I don't usually write negative reviews. As a business owner, I understand that people can have…read morenegative experiences sometimes and our businesses' reputations are vital to our livelihood. However, I have given this practice several days now to follow up and attempt to respond to my concerns and they have not. I went in for an initial appt and was not clearly informed that I would not have a cleaning. They told me it would be $320 out of pocket for the first appt including full xrays (they never asked if I had xrays done in the last year or if I wanted them done - looking back I would have gotten some sent from my last dentist). They gave me a tour of their many exam rooms and only one dentist - which made me question the quality of their care. The hygienist was struggling with equipment that was not working properly and after explaining that I have a phobia of vomitting and don't like feeling like I may gag, it took a solid 45 minutes of xrays to get it done. She was doing the best she could but it was a really awful circumstance and she was struggling to keep her cool. There was no problem solving or attempt to move me to a different room. The dentist was informed of the issue and seemed only minimally interested in noticing it or fixing it. Next the dentist came in and roughly pushed his fingers into my mouth attempting to put his finger down my throat despite my saying I did not like or want him to do that. He didn't explain why he needed to do so (I have never had a dentist do this before) and stated he would do it when I wasn't paying attention. He then proceeded to quiz me about anxiety and seemed to be making some judgments about what was wrong with me and handed me some information about a tedx talk but didn't share what it was about or how he felt it related to me. Later I went home and watched it and it referred to people with tongue issues, breastfeeding, posture, swallowing and snoring, which I do not relate to AT ALL. I am not sure what he felt my problem was - I asked but he seemed to have his own agenda hidden in his mind which he did not communicate to me. I also didn't ask for support with anxiety (I am a psychotherapist and am clear and comfortable with the symptoms I experience). It was clear he needed to feel intelligent but failed to get to know me before diagnosing me with issues that were out of his scope of practice. It was super judgey and condescending. The lack of clarity was confusing as well. Then they ushered me to the front and said I would come back for a cleaning. When I explained to them that I didn't have clarity that I wouldn't get a cleaning, I got some defensiveness and some apologies. I explained that I felt swindled into their "membership plan" bc I had just paid $320 and didn't even get my teeth cleaned, just a horrid experience. Financially, it would have made sense to sign up for that deal, now that I had already sunk $320 into my care there, but I didn't want to return and felt I had just wasted a bunch of time and money. I feel like you should be able to consult with a dentist first before feeling like you are committed. This dentist and system made me feel I had no choice - no voice or say. I asked to speak to the dentist or someone and by the time they finished loudly sharing my concerns in the back office and finally returned to touch base with me 10 minutes later, I was crying. I explained that I didn't have the emotional bandwidth to discuss it in the office right then and there. The dentist said he wanted to resolve it and I said I just needed to leave at that point. They didn't offer to reduce or waive my fee, just let me go ahead and pay in full and leave crying. I would have expected that if they really cared to resolve the issues, they could understand that I was too overwhelmed to talk in that moment and that they should follow up by phone or email later that day or the next day. I feel like this dentist is focused more on making money and feeling valid as an expert than he is in his integrity and care of patients as a dentist. Oh - and they use business sales tactics to gain 5 star reviews.

Dr Mertz' office in Longmont is very modern and the staff professional. He listens well and has empathy for his dental patients like myself who may have extreme anxiety before & during treatment . There is never a rushed feeling during treatment -he lets the novocaine do its job before drilling . He uses nitrous oxide to help me relax . He explains what he is doing & he & his assistant praise me too during the procedure which gives me confidence . During long procedures he makes sure that I get a bathroom break . I don't dread getting dental work like I used to !

I went in for an exam, for an implant and after which, was given a referral to an oral surgeon. I questioned why that they made the initial appointment, a week out and charged for an emergent exam, as well as didn't suggest to go to an oral surgeon. 500.00 for the appointment, that did little for the problem, outside of profiting the dental practice. I have called my insurance carrier to make a formal complaint, also I called Molly Perra at the Colorado Dental Association, and will file a written complaint. I would have written BBB, however Mertz is not a member, understandable so. There should be no excuse for fraudulent, unethical practices, especially when dentistry is a needed service.

They extracted the tooth with extreme difficulty--I have exceptionally strong bone and the thing would not come out. The dentist worked on the extraction for 2 to 3 hours, and even though the initial cost was to be 1850 with a free bone graft of 820 thrown in, they ended up charging me $1234. While the extraction was somewhat painful since lidocaine isn't terribly effective on me, I feel so much better today even with a tender jaw. I'm going to have them fix the rest of my mouth because they worked so hard to do good work and keep my costs down, which is everything to a disabled man of 75.

The dentist said I had terrible periodontal disease and bone loss and need a root canal and a deep cleaning. I said "no thanks". A few days later I got into my regular dentist (out of state...I'll switch to a CO dentist when I find a none scummy one) and he took xrays, examined me for more than 10 seconds, and said "no root canal needed, just some gingivitis. Gave me some special mouth wash and $6 antibotics and a week later I'm 100%. Shame on Longmont Modern Dentistry for scare tactics/misdiagnosing. Read other reviews on Yelp for similar cases.

1 Star -- Very Disappointing Experience…read more I was a longtime patient of West Lake Dental, but unfortunately my most recent experience has caused me to decide to take my dental care elsewhere. I arrived for a scheduled cleaning and was told when I got there that I also needed X-rays and an examination by the dentist. I had not been informed in advance that these would be required, so I declined them. I believe patients should be given reasonable advance notice about additional procedures or services. After I declined, I felt that the atmosphere changed considerably. During my cleaning, Michelle became visibly upset and told me a personal story that ended with the statement, "People are assholes." The remainder of my cleaning felt hurried, rough, and uncomfortable to me. I subsequently called the office and asked to speak with Dr. Andy Maples about what had happened. I was told that he would probably call me toward the end of the day. I never received that call. There was also a separate issue involving updated medical records. I was working with Annie to arrange to complete the forms at home because I did not have all of the necessary information with me. During that conversation, the office manager repeatedly interrupted and, in my experience, spoke to me in a disrespectful and scolding manner. I ultimately left rather than argue. I later received a letter from the office manager stating that the office does not allow "abusive" or "inappropriate" language and telling me to find another dentist because I refused to follow the office's procedures. I strongly disagree with that characterization of my conduct. I did not use abusive or inappropriate language toward her. I have been a patient for many years, which makes this experience especially disappointing. I believe patients deserve clear communication, courtesy, and respect when they have questions or decline something they were not previously informed about. I have decided to find another dentist. I am posting this review simply to accurately describe my experience and to let other patients make their own informed decisions.
