He may be an amazing doctor, but I'll never know . . . because his staff gave me a weird runaround. My insurance company said he was taking new patients. I phoned his office. They confirmed that he was taking new patients. They said they'd email me the paperwork. I spelled my email address v-e-r-y c-a-r-e-f-u-l-l-y. No paperwork. Next day, I phoned his office again. I said I hadn't gotten an email, maybe because they hadn't spelled my email address correctly. I spelled it again v-e-r-y c-a-r-e-f-u-l-l-y. No paperwork. So I went to the office. I asked to fill out the paperwork then and there, and they gave it to me. When I turned it in, they said someone would review it and call me to make an appointment. Did they? You guessed it. No call. So why would a doctor claim to be taking new patients when he really isn't? Is it some quirky insurance thing? I just don't get it. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ P.S. The day after I left this review, his office called me to schedule an appointment. Needless to say, I declined. So I guess he is taking new patients (at least when prompted by a Yelp review). I've been a patient of Dr. Killian for about six years now and I feel very fortunate to have him as my primary care physician. He's highly competent, friendly, and an excellent communicator. As others here have noted, one never feels that he's in a rush to wrap up his time with you and move on. He takes time to engage in a conversation with you, to listen to your concerns and questions, and to address them thoroughly. For me, good communication is the most important quality I look for in a primary care doctor, aside from a basic confidence in his/her competence. Dr. Killian has helped me better understand my various medical issues and articulates his treatment goals and methodologies in an exceptionally thorough and understandable manner. I have a fantastic cardiologist who is also an excellent communicator, but I have often found myself with Dr. Killian explaining and helping me understand my heart issues more completely than I would listening to my cardiologist alone. He is thorough in integrating test results and other information from the cardiologist (and other specialists) into my patient records to maintain a complete understanding of all my ongoing medical issues. I could scarcely ask for more than that. His group practice, Red River Family Practice, is well-run, and I have encountered very few of the office/administrative frustrations I have at similar group practice offices. Reading some other less-than-positive reviews here, I'm reminded that no single physician is likely to be the right fit for every patient, each with their unique concerns and expectations. That said, Dr. Killian is a perfect fit for my priorities and expectations, and his competence and professionalism provide a rock-solid foundation to support those preferences. If I could give Dr. Killian 3 1/2 stars I probably would. I moved to Austin in 2010 and was smack dab in the middle of working with doctors in my previous city with diagnosing my sudden onset of hypertension @ age 29. Dr. Killian reviewed the tests from my previous doctors and just said "well it's probably just genetic just keep taking the medication." As much as this might be ok with most people, I'm a healthy young runner who wouldn't accept this answer. He was not willing to order more tests and just kept scheduling me for apt. ever 12 weeks for check ups. He is friendly and thorough, not exactly warm, but just not wiling to think outside the box and listen to what his patients want. He would be a great doctor for someone who just wants someone to tell them what to do and they do it. His nurse is warm friendly and efficient. I rarely had to wait more than 5 or 10 minutes for my apt. I HATED driving there and parking in a paid garage for every apt. I also got lost EVERY time I tried to find their office buried deep in the hospital lol. Their administrative staff is courteous and quick. Never had an issue with billing or scheduling, which is nice. I was frustrated at my last "annual physical" where I got charged full price for the visit and not a "free" annual exam because "I mentioned my prescriptions therefore making it not a annual exam" WHAT? seriously? This isn't their fault, when I called to complain they said "That's obamacare for you" I have decided to leave their practice to find a doctor that is more willing to work with me on my chronic illness, and for a practice that is not as inconvenient to drive to. read more

I have been seeing Dr. Killian for almost 3 years and I have always been very pleased with him. I tend to go to the doctor for things that are vague but seriously bothering me, and he has never made me feel stupid or like a hypochondriac, and has frequently figured out what was wrong. He is very professional and takes everything I say as the truth. He seems very knowledgeable and asks many questions in order to understand the situation. He is not someone who will just give you antibiotics for anything and dismiss you, which I find to be a plus. It is hard to find a doctor that takes women's health concerns seriously but I find he does. He has tried many treatments for me until something works. He is a bit brusque, but do not mistake this for him being uncaring. I highly recommend him. read more

