This review is a for the bakery in back of the store - a separate business. It has all sorts of Mexican pastries, for prices that can't be beat. You can see them make the goods right behind the register. They're consistently good, and I bring my out of town guests hear to get a breakfast treat. You can often get some item just when they take it out of the oven in front of you - nice and warm. They only take cash. It's very informal. Once you park in their private lot you immediately start to smell the sweet aroma of baked bread, only to overwhelm you once you enter the grocery store. Tucked in the very back of the shop you will fins the culprit for the amazing smell. Only the best pan ducal bakery in the bay area. You will not find the quality nor the price in any other latino market. The ladies who run the cashier are attentive but be patient as it can get quite packed especially in the mornings, after 6pm and weekends between 9-10am. Even when the crowds are huge and you get that small hint of fear there might not be left for you, don't fret you little gluten loving heart. The are consistently popping fresh baked bread out of the oven. They offer the sweet breads as well as bolillo and telera bread which are great for sub sandwiches and/or tortas. They also offer special order ahead breads for Dia de Reyes (rosca-kings bread) and pan de Muerto for dia de los muertos. This market everything is so expensive, today I went to buy a half of galon of milk and was almost 5 buck when in other stores is 2 dollars. Also in a lot of items you don't see the prices in the shelves so when you are ready to pay at the register BOOOOM they tell you how much it is. So they don't put the prices in the shelves on purpose. THE BAKERY in the back is NOT the same owner, the bakery is amazing great bread hot and ready, those guys deserve 5 stars. Just gotta bump the pan dulce here. It's still really, really good and really, really cheap. I got two conchas, which were perfectly fresh with soft bread and a delicious crunchy topping, and a pineapple empanada. Those three pastries cost me only $1.75! The bakery is amazing! You can smell the amazingness from across the street. I have had conchas, muffins, empanadas, jalapeño and cheese stuffed bread, and most of the sweets and love them all. The neighborhood is not nearly as sketch as other reviewers have said. I've tried several panaderias (Mexican bakeries) in Redwood City and East Palo Alto and this one is the best! The Taqueria next door is awful. I think the meat could be leftovers from the meat counter in the market. That being said, avoid the meat counter! read more

I went to the taqueria spot of this place, they have things on the menu they don't even sell, when I asked for something they longer serve(never been here so I didn't know) the lady was super rude. The Summary: This review is only for the bakery portion only. Located in a rather sketchy part of Menlo Park, it's big selling point is that it is across the street Backayard. The bakery is fresh and every time I've walked in, there are always people making fresh new Mexican goodies. The Positives: The custard baked goods are fantastic! While I'll admit I'm a sucker for baked goods, the custard stuff here is just fantastic. The dough part is flaky and amazing goodness that when paired with the custards provides for the perfect balance of sweetness. The Negatives: The place is cash only with hard to find prices for non-Spanish speakers as few or none of the employees seem to speak English. Simple fare but the best I can remember. Open 8 to 8. A few inside booths and a few outside tables, Super Market with excellent bakery next door. Weekend and occasional weekday specials. Tacos are classics. I haven't sampled the entire menu, but the tacos and the chili rellenos should not be missed. We have business in East Palo Alto on Tuesdays and always stop on the way home for a day or two's supply of carry-out. Don't overlook the tip bucket. read more

Other reviewers all raved about the bakery and the pan dulce here and they are spot on. It is AMAZING. Amazing, amazing, amazing. It is freshly made in the store and it's dirt cheap. They have a huge variety, bigger than Mi Pueblo which is a big Mexican grocery store down the road. There is every kind of roll, at least 10 kinds of cake, muffins, conches, croissants, a wide variety of other types of pastries, cookies, scones, you name it. I have tried five or six things now and every one of them has been incredible, far surpassing pan dulce I've tried elsewhere. I was very impressed by the selection of things at the store. For a tiny little corner shop, they really have just about everything. Even stuff you would not expect to find. Eg. Nutella! And if you like to cook Latin American food, they have just about every ingredient you will ever need. They have almost a whole aisle of hot sauce and things made with peppers. They also have a carniceria (where you can buy fresh meat) and a surprisingly good selection of fresh Mexican cheeses. My only complaint is that there are almost no prices listed on most of the goods on the shelves. The fresh produce section has well-marked prices. However I did see a few prices here and there and was surprised to see that the prices are very competitive with local grocery stores - not something you find often in small corner stores. Another reviewer mentioned that the neighborhood is sketchy. That review is from 2010 and things have probably changed a lot since then. The neighborhood seems nice to me; lots of working class folks and families. It is a very diverse neighborhood, primarily people of Mexican descent and African Americans. The store looks a little sketchy from the outside but honestly what corner store is ever not sketchy looking? I spoke to five store employees while I was there and all of them spoke English. They also didn't bat an eye that I was in there (I'm a gringa). So overall I definitely recommend this store if only for the pan dulce. I went to the taqueria part of this establishment to get a burrito. I observed the prices of there regular burritos with meat inside which cost $9.75, I ordered a bean and cheese burrito because I'm a vegetarian. These shady ass people try to charge me the same amount as regular burrito with meat, I told the lady that "I'm not paying the same price for a basic bean & cheese