Dad, my Brother Tom, and I recently had supper here and choice Mi CasitaLa Carreta for 2 reasons: 1. It was one of the few restaurants that he hadn't been. 2. It was an excuse for a short road trip to 'Nev-AH-da' Iowa, which is not to be confused with my home state of 'Nev-ADD-uh' 3. The family of the Wife of a local Subaru service tech that I know owns this place and it's sister restaurant in Boone (La Cerreta). That's not really a firm connection, and I didn't mention anything during our visit. Mi Casita is located in a reasonably vibrant (at least by Iowa small town standards) downtown Nevada, but it was a quiet night both inside and out. Service was pleasant, welcoming, and helpful. We also had a nice comfortable booth, with warm chips provided. Our Mexican food choices were all very good. I enjoyed my Enchiladas Suizas (with a Negra Modelo), while Tom had Vegetarian Enchiladas, and Dad has his usual chicken burrito. At 95+ years of age, this guy still has quite an appetite! I was grateful for avoiding the refried beans (as a matter of principle), but did wish that I would have asked for my dish to be a little spicier. The final check was very reasonable and we did enjoy being part of a birthday song at an adjacent table. Dad had some sort of super burrito, while I picked a spicey grilled chicken dish (pollo loco) with tortillas.. We both enjoyed our big portion choices and I appreciated not having refried beans, and enjoying the meat for what it was. Our spice was about right, and there was no need for hot sauce. Mexican beers rounded out our meal, with the final check being very reasonable. read more

If there was a option for a 1/4 star that would be my selection - service was awful, owners and staff hardly could speak English, drinks were from either a powder or a mix that was disgusting. We had to ask twice for a fix. The food was beyond edible, don't know what kind of meat was used , the items in the dish were unrecognizable and burnt and what looked to be chicken was dry and there was no sauce. Guacamole was from a mix or powder. The only thing that was alright, chips and salsa, but we could tell the salsa was also a mix. Obviously no one that goes here has ever tasted real Mexican Border slop Authentic- this was embarrassing. The food had 0 flavor. We ordered chori pollo; the chicken was flat and chewy, the cheese was in clumps, and there was barely any chorizo. Also ordered the burrito grande; the beef was completely plain and they put one tiny tomato on top. The rice was also like oatmeal. Our check took forever with only 2 other tables in the restaurant... then we had to total it ourselves. I wouldn't give this food to our dog, don't recommend whatsoever. read more

Chips were incredibly stale, all food had no seasoning and was barely warm. Waited almost 30 minutes for drinks and they never offered a refill until we were done eating. Food took almost an hour and was terrible, refried beans shouldn't be grey and the rice was over cooked. Don't waste your time and money here. There are much better options for Mexican a block away. I would recommend Taco Bell before I would eat this bland excuse for authentic Mexican. read more

All of their vegetarian options have the exact same vegetables and they just slap it together differently. here are your vegetarian choices... tomatoes, mushrooms, bell pepper.. and with those three you can: --- have a veggie fajita --- have a "quesadilla" (see below) --- have a burrito --- have an enchilada or they have stuff like cheese burrito (or was it a cheese enchilada? idk really), or you can order the nachos supreme without the beef. One of the cheese stuffed peppers is okay (poblano, if i remember right they put meat in their relleno? or vice versa idk). The nacho supreme minus meat: there is sooo much wet stuff that they add to them; the once crispy, slightly salty, tasty chips are ruined by piles of cheese sauce mixed with shredded iceburg and refried beans (not whole beans, unfortunately, not real cheese, unfortunately). Their chips and salsa is very good! So, the other night when I went, I got a vegetable quesadilla. I was in shock before I even took a bite. I was pretty quickly annoyed. See in the picture, they didn't even cut it. what am I supposed to do with a massive sized quesadilla that hasn't even been cut? and also of which the tortilla wasn't cooked long enough to be crispy or hold its shape; it flopped over like an old man in need of viagra. I tried cutting it with my butter knife, but it was a mess. The taste? They use a cheese sauce, not real cheese. I found it to be salty. It was edible and good enough to eat. I give this a 2.5 but I rounded down, because its my review and I can. The staff at Mi Casita are so super super friendly and kind and I really like them. I feel bad for not liking the restaurant, but I know they can do better. They do make an okay margarita. read more

Mi Casita has been part of the Nevada community for at least 15 years and they're still here for a reason - great food and great service. I ate there again tonight and tried something different again. I have yet to come across anything that I didn't like. The servers and owner are friendly and almost always have time to come to the table to chat with us while there. The employees are very polite. They have a typical mexican restaurant menu - enchiladas, flautas, fajitas, tacos, burritos, chimichangas and everything else you'd expect to see here. I highly recommend Mi Casita. The food is very good as long as you are following the SAD. However, we are transitioning to whole food, plant based and trying to eliminate fat, oil and salt. So, food options here are very limited, even if you are a vegan. Vegetable fajitas with corn tortillas would be a good option if the veggies weren't swimming in oil. Hopefully, next time, we can ask if they can be steamed instead. Also, we would need to ask if the rice is salted and oiled along with the refried beans. The staff is very attentative to needs, such as drink refills. The orders are prepared and delivered very quickly. read more

