My wife and I eat here at least once a week. The service is quick and friendly. The food is always good and it's consistent. If you feel risky get the large margarita it's the size of a small bird bath and really good. The fajitas are great and I pick a lot of different options from their combination options. Mi Pueblito is a super easy to find mainstay restaurant on the Winterset square, and on the way to the John Wayne Museum. The staff was very quick and efficient on this busy Saturday lunch hour. They were prompt and I was seated in minutes. The dining area is simple, straight-forward. You can see my pic of the lunch specials, there is a lot of variety - order by the number and you're done. This day, I ordered the Special Lunch #3: burrito and taco. My order arrived very quickly. As you can see in my pic, it's a simple plate: a small burrito (I assume lunch sized and priced), an incredible amount of rice and my hard shell taco. The burrito was filled only with ground beef. The ground beef didn't have any flavor, in and of itself. The tortilla was fine and the red sauce had a very mild enchilada flavor. The rice had standard flavor. The hard shell taco had the requisite items: shredded chicken (which was my selection), shredded lettuce and diced tomatoes. It was good that the shredded chicken had been dredged in a light ranchero sauce and was very moist. The salsa with chips was good, a bit of spice but not too hot. My Dad and I came for lunch on Father's Day, before visiting the John Wayne museum and house. It was the only place open besides Chinese. The menu is about the same as any authentic Mexican restaurant. The do serve corn chips and salsa. Dad ordered a combination plate of enchilada and taco with beans and rice. I had a chicken and spinach quesadilla ala carte. It dripped a bit but it was tasty. Dad ate every last bit of his so it must have been good. Restaurant was also clean and inviting. I visited this restaurant as it was located in one of the Ragbrai overnight stops. Given that I am not going to factor in service or wait times as they were extremely crowded and busy that night. My rating is for the food. I had high hopes as the people exiting the establishment while we were in line to be seated said it was good and worth the wait. These people either don't know good Mexican food or were just being polite or were delirious or starving from riding in the heat all day. The restaurant also appeared to have a family feel and was being run by Mexicans, usually a good sign, but not in this case. To start the chips were cold. I ordered a combo plate, taco and enchilada with beans and rice. The taco was passable but the enchilada was completely bland and the outer shell seemed undercooked, just limp tortilla. We visited John Wayne museum and was looking for somewhere to eat the guy at Kum N Go recommended Mi Pueblito I got #2 and mom got #6 both meals where delicious. We walked in and there was not an employee to be found. We weren't sure if it was seat yourself or wait to be seated. The service was OK, but not great. They didn't come around quite as often as I think they should. I was never asked if I wanted another pina colada, which was fine, because I didn't need another one. I ordered the Don Juan Fajitas. Shrimp and lobster, there were lots of caramelized onions and green peppers. My favorite part was the lobster and the onions all caramelized and sweet. I would have loved just to have had that for dinner. The shrimp were very lack luster. The salsa had a slight bite to it. My mom said it was mild, which i thought was weird because she can pick out the flavor in black pepper and it's too spicy for her. She enjoyed it. For the most part the food wasn't real exciting. If I could just eat the lobster and onions out of that fajita Id be in heaven. The pina coloda was good, but not very icy, more like creamy. I prefer more of an icy drink. It appears to be a fairly priced menu with a lot of choices, I didn't even know where to start narrowing down. I think my item was the priciest thing on the menu and it was only $14.00. IF you can't find something you like on the menu, you didn't try hard enough. I forgot to take a photo before I dug in. I did not eat the tortillas and I added salsa to the rice to make it a little bit healthier. I took it easy on the chips and salsa. I'm sure I went over in my calories, but it was worth it. We love having this mexican restaurant close by. When we walk in on a weekend night and see the place packed, we are happy to wait a little longer for our food because this is great small town support that any establishment needs! The employees are very friendly and always greet us with a smile, are attentive, and remember my margarita orders before I'm even seated. :-) We always are impressed with the food as well. The tacos, enchiladas, and burritos are pretty standard fare. However, their chicken and pork meals are some of our favorites. My biggest fear when going to a new Mexican restaurant is getting the dreaded canned chicken in a meal, and you will never find that here. Being from San Antonio, I was skeptical about trying the only Mexican restaurant in winterset Iowa. But I decided to give it a fair chance. The restaurant was clean and the food smelled good so I was excited to order. The service was a bit on the slow side considering it wasn't particularly crowded when we arrived. I ordered a jumbo Rita (margarita and Corona combo) and it was very good. Other than that, everything was a huge disappointment. I felt like I was dining in a retirement home cafeteria. The chips were stale and the salsa (if you can even call it that) was sooo bland! The entire meal lacked any sort of spices or seasoning (which is an essential part of Mexican cooking) One good thing is that the menu had a vegetarian section. First off, you are seated ultra quick. You then are asked for your order ultra quick and then... served your food in lightning fast fashion. What's not to be ecstatic about with this so far? Secondly, the combination dinners they have available are incredibly well priced! There are five to six pages of menu items to pick and choose over. Thirdly, being originally from near Chicago Ive seen a lot of Mexican. Ive ate a lot of Mexican. I would consider my hometown to be 1/2 Hispanic. So, in that I know what greatness tastes like. And you can find it ALL here. You won't find a friendlier staff anywhere. I love their food! I have tried virtually every combination dinner they have and they all are worthy of high praise. I am going to give a spotlight to the Chimichangas. They give you two - which, I have seen larger ones but hey, if you give me two... it's great you are making up for the lack of size on just being served one. You cannot go wrong when ordering the Chimi! The only issue I seem to constantly have is that when I am done eating - then it seems like a ghost town almost in attempting to get anyone to deliver a final bill to your table. 9 out of 10 times I have had to get up from my table to find someone who can give me a bill. If only they gave away free meals! Overall though, for a small town Mexican restaurant this is the best I have ever witnessed alive. You won't find better Mexican food in a good 120 mile radius of Winterset. Even the restaurants in the almighty West Des Moines / Des Moines metro don't measure up to the grand Mi Pueblito! Had a great mid day meal here after visiting the John Wayne museum. Very nice waiter and fast service! Mom had the nachitos which were crispy and nicely browned with a tasty and creamy melted cheese and a single cheese enchilada which she said was delicious. I had the chilaquiles, I substituted chorizo for the chicken and REALLY enjoyed them, they were so flavorful! Sadly since we are on a road trip, I couldn't take the leftovers home. It was a large plate with rice and I just couldn't finish it all no matter how hard I tried. I recommend giving this nice find a try if you're passing through this cute town! read more