burrito as I would for one with meat". Went over for a burrito (got super). Does not come with cheese or guacamole. Super just represents more meat and added sour cream. Added spicy sauce, which was very enjoyable and not too spicy. My husband and I visited Backayard one night for dinner and ended up parking right in front of this place. When we were walking back to the car I decided to run in real quick to see if they had some of my favorite Mexican candy. Well- they didn't, but I didn't even care because the second I stepped in the door I smelled the most amazing scent drifting from the back of the store. I walked out of here with some of the most amazing, fresh-out-the-oven Mexican bread I have ever had. I grabbed the concha (the one with the bright pink powdery stuff on it- no idea what exactly that is). It was one of the best treats EVER!! The size of my head, sweet, hot, and only $1.00. They have the BEST bread ever.... I don't know if it was that I had been in the sun all day. If I was dehydrated and hungry... IDK but we stopped by to get some adult refreshments and the moment I stepped foot in there I could smell the delicious scent of freshly made pan dulce. At first I thought that probably they had just had their bread delivered but as my body levitated and moved towards the that sweet aroma... lo and behold... they make their own pan dulce!!! Now we are talking about a tiny, tiny market and they make their own pan dulce... how great was that. I just knew I had to break my no carb diet and dive in. We bought bread for the whole gang which was 16 pieces and I was concerned that I was not going to have enough cash because the lady working the register told me that I had to pay the bread separately and in cash. I only had 5 dollars in cash and my friend had 4 more, but the total came out to $7 something so I was pleasantly surprised. I also had to use the restroom but apparently this store and the restaurant next door share restrooms so I had to go next door. The market register clerk was not as friendly as the pan dulce lady but at this point I was still excited about the pan dulce so i didn't even care about this other guy. I like all pan dulce but my most most favorite one is the one shaped like a pig or puerquito and it is kind of like gingerbread. Let me just tell you that the scent did not stear me wrong. That bread was among the best pan dulce i've ever had up to now... it was soft, moist, great flavor... it was just delicious. And it wasn't just me who thought it was good. Today I went with my family to this "Mi Tierra Linda" Mexican / Bakery/ Butchery/Carniceria/ all in one store, at Willow Road and Newbridge in Menlo Park, I have to agree, the freshly made bread is so delicious and Authentic Mexican bread that my whole family loves it, we have been getting our bread there for years, the bakery area and the dudes making the bread always seems very clean and hygienic as well as the ladies that are bagging the bread for you, that's why we keep coming back, however today we saw something that concerned us a bit, we noticed that the butcher that shares the back counter with the bakery guy was handling / cutting the meat in a VERY CLOSE proximity to the bread, there was open freshly baked bread to the left and to the right side of the Meat Weight Scale and I mean less than one inch distance at each side of the weigh scale where the raw meat is being handled, my wife noticed it as well, my wife decided to bring it to the attention in a very polite and discrete fashion, first to the bakery guy, the bakery dude was polite and receptive to the matter and seem to understand our concern and suggested that she bring the concern to the store owner as well, my wife brought this concern to the Butcher also in a nice way but the butcher appeared to get offended, he was rude and defensive in his reply, he stated that that was the place where the store owner had placed the scale for him and to go and talk to the owner, the butcher also told my wife that "IF SHE DIDN'T LIKE IT, TO GO ELSEWHERE" , my wife replied to him that it was not a matter of weather she likes it or not, that it was an issue of safety, that handling raw bloody meat in such proximity to food it was a health concern. My wife then procured the store owner, an older Middle Eastern man, she again in a polite way expressed her concern, the store owner that appear to be a nice older gentleman immediately showed off his true colors, he became very defensive and rude, he immediately asked my wife who was she to say that, he asked if she was from the Health Department, my wife responded that she was not, than he asked "if she had any education" and if so, what her education was, after my wife told him what her profession was he defended his position stating that she was wrong, he went on to say that it was not a problem that the meat and the food being next to each other because the counter was made of Stainless Steel, when I saw that this guy was very irritated and was being very rude I just told my wife that we should go and that she could always call the Health Department, when the store owner heard this he got really angry, he started cursing at us, using foul language and he told us that he would call the Immigration on us if we call the Health Department, he said to "get the f... out of his store now". He than rushed to an office at the front of the store as if he was to make a phone call to Immigration. I believe that this man made a full out of himself and that he was totally out of line by threatening to call the Immigration on us and screaming his Immigration threat in a crowded store full of Hispanic customers and employees, it's apparent that this threat of calling Immigration on people has work before for him in the past and this is how he intimidates people, in his mind he perhaps he believes that every Hispanic person that steps on his store is an Illegal Alien, he seems to forget that for many years we are the Ethnicity that has sustained his business. little this man knows that both of us are U. S Citizens and College Educated, and I honestly feel for any of my fellow paisanos that may still feel intimidated by this kind of people. He is an immigrant himself, either Arabian or Middle Easter man with a "Mexican" store where all his employees and and the majority of his customers are of Hispanic Descend.
