $459 drug test they made me take that was ordered incorrectly (and came back CLEAN, and two weeks late) when Lisa forgot to order it before going on vacation. Empathy is beyond these two. When I told Campos i would complain about him, he laughed again and told me his boss was the CEO - as if that would scare me. I asked Vanguard to rectify the situation, and they doubled down. I've received no apology, and only part of the money back that I should have gotten. I had to call out of work multiple days due to agonizing pain, and Campos' only idea was that I was "extra sensitive to pain". There's so much more I could say and none of it is good. This place is run by an egotistic, dangerous group of people who's sole human emotion is GREED. Unless you want to deal with a daily barrage of some of the nastiest people you'll ever encounter, I implore you to go anywhere else. A witch doctor, a magician, your aunt who sages the house, i dont know...but I do know you'll get better care outside these walls than in them. I complained to the BBB and am submitting a MA state board complaint as well. I dont need any added note on here from HV stating that you "took my complaint seriously". Just do your job or get out of your patient's way. read more

I have my PCP visits at the Copley Sq. location of Harvard Vanguard, but see dermatology and behavioral health specialists in Post Office Square. Although it's not as close to home as Copley, it's easy to get to by Green line (or Orange, if that's your thing). In terms of the quality of care I've received, I've been quite pleased. All of the practitioners I've seen have been friendly, caring, and as helpful as they could be. I'm also impressed by the range of services offered through this location, which go beyond traditional medical care to include mind body training sessions and acupuncture. My only complaint about this location is that it can be an administrative hassle to schedule an appointment. Initially I struggled with getting the right people and referrals. Getting your first appointment with a specialist can take months. Now that I'm in the system, that's better, but I've had at least one appointment time get mixed up. They also remind you about your appointment several times by phone, so be prepared for multiple calls in the days leading up to your visit. read more

I drop my hubby here often, about once a week or once every two weeks. They're really fast and do a great job, he always feels better for a week or more and has real bad back issues. High priced but we can always get in on a whim without an appointment - $75 per adjustment. read more

This review is for lab. My go to lab is Copley location but because I switched to a new job, Post Office Square is closer. There's always line at Copley location so i was expecting to spend some time waiting at PO Square. I went at 1PM and i was the only person there. I was greeted immediately and the entire process took 5 mins! From signing in to getting blood drawn. I was thrilled and the lab tech's super friendly. She made the process smoother for me (I hate needles and asked if i can scream) and she did it so well i only felt a tiny pinch. Now I wish the doctors are accepting new patients so i can switch over to this location. read more

This place (Internal Medicine) charges the patient for things that are covered under insurance. This has happened numerous times where I have a visit that is covered and I receive a bill. Their patient services and coding person acknowledges that these things should be covered but does nothing about it. I am sick and tired of these sleezy companies taking advantage of patients who already pay for insurance. They've just lost a patient who will gladly take their business elsewhere. After recently moving to Boston, I chose Harvard Vanguard because it was close to my office. With Dr. Diamond not taking new patients, I was farmed out to a young associate. While this is usually fine, the young woman really couldn't know less about human decency and medicine despite her education. The word "cost effective" was used probably 7 times in a 15 minute visit. She even refused to fill my prescriptions. Horrible experience and will not return. I would never go back. read more

I've been here thrice, and I'm happy to say that the positive experiences outweigh the negative. Watch, young hostile grasshopper Davis Square HVMA, and learn. Dr. Dy, the dermatologist, is so sweet and friendly you almost don't believe she's a doctor. She was caring and thorough, chipper and cute. Could it be that Grey's Anatomy, in all of their hamfisted patient/doctor issue metaphors, character assassination, and drecky slopfests have actually gotten one thing right? Dermatology really IS the happiest place on earth? Dr. Georgia seems like she's a really nice person, but has fallen victim to the new wave of talking directly to the screen while she asks you intimate questions, and can barely hear the response over her typing. I understand that this must be a new occupational hazard of electronic charting, and lord knows I'm not about to start hauling my medical records hither and yon, but still...bad juju. Her lovely smile masked a kind of humorless and robotic personality, and I decided to continue my PCP search then and there. And hooray! Because I found Academy-award-winning doctor Helen Hunt. Dr. Hunt was friendly, competent, chatty, and very aware that the computer was not a third person in the room. She kicks it old school, with the light in the ears and everything, and when you lean back and look at the ceiling, there's a poster of a beach in the Bahamas. Nice touch. read more