I was a little sketchy after reading the revies of Doc Killian being "brusque, " but I was pleasantly surprised across the board by my visit. First off, I was seen immediately for the time I was scheduled. This is a flippin' miracle, after my last medical appointment where I spent 30 minutes shivering in a paper gown waiting to be seen, after waiting 15 minutes past my appointment time in the waiting room. Second of all, Dr Killian was kind, friendly, and conversational throughout our little wellness date. I was getting my once a decade routine physical exam, and he was seriously thorough. He listened to each of my few physical complaints and followed up on them systematically. He seemed genuine and caring, making recommendations and answering my questions. Perhaps the most impressive item on the list of things I appreciate about this doctor is the fact that he at no point seemed rushed, as if he was trying to move it along so that he could see his next patient. I am a Patient of Dr .Werntz whom I just secretly love to death as he does a great job of working with me ,I have never had as much pain relief as I have now with Werntz, Yet when it is a surgery issue, Doctor Killian is your man he is the best! I did not feel any thing, while he did his thing he numb me up really good and really worked on me for an hour should I ever need any scalpel type thing Killian is the man He is great , during the procedure his bedside manner was wonderful, i felt at ease in his hands he was very knowledgeable in what he does , and he tells you exactly what he is doing . I love this office because Wentz is not the type of doctor that does that kind of thing he did a great job of referring me to his partner same office , so Werntz and Killian are top doctors in Austin in my book or should I say the Doctors only in my book as for Family Practice , now neurology is totally different! read more

I went in for a wellness exam with Dr. Michael Killian at Red River Family Practice. The check-in process was handled by a rude lady and they charged me a new patient fee of over $100. I wait for a while and was then escorted to talk to Michael Killian in a room. I was surprised to see that his knowledge of nutrition, fitness, and intermittent fasting, was outdated or limited. When I told him about the key role dietary fats play in maintaining our hormonal functions, he denied it. When I told him about putting on muscle mass by increasing weights (intensity) in the gym, he said that I don't really need to lift heavy, just do more reps. Huh? So I can just do more reps with a 5 lbs. dumbbell and increase my muscle mass? This contradicts all science on fitness and nutrition. I felt like I paid over $100 (for a wellness exam that was supposed to be free) to talk to a doctor who hasn't kept up with his field. read more

Dr. Killian is the best GP I have ever seen. Our family has been seeing him at Red River Family Practice for many years. He's caring, thorough, and never rushed. We have no major health issues, but Dr. Killian treats our family for maladies ranging from sore throats to rashy skin and everything in between. Additionally, the staff is fantastic. The folks at the front desk have been there forever, and are friendly and always helpful. The medical assistants are all terrific. I especially love Dr. Killian's assistant, Tracey, but they're all good. Last but not least, the other doctors in the practice are excellent, and can help any patient of the practice when their doctor is on vacation. In particular, I've seen Dr. Bartz on several occasions and have been impressed with her care and her bedside manner. She's also a great doctor! What's amazing to me is that I NEVER have a long wait when I see a doctor at RRFP. And yet the doctors have plenty of time with their patients. They must be working very carefully to keep their schedule sane. That's so impressive, considering that they're a successful, busy practice! Updated 01/22/2018 I finally made the appointment with my specialist after calling Red River Family 3 times before that. The lady who handled referrals either wrote down the wrong fax number or pressed the wrong key. She claimed she faxed to my specialist over the weekend but nothing went through. I called the specialist doctor's office twice just to confirm the fax number. I was surprised they made mistakes over very basic task!!! Originally written 01/19/2018 I have been seeing Dr. Killian since I got to Austin. Usually it's not hard to schedule for a appointment within the same week. The office is easy to get to and is roomy for awaiting patients. The doctor himself is caring, very knowledgeable and friendly. He offers different options of solution to my health conditions and explains each proper medical procedure. He tells me pros and cons of each option. But the office clerks are not that nice, especially the ladies. I sometimes had a hard time get a hold of the medical assistant. And they process paperwork REALLY slow! Today I spent a whole day(called the office at 9:30 am) just trying to get a referral from the medical assistant to my specialist so that I can schedule an appointment with the specialist asap. But so far at 4pm, I still cannot schedule the appointment because the specialist office hasn't received the fax yet!!! That's how productive and efficient they are! I use the online portal too but I found out it's easier to call them for status of paperwork/requests. read more

