Beautiful space, a rare gem in Portland as far as men's furnishings / clothing and custom.

Low quality, no replacement/refund, lack of communication, very surprising return policy Last July, I was visiting Portland and bought some clothes at the Michael Allen store on Morrison St. Among other things, I bought an Italian jacket, Transit, which looks I really liked. To my surprise, after inspecing the jacket upon my return to the UK, I found out that ot was not pure cotton, whereas I repetitively informed the salesperson, Jake Houston, that I only want 100% cotton clothes. I decided not to engage in returns and refunds at this point, as I did like the looks of the jacket, but indeed remembered the occasion. Unfortunately, this was only the beginning. Despite treating it carefully (I never even washed it and of course did not machine-dry it; well, I never even ran into a rain in it) the thread looks like it's dissolving with tiny broken elastic threads showing everywhere. It appear that the quality of the fabric was of unacceptable quality, dissolving after a few months of wearing. Needless to say, I can no longer wear the jacket.  Considering the price of the jacket of over 600 USD, this is very disappointing. I bought the jacket along with several other items at a total price over 1000 USD. When I contacted the store, I first received no response for about a month. Then, I heard back from Anita Noll, office manager. Later on, salesperson Jake Houston returned to me, suggesting I repair the jacket myself. (And presumably, keep repairing it every 6 months, as I see no reason for why the issue would not keep returning). In response, I mentioned that it does not feel comfortable to me to repair a piece of non-cheap cloth used with care and not extremely often for less then a year. I suggested that the situation here indicates that the fabric/thread was not of sufficient quality, originally. Therefore, I asked for a refund, in order to be able to get a replacement here in the UK. Jake Houston responded that it is too far outside of their two week return policy.  In response, I drew attention to the fact that returns related to insufficient quality are normally not the ones falling under the 2-week fitting policy. It would be really surprising for me if a premium store would not address a quality issue on an expensive item within a year from purchase.  To this, I got no response for 1,5 months by now, neither from Jake Houston, nor from the office manager Anita Noll, to the request to connect me to their quality control/management. Me informing them of my rule to post my feedback publicly did not result in any response, which makes me very puzzled about the store's reputation management.  This was all quite disappointing to me, creating with me an impression of some shady business going on, which is not that of a respectable store Michael Allen's seems to present itself. I shall stay away from this store and advise others to do the same. read more

Came in looking for a suit for an interview that I had coming in 3 days. I know pretty lady minute on my part. I had seen this shop during the time I was in college, so after trying my luck at a couple other shops I swung into Micheal Allen's. The door was propped open and once inside I was impressed on how big the store is. For everything men related it was nice seeing all the different types of outfits available but that was a quick scan. I was promptly greeted and I informed them of what I needed. I believe the initial associate who spoke to me was training because I ended up having Mike himself assisting me. He found a great suit that ended up fitting me perfectly and we accessorized by adding some ties, cuff links and a sweet pair of tan leather bottomed shoes. Of course I picked up a shirt to go with everything. This place has very soft, high end and luxurious offerings. Just know that you will have a fun personalized experience and really take your time. Went here for the first time this past weekend. One of my groomsmen wanted to treat me to an outfit for our rehearsal dinner coming up in August. Both John (Wickham) and Joanna (Henrick) helped us pick out some options to try on, with John doing the bulk of the heavy lifting (so to speak). I tried on a number of different pants/slacks, shirts and shoes. They have a great selection of really well chosen designer clothing. And these are most likely names you haven't heard of, but put out a great product. After looking at some less formal options, we decided on some beautiful light wool black pants and a stunning striped button up shirt. They should match very nicely with Ms. K.'s ensemble for the rehearsal dinner, so she's stoked about that. I think they go really well together, and really appreciate John's expert help and input. Even more importantly, I appreciate my friend's incredible generosity, inasmuch as the prices here are enough to take your breath away. Not for the penny-pincher or price-conscious shopper, this place has really cool stuff, and the prices definitely reflect that. They offered Ms. K. some wine while we were trying stuff on and my groomsman and I had some scotch--always helpful for me to get through a clothes-shopping expedition. In addition, there are two store dogs there! Max and Charlie help supervise everything that is going on here. Friendly, professional, incredibly knowledgeable staff along with some amazing clothing makes this a great place if you're looking for an outfit for that special occasion. read more