I like my PCP at Harvard Vanguard. She's nice, but she's never actually helped me. I find I'm usually better at diagnosing myself. I saw a therapist there for a day, and she was terrible in comparison to my past one. Never bothered to go back. The interior of the facility is kinda gross, minus the lobby which has a cool atrium. But the location is super convenient for me. However, all three stars of my review go to the lab nurse Ursula. She's totally awesome. I had to get blood drawn on a regular basis in the last year and hanging out with her for the 10 min it took usually made my day. She's hilarious, and totally gentle and professional with the needle. I highly recommend if you have to get lab work done, you single her out and try to get her to do it. Say hi for me! read more

Experiences here are inconsistent, and in general they do a great job of making you feel like just another cog in the medical industrial complex wheel. I've had some great doctors and PAs here and some not so great ones. Generally I've had consistent issues with billing--getting invoices without any information about what they're for, after I've already paid my co-pay. Late fees for invoices I never get or that I think are included in the other invoices I've gotten. It's a pain. Most recently, I used the online system to request an annual exam appointment with the PCP I've been seeing for a few years now. I got a message back that she's moved her practice down to Quincy. Don't you think that's something you should, I don't know, TELL your existing patients? It made me feel pretty bad, honestly. Other doctors I see never seem to schedule follow-up annual exams with me, so I've got to do that myself. I know, it's not the worst thing, but I'm spoiled from the family practices I grew up going to. You know, the kind that sent postcards to remind you to schedule an appointment. Did you know you have to make an appointment to go to any Harvard Vanguard urgent care? Kind of defeats the purpose of an URGENT care unit. Sounds just like a regular doctor's office to me. Just a musing. I went to this location because it was convenient to me. It is no longer convenient, so I'm not going to go out of my way to keep going there--they are certainly not going out of theirs to keep my business. read more

I did not like the specialist I saw here; she really rubbed me the wrong way. One of her first questions was, "Why did you come here for care--why didn't you just look for someone at the location where your other doctor is?" Um, thanks, I'm happy to meet you, too. She wanted me to schedule a follow-up appointment on my way out. I did not make another appointment here, and never got a follow-up call, nothing. The worst part was getting an EKG done here. I'm a little shy when it comes to undressing in front of people. The EKG tech was getting annoyed with me for trying to cover my chest, and when I told her that I felt shy, she looked down at me and then made a comment about the size of my breasts! I was so surprised, I didn't know whether it was disgusting, funny, or just plain wrong. What the heck?!?! Who does this??? Even though I liked the PCP I had through Harvard Vanguard (different location), I never went back to any of the Harvard Vanguard offices. read more

I wouldn't normally write a review for a doctor's office (unless I had an absurdly horrible experience). However I love this place so much I'm writing one! This is probably the best run medical center I've ever had the fortune of coming across. They run it so that your PCP can refer you to a specialist that is in your network AND in the same building! AWESOMEEEEE. My PCP here is Dr. Chloeanne Georgia and while at times she can be a bit...impersonal (ie asking questions while staring at the computer screen, oh the woes of modern technology) she tries so hard to make your experience as good as possible. I once came in with a really strange problem, and, being sympathetic of my terrible insurance ($50 copay! Weee!) she tried to garner as many opinions from other doctors during a single visit. AMAZING! Additionally, I'm a big fan of Dr. Jessica Wong and Karen Bikofsky, NP, ESPECIALLY Karen! She is sooo helpful and understanding and really takes her time asking questions and hearing your concerns. She is incredibly accommodating of the fact that I have terrible insurance and crams in as much as she can into a single visit. I really feel like she cares about her patients and that, my friends, is RARE. Big big fan! read more

This review is specifically for OB/GYN for Susan Ryan CNM (formerly Susan Kamin?). I would not recommend Susan to anyone I know and wish I could go back and erase the whole experience. Some people are very good at their jobs. Some people care a lot about their job. This is true across all professions, but it should be more prevalent in the medical field. While I don't know how much Susan Ryan cares about her job, she is certainly not good at it. I don't want to disclose my medical history, but I felt she was judgmental, provided me with one-sided information, and flat out refused care. The treatment I was requesting was a standard procedure that would have taken her 5 minutes, however, I felt she was refusing it on personal bias grounds. Ive had a number of good doctor's at HV but this experience has soured me and made me seriously consider going elsewhere. At the very least I will never make an appointment with this woman. If you're visiting OB/GYN at HV I would recommend Rachel Bradbury and Dr. DeGroot, both of whom are wonderful. read more

