It has taken me a long time to write this review. I don't like speaking ill of people when I know…read morethey are not malicious. However, this is important information: After a 45 minute conversation, Dr. Shain diagnosed my 9 year old as being Bipolar, and immediately prescribed them a mood disorder drug. The drugs caused my child to begin having severe, medication-induced psychotic breaks. After several terrifying months of this, my child's symptoms dramatically worsened. I asked Dr. Shain if we could wean them off and try something else. He was very reluctant, dismissed my concerns, and suggested we just pile on more meds. When I pushed back, he told me that, if I really wanted to go back to zero with the meds, I should just cut them out immediately, without titrating them down. We ended up in the hospital, after a severe, terrifying meltdown. No one there could understand why our psychiatrist would advise us to abruptly cut our child off mood disorder drugs I proceeded to have my child evaluated at Stanford, and found a new psychiatrist. My child is not bipolar. They are autistic, with depression and severe anxiety. They are extremely sensitive to medications - which is apparently common with autism. A year later, and my child has stabilized beautifully. They still struggle with depression and anxiety, yes, but I no longer have to hold them down to keep them from trying to claw their own eyes out. We haven't had any psychotic episodes since we stopped giving them the wrong meds, and had them properly diagnosed I feel bad about posting this. I do not think Dr. Shain is a bad person - I feel certain that he cares about his patients very much. However, he made catastrophically bad judgement calls where my child was concerned. I don't like to think about what my child's life would be like if we had followed Dr. Shain's recommendations.

He gave me 3 hours notice on a Friday and I told him that unfortunately we couldn't make that time and would like to schedule an appointment the following week. He sounded frustrated and said he going to be out on vacation. No problem, me thinks. So I tell him we can be in touch when he returns. Thankfully, in that time, we found a very professional psychiatrist (Dr. Zuberi in Lafayette) that we were very happy with. Yeah! 2.5 weeks later, I get a call at 9:30 on a Monday night from Dr. Shain. After asking rudely if we were going to schedule an appointment with him "or not," I told him that while he was out, a therapist was found and we are going to go with him. He curtly replied, "you know, you are a piece of work," and HUNG UP. Amazing. No idea where that came from - he acts as if I stood him up for an appointment or had gone round and round trying to schedule something, but this as our second conversation. Once I was able to fully grok what just happened (have never been spoken to by a "professional" in this manner), I immediately tried to call him back, only to get voicemail. This is so unfortunate and inappropriate on so many levels. For a THERAPIST to actually be mad at us for finding a doctor we were happy with is, at best, disgusting. I can only imagine if we would have selected him - we would need a psychiatrist for our psychiatrist! Update: I should say that he came to me as a referral by a trusted friend, and he did help her family. So while I'm glad to hear that he has helped someone, I question anyone's judgement - especially a therapist - who thinks they can speak to others in the way he spoke with me.

I have been calling this office for months, it has been more than a year since my study was conducted. 1 year and 7 months to be exact. I needed these results to clear me for a surgical procedure that I need and it took them 1 year and 7 months to give me the results!?!!?? How is that possible!?!? This is beyond unprofessional. Everytime I called the Sutter Health number and got in touch with someone, they told me that they didn't see my test result information on their system. This was beyond frustrating as I needed this test for a procedure that I have to do. So because of this, the date of my procedure was put off.... 1 year and 7 months later!!!!! This morning I called (ONCE AGAIN!!!) and spoke to a lady who told me that she would search for my name. About 10-15 minutes later she calls me back and said that she found me in the system and that she would be in touch with my surgeons office to fax over the results. She also emailed the results to me. This all happened in a span of 30 minutes or less. I believe the lady's name is Luyen. So thank you Luyen, for doing something in 30 minutes that the rest of your colleagues could not do in the last 1 year and 7 months. Which was sending my results to my surgeons office for clearance. Seeing that it took her just under 30 minutes to figure this out and I had been calling for SOOO SOOO LONG, I just HAD to leave this result. On another note: it is almost impossible to get an appointment in a specific timeframe. His office is busy and overbooked (as you can see from some of the other reviews.) I had to wait more than 3 months for my appointment with him and then another year and 7 months for the results.