We talked about what I was looking for, he texted me photos of several things and together over the course of a few exchanges he helped put together a couple of great outfits. He wrapped them beautifully and shipped them off to me. Everything was perfect. I stopped in here with my wife on a whim as we were leaving Nordstrom, and I am glad we did. I was taken aback at first because everything was so nice and we had been slogging around Portland in casual gear all day, but their staff made us feel at home. As we sipped a wonderful glass of wine and went over all the beautiful clothing they had I was hooked. This is a store that cares about its customers in a way I have not experienced outside of London. Their associate gave me some tips that I would have never thought of and I came out of here feeling like I had just shopped on Savile Row. I love shopping at this store. Michael has extremely good taste on everything he designs. There is an amazing selection of sports coats, shirts and pants. My hubby and I appreciate their help every time we go. They go above and beyond when it comes to hemming anything. They are kind to bring your items to your car if you need help. My favorite item is this red sport coat that comes with a white ceramic pin. He gets compliments every time he wears it! We will continue being customers for many years to come. I try not not leave lukewarm reviews for independent retailers, and some other shoppers seem to have had a civil experience here particularly with their custom services, but I've visited this store several times and left empty handed with negative vibes, to the point where I've been compelled to leave a review. Their collection is interesting...some pieces are outlandish, others are contemporary and quite appealing. In other words, they curate a very decent selection, yet a "sale" sign has perpetually been almost permanently plastered over the store windows over past few months. For much of their ready to wear goods, there is no MSRP or 'regular' price listed on the labels. When my hubby and I have been here, we've only had the opportunity to interact with the female sales associate regarding prices, and she has listed prices that seem very high for the brands, even when they are on the sale rack. The last time we went, I came across a nice Oliver Spencer button down that I'd purchased at a Bloomingdales a few months ago. I decided to ask what the price was to do a comparison, and she said it was $320, which was the sale price. When I inquired about the original retail price, she said something to the effect of it being 70% off, and that I could do the math to calculate the original. Well, I purchased the exact same shirt for $90 at Bloomingdales, and the original MSRP was $200 on the tag that I still had at home. In addition to the price inflation, the salesperson we've had the pleasure of speaking with is not particularly welcoming. We've wanted to like Michael Allen's since it's so close to where we live, but with so many other men's stores and boutiques in the area with good service and less price gouging, we won't be back anymore. read more

Steven Goulet gave me wonderful service; he listened to the details of what I was looking for, offered great suggestions and got me into a pair of amazing C.P Company pants. The price reflects the great craftsmanship and design with origins in Italy, Scandinavia, UK, and North America, and what you'll find are cool, obscure high-end designers. (Sorry Calvin and Hugo, you're not invited.) Part of the Michael Allen's experience is complimentary fashion consulting from associates with years of experience, and their knowledge of classic style to current trends. The experience also includes a complimentary beverage (espresso, top shelf hard liquor and water). What is also great about Michael Allen's is that the price tag on my pants included the alteration! If you wear cuffed dress shirts their cuff-link selection is the best in Portland and the "go to" gift item and their tie collection wakes the perfect addition to any suit. I happened into MA on a downtown shopping adventure with friends and was immediately unimpressed. The clothing was gaudy, the labels unimpressive, and the staff was incredibly condescending. The only decent items to be found were the LBM 1911 sportcoats and middling selection of denims. Prices were outrageously inflated (Grensons for close to $500? Bah!) as well. My favorite clothier in town, and I've found the tailoring to be good (hems, minor alterations, etc.) ... I've also appreciated when they've made recommendations for fit, as opposed to simply fulfilling requests as stated. Glad to find my favorite shirt makers carried there (Eton & Van Laack), and the service is friendly, without being sycophantic (as is the case with a few other local spots). Since I travel a lot - I tend to do most of my shopping in New York and other cities more fashion-forward for men than Portland. However, this is a rare find among men's stores, and would be a great shopping experience anywhere in the world. However, it is not for everyone, and it took me a while to figure out the vibe of the place.. First of all, it is quite expensive, and at first glance it is sometimes difficult to picture yourself in some of the clothing. The best way to experience this store is to carve out a couple hours, come in and walk the store, relax, have a cocktail or a glass of wine which they happily provide to serious customers, and allow yourself to be guided a bit by the staff. Spend a lot of time trying on stuff - even clothing you would normally not look at - and you will probably find some gems. The quality of the garments are quite high, and you will find unusual brands with sumptuous fabrics. They do a great custom business too, and they are expert tailors. The store is small and beautiful; never busy, and quite wonderful. Expect a bit of shock when you get your credit card bill, but hopefully the wonderful clothes will be worth it. read more

A good men's resource for brands you won't find anywhere else and a nice change of pace from Nordstrom vanilla. However, DO NOT allow them to tailor or alter anything - whoever does their work is a major hack. Everything that's come back from alterations had to be redone. read more
