First, note that this indeed is a "full service" restaurant-- many similar places in grocery stores are not. They have a full menu, serve beer, etc. just like any regular restaurant. Very plain in setting (tables, chairs etc.) but the food is the real deal. I just had some tacos and a horchata (delicious and very big). All were very tasty; however I would say that the meat quality was just rather average, not 5-star worthy. Also, when I get these traditional soft tacos, I prefer when they bring out a bowl of onions and a bowl of cilantro and let me load them up as I like, rather than it being pre-mixed. Oh-- the grocery store is probably the largest Latin grocer in the Knox area, of one of them. So it's great to go for any Mexican/Latin food items too. If you pull up here looking to grab a bite and get confused because it looks like a grocery store, you're in the right spot. The actual restaurant is inside to the left, and it's a gem. I came with a friend who frequents the restaurant part of the market, and was super impressed. I did buy makings for tostadas, drinks, snacks, and deserts. There was a nice selection. The service was fast because it is a busy place. This store is rather large with a nice selection of Mexican groceries. They even have a butcher towards the middle of the back. In the back left corner is like a small kitchen (cocina) that serves full meals to their customers. We decided to try out the Parillada to get a nice variety. The huge platter of meat and sides was enough to feed 2-3 people! Everything tasted good and authentic. The place is no frills, but if ever hungry in the area... give them a try. Yes yes yes!!! This market has a hidden gem inside! The restaurant is tucked back in the left corner of the grocery. The tvs are blaring various Spanish shows and the service is fast! I was brought delicious complimentary chips and salsa. The salsa was so good I could have drank it! I ordered a shrimp quesadilla and a side of guacamole. The portions are ridiculously huge! The food was fresh and beyond delicious! The beans, the cheese and the tortillas were so amazing. The kitchen was clean and the chefs were cooking as fast as the orders came in. After perusing the menu online, I placed a phone order for several tacos and a sope de pollo. I picked my order up at the taqueria, which is located in the back of the store. Every employee that I encountered was wearing gloves, a mask, and was very conscience of space. The restaurant was allowing dine-in customers, but it looked like they had all but one or two tables roped off. They were also really accommodating and put together veggies tacos, which were not on the menu, for our daughter. The food was delicious! The corn tortillas were perfectly chewing and didn't crack at all. Each taco was jam packed with meat, cilantro, and onions. My asada taco was only okay, but the chorizo was fantastic! It it perfectly spiced and not too salty. I really enjoyed the flavor of both the red and green salsas that they provided. The red is spicy, but super flavorful and went really well with the chorizo. I also ordered a sope to try. I ordered it with chicken, but next time would definitely order it with chorizo. The sope itself was great, not too think and great flavor. It was was covered with generous toppings. I will certainly order from here again. Hopefully, after things are back to normal I can go back and spend time in the grocery portion of the store. This is one of the few real Mexican food restaurants in Knoxville TN. (Most of the rest are Tex-Mex.) Everything is flavorful and the portion sizes are plentiful. It is so delicious! I crave this place: from the tacos to the tamales and guacamole! The have an amazing salsa verde (aka green salsa) that I love. My friends go with the spicy habanero salsa. They serve soda, but also special traditional Mexican drinks like horchata. But don't all of you rush there at once or please. I don't want to have to start waiting for a table! read more

I'm bummed out about this place. Begrudgingly I give more like 3.5 stars. But I'm torn and here is why: The meat is so good. I'm talking about the very best seasoned, best prepared, best grilled meat and chicken cooked to perfection in simple street tacos. That merits some serious shining stars. The chips were also pretty darn good. The mercado is really modern and the decor is quite charming actually. It reminds of..well..of a small town pueblo. The rice was plain and the beans were a spoonful of letdown. And I wish that I had some more cebollo and cilantro in my tacos. The biggest offense was the salsa. The moment my server set the salsa on the table I spotted the heinous fraud right away. After one taste all I could think of was that old 90's salsa commercial. Oh..you know..the one where the guy says "What?! You eat salsa made in New York City?!" After one taste you know it's true. Blech. That's just plain unforgivable to me. I busted out my Spanish and asked the server where it's from. I could tell by the look on her face that my worst nightmare was in fact true. She told me they bring it in from Atlanta. Enough said. They also have a mini Mexican restaurant in the back with an enticing yet, affordable selection of authentic Mexican food! The customer service was mediocre (to be fair, there is somewhat of a language barrier if you do not speak Spanish) but, my god the tacos were delicious. I ordered a chicken taco and a shrimp taco. Both were perfectly cooked, seasoned, and presented. As soon as the first bite hit my tastebuds I felt as if I was on a trip to Mexico. I enjoyed every bite! Best part of this dinner is that the Restaurant is located inside of a Mexican based grocery store. Old taqueria feel and the food did not disappoint. She had the chicken chimichanga and I had the huevos con chorizo. Real corn tortillas, great beans and rice with crumbled fresco. We also shared two tacos because the reviews were so good about them and they were awesome as well! The homemade hot sauce is great! This is not a 5-star dining experience, but if you are looking for a more authentic Mexican dinner with great taste, not a Chuey's style Americanized meal, this place is a great dining experience. You want straight up legit Mexican food? Come here. You know it's the real deal when their is stuff on the menu you have never heard about. When you walk in, you will see the store part of restaurant, they sell all kinds of produce and even have a meat deli in the back. If you keep walking towards the refrigerated drinks, you will see where the tables are set up. All the waitresses speak Spanish but understand English as well. I do have to say the customer service from the waitresses can def be better but the food makes up for it. The tacos are the bomb, with overflowing meat on it. THIS PLACE IS BOMBBBBBB. Its so cool to go in and get the grocery experience as well as some good food. If you go though be sure to plan to have a while to be there. once your food comes out it takes a whilllleeee to get the check usually. And be respectful, if you go in try speaking some Spanish, I'm practicing mine and they always are so kind with my slip ups and help me out. With that said it is so nice to go in and have authenticity 100%. I have tried a lot there, I wouldn't recommend the asada.. its too dry and not really what most people would prefer id think.. The tacos de pastor con Pina (tacos with marinated pork in pineapple) is the absolute best in my eyes. Or the Class se Siete Mares (Soup of the 7 Seas) is so good too. I would recommend either of those for first timers and be sure to grab a michalada too. read more

