Oh wow!!! Micheal knows how to make pizza and make it incredibly delicious!! They do not skimp out on good quality ingredients - Caesar salad was fresh, Parmesan-y and croutons seemed homemade. And the main- our pizza was loaded with fresh veggies and cheese. Oh...and crust...wow!!! My hubby and I do not particularly like deep dish pizza but the dough was perfectly chewy, and crunchy by the crusts and not oily at all- how do they do this? So amazing! We both fought for the crusts bc we loved the smothered pizza sauce by the crust. All to say, we loved every bite of our pizza. We now have become a fan of deep dish pizza- but only at Michael's, lol! And let me tell you about the service, so friendly, kind, and attentive! The person who tended to us, we should've gotten his name- an older gentleman- maybe he was the owner? I don't know but he mentioned that this restaurant has been around for over 40 years and when we were commenting on how good the pizza sauce was, he said they spend many, many years perfecting it- so we assume he may be "Michael" but don't know. Anyhoo, when we couldn't decide between two pizzas, he offered to do half and half so we did. We got half SFO and half Greek. They were both yummy, but we preferred SFO -just personal preference. He also asked us where we were from and when we said we were out of towners and asked a few questions about Calgary, he answered them kindly and gave us good recommendations. He chatted with us for a bit after we finished our food and was just so nice! Michael's Pizza definitely had the local restaurant feel that made tourists like us feel at home and like the city as visitors. Let me just say wow! I am a pizza lover and I usually don't like thick, Chicago style pizza - but Michael's changed my view. This was one of the best pizza I've had in a long time! From the generous ingredients to the crust, perfectly baked and the sauce is to die for, I devoured it all. I couldn't choose between the two and when I asked what I should get, the owner suggested me to split. And both were amazing! The only bad part is that we don't live in Canada so I won't be able to come regularly! And to top it off, the owner was super friendly and nice. In a sea of franchised cookie cutter pizza takeouts, I love finding a place like Michael's. It's atmosphere is homey, the pizza crust is absolutely beautiful and they are open late enough to grab takeout for a super tardy dinner. We had the house special: Pepperoni, mushroom, beef, ham, green peppers, onions and shrimp. Shrimp? Yes shrimp! Don't go there until September 6. From out of the country, found it on here, good ratings, "open" , a few blocks from our hotel. We walked there. The sidewalk is under reconstruction, the place did not look open nor any way to get into it. I called the number and a recording says they are closed until September 6. Close to 5 stars. The pizza was very good. Pizza sauce had a lot of flavor. Salad was fresh and good. Owner was very friendly. My wife had spaghetti that was very good. Meat sauce was much meatier than other restaurants. My wife liked the fact that the meat sauce and spaghetti was already mixed-up while many places just put the sauce on top. I was really hungry while yelping today and after my stint last night at VIN; I woke up at noon with no inspiration to cook so I decided to call Michael's. When researching Yelp pages (thank you Yelp) this seemed to be the most loved pizza place. After yesterday's snow spill, going out to get cash was not an attractive option so I was relieved to find that Michaels takes credit card orders on the phone plus delivery in the downtown area is free. So incredibly happy, I ordered the small house special at 12.75. This has pepperoni, mushrooms, ham, green peppers, tomatoes and feta cheese. MP also had two of my favourite dessert treats, baklava and Nanaimo bars. Man what a great lunch I will have, all for a grand total of $16. 30 minutes passed and as promised I got a knock on my door, the box seemed small but I was super hungry. I measured the pizza, a grand total of 8 inches but the most impressive feature is that it was 1 inch tall. MP is not shy about loading your pizza and first bite was so amazingly good. I was really impressed, thick, crunchy, tons of feta but not overwhelming. After 3 slices I must admit I am already stuffed. Like other yelpers I love Michael's pizza and will definitely order from them again. read more

I miss working downtown because we used to get pizza from here for our meetings. The crust is excellent. I'm normally more of a thin crust fan, but their crust is crispy on the outside, and just chewy enough on the inside. I think it's considered Greek style. The House special is a great combination of toppings and is my usual go to. I'll mix it up when I split a pizza with friends, but you can go wrong with the house special. Regardless of what you pick, there will be a good amount of toppings and cheese. Really tasty pizza. read more