All those who claimed on Google reviews that this place was good must've never been to a real Mexican restaurant. Slow service, mediocre food, and a bit messy in appearance. My fork was bent in all directions, my plate looked like it was from the 70s, and I could barely dip my chips in the small salsa bowl they gave us. It took forever to be served a small quesadilla that was pretty heavy on the salt. The waiter, who I assume was a manager, never asked us how our meal was even though I saw him ask several other tables, even being generous enough to make a few rounds to fill their drinks, something he neglected to do for us. I'll forget to stop by here again just as they forgot to stop by our table. Not worth it! read more

This little Mexican place has a lot of oddities to me. For starters, only 1 chip and salsa is free per table. It's not huge so if you have four adults you each get like 4 chips. Every other Mexican restaurant I have been too it is bottomless and free. The mangoneada looks really amazing but tastes and smells like salty feet. Not even sure how that's possible? The other margaritas are decent. Wait staff is average. Menu was sticky but, had plenty of options. Entree was mushy. I'm not sure why this place has such rave reviews. I can't believe a Mexican Restaurant could make such horrible "Mexican" food. It was absolutely tasteless! The carnitas meat was obviously not fried as advertised but stewed in salsa verde until it was flavorless. The combo platter of a tamale, burrito and enchilada were just as bad and you could barely taste a difference between the three. We would not return and suggest you save your money. read more

Pretty solid grub here. My wife and I went for lunch on a Saturday and there were only 4 other people in the restaurant. I was thrilled to see that they had Al Pastor on the menu. The chips and salsa were pretty generic, but the staff was friendly and not climbing on top of us despite not having anything else to do. My Al Pastor tacos were pretty delicious, and my wife chimi was about average. You could do a lot worse in a little town like Winterset. read more

Some people are so rude if you don't like it go back to where you came from. If you can't say anything nice about having a Mexican restaurant, and a good Mexican restaurant which is always packed with people; especially on Sundays after church then don't say anything. Let me start with a disclaimer that it was so unbelievably HOT in here that it probably skewed my opinion of the food. The 120* degree temperature made it impossible to enjoy the experience. That being said, the food was 'ok'. Nothing more nothing less. The salsa was good but the cheese dip was runny. It had no flavor either. I think they added water to make it stretch further. :( I ordered a chicken quesadilla but got beef. :( I ordered a 16 oz margarita but it came in the worlds smallest glass but still cost me $6. :( The final straw for me was a $42 bill for a family of three that received mediocre food at best. Came to this little town of Winterset to see John Wayne's birthplace and the bonus for the stop was this restaurant!! Nachitos were so addicting that the half of order I was going to take for later disappeared! The cheese enchilada was excellent and my daughter's dish was amazing.
