We hadn't intended to visit the Charles Allis Art Museum over our weekend in Milwaukee, but when we…read moregot our tickets to tour the Villa Terrace Decorative Arts Museum a short walk away, they said our ticket also got us into the Charles Allis. So we walked over to check it out. The building feels much less like an art museum than a historic house. The house was completed in 1911, and it is beautiful. We did a quick self-guided tour through each of the rooms, but we didn't stay long. There's art in each of the rooms, pieces collected by Charles Allis. I wouldn't go out of my way to go to this museum, but it's not a bad place to visit if you're in the area and have a few minutes to spare.

(To quote their website). My son and I enjoyed our visit on a MAM reciprocity day. We were greeted warmly, and given a map and information on the temporary exhibit and permanent collection when we entered. The survey of Wisconsin art "Forward..." new art by seemingly younger artists, was cool, and hung throughout the Museum. The exhibit was a nice compliment to the older art, which includes pieces by Winslow Homer. Part of the charm of visiting the Allis Art Museum is seeing period art displayed in a period space. Rooms dedicated to the Barbizon or Hudson River Schools are also amazing for their period furnishings and history. See the Billiards room in the basement for a single lane bowling alley reminiscent of "There Will Be Blood", and also a creepy shower with a "Needle" faucet- What? The newer Rahill hall looks like a big old dance hall, and would be a cool space for a small event or mixer. I'm surprised to be only the sixth reviewer for this gem of a museum.

Admission is free and there were lots of children's art work in the hallway. The actually glass exhibit was very small like inside a small room with less than 10 pieces of glasswork. Had to say that we weren't impressed especially the almost 2 hours drive. However, if you live in Racine, it may be worth to swing by.

First we went to the downtown location of RAM not knowing there were two locations. After paying for parking and to enter that museum we found out that watercolors were at this sister location. (We did tour the main museum and really enjoyed the special Easter peep contest entries - lots of fun). We eventually made it back out of downtown to this location with free admission and free parking. We enjoyed the watercolor exhibit itself - some great works but the gallery and facility was a bit underwhelming and small but for the price...

Beautiful museum…read more The beautiful building is free to access from the outside, and inside (just the lobby area, where it is the most beautiful). The museum exhibits are inside the square building with an entrance past the lobby. Any art lover will be wowed by the beautiful exhibition. There are special exhibits at different times throughout the year, and these are great times to visit. The cafe/restaurant downstairs is also beautiful, with a gorgeous view of the lake. Food and coffee is actually quite lovely as well! It's a small, and overlooked part of the experience. The store also has lots of cool stuff, though as a local Milwaukeean, I'm thinking a bit overpriced to get anything personally.

It was worth every penny, and it's especially easy to get my moneys worth because the museum is only about a 10 minute drive away from my Bay View home. My latest foray to the museum was to see the Gertrude Abercrombie installation, which I highly recommend. Then again, I can recommend anything going on at the MAM.

I adore this event!…read more Art vs Craft is now, I think, a true Milwaukee staple. Eight years running, it's a 'thing' now. Lots of folks know about it, it gets lots of press... Faythe's done a good job of organizing and getting the word out. Everyone knows that if it's turkey time, AvC is right there, following up on Saturday. What I love about AvC? 100+ independent designers, crafters, artists and the like selling their wares personally... that interaction between consumer and creator is so important, IMO. I also love that, if you take your time perusing, chances are you'll find something for everyone on your list. Your mom loves Amethysts? Those hand-crafted earrings are perfect, unique and fabulous. Dad's into home-brewing? Why not snag him some beersoap? (The hardest part about attending AvC is that it's super hard not to buy stuff for yourself!) This year, I dealt with one particularly snotty vendor, but aside from her rudeness (which is certainly no fault of the event's!) I thought it an awesome fair. Excited that we have such a great, annual extravaganza that celebrates local and DIY as opposed to the chain gang. #ShopLocal, y'all!

Having that addition was a nice bonus to our stay. Hours after we settled into our room, I went downstairs to check out the exhibits. I loved what was currently featured. Displays from up-and-coming artists rotate frequently and the captions next to their art illustrate the purpose behind their work. The best part is MOWA DTN is its free and open to the public. Check them out if you're in the area to experience a wonderful sampling of art and culture.