Elliott is pedantically and unsupportively moralstic: when I sought help with abuse suffered in my family of origin, Elliot's retort was to let go of my pain, as I certainly had caused pain to others. Any perspective or nuance was inutile; while this is true, as a long-term lesson, as an opening to therapy, it was insensitive, dismissive, blaming, and lazy. Thanks to years of other help, I have seen my place more clearly; but, Elliott didn't help.

He has zero allegiance to the corrupt pharmaceutical industry and is 100% focused on improving the emotional, physical, and spiritual well-being of his clientele. Let me begin by saying that I possess a deep distrust in general for psychologists and psychiatrists in today's America. In the past, I have struggled with practitioners who are strictly interested in helping me to function in an occupational sense (i.e., showing up to work with drone-like consistency) without any concern for treating the root causes of my stress and anxiety or improving my well-being. I've been prescribed with harmful pharmaceuticals such as Xanax, Trazodone and Ambien which have only served to exacerbate my sleep and anxiety problems. In my estimation, a disturbingly high percentage of therapists are minions of the corrupt pharmaceutical industry. Elliott is *not* your typical therapist and he is no one's minion. He stands in a class of his own in comparison to the 6-8 other psychologists who have treated me in the past. He is a high priest and a scion of the 60s era culture which has made San Francisco the amazing and unique city that it is today. He weaves a unique blend of Buddhism, Hinduism, classical, and new age psychotherapy to help his patients achieve greater awareness of the world and their subconscious drives. Most importantly, he encourages one to accept the whole of oneself, for better or for worse, and to disengage from harmful emotions (e.g., guilt, anger, and fear) as well as counterproductive behaviors (e.g., self-denial, self-tyranny, and self-deception). To visit Elliott is a unique and eye-opening experience. He lives in a beautiful area of the Mission District. He is extremely friendly and always begins and ends our sessions with a genuine hug (he respectfully asked my permission before the first hug). Upon entering his cavernous apartment, you will find yourself in a world of 60s era hyper-colors. He has a treasure of literature stacked throughout his apartment and is always enthusiastic about handing out sections of materials which he believes are most appropriate for one's treatment program. His couch is comfortable and it's easy to relax and open up about one's latest experiences and challenges. The work itself is challenging yet profoundly rewarding. He doesn't offer quick and easy fixes but instead seeks to educate his patients about what particular blockages may be causing issues. At times, his homework assignments can be voluminous but they really do help if you can find the time to read them (I've only read about 50% so don't get too caught up in reading everything - he's incredibly flexible). The changes which he suggests may be radical in nature and may require a great deal of thought and careful negotiation with one's closest personal and professional partners. In my own experience, I had been experiencing very significant insomnia and anxiety before I first met with Elliott. I had been holding onto some deep fears and concerns which I needed to share with someone in a safe and healthy environment. I had been mourning the suicide of a close family member which regularly haunted me and negatively impacted both my personal and professional relationships. Within only a few sessions, Elliott helped me to complete the process of mourning my deceased family member. He also helped to alleviate some of the deep concerns which I didn't feel comfortable sharing with my friends and family. He helped me to acknowledge and accept my "shadow side." He provided me with a wide array of aphorisms which help to guide me on a daily basis. He helped me to release much of the guilt which I had been carrying for my entire life after being raised in a Christian fundamentalist family. Our most recent sessions have been focused not so much on healing but on expanding my life. My marriage has never been better and never been so passionate. I'm assuming new responsibilities at work and carefully considering and planning to make some dramatic improvements to my career. I've become almost completely unhinged from my limiting beliefs and constraints and the future appears limitless and bright. Elliott provided me with the gift of the "red pill" from "The Matrix" - my life will never be the same and I'm eternally grateful for this opportunity. He gave me medication after medication at doses that were sometimes 4 times the highest recommended dose. He frequently used medications in "off-label" use. For 8 years he had me continually on medications that were unnecessary and dangerous to my health. I still have side effects that will never go away due to his negligence. I wish I had never been under his care.