One star for the pharmacy, no stars for anything else. I hate this place. Friendly? Yes. But in terms of actual helpful and beneficial health care, I've had better luck diagnosing myself online or seeing the amazing chiropractor Dr. Barnes in East Boston. I have had the podiatrist tell me I was going to be in pain for the rest of my life (2 visits to the chiropractor fixed me), I've had the billing office repeatedly mess up my bill, even after a phone call from my insurance, I've had the nurse practitioner "diagnose" my knee pain by saying "here is a prescription for IB Profen." And don't get me even started on the system for making an appointment. When you call for an appointment the nurse calls you back to make sure you're "really sick" and then you may, or may not get to see an actual doctor (more then likely it will be a Nurse Practitioner). The actual doctor will be nice, but will more then likely, as in my case, not even glance at your suspicious moles, but rather tell you to go see a dermatologist, and to top it off, when you ask to see a dermatologist for leg vein treatment (That's the person you see in California and other parts of Mass) the nurse and scheduler gets confused and calls the general practitioner who then refers you to a surgeon at a hospital. Are you freaken' kidding me? Don't waste your time or energy or risk your heath by going to this shim sham operation. read more

I called the Post Office Square office because my usual office was booked and I couldn't get an appointment. The person I spoke with on the phone would not schedule me for an appointment and told me I could only go back to my main office. She made detailed judgments on my condition from looking at my previous visits instead of trying to help me. She had no sympathy for the fact that I was injured and needed treatment. She wouldn't even tell me if there were appointments available. She was not friendly and was very accusatory. I'm sure hope the people that answer the phones are clinicians or they are going to face a potential problem from patients who might be denied proper care. Safe to say I'll never be calling this location again. read more

As a child, I went to the same doctors until I was well into my twenties. They were as much apart of my life as my family was, considering the amount of healthy problems I had when I was younger. But as I grew healthy, I since moved away from home finding that discovering good health care is harder than it sounds. How my mom did it, I don't know. When I came to Boston two years ago, I felt overwhelmed with my choices. But frustrated just the same with the amount of wait time it takes to get seen in this city. My first choice was Tufts Medical Center, which promptly made me decide that maybe I didn't know how to pick a good health care provider. Then, after getting pretty ill and calling what seemed like a million places, I was able to get an appointment at Harvard Vanguard with the snap of a finger. I found that not only can I base my PCP out of that location, they have a dermatology department, pharmacy, and many others wonderful providers. That's where I met Dr. Dy, my dermatologist. They explain everything in depth for me and are incredibly kind to boot. I had a procedure there recently that I was a little nervous for. However, I knew I that I was in great hands, which brought me a great sense of ease. They made sure to make me comfortable. I always leave feeling taken care of, never frustrated, and always sure I'll receive the best of care. It is important to go to someone you trust, and I trust this location 100%. read more

I think i've been to every branch of Harvard Vanguard, and i've always had a good experience. Most recently I paid my first visit to the downtown office to see Dr. Dy in dermatology. After an intial appointment, she determined i'd need to have a mole removed. I am REALLY afraid of needles and have never had any kind of procedure like this, so i was very anxious. She was fantastic, as was the nurse who assisted her. She'd made several notes in my chart about my fear, so i didn't have to remind her (which tends to make me panic even worse). she noticed my boyfriend in the waiting room, and told me he could come in with me, and went to fetch him for me. that was a huge relief and i really appreciated her thoughtfulness. she made something very scary for me not nearly as bad as i anticipated. i was out of there in 15 minutes just like she promised, and she made sure i knew exactly what to expect. i highly recommend her! read more

I went here today for an eye exam. I had never been here before. My boss highly recommended this place as we both have Harvard Pilgrim insurance. The place is very nice inside - very neat and clean. It's an old building, but you can tell the inside was remodled maybe 2-3 years ago. A little paperwork to sign at their front desk, and a $20 co-pay, and I was on my way up to the 8th floor for my appointment. I saw Doctor Brown today, and she was awesome. Very detailed and thorough and nice. She did the whole eye-exam, including dialation of my pupils, and explained a ton of things to look out for in the future, as well as advice on contacts and glasses. I thought she was just great. Love the location - right in the heart of where I work. Glasses store downstairs - guess I better go check it out!!! I have an appointment to get fitted for contacts in a few weeks from this same place/doctor. I look forward to it. read more

