Have you ever sat there and stared intently at someone's outfit, makeup or hair? No? Well, I have! So, for an entire month I jealously stared at this woman's haircut (super cute pixie with an undercut) twice a week for exactly an hour for four weeks. I'm sure she thought I was crushing on her or something like that...well, something like that, as in I was crushing on her hair. All this time I didn't ask her where she got her fabulous cut because I told myself that she probably paid somewhere in the neighborhood of $400.00, and that when I found out, I was probably going to shell out the money, and need a support group afterwards. At any rate, I asked (I politely explained my weird staring behaviour for the past four weeks...thank you very much). She told me: "You are not going to believe me when I tell you where I get it done." At this point, I'm feeling sweat beads form on my upper lip, and the back of my neck, then she drops her bomb: "I get my haircut at a barber shop in North Bay Village, it's called Fademasters." This is the part where my upper lip curls back into a feral smile and I'm thinking: Homegirl is putting me on...Biatch!" I politely, smile and say: "Come again dahling" She could have knocked me with a feather, powder my non-existent b_ _s and call me Muffin - Yep, I heard her right - a BARBERSHOP!!!! For $10.00 by a guy named JUMBO. Another three weeks go by, and I'm still thinking about all the things that could go wrong, and all the things that could go right. How am I going to explain myself to my stylist (should something go terribly wrong), who is not available until the first week of August, and what kind of wig I'm going to get should something go wrong, and how frigging hot it is in Florida to wear a wig. I'm an optimist, so I started thinking about all the things that could go right, and more importantly that my nest needed attention sooner rather than next month. Off I went to see Jumbo. There's metered parking in the back, and I hear that the Thai restaurant (Sawadi) next door is awesome, but I digress. So, I walk into the place - this princess has never ever been to a barbershop before. You won't find champagne, Barney's coffee, and the heavenly smell of hair products like you would in a salon. You won't find multiple kinds of brushes, and fancy capes, or an attendant who washes your hair, and massages your head. What you will find is six ghettolicious men - they're not stylist - they are master barbers - oh Lord what am I doing here!??? You will find that there's hip hop playing, and it is not the bubble gum hip hop kind, it is the legit thing, which I totally dug - Great sound system too, Yo! Jumbo was on time - I introduced myself, I told her the name of the girl that referred me, and I whipped out a couple of pictures of what I had in mind. Much to my surprise, he was very patient and receptive. He sat me on his chair, and said to me: "Let me play with your hair, and see what we got here." Immediately, I felt at ease once he called my hair type and what it tends to do. Then, he floored me when he started dissecting the picture I brought it, and told me exactly what would and wouldn't work with my hair. As he was cutting my hair, he was calling out step by step what he was doing in order to get the look we were aiming for. When we got to the front part of my hair, I told him I didn't want to lose length, but that I wanted movement and texture. Once again he floored me when he explained to me that he didn't need to cut length or hack into layers, but he was just going to de-bulk my front layer, so that I could get movement. I'm sure debulking is not a word, but it worked. Mind you, when he was finished, there was no 360 mirror to see all angles, there was no blow drying, nor heavenly smelling styling products. However, there was this contraption that looks like the needles used to put air in car tires, and it worked just fine. Fast forward to my going home, and blow drying my hair and putting product on it, and Voila! AWESOME FRIGGING pixie undercut. Jumbo, did a great job, extremely personable and GETS that hair to a woman is a big deal. Unassuming, clean, neighborhood place. If you are looking for a pixie with an edge, I highly recommend it. Keep in mind: bring cash, it's a cash only kind of place. Leave your princessness at the door before you walk in. Mostly, this is a first come, first served place, but I'm sure if you call Jumbo, and tell him I sent you - he'll give you an appointment (SHOW UP or if you don't, please give the courtesy of calling to cancel). Bring a picture of what you want...tip well. Thursday evenings seem to be a good time - not too busy. Last, but not least, most of their client are male, and some of them are eye candy. You get what you pay for everyone! I honestly believe some of these reviews are made up since I made my way here due to price/reviews but I completely regret it. Stick with your usual spots because bad customer service seems to be the norm here despite the possible fake reviews. If you want bad customer service on the way in and even worse on your way out then by all means make your way to Fade "Masters". First time here. I arrived running/walking 5 miles but thats not the point. I arrived within reasonable time, made my way to grab something to drink and said I would be right back while "barber" repeated that they where closing soon after I heard him the first time clearly when I walked in initially. Maybe they wanted to go home early and not make extra money? Or maybe they already have money and don't care much? Either way, they lost a good customer/tipper. It happened to be raining at the moment so I waited 5 mins and made my way to the corner store and came back. Of course, when I get back he was cutting someone else which I even think was his coworker to top it all off. Super quality haircut I got from Fade Masters. While on vacation in Miami Beach, I realized that my fade had disappeared and it was time for a fresh cut. Looked up this place on yelp, hoping that they'd be open on a Monday-as most barbers are closed on Sundays and Mondays. Glad to see that this place was open. Walked in to a cool blast of air conditioning, which I needed to evaporate the sweat from the Miami heat. Waited less than twenty minutes for the first open chair. I got the big guy, named Jumbo. We discussed the various options and common language, as in different cities a simple shadow fade has different names. He talked me into a cut called a blow out based on the conversation we had on my preferences. Great guy. Friendly. Knowledgable. Talkative in just the right way. Been here twice and both times left disappointed... i was taken care of by the same barber tho (the big guy). Extremely fast to the point of paying zero attention to detail. The other barbers do seem more detailed oriented I must say. They do take significantly longer time cutting your hair, but this guy, he's more concerned about his music and singing. My boyfriend needed a new barbershop so he decided to check this place out yesterday. Didn't look like much from the outside but the vibes were on point as soon as you walked in. They had some good hip hop bumping and the inside was clean and professional! All of the guys were nice and welcoming, made us feel comfortable. As un-PC as this may sound, this was a scene straight out of Barbershop minus Cedric the Entertainer. This is definitely where men come to shoot the shit, talk shop, and listen to explicit rap music. My roommate asked me to take him to a get a haircut, so I obliged. We dined at Sawadee Thai before, which is the Thai restaurant next door and how we found this place. These guys do exactly what the name of their business says - give fades. Mind you my roommate is a white guy from the mid-west and though these guys have done their fair share of haircuts, I don't think they were prepared for his request to look like Zac Efron. But for a $10 haircut? It was worth a shot. Unfortunately, they didn't give him the Zac Efron look he wanted, but there were 3 other guys who were also there getting their fades done and they did a great job with them.