Not authentic (taqueria/hole-in-the-wall type). Americanized Mexican type, if you're into that. But it's misleading though, because they do have a Mexican market there, and they do offer a few different authentic meats, and they do offer a couple more authentic things such as huaraches/sopes. My husband ordered for the family, came out and said "wow, that was expensive"! Turns out they gave him the "combo" burritos - the kind that come with rice, beans and salad on the side, even though he didn't say he wanted combos, he only just said burritos. And they never even asked him! *ALSO*: The burritos were wet - covered with red enchilada sauce, not dry/handheld!!! *AND*: my lengua burrito (yes, they had lengua - that's what I'm telling you, it was misleading) was definitely most certainly not like most/authentic lengua burritos - it had rubbery chunks inside, more of that red sauce inside, sautéed bell peppers, large sautéed tomato pieces, and sautéed long-cut onions. It was VERY saucy & fajita-like!! (Not like the diced onion/cilantro/rice/meat & such).... It's just really disappointing and irritating when you think you're getting ONE thing - especially since in the ways I mentioned this restaurant was misleading - Like you think you're getting an authentic burrito like from the taco truck down the street (which, we should've went there instead!!!) and you're not. And you don't order nor are you asked about sides/the combo-thing and you're charged more for it, and exorbitantly more, at that! *AND*, We are a family of 7 too(!!) -- SO, that means that *ALL* of our family's burritos were this way! - SO much more expensive, not needed food, packaged up in styrofoam boxes each wet with enchilada red sauce with actually not too much inside the burritos, and then the three extra sides per person, etc. So, obviously, that totally adds up!! I walked in and beelined to the hot sauce aisle and was blown AWAY by the variety...and low prices! I ended up getting Valentina's and Cholula Chipotle (which NO one carries). I was a happy girl. I also found some awesome cotija cheese and assorted Jarritos fruit sodas, which completed my taco party! I noticed a section off the the side that seemed to be operating as a restaurant. This was a much-anticipated lunch for me. I've been wanting to try it for a while. This review is for the restaurant, though I will note the offerings in the store part are ample and the meat and produce seem fresher and cleaner than El Girasol, which is set up Ina similar fashion. Seat yourself and be greeted with chips (good and crunchy and thick) and salsa ( average). The menu is in Spanish without descriptions so if you aren't familiar with a lot of traditional Mexican street foods, I encourage you to research huaraches , sopes, and various meats so that you feel comfortable making your order. I recognized many dishes from my time spent in Mexico City. The Sopes are generous at 4$ a pop; you get a thick pan griddled tortilla topped with beans, cheese, meat, lettuce, crema and queso fresco. I chose carnitas for my sope and they were tender and delicious. Tacos are &1.75 and served on delicious handmade corn tortillas with onion and cilantro. Tons of meat options - I had al pastor ( the best al pastor I've had locally) and fish. The fish is not breaded, but the way it's pan fried gives a great crispness. You get a bottle of green and a bottle of red salsas as condiments. DELICIOUS! the red is spicy and both are flavorful. They have beer, aguas frescas,Mexican cokes. Best Authentic Mexican in Knoxville* *that I have found so far *excluding the Green Acres Flea Market. Aguas Frescas. Molcajete. Sopes. Tortas. Caldos. Desayunos. Carne Asada. If you don't recognize the above items, you haven't had real Mexican food, and you need to stop in here. Had to come by when I saw a Metro Pulse article saying that they had Molcajete. Molcajete is several different meats, veggies and cheese cooked in a delicious sauce in a bowl made of volcanic rock that keeps it sizzling all through the meal. It was delicious, about $13, and way too much for two hungry people to finish. Location is inside a Mexican market, and the menu looked great, featuring several caldos, tortas, and some desayuno specialties. Friend got a Sope de Carne Asada that was loaded with Carne Asada. For about $3. Delicious Aguas Frescas. Very low prices. Generous portions. Spanish is helpful but probably not necessary. My party arrived at Mi Pueblo at approximately 12:30 p.m. The restaurant/grocery has about 15 tables, seating four at each table, so the restaurant is small. We were lucky to find an empty table; all of the other tables were taken. The server was prompt in welcoming us and taking our drink order. I ordered a Coke, which came in a 16 oz. bottle. The Coke was bottled in Mexico. The others in my party ordered water, which came in frosty mugs. After opening the menu, I found that this is not the typical Mexican restaurant. Besides the usual enchiladas, burritos, and tacos, the menu features dishes with tongue and intestines. I ordered shrimp enchilada, as did another person in my party. Another person ordered beef and pork tacos. Our shrimp enchiladas came with Mexican rice, a dollop of sour cream, a generous portion of guacamole, and lettuce, with a dab of Pico de Gallo on top. Sometimes the shrimp at other Mexican restaurants tastes rubbery, but the shrimp in my dish tasted fresh. I could only eat half of the generous portion of my meal. Chips and salsa were served as well. The server provided excellent service to our table. You will not find fancy decor, fancy plates and silverware, or fancy uniforms at Mi Pueblo. What you will find is honest Mexican cooking that tastes excellent. My entree cost $10.99. I would recommend this restaurant to anyone who is looking for a new experience in Mexican dining.