I contacted the office of my primary care provider at Harvard Vanguard, Dr. Uhlmann, for a routine referral to an ophthalmologist. I was only allowed to speak to a nurse practitioner, not to the doctor. I explained the situation and informed the N.P. that I had already selected the ophthalmologist I wanted to see -- one outside Harvard Vanguard -- and needed a referral to them. The N.P. informed me that she would have to "check with Dr. Uhlmann to see if that was OK" (i.e., "that" being a referral to a specialized outside of Harvard Vanguard) and would call me back. She never called back. I subsequently sent a written follow-up request through Harvard Vanguard's patient portal, asking once again for a referral and stating unequivocally that it would not be acceptable for my primary care physician to limit me to seeing specialists inside their practice; which specialists I choose to see is my decision, not my doctor's. It is now 15 days later, and I have received no response to my written request. This is not the first trouble I have had with Harvard Vanguard. They failed to contact me in a timely fashion to schedule my routine physical. They failed to contact me in a timely fashion to schedule my annual skin check (I am fair-skinned and sun-burned several times as a child have had several weird moles removed over the years, so I am expected to get an annual skin check). They sent me to a sleep specialist for help with my insomnia who was no help at all and I'm fairly certain completely misdiagnosed the root cause of my insomnia. There have been other treatment areas in which I've been dissatisfied. I suppose Harvard Vanguard is a good choice if you are young and healthy and their locations are convenient for you, but I wouldn't recommend it for anybody who actually has medical issues. read more

Although I usually have good experiences with Harvard Vanguard this review is specific to Dr. Erin Jospe. She's amazing. She's very caring, genuine, easy to talk to and doesn't mess around. I have a chronic illness which results in me seeing specialists frequently. Dr. Jospe always knows what's going on with my health even if she hasn't seen me in a while. I'm really glad to have her as my doctor and this comes from someone who, because of said medical issue, has seen a great many doctors over the past 7 years. Oh...and if you have to have blood taken the employees at this location are nicer than over at Kenmore. read more

HVPOsq is the place closest to where I work so I've gone there for years, but there is a price to pay for convenience - quality. Oh yes, they do have appointments available every day if you need to see someone immediately, isn't that great? But when you get in, will the person know what they're doing? From the Dr who told me I definitely didn't have a blood clot but since I was being such a drag they will give me the test (I did) to the gynecologist who nearly inserted the wrong IUD in me (I had to speak up from the stirrups) to the dr who diagnosed me from across the room (why not examine me?) with gall bladder disease (wrong) they all work here. I'm not saying the whole place is a quackfest: nutrition, phlebotomy (as noted in other post below they are great), pharmacy and some primary care are all fine, but I've grown tired of trying to find the needles in the haystack of this place. Kenmore sq. practice is nearby and full of far more expert people. Otherwise, you can find some great people at POSq if you look, but man, who has that kind of time? And who wants to risk their health? They won't refer you outside of their system, and that just means you're doomed to often see mediocre doctors who are very available for a good reason. Great for the sniffles, otherwise - run. Update 2010. I had an emergency and had to return to get some care at HVPOSq as my new dr couldn't see me. I forgot what a badly run place this is. From the receptionist who left me a message at work with no phone number and no indication exactly what office she was calling from to let me know my appointment was canceled (didn't find out till I got there, because they wouldn't just leave me a message saying that - then why call, really?) to the complete lack of follow up by the dr who prescribed something but for 2.5 weeks I still can't get at my pharmacy because of their foot dragging. What is with this place? So glad I am at Beth Israel now. It is amazing how messed up this place is. Surely stays in biz due to location. read more

I don't often leave reviews. In fact the only reason I'm leaving this one is because I just left one for another fantastic place and realized that I never left one for the folks over at Harvard Vanguard. Mostly, my review is for Dr. Uhlmann. She is beyond sweet and personable. I was going through a super difficult time in my life when I saw her for the first time and she did everything she could to help me get through the issues I was experiencing at the time. Let's just get this out of the way; I am terrified of doctors. I am obese and have encountered so many doctors who are judgmental or attribute every problem I have to being fat. Dr. Uhlmann didn't even mention my weight until I brought it up with her. She is super compassionate and answered all of my questions, gave me treatment, and congratulated me on my weight loss efforts. Many other doctors have refused to give me any other treatment than a direction to lose weight. I have also had good experiences here in the lab where they were able to take blood on the first draw which has maybe happened once before in my life. My boyfriend also goes to a doctor here and has had equally fantastic experiences with the doctors he has seen. Its a great place to go and convenient with locations all over the Boston area and many different specialties in one building. Top notch. read more

Super rude. I had to book a physical out around 8 weeks and apparently the doctor was "on vacation" that week so they made me reschedule a few weeks out but I couldn't make it so I had them cancel. I got super busy with work so I tried to reschedule later - and they told me due to the "number of cancellations" I couldn't see the MD directly. You mean YOUR cancellation? There must be better doctors around, do not see this one. read more

