The roadways in the 'big money' (yes, this is what i refer to the original section as.) have been getting worse as we have been checking in. My favorite spot is on top of the hill where there's a stunning view of Downtown Dayton. Word to the wise, if you're there in your car inside the facility and it's getting close to them closing the gates. Maybe plan on leaving like 15-20mins before they close? Otherwise, you'll have this creepy white pickup truck follow g you around. I know they need you out, but they have learned not to come up and politely ask, they just sit and watch from afar. If you're in to history? Look up the tours in their website. They are incredible. Always informative and you get a ton of stories about the background of some of the folks who are buried here.

Both funerals were with "funeral honors" consisting of the playing of TAPS by a ceremonial bugle, folding of the American Flag, and the presentation of the flag to the next of kin. Dayton National Cemetery has their own Honor Squad available to augment the Department of Defense personnel performing military funeral honors, by firing a 3-round rifle volley. Which was included in both funerals. I especially like the peaceful, rhythmic layout of the cemetery. Attributed to Chaplain (and Capt.) William B. Earnshaw, the cemetery construction is the lofty Soldiers' Monument around which faceted, concentric rows of graves are arranged. Two features found here are common to many older national cemeteries. There are two ornamental 19th-century cannons located at the base of the Soldiers' Monument, and seven "Bivouac of the Dead" verse tablets. [This information is from their website.] I also found it interesting the cemetery was connected to the National Home for Disabled Volunteer Soldiers (NHDVS) [which served many uses including a hospital] by a tunnel in 1870 aka as the "tunnel of death." The arched tunnel connecting the cemetery and the hospital featured rustic stone and a metal gate. I didn't know they offered this: "Avenue of Flags program: A deceased Veteran's flag may be donated to the cemetery at any time to be flown along the "Avenue of Honor." The full complement of flags is flown on Memorial Day throughout the entire cemetery. On Veterans Day and the Fourth of July holidays, the flags will line the main entrance of the cemetery along Wisconsin Avenue. Flag donors will receive a letter and Certificate of Appreciation for their donation." This is a well-organized, well-laid out cemetery that is very honoring of our Veterans.

Even tho the crowd was large, Cemetery staff quickly moved the line of cars along so everyone was able to find parking. The ceremony itself was beautiful. Veterans, their military spouses, POW's who didn't come back from the war and members of each branch of the armed forces were recognized and honored. Following the wreath ceremony spectators where invited to help laying wreath onto the graves.

Once all the arrangements had been made, we felt at ease in knowing everything would be taken care of. They spent time getting to know us and learning about our Father so they could help us in honoring his life. The Funeral Associate, Sheri, helped us write the Obituary and she took care of getting it published in the paper and on their online Obituaries page. A beautiful Memorial video was made from our pictures of our Dad, it was thoughtfully made and was very touching. They took extra care and consideration to make sure our wishes were met and that everything went smoothly. Its an interesting combination of old and new that combines history with the future. The old - The original cemetery contained 45 grave sites although only a handful of the markers survive today. Dates on some of the remaining ones date back to the early 1800's and it was originally a family cemetery for the family that lived on the site before it became Wright State University. The new - In the 1970s, expansion of the cemetery was approved for the medical center to inter the bodies of those who had donated their bodies to the medical school. The boy's grandparents had done this and so it was nice to find the brick honoring them and remembering how nice it is that they wanted to continue to do good in death as they had in life. It was a lovely way to honor family members, and as it was Memorial Day, they had been decorated with flags and some family members were there with flowers remembering their loved ones.

Unfortunately, the staff at Heritage Hills has prolonged the grief process for my entire family. Their lack of communication, unkept promises, and excuses have continued even with a change of staff. My family has been more than patient with the staff and all we have expected is for contracts to be upheld in a timely manner. I would absolutely NOT recommend Heritage Hill to anyone that is looking for a smooth experience during a stressful time of losing a loved one. The building itself is fairly new and built for the purpose it serves, unlike many funeral homes that are in old, large houses. It's very clean and open. The entryway opens into a large central lobby that is very light & airy feeling. The large aquarium in the wall next to the office lends itself as a beautiful calming touch to mourners and a fascination and distraction for children. They have a nice large family room located just off the lobby next to the viewing rooms for family to decompress in during viewings and funerals. The room has a television, a little kitchenette, tables, and comfortable seating. I can't say enough of how wonderful this place is. I've been to quite a few funerals in the area and this is by far the best.

Webb Noonan Kidd handled the funeral for my little brother. Obviously this was a very difficult time, and working with Erin, the funeral director, things were made as easy for me as possible. There was no pressure, and I was made to feel as though my questions and uncertainties were normal and acceptable. The facility is old, but beautiful and spacious, and comfortably held well over a hundred people for our memorial service. The facility included seating, standing room, a modest kitchenette, a room with toys to entertain small children, a podium for speaking, an outdoor area, and significant parking. The services offered were compatible with modern living and dying; we were able to provide an Apple Music playlist for our own music. We were able to provide a flash drive with photos to be rotated through during the service. They were able to handle the logistics of his choice to donate his body to science, and organ donation. For clarifications, I was able to text and get answers back without having to play phone tag. They made obituary preparation easy. As I said, I can't think of anything I would change to make the experience better, and the people I dealt with were compassionate, professional, and adaptive to my needs and style. I highly, highly recommend them, and wouldn't be surprised if people were dying to have their service at Webb Noonan Kidd.