I hate to be Debbie Downer, but I am not a fan of this place. We ordered this at work recently,and I was reluctant as I live close to this place and have seen the cooks standing right outside thier back door smoking, dirty looking and in dirty aprons. yuck. Our pizzas arrived and they ( like many have said) very thick....this would have been fine if the pizza wasnt so greasy...the grease was pooling up in the middle of the pizzas.... worst part was..... we found a huge long hair baked into the cheese. Now I recognize that hair in food can happen from time to time... accidents happen, however that combined with the images of the dirty looking cooks I have seen was pretty off-putting. I live right above Michaels and I frequent here. Pizza is delicious fresh and always what I ordered. People who complain about the crust do not know pizza. I think it's a compliment to be told it's thick and cheesy. The salad has a homemade dressing and its so delicious. One a side note if you like cheese cake you must try it here. Checked this place out before we went to the theatre on a Thursday night. It was cozy on a cold winter night. It's a small place, so there's not a lot of room to move around. We had to flex our way through a table full of boxes and we had to move our table to let someone pass to go to the restroom. The phone rang constantly, probably for take-out orders, but the ring was very annoying and distracting. For a small place it has 2 large TVs, so the distraction level is at the maximum. There was a large table (?) on one end of the resto with a bunch of pizza boxes, etc. on it. The place definitely has a "mom and pop" type of "charm" We ordered a small pizza, spanokapita appetizer and caesar salads. The pizza was tasty, but the crust didn't seem to be cooked through. The spanokapita filling was good, but the pastry had a burnt flavour, and I was a bit disappointed that there was no tzatziki sauce on the side. The caesar salads were quite good, with very fresh crisp lettuce and a nice hit of anchovy in the sauce. Overall, I probably wouldn't go back as there are other places with better food and atmosphere, but if you are in the area it might be worth a try. What can you say about a basic pizza by the slice joint to make it stand out from all the others? One, pizza was fresh within the last half hour; two, large meal sized slice of pizza for $4; three, lots of room to sit down at a clean table and just do your thing for awhile undisturbed with free wifi; four, a variety of pizza classics, my pepperoni had a thin crust which is the choice of Italians with just the right amount of toppings; five, felt fine going in as a career woman surrounded by dudes; six, trust: tips left on tables, nobody cared, we know who those belong to; seven, location, location, location. Had pizza at Michael's this evening. We found it on google due to it's close proximity to our hotel. Honestly we weren't expecting much, as most pizza places we visit are mediocre at best. We were pleasantly surprised with both Michael's food quality and service. The waitress and manager were both very nice and accommodating, and the pizza was delicious. The pan crust was perfectly cooked with a massive amount of toppings and cheese. They did half and half toppings to accommodate our picky children, and followed up by offering freezes to them. I went to Calgary for a weekend to do some Roots shopping and pick up a Flames game (lost 4-0). We picked out a restaurant that had an amazing looking monster tomahawk steak and walked about a mile from our hotel to get there. Unfortunately, they were closed for a Holiday party. So, instead of looking around, we decided to order pizza in our hotel room instead. We yelped around and I have to say the Michael's had the best looking pizzas in the area (they're beautiful), with the reviews to match. Not that Calgary is known for it's pizza, but we were kind of stoked as the pizza in California is mostly trash. The staff were friendly and the pizza came faster than expected. I know pizza is subjective, but this one just didn't work for me. I think the biggest issue was their pepperoni. instead of small pepperoni on top, they had these massive slices living beneath the cheese. I'm OK with cheese on top, but the pepperoni didn't get any oven attention, so it was basically in it's pre-cooked state. Also, my teeth don't perfectly align and these pepperoni man-hole covers took up the entire bottom of the pizza. Every bite I did, wouldn't cut through the pepperoni, so I would be left with a whale tongue size piece sliding out. This made the fact that it wasn't cooked even more noticeable. Although by sitting in the sauce, it was still hot enough to administer some 3rd degree burns to my chin. I don't blame Michael's for my overbite, but it just wasn't that good. I just came back from New York last week and to be fair, I should have done this review before I ate some of the best pizza in the world (see Lucali and Di Fara). Maybe next time I will skip the pepperoni. Calgary rocked. read more

I was told that Michael's has "the best pizza in Calgary". So for a recent meeting we had a couple of pizza's and some salad delivered to my office. I first tried the salad, trying to be healthy and all, it was way over dressed to the point where the lettuce had turned very soft. But, lets be honest who really cares about the salad at pizza place (it is all about the pie!). This is a thicker crust pizza, with LOTS of cheese. I would compare it to a mix between a true chicago deep dish and an original crust pizza. However, there pizza was way to cheesy and greasy. I think this place is the one of the best pizza shops in Calgary. I usually always order the Cesar salad and it is tasty. It has a great home made dressing that is very rich. The pizza is loaded with toppings and it has a bunch of cheese. I have tried many different versions of the pizza and I have not found one that disappointed me.
