I'm wrapping up a second year with this CSA and I'm definitely signing up for another one. I'm a…read morewhole-foods, plant based eater so a CSA that has a large share of organic fruits and vegetables for often time 60-70% of the price of a farmer's market is definitely worth it for me. If you don't eat as many vegetables as me, and it's just one person, I'd recommend the small share or you'll have a very full fridge before you're able to use everything. Also, nice little bonus for environmentalists and people who try to limit food waste, any food left over from the pick-up gets donated to the food shelter at the location where distribution is. They also have a composting bin that you can compost things from home or the parts of your produce you maybe don't want... *ahem* radish leaves *ahem*. Anyway, it's a good CSA!

It's from Hepworth Farms in NY, which is organic. For whatever reason, the tomatoes were almost always rotten, and other produce went bad much faster than what their counterparts at Whole Foods. In fact, I saw tomatoes on sale at Whole Foods from the same exact farm, and they looked much better. Does Hepworth give the CSA the bottom of the barrel? The shares had very little variation. I frequently found myself at the supermarket buying different vegetables. Also, half shares were not truly half shares - almost every week the full share got veggies not included in the half share. Very frustrating. I cannot stress this enough, there were so many obnoxious emails! In addition to the always-late weekly update, expect non-stop emails harassing you to volunteer. If more volunteers are needed, they should require more than the 2 or 3 days stated, instead of pathetically begging everyone all the time.

Finally had a chance to go apple picking with a group of friends at this lovely, sprawling orchard…read moreduring Fall Festival Country Music theme weekend. There was a lot going on throughout, including awesome live music, hot apple cider, farm store filled with gourmet products, multiple food vendors, pumpkin cheesecake tastings, and of course the vast orchard where all the apple trees were, which were all located uphill. There were over 10 different types of apples, such as Mutsu, Evergreen, Macoun, Snapdragon, and Honeycrisp. I mostly collected the more unique kinds. I also managed to locate the Pear trees, way behind the hay riding area. I picked Asian and Bosc pears. We went on a hay ride, which was $5 and it was rustic, bumpy, giving a sweeping view of the beautiful orchard grounds. Back in the main area, we had lunch. By this time, lines were pretty long, so we divided and conquered, as well as found a place to sit. I shared Pork Ribs and Fries, which were both very tasty. The Ribs were delightfully tender and well seasoned. Fries were perfectly crispy. One draw back was that most everything at the store and most lunch items were quite expensive. Overall, there were great vibes, and I really enjoyed the views at the farm, apple / pear picking, as well as the hay ride.

One of the best times I've had in a really long time!…read more As a born and raised Floridian, I'd never been apple picking, but a fall trip demanded it so we found ourselves here on the last weekend of the season. We started down at the bottom of the hill with "Apple Cannons" ! Pneumatic launchers that lobbed our apples into an old truck, pumpkins, hay bales, and fun targets. So awesome! Then we headed up to the main event and wow! It was a total vibe! - A live band playing exactly the perfect country music you'd expect at an apple orchard on a cool fall day. - Vendors selling soft & hard cider, juice, various hot foods, and my personal favorite, hot fresh apple cider donuts! - Costumed characters walking around passing out trick or treat candy to the kids. - An Apple orchard! Row after row after row of apple trees, most were picked pretty clean, but we found lots of juicy and delicious fruit waiting for us on the trees. You can wander around and eat whatever you want or buy a bag and take some home... We did both! Inside there's a general store and souvenir shop as well, and everyone we let or talked to was helpful and friendly, but we had all our fun out in the open.

We had a wonderfully impromptu weekend sojourn to Fable Farm this past Saturday to pick up some local cider and donuts. Little did we know that Fable is also home to a slew of chickens and goats who are packed with personality and pluck, and totally made our day with their sweet and adorable antics! We had a great time watching the animals hang out and peck around their spacious pen enclosure, safe from the masked onlookers who came to gawk at the majesty of farmland critters. Honestly, any interactions with cute barnyard characters is a high point to my day, so Fable gets five stars on that alone! We also loved the local farmer's market that sets up here, and even though it was close to closing for the day, we were able to browse around for a bit. I didn't buy anything, but the produce looked fresh and there were lots of other locally made goods like honey and soaps. We'll be back for sure next time when we have more time to look around at all the offerings! The local cider and scrumptious donuts were our initial mission, and they did not disappoint. The cider was juicy and tangy, and I couldn't stop drinking it for the rest of the evening once we got home. I was able to limit myself to one cider donut (brushed with cinnamon sugar - yum!), but that was so difficult! My boyfriend's mom was delighted with the cider donuts we brought home for her, too. I highly recommend checking out Fable Farm for a low-key autumn afternoon activity!