My wife and mother-in-law claim this place was the best Mexican spot in the surrounding cities 10 years ago, but it's severely went down in quality since then. I've even seen a horrible degradation over the last 3 years of living in this town. Sometime since moving here, the place got a new owner and the quality of food went down the drain. Tonight, we stopped by for the last time and we were all severely disappointed. My wife got a fajita taco salad, my mother in law got a super burrito, i got fish tacos, my son got a quesadilla with ham cubes, and my daughter got an enchilada. My daughter thought it smelled like dog food, my wife's taco salad didn't have any veggies besides lettuce, and none of our plates had any flavor whatsoever. Don't waste your time coming here anymore; go to El Mezcalito across the street. Let it run down into the ground or PLEASE go buy the restaurant from this guy and make it better than it is. read more

It is safe to say that Mi Casita is the premiere place for Mexican cuisine in the Ames area. They have an excellent menu on both selection and quality. This is complimented by a courteous, efficient staff. I have been here a number of times, and not once had a bad experience. When looking at the food specifically, it is simply delicious. They use great, fresh ingredients and prepare them expertly. Their menu is large but easy to follow and well categorized. They even have a vegetarian section for those who require it. The service is friendly and very speedy. I have never had to deal with an uncooperative employee. In fact, their owner is frequently out waiting or bussing tables and making sure customers are comfortable. Although some of them may give the impression there is a language barrier, I can assure you, they'll get it right. Lastly, if you decide give this place a go, make sure to check their specials on the board. They frequently rotate some chef specialties that are not seen on the menu. The last one I had was the Hawaiian Quesadilla - quesadilla with ham and pineapple - it was fantastic! Honestly, whether it's for a special night out or a casual taco run, Mi Casita provides the top Mexican dish for this area. read more

I give Mi Casita five stars because the food I had last night reminded me of home. This was my first visit and I shall return! The salsa is freshly made as well as the chips. Francisco, the owner, took our order and waited on us. He was the only one waiting on four tables but that didn't hinder his efficiency in the least. My husband and I shared El Grande in order to try a little bit of everything. It came with a taco, enchilada, burrito, and a poblano chile, a salad, and of course, rice and beans. We asked for a side of chorizo and Francisco suggested we try it fundido. So he brought out a plate of queso dip with chorizo in it. It was amazing with the chips. The food, for the most part is pretty Americanized in order to suit the palate of the average, somewhat rural Midwesterner, so if you are hungry for something on the spicier side, just ask. The taco shell was freshly fried and filled with ground beef and topped with lettuce and cheese. The sauce that covered the ground beef enchilada and burrito was tomato based and very bright and velvety. It brought back memories of my childhood eating at my own father's restaurant back in California. There was something on the plate I'd never had before: it was a ground beef patty topped with a bit of a poblano chile and that was covered in a dome of fried masa. It was good! The refried beans were creamy and the rice chewy. Both were seasoned well and just comforting. For dessert, we ordered a sopapilla; a fried flour tortilla dusted with cinnamon sugar, drizzled with honey and with a whipped cream floret and a cherry. I can't wait to go back! even when there is COVID around they still make my favorite and that is Enchiladas Mexicanos I love them so much there food is good, they do Ana amazing job getting it ready in time and they give us extra salsa and chips they also do a fantastic job on there queso and I would say this is my favorite restaurant I have ever been! Mi Casita is a place to come home to! They have been at this location for a long time with the same management and it shows. When we arrive, the hosts know us, seat us at our same tables, and give us plenty of attention. In my opinion, the very best dishes are the Flautas (four ways) and Tacos Carnitas. There are many menu items to choose from and the lunch menu in particular is reasonably priced. If you're in town for a sporting event and have an hour, let them take care of you. Sit a minute, have a margarita on the rocks and a hot meal. This is a good place. As a side note, as if I didn't love Mi Casita enough, one Christmastime, a stranger in the restaurant paid my family's entire ticket for us. We have six children! It's a nice town, too. read more

They have the standard Mexican favorites, but have done a really good job of offering some new items like Mexican Fettuccine, Mexican Lasagna and it is the only place in a 50 mile radius I can get Fish Tacos. Unless they cleaned the place up since I left, don't bother. Yes, they have delicious, authentic mexican food, but it doesn't excuse the roaches crawling on the walls, and the employees not doing anything about it, or even acting like they give a crap. It's very well decorated, with mexican music playing and all. The employees speak very little english, but for the most part you can communicate with them. I actually use to love this place until we started noticing roaches everywhere, and when advised about it, the employees just blew it off. When I go up that way again, I will not bring my family here, unless they cleaned the place up. read more