I recently went to see a doctor in the behavioral sciences department. My company offers 3 free visits under their EAP program and i was happy to see Harvard Vanguard Milk Street on the list of participants as I was already a patient there. When making the appointment, I mentioned my EAP was told it was accepted. Before my appointment, I handed the woman at the desk my EAP form and where to bill to and she said she already had a copy and would take care of it. After seeing the doctor, I decieded to check one last time and just leave my form. I was then told that the EAP program was not accepted. Are you kidding me? I checked 3 times. I then was told I would get a call back on Thursday 3/9. It is now Friday afternoon and I still don't have a call back. Horrible Horrible Horrible customer service. I will take this further if i get a bill in the mail as I am NOT paying it. read more

I have been seeing Dr. Herron for several months now and quite honestly she has changed my life. She is extremely kind, smart, not judgmental at all and a doctor you would legitimately want to be friends with. The turnaround time for responses and results is unheard of; she is just that good. I just tried to make an appointment. Not only were all but one of the people i spoke to on the phone rude during this process, they are booking so far out that its not even possible to use these services. Being forced to use social services like Planned Parenthood because a doctors office cant fit you in without four months lead time is pretty absurd. i understand that medical services in the US are racket/scam and the system is hemorrhaging but it would be nice if the people answering the phones were in any way sympathetic or polite. Years ago, when i had the patience and time to wait an eon for services, when i got into the office the RNs here were always nice. It feels pretty weird to "review" a gynecologist, but Dr. Mark Faucher is just the sweetest! I was living somewhere else last year so I hadn't seen him in two years and he still remembered random details about me, my job, etc. His assistant (I can't remember her name, so sorry!) is super sweet, too; I went in for the first appointment of the day last week and was feeling really tense for some reason - as soon as I walked into the exam room, Dr. Faucher and his assistant made me feel right at ease. The exam/pap-smear was ridiculously quick and they both chatted with me the whole time, to keep my mind off of the unpleasantness. I'm very grateful for doctors like him, who clearly love what they do and make a not-so-fun annual check-up into something that I can almost look forward to! read more

I was absolutely impressed by HVMA! Recently I began feeling cramps in my chest and I was worried about exactly what it was. I am still new to the Boston area and I do not have a doctor! So I was a little nervous but I came here for an EKG, the nurse was extremely nice, and I did not feel uncomfortable at all. Next I met the doctor (please forgive me for not remembering her name I think I was too busy worrying about what she was going to tell me about the EKG results.) She was really nice and made sure that she answere every question that I asked. I was prescribed some medicine to take temporarily for a muscle spasm and the pharmacy was located downstairs. I did not have to wait for the medicine it was ready as soon as I made it back to the main floor. read more

I went to this place because it is literally 5 minutes away from my work. It is absolutely horrible. I used to volunteer at a free clinic while in high school, and this is so much worse. I tried getting a medication consult appointment for more than a week, and despite promising to call me back, their scheduling people never did! I find it absolutely unexceptable that when a patient calls asking for a medication consult for a serious illness no one calls them back. My impression is that the folks who do their scheduling and the physicians are absolutely overwhelmed and are being pressured to do too much in too little time. I made an appointment for my annual OBGYN exam and without informing me, they scheduled me with a nurse practitioner. While typically I have had great experiences with nurse practitioners, the woman who did my exam was absolutely clueless. Stay away from this place. The convenience is not worth it. read more

This review is about Dr. Jessica Wong specifically, although I have also seen other practitioners at Harvard Vanguard's Milk St location (optometry, etc.). Dr. Wong is a newer doctor (a couple years out of medical school, I think), but she comes across as very confident and knowledgeable. She's also very sweet, doesn't seem rushed, takes the time to listen to concerns, and also is reasonable with referrals. I was hesitant to select such a new doctor, but she was one of the few accepting new patients and had the first available appointment. I'm glad I ended up with her! read more

I still love this place. But, I have to say that after going to pick up my Rx for antibiotics (for a serious stomach bug...H. Pylori or something). I thought the box full of little blister packs (meds for morning and evening separated) to just toss in my bag. BUT, the antibiotics were going to cost me $440.00!!! Yes, I have a high deductible, but more than $400 for antibiotics?!?! I have to give kudos to the staff at the pharmacy for accepting my utter (and unpleasant) reaction. I asked them to ask somebody if there was an alternative that didn't cost so much. Half an hour later I picked up my meds...for $99.00. WHY was there more than a $300 difference for the same meds (but in little bottles rather than the cute little blister packs)? Furious!!!! I'll continue to see them for medical care but I'm going to second guess everything from the pharmacy. read more