Sounds silly, I know, but I frequently think when leaving Dr. Killian's practice, that he should give lessons to the medical community on how to run an office and treat patients. Yes, his staff including Victor and Tracy are thorough and well trained, but it is HIS knowledge and demeanor that sets the tone. As Senior Citizens, my husband and I have questions and new issues to understand each visit. We never feel foolish or rushed. Moving from Dallas, where most of our doctors became personal friends, we were very worried on what we would find in our new City. Now, after over ten years of aches and serious issues we feel BLESSED to have Dr. Killian in our corner. Dr. Killian has been my doctor for 2 years. He's great. I've only had to go to him a few times, but to second another commenter, each time he saw me right on time...no wait. The first time I came to his office for a general check-up and introduction, we spoke for almost 45 minutes. Besides the check-up, he asked about my family and what I did, etc., and we talked about his family, etc. It felt like I was actually able to get to know my doctor and vice versa. I haven't had that type of experience with a doctor in years. I also disagree with the statement about him being brusque. He's certainly direct and he doesn't sugar coat things, but he's thorough and understanding of your concerns. Oh, and his staff is great too. I absolutely recommend Dr. Killian. read more

Dr. Killian is awesome. I've been going to him for the past few years. I don't get sick or injured very often, but when I do, he's been helpful in prescribing the correct fixes. I'll echo the other reviews in saying that he isn't chatty or overly warm, but he is personable and does his job efficiently and well. Today, I came in with a very bruised toe (subungual hematoma) and no health insurance. I was very worried that I would pay out of the nose for the visit, but Dr. Killian assured me that it was an easy procedure and I left paying well under $100. My usual doc is Dr. Mary Bartz, also at this practice. I didn't think Dr. Killian was uncaring at all. I have had a lousy chest cold for a few days now and I think he gave me great care. He said I should be careful I don't get worse because I could get pneumonia. He said to listen to the warning signs and take it easy. Very nice guy. read more

I have always appreciated that Dr. Killian has told it to me straight, provides me with ways to learn more about my questions, and takes as long as I need to discuss my concerns. I recently had my first visit with Dr. Killian and I must say, it was a great session. He is very knowledgeable of multiple aspects of healthcare and he listens to what you have to say. He does get straight to the point which is quite refreshing because you don't waste time on your visit. One other patient reported on Yelp the issue I had with Dr. Killian and his facility. I went in for a physical which was supposed to be fully covered by my insurance. At the end of the physical, the doctor asked me if I had any questions. I asked him about general nutrition and he gave me a very generic answer. When I got the bill, I noticed that the doctor charged me for a regular office visit. When I called up their office, after a few run arounds, they told me that my question about nutrition prompted them to charge me for an office visit. I do not understand how they can charge me a fee without disclosing it during the visit. This in my opinion is outright cheating! But, it looks like a lot of physicians are resorting to this practice. It is unbelievable that the doctors have to resort to shady practices when they are expected to save lives. I have a couple very severe health problems, and recently found myself in need of a family doctor. I knew that I wanted someone within the St. David's network (I've just received superior care from them, not everybody will agree), and after reading Dr. Killian's reviews on here I decided to schedule an appointment. From the moment he walked in the room he made me feel comfortable and at ease. I often get frustrated because no doctor as ever been able to tell me what the root cause of my problems are, yet everyone of them always wants me to tell them what it is. I could tell he sensed my frustration, and didn't try to push the topic. He listened carefully to my concerns, and spoke to me plainly about what my treatment options are. I was especially impressed when he gave me his honest opinion about "supplements". So many doctors will tell you that supplements are dangerous and ineffective. While the former is true for some particular chemicals, and for some rather nefarious manufacturers, I have first-had experience at how helpful they can be. Dr. Killian didn't advise me to discontinue taking them, and even gave me some useful knowledge about how they may potentially interact with my FDA regulated drugs. I will be going to Dr. Killian until he retires, and I will be recommending him to any of my friends who are looking for a family doctor! read more
