I have eaten here for years and the food an service is always great. This past Wednesday I was having one of those days where I didn't know what I wanted to eat. My mouth was not geared up for any of the usual great Mexican food that I was used to eating, so I thought that I would try something different on the menu. You don't usually think about Chicken Alfredo when you are at a Mexican restaurant but I decided to try it. It was a good choice. It was the best chicken alfredo that I have ever eaten in my life. The pasta was cooked perfectly the chicken was excellent, the sauce had just a little spice to it and the green peppers and tomatoes topped it off. I don't know what they added to the alfredo sauce to make it taste so good but I know that I will never eat it anywhere else but Mi Carreta. It was the best meal that I have had in months! read more

TL;DR: Go to Taqueria El Paso in Boone or Las Isabelas in Hickory. Continue for full review. I have never been served sugary Ranch dressing to dip my tortilla chips in. This must be a Southern thing... and it's gross. The food was edible, but definitely not quality or authentic. It was very bland. The shredded chicken in our dishes was canned, not fresh. My husband received the wrong dish but decided to eat it anyway. As a bonus, some jerk at a neighboring table was having a loud convo on speaker. Waste of $30+. Server was nice. read more

The first time we ate at Mi Carreta, we honestly chose them because they actually stay open (maybe 30 mins to an hour) longer than the other Mexican food places in the area. I didn't know that they even existed until someone in my family suggested it. The restaurant is really clean and offers prompt and friendly service. The food is pretty good, just maybe not as spicy or as seasoned as the competitors. I also noticed that the portion sizes are smaller as well. We had a good experience overall, my sister in law loves this restaurant, (it's her favorite) and we would totally eat here again if we want a late Mexican dinner. read more

This was probably the best experience I've had at a Mexican restaurant. Our waitress was so wonderful and attentive. My coworker and I had just put in a long day of work, so we treated ourselves to dinner and drinks. I've ordered take out from here before with no problem. The food is good. I called in an order the day before a holiday. My bad for not checking the order nor registering the charge in connection to the food I ordered. The a la carte menu lists an order of 3 tamales. I ordered 2 orders(6 tamales). I also ordered 1 order of chilies rellenos(3 chilies). I looked yesterday when I got home. Lots of sauce and melted cheese. It was hard to tell numbers. But after a night in the fridge I Just opened the containers. 1 tamale. 1 chili. No where was 1 tamale or 1 chili offered. The a la carte items came in 3s. I st least should have had 3 of each. For this I was charged $14.11. Very disappointed to not have tamales for my guests today. read more

Since this place is just a few blocks from my sister's house in Lenoir and is pretty much the only non chain Mexican food within miles I usually eat here a few times when I am in the area visiting family. The food is pretty good, albeit a bit nonstandard for Mexican style food. They have the usual burritos, enchiladas, tacos, etc. I like the tostadas and they make a sort of "kitchen sink" vegetarian quesadilla that is quite tasty. The chips and salsa are awesome; we usually go through several bowls of these. They come with a creamy green sauce of some kind that is pretty yummy as well; it works on both the chips and on your dinner. Refried beans and rice accompany every entree. I don't think they have black beans available but the waiters have always assured me the refried beans are vegetarian. There is also a kid's menu with hamburgers and french fries and the like if you have kids that don't eat Mexican food with you. I'd recommend avoiding anything sweet, including the margaritas. Last time I was there we tried several of the desserts (sopapillas, cheese cake, flan) and every one of them had super sweet chocolate sauce, colored sprinkles, and whipped cream on them and it was just way too sugary. The margaritas are also cloyingly sweet with none of the limey tartness that a good margarita should have. They do have a good selection of Mexican beers so stick with those and you should be fine. The restaurant itself is not fancy but there are booths large enough to seat six people and the wait staff have always been cheerful and friendly. Sometimes the service is a bit slow but the place is usually fairly busy. If you are looking for something other than the icky chain places up the road a piece, this isn't a bad choice. read more

I've had to cut back on going to Mi Carreta's, ever since they cut their lunchtime hours to 2:30 pm -- plus once they came out with their "new" menus, they have very little fare to offer that's under, say, $7-bucks. Plus, it seems as though they've lost some of their best wait staff -- who used to gladly toss in a jalapeño without charging you. I used to go there at least 3 times a month, but now I might go once when friends want to meet up there. Re; new waitstaff, I recently went in, sat down, and the waiter said "would you like chips & salsa?" "Whaaat? Where am I? Um, YES, I'd very much like some chips & salsa, if it's not too much trouble!" Really? Dos Amigos has become my número uno Mexican place to go. Mi Carreta needs to wise up, and instead of increasing prices, offering only expensive fare, and reducing their lunch times (plus theirs is only a M-F deal, where Dos Amigos is M-Sat), and get with the program. Good food but your packed in there like sardines. There is no waiting area and the tables are to close together. Take a bottle of water because it might be a while till your waiter/waitress (that keeps passing you) fills your glass. Last time I was there I added something to my order after the food arrived. I never saw the additional food or the waitress again. The table beside me and my table had to get up and fill our own glasses. To get the check I had to flag down another waiter, then take the check to the bar because no one came back for it. I could have walked out without paying and no one would have noticed. read more

Typical Americanized Mexican food. There is a white sweet sauce they serve with the salsa that is addicting; however, after you consume a bowl, you are quite regretful. I would imagine most southern locals enjoy it. The mystery meat inside was tan in color and uniform squares, dough was thick and tasteless, green chile sauce was green but not a chile in sight. Pretty standard Mexican place. Chips and white dip to start meal. The Texas fajitas were a mix of overlooked shrimp, chicken and beef. My husband and I just moved here from Texas, home to many as you know of Tex Mex and Mexican food. This is your typical mexican restaurant, nothing really setting it apart. The food is decent, the salsa fesh and housemade along with their special ranch dip. The service is very good, I give them that, that even on an off night in food the service is spot on. This is a good solid mexican restaurant with margaritas, that I will happily frequent for such a rendevous. As far as it being my "go to" for mexican, not really. I do have a favorite already, this is a good place. Do not get me wrong, but after being in Texas, I know what I want. The street taco style is decent, and the enchiladas are good. I love the ranch sauce they bring, and the only true reason I go there...it is for the staff. Bar none, they are always, always ,always giving excellent service and are very attentive.
